Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 12/13

Good morning,

A rest day yesterday. I took Kylee to the vet, she does have some sort of conjunctivitis going on in her eye. We got some ointment to use for it.

Josie, when you leave for Vegas? Great ride. Yes, we had a record month for weather here.....the warmest December in the history of weather recording. We have to hope it's not like the last time we had a very warm December....that year we got 80 inches of snow in 2 days. Are you planning on running races again?

Lynda, that sounds like a mish mosh of the real story...why do they do that? Is this supposed to be artistic?

Valerie, glad your DH's procedure went well and he can now be on a 3 year schedule. Getting a new bike is great! 15 years is a long time especially with the use yours gets.

Judy, I listened to one of the sleep talks that was not great...(quit in the middle of it), the hypnosis one was ok. That was all for me besides Cathe's. I am going to use the KCM waiting for ICE as well.

Lori, I got my calendar yesterday, will need to open it to see that pic of the windmill! LOL. Agree...as you get older, your eyesight changes, but usually the opposite...I used to wear glasses for distance ( driving especially) but could read any print....now I can see distances great, and need reading glasses. I can understand why you wouldn't buy the KCM's....with all the choices between actual DVD's and streaming. Have fun watching Dark Shadows! I wish it was on Prime.

A workout, and class tonight...we do a little celebration in our Wed Agility class...the trainer orders pizza etc....he is so nice.

Take care,

I used to need lenses for most distances, always had good close up vision without the lenses. DH is always amazed that if he gets a sliver in a finger that I take my lenses out to see it! I previously was able to adjust to see small print even with lenses on. that has deteriorated ..your eyes get less flexible with age is my understanding. so if I want to read or do computer work, I either wear readers over the contacts or (preferably) I take them out. if I'm home I often don't put them in. I need them to drive and do outdoor sports. Even TV is ok these days without them, and don't need to sit on top of the screen. I suppose glasses would be better than contacts but outdoor sports is precisely where glasses are a massive PITA. so soft contacts it is! so far no signs of cataracts or glaucoma, both of which my sister has. she really gt the crappy end f the stick healthwise.
I'm off for my first PT session. shortly

we were going to watch the debate for entertainment last night but we tuned in too early and got the second tier candidates. got tired of that quickly so tried a movie but it was not good so watched a few series episodes instead.

I also got my calendar yesterday. thought I'd ride more but it switched up to rain mid day and DH was sleeping it off so I didn't want to make noise. took a quiet day off.

I confess to not knowing Shakespeare. somehow the school I went to focused on others, like Dickens. reading it on my own never happened. I wouldn't know if the story was tweaked or not. so many references to Shakespeare & his writings, I feel uneducated, like I should read some on my own but never do.

PT went well, I'm optimistic about this. Off to do a short road ride. PT guy thinks therapy will help ..that plus some exercises to fix some imbalances.... more later.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both of Jessica Smith's walking workouts and with the warmup and cooldown, it's about 65 min. The second one has intervals, so it's a low intermediate workout overall.

Deb, I hope Kylee's conjunctivitis clears up quickly. The director of this mish-mosh is Australian and yes, I think he was trying to be artistic. A lot of slow-motion in the battle scenes, maybe in a kind of homage to Kurosawa, who did a brilliant version of Macbeth titled Throne of Blood, which doesn't even try to be Shakespearean because he is Japanese, but his version of Lady Macbeth is absolutely bone-chilling, and his final battle is thrilling. But he's a great director anyway and so many American directors have borrowed from him.

Valerie, that's great news about your DH's colonoscopy. How did your PT go? There are two truly great films, both by Kenneth Branagh, who is probably the greatest living Shakespearean actor. His Henry V makes this history play come alive, and his Hamlet is the best film version IMO, even better than Olivier's, which is a little heavy on the Freud. Macbeth is just a very difficult play to do for a lot of reasons I won't bother trying to explain, but a not-bad version to my mind, is Roman Polanski's 1972 film. He at least makes the hero and heroine young, whereas in prior versions they were always an old couple making a last stab at fulfilling their ambition. His witches are really good, and what I always loved about it is that Polanski changes the play's historical dimension. In Shakespeare, history is ultimately providential, and divine providence liberates time from tyrants who have a limited shelf life (this is the essence of the great "Tomorrow" soliloquy--Macbeth's moment of tragic recognition that he is a mere "player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more" after he is told his lady has committed suicide.). In Polanski, the younger brother (Donalbain) to Malcolm, who ascends the throne after Macbeth is killed, as the rightful heir, is shown visiting the witches, so you know for Polanski, history is repetitive, not providential, and the whole cycle will repeat itself.

Josie, I didn't get around to watching the Fargo finale yet. I can't believe it, but I watched ALL of the debate. To borrow from Macbeth, that was a lot of "sound and fury signifying nothing." But I couldn't stop watching. I must have had too much wine last night.

Hi to Lori and Judy! May the force be with you, as it is reawakening this weekend.

Good morning,

Had fun at class last night....we had a mini Christmas party and did some competition agility games...Kyle won, had the best score/time overall....:). A little rain last night, no snow yet, they are predicting snow for Sunday. Hope not.

Valerie, glad PT went well.

Lynda, is "Peanut" in the JS workout DVD's? I am debating about putting Fargo Season 2 on my list of things to watch. I was really disappointed when I found out that it was not going to be the same town or characters that were in the first season. I guess except for the father...and I guess it has him as a younger man...or that is what I read about it.

Hi to Josie, Judy and Lori...

A workout, ( new KCM, second workout)...and some stuff around here...groom both dogs....

Take care,

We did a 15 mile road ride yesterday. it was cold..38 degrees. amazing how much colder it is with the wind chill, and a BIG difference from 45 degrees. wore goretex parka zipped up high so my neck was covered. a hoodie under the helmet. helmet cover. xc ski gloves. cool weather tights and tennies. I was very warm when we finished. DH wears leather bike shoes and shoe covers but I can't wear bike shoes, and the covers aren't made to fit over regular street shoes. no room in them for a shoe sole.

the PT guy says my glutes are not strong enough. it was obvious I've been using my left leg to avoid discomfort by doing squats etc unevenly with the left leg taking over. I knew that! I've been hiking like that too, leading with left , right leg getting off easier. I got some different shoe inserts, green superfeet. my arch on my right foot is flattening out too much. I've been letting my right side do less and have created an imbalance which gets worse as one side gets stronger and the other weaker. I have exercises to do and will get a brace recommendation next week. I used this PT guy before for my ACL rehab. I'm optimistic.
I 'm doing squats... limited depth so I don't make the knee hurt. seems a brace can help keep my kneecap from wandering. I need to strengthen the right side. I would hike with a brace if it helps! I have a feeling I'll be doing more of cathe's leg workouts. maybe the dreaded barre one, or floor work like pizza presses, hydrants. those develop muscles without pressure on my knee (IMO) but I will get his input first. wants me to get a foam roller to stretch out the IT band area... that is UNPLEASANT!!! other stretches. all familiar from Cathe's stretches. He thought riding was fine so I'm OK there. we'll see how this goes.

we haven't come across the second season of Fargo yet. I did know it went back in time. Dh is all recovered now as am I. 2 day process is hard on everyone. he is so uncomfortable when he can't eat. his family hx is terrible for colon cancer and other cancers, bladder, kidney, melanoma.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Flextrain (56:36).

Deb, I don't think you will be disappointed in this season of Fargo. I thought I would miss the first season's characters too, but the new ones are equally compelling. Yes, the father (Solverson) from season 1 was a state trooper before the diner and he's really wonderful. The daughter is just a little girl in season 2.

Valerie, that's great that you have someone you have worked with before and feel confident in him. Makes all the difference if you enter PT with optimism about the diagnosis.

Made my Russian teacakes this morning and one batch of bars. That's all this year because it will just be the two of us.

Saturday is the big day for getting my closets and office space 'done'--put together. The desk components arrive today, and all the shelving materials have already arrived, so Saturday is the invasion of the professional organizer and handyman.

Hope everyone has a nicer day than the one we have here--raining and very dreary.

Wow--I just received a shipping notice from Cathe! And it's not a calendar because I don't buy her calendars.

Me too. got my calendar yesterday. I did my prescribed exercises x 2-3. also 20 on elliptical, ran 15 treadmill, floor exercises from LBB. I don't want to overdo the squats/lunges. need to readjust form before I do quantity of those. I want to be sure I don't make things worse. .

Good morning & Happy Friday,

Maybe we will have the ICE workouts by early next week. That would be good, although I am enjoying the new KCM....I did the second workout on the DVD yesterday and liked it a lot.

Valerie, that ride sounds really cold, even with all the good cold weather gear you had one! Agree with Lynda, The PT person you have seems to be knowledgeable and one that you feel comfortable with...the 2 most important things. Maybe hold off on any squats/lunges until some of the PT work has done its thing?

Lynda, I will check out Fargo again .I don't think it will be on Prime for a while though. Maybe the DVD's will be at the library soon. I would love to see the finished product when your office makeover is complete...take some pics with your phone and email them to me...or if you can post here...

Hi to Judy, Josie & Lori,

What is everyone doing this weekend?

Take care,

Deb, I LIKE this PT guy and have confidence he wouldn't tell me nonsense. he mentioned a brace and taping too. he is having me do squats with a limited range so I can get the glutes firing again. also stretching on that side. This is similar to DH a couple years ago, where he was unconsciously letting one side do more of the work. He still does some of the exercises. it caused knee problems for him too.

I was surprised how much difference 8 degrees made! it was cold and damp, foggy, but after about the first 10 min I was warm. had 3 layers on top. I didn't wear wind block tights and only tennis shoes without shoe covers. DH has more problems getting cold so wears bike shoes with covers and windblock tights. I wear a hoodie under my helmet with a rain cover. the helmet gets uncomfortable if I try to put more under it.

I didn't ask , but I stuck LBB and did the floor work...... hydrants, pizza presses. I will ask about it next week, but I think those target the right area and no knee stress at all. I am still amazed that with all the riding and hiking we do, that my hips are weak. I paid attention while riding on Wed and feel my glutes working hard, although in a different way. He did a test where I held my leg up while lying on my side. he was able to push my leg down too easily. maybe it's some odd positional thing? whatever. I'll do what's recommended. I will also ask about wall squats with the ball.

I will look thru my disks. anyone remember which workouts have a lot of floor work? firewalkers also might be good.

Judy thank you... I have both of those. I never like floor work much but I think my attitude will change. I didn't get doms from LBB floor work.

I know exactly what you mean Valerie-I am going to have to start doing floor work too. My low back is starting to act up again after doing standing leg work this week. I need to start back with barre work too.

Good afternoon ladies!

Been keeping up with the December rotation. Have not worked out today yet and not sure what is on the agenda. Had my mamo today at 7:30am so left early then did the rest of my xmas shopping. Only had a little bit to do and now I am officially done and it feels great.

Came home to fine this huge branch broke from a tree and landed on the house. It is still connected to the tree and no way will my DH and I be able to remove it on our own it is that large. I called a few companies but no one has called me back. Always something.

Yeah!!! I received my shipping notice too. I am anxiously waiting on the downloads. DVD's arrive Saturday but I had them shipped to my office and of course I am on vacation next week. I may need to swing by anyways for something else so will grab these at the same time.

Valerie...great that you know and like your PT. wow I agree with you about how can your glutes could be weak with all the riding and hiking you do. Floor work and barre will certainly do the trick. Did you order the new Ice all floor work? I'll go on Cathe Demand and check a few workouts out for floor work for you.

Deb...congrats Kyle! We had our office holiday party on Wednesday and was a lot of fun. The KCM workouts sound great. Glad you are enjoying them. I love Peanut too. She is adorable and love when she gets in the way of the workout.

Lynda...funny you should mention Flextrain as I have been having the urge to do the one that I made up using the workout blender that includes portions of the LLA. Very exciting that your office will be coming together tomorrow! Rainy and cold here too!

Judy...I have never been one that enjoyed floor work but hoping with ICE I will enjoy it. I am actually looking forward the the floor work DVD. Hope your back is better soon.

Josie...Are you in Vegas? If yes have fun and win big!

Have a great night all!

Hi everyone--

This morning I did two 20 min. JS workouts--Cardio Flow and Cardio Sculpt (about 43 min. total). I really liked these a lot and there are two more 20 min. workouts on this dvd. I will try them together maybe next week. I would say intermediate on both.

Deb, no "Peanut" on these workouts. I assume Peanut is a pet?? Tomorrow is the big makeover day for our closets and my office. It feels so good to get rid of a ton of stuff that's been gathering dust. I had saved every Vogue Knitting magazine from when it started being published in the 1980s and I went through them to see if there were any sweaters I would still want to knit. I ended up with a small collection of magazines of about 20. We also found a couple ornaments we bought in a Gettysburg store, probably 10 years ago, and we completely forgot they were there. Clutter! I almost think it's a blessing that I was forced out of my office, because this has now become an all-out war on clutter.

Valerie, Great Glutes has a nice floor section and Lean Legs and Abs has a nasty floor section with the pink band that always burns for me. I am surprised, too, that you don't have strong glutes from cycling.

Maybe on Sunday we will go out to dinner. I may go to see Trumbo which is about the Hollywood witch hunt and HUAC, the McCarthy hearings. Dalton Trumbo was blackballed as a writer because he was supposedly a Communist sympathizer.

Judy, is it sciatica or something with your hip? That's frustrating when you seemed to have weathered that before.

Supposed to be colder this weekend, then back up to high 50s by the time Christmas rolls around.

Hi to Lori and Josie! Oh, and Josie, I liked the Fargo finale--especially the way it winds up for Milligan. Hah!

When I did the shoulder PT, I wasn't impressed with the therapist, just OK. this guy is a little further drive. he's a tough, demanding, no nonsense. I like him and like his approach. he's more organized, more definite about what I should do.

My only explanation is ..raising my leg sideways is not a common movement.... remembering how much I hated barre work. biking is "forward and down" not out sideways. maybe I've been lax about engaging glutes in weight work. He also wants me to get a foam roller for deep tissue massage. I didn't like the sensation though.

I don't have Lean legs / Abs., I don't think I have Great Glutes either. I need to look at my dvd's.

Hi Everyone,

I took a rest day today and got caught up on cleaning and grocery shopping. I went to the chiropractor and got an adjustment this morning. DH had to go to the chiropractor too, he pulled his hamstring doing deadlifts this week.

Lynda-I'm having some issues on my right side, low back and glute-piriformis area. It's not as bad as it was last year but I felt it enough yesterday to be concerned. I think I overdid the standing leg work recently and probably need to go back to stretching and doing barre and floor work again.

Deb-I don't think we have anything planned this weekend. Looks like we will be having more seasonable weather here, getting colder and snowing right now.

Valerie-I think we have the same issue with glutes. Mine are weak, even though I workout and ride regularly. I probably need to focus on strengthening them and maybe that would help me with the low back and hip issues. I do use a foam roller and I just got a set of massage therapy balls that I hope will help.

Lori-I'm looking forward to the ICE floor work dvd too. That is going to be a challenging workout, over 40 minutes of floor work! I was just looking at the premixes, there is a "Double It" premix that is over 90 minutes!

Hi to Josie!

Judy

Good morning!

Yesterday I did a Cardio Coach treadmill workout, and it felt pretty good.

Valerie, I can see where you would favor one side and let the other do the work....I do that with my hip/leg going up stairs. This PT person seems to know his stuff. The first workout that came to mind like Judy mentioned, is the whole section of floor work in Gym Style Legs. It is really tough....I always skip it...LOL.

Lori, hope all went well with the mammo. So sorry about the branch! was it a the wind that knocked it down?

Lynda, yes, Peanut is Jessica's dog...I think she is a Boston Terrier...or maybe a French Bulldog...or a mix of those..I can't tell. Either way, she is so cute in the workouts! So funny that you found ornaments that you forgot you even had. Did all the stuff come from the office you had at the University? Do you have an Arts type movie theater that show movies like Trumbo? Unfortunately Prime does not have Fargo for free yet...I will see if I can get at the library.

Judy, I hope your hip/back feel better with the chiropractic adjustment. I guess it is good that you can identify the moves that make it flare up. I am not really looking forward to the floor work DVD in ICE....on the fence on whether I will keep it. You know what they say though...the exercises you avoid are the ones you need the most, and I believe it.

Josie, I hope Lady Luck is with you!

I have a list of chores for the weekend, hope to get them all done today so tomorrow we can relax. We have an obedience match we want to go to for practice for the upcoming trial in January. I'll see how it goes. My ICE workouts are still "in transit" from the NJ post office location.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Ladies,

On Wednesday I went spinning Thursday it was bodypump, Karina could not make it that day and yesterday it was a rest day for me.
Today I will be going to zumba and bodypump. I usually run, but my partner got a day off and wanted to sleep in. Tomorrow I plan on doing a ride with my training group.

I'm decided to postpone the surgery until I get back from the Aids lifecycle ride. It takes a lot of preparation to get ready for the surgery and it means that I will not be able to ride or do any heavy lifting for at least 4-6 weeks after the surgeries. I have to wear my glasses for at least 2 weeks before each eye surgery and in between. I might be able to do some of the prep before the ride such as getting measured for my implant lenses, we will see.

Deb, we are not going to Vegas until the 23rd and will return on the 26th. I also plan on picking up the Peanuts on the 29th and they will be here until the 2nd.

Judy, Karina has been working with me on strengthening my back and abs for the ride, my gluts get plenty of work from running and
bodypump and Karina.

Valery, glad that your found a food PT person. When I tore my hamstring my PT turned out to be someone that I use to run with when I was running marathons and that made all the difference in the world. We are still good friends.

Garance, have you watched The Knick. I love that one too! I just saw the finale of the second season last night and it left me wanting more :)

Lori, it's nice that you have a week off from work. What did you ask Santa for this Christmas? I always ask for cash so that I can buy what ever I want when I see it ;)

Have a great weekend!

Josie
