Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/18

I don't remember if I posted a link to these bottles before. sorry to repeat myself if I did.

https://www.gocontigo.com/water-bottles
this link shows 3 contigo water bottles. they are hard plastic..... hopefully not a undiscovered health risk. they hold generous 24 oz. I like the right hand one in the pic, with the "chug" opening. I fill these from the water dispenser on our refrigerator and keep them cold. I LOVE this bottle. bottles with sipper "straw" don't work well for me. they squeak and I inhale too much air. once I saw how these open /close.... I LOVE them.
they have measurements on the side. I drink 3 of these a day. we used to have a Brita but I still needed a portable bottle, and bottles with a small neck are hard to refill. after I started drinking filtered water, I realized how much chlorine smell turned me off. these bottles are indestructible, portable, dw safe. they barely fit in car cup holder . I bought 2 sets of 3 at costco for about $12. I don't buy water in throw away plastic bottles anymore. Costco here does not have them right now . the are more expensive at other places, like Target.

I like rice, all kinds, white, brown red, wild. I don't think rinsing is a 100 % answer because arsenic is taken inside the rice itself. can't hurt though. I was surprised that brown and organic didn't make much difference.
it sounds like its not a big issue unless it becomes a big part of your diet, especially for children who might drink a rice beverage several times a day and rice based cereal. I think the CR article is available on their web site since its several years old.

no workout yet today. did grocery shopping, got our new shower door installed. it has been 4 years intermittently since we started this project. thought we were done several times, last about 1 .5 yrs ago and multiple fixes since then. finally have it done right. partly our fault for trying to be economical and get a cheaper floor but the pan was not sloped enough and led to a slow small leak. Finally done!!

Hello Ladies,
This is my first chance to check in today. This morning I did Chiseled Lower Body Blast (timesaver) for 38 minutes and 245 calories burned. My average heart rate was 128 and maximum heart rate was 152. I did the premix with less Intervals. I had so much to do today but I didn’t want to skip my workout. My daughter and her family arrived mid afternoon.

Valerie, thanks for the heads up about Cathe’s newsletter. I went back to look at it. I also found the article on Triceps dips helpful. I rarely use protein powders because I prefer to chew my nutrients. I had the Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides but I recently threw out the container because I never use it. I have read about the issue with rice and arsenic and most recently chemicals in oatmeal. There are many problems with our food supply.

Have a nice evening everyone.

Valerie, thanks for the link on the water bottles. My daughter carries around one that looks like that. I think I would like the chug one myself. I wish we didn't have so many of those projects. We still have not got around to the faucet that I purchased the spring and seal for.

Carolyn, nice that you were able to still get a workout in. I doubt I will be doing one Thanksgiving since we are having family over so early and I will be cooking. Enjoy your family :) I have read stuff about oatmeal also. I usually buy the Bobs Red Mill thick cut and the gluten free oats. I don't eat them often.
Yes, we do have a lot of problems with our food supply. I prefer to do as much as I can from scratch, but when there is even problems with the plants it makes it hard.

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Cardio/Sculpt Overload, met 5.8, 256 calories, 119 average heart rate, 152 max, 2,472 steps, 40 minutes. I wore a 12 # vest instead of 6 like Kelly and 8 and 12# dbs. I then did Kelly's Cardio Sculpt Fitness dvd skipping the warm up and the abs, (much longer than I thought it would be :) )
55 minutes, 356 calories, heart rate average 123, max 162, met 5.9, 3,656 steps. I used 5 and 10# dbs(mostly 10's except shoulders) Total time was 95 minutes, 612 calories, 6,128 steps

Good afternoon.

PT exercises yesterday. After this week, I will try to do some short low impact workouts, maybe a KCM. John got out of the office early so he was able to come with me to class. He held him in his lap on the way there, which was fine, then sat in the back seat next to him in the crate on the way home. He was fine, actually fell asleep. I think he was exhausted from the class. LOL.

Lori, that's great that your in-laws have that equipment that you can use for your workouts. Great pictures !

Judy, good news on the results of Chris' scope. :).

Valerie, it is surprising that there is so much arsenic in rice.. I know it is a mainstay of the Asian cultures, and I have never heard any reports of them having health issues due to eating rice. Protein powder can be mixed in a few things, but I found that I didn;t like a lot of them. Vanilla is good for oatmeal, but it is still an acquired taste.

Hi to Carolyn & Diane Sue,

Take care,

Deb I have thought about Asia and why is this not a problem. I don't know the answer. there is variation in how much arsenic it contains, what kind of rice and where grown. California was better with less arsenic than texas, etc. I would not give up rice. it is not that huge a part of my diet.
Great that Ike is settling down for drives. our cat disliked the car because it always meant a trip to the vet. I had motion sickness problems but outgrew them. looking out the side windows of a car can still get me, as riding facing other than forward. on a boat where I lose sight of land, OMG!! not happening ever again. medicine didn't help at all.

I hate to sound so over-the-top about a water bottle. If I'm not paying attention, I don't drink enough. this bottle has solved it for me. something about the measurement on the side. I drink a full bottle before I get pout of bed in the morning. I run the lids the dw top shelf, but not the bottles. I worry about plastics and that much heat.

Judy hope you can enjoy your holiday now that the testing is done. hate to have things like that lurking in the background.

Cooking most of the day here, a trip to Sprouts for more potatoes. Then my grandson came over and visited for awhile after work.

Deb, I am glad that Ike seems to be getting a bit more relaxed with riding. That is good that your husband was able to go along.

Valerie they have those water bottles on Amazon. I saw a three pack of them. We rented a yacht once in the gulf and it was so miserable. I was down inside and that made it really bad. The guy running it, had me go outside on the front of the boat and it got a bit better.

Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving. I never got to post yesterday but I didn’t get to workout. I won’t be working out today either. I also spent yesterday cooking, mostly baking. I made the german chocolate cake that everyone loves and a couple of pies. Today is all about vegetables and the turkey. I try to make a couple of low calorie vegetable dishes to balance the many high calorie items. I can fill up on turkey and vegetables and enjoy my dessert!

Have a wonderful day everyone.

I did metabolic total body yesterday plus core 1. my plan was disrupted because of the romaine problem. I had 1.5 boxes of spring mix for the salad that I had to dump. had to head to the store, a dreaded process on the day before a holiday.:mad: thought I had it all covered on Tuesday but no. Made my workout later than planned but got it done.

Happy thanksgiving everyone.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!!

Yesterday, I needed a quick workout, so I did two of SB’s targets. The first was upper and lower compound moves followed up with an upper back thigh workout. I walked this morning with my MIL and hoping to get another quick weight workout in. Not sure though. We leave tomorrow!! Our time here went quick!

My inlaws have a Vitamix!! Another suprise. It is about 25 years old and going strong. I have been using it for celery smoothies and told them about the peanut butter and other things they can do with it. They now have a renewed interest. They mainly were using it for margarita’s!! Lol! I thought that was pretty funny. They live in a golf community and always are going to get to gethers on weekend in their golf cart. They have such the social life!

Valerie...we have. Couple on contigo bottles and are very happy with them. Yeah on the new door!! 4 years is one long project. Yes thanks again on pointing out the protein powder link. Due to my travels this week I may have missed in. I noticed both my inlaws use powders and i have them read the article. Very interesting!

Have a great day all....need to run...I was just told I am cooking the turkey!!! Heaven help me!!!!!

I return tomorrow so will catch up with you all over the weekend!!!

Happy Thanksgiving :) I managed to get in Kelly Coffey's Body Design Cardio Boot Camp and yoga premix, 30 minutes, 184 calories. We had 18 of us in all for dinner. I feel so blessed and thankful for my family.
I spent some time looking at labels on my supplements. The Garden of Life Grass fed Whey has all kinds of safety labels along with the NSF label. It is hard to understand one place that I have never heard of before now contradicts what the other safety testing has said. Ancient Nutrition (Dr Axe) does not seem to post any of those labels other than what it's ingredients are and who and what it is for. They have plenty of articles. I wonder where Dr Mercola's whey protein would be on the testing. It makes me irritated when I think we are being duped one way or the other when trying to make healthy choices.

Carolyn, German chocolate cake comes February for my husbands birthday :) I always make it from scratch. I saw a recipe for a German Chocolate pie and came close to making that. I am so glad most of the pies left with family. Just lemon left here and my husband will eat that.

Deb, I thought of you and the dog shows when the Dog show came on after the Thanksgiving day parade. My younger daughter always has a tradition of watching the parade and dog show while having cinnamon rolls on Thanksgiving morning.

Valerie, we didn't even have a salad for dinner. Just the fruit salad and a veggie tray. I thought one of the others was going to bring one, or I would have made one myself. I had to do another trip to Sprouts yesterday afternoon and there were a lot of people shopping.

Lori, that is funny that your in laws have a vita mix and they mainly use it for margaritas. What a waste of a very useful device. I hope cooking the turkey went well ;)

Good morning,

I hope everyone had a nice day yesterday. I ATE TOO MUCH! I bet most people are saying that today, or in my case, last night.

Valerie, I heard about the romaine problem and quickly texted my cousin who brings the salad telling her No Romaine! Our salad, although made with iceberg, had so many other good thinks in it that I didn;t even miss the romaine.

Lori, your in-laws sound like fun people! Have a safe trip home.

Diane Sue, I have never tried Mercola's protein powder...mostly because of the cost. They are having a Black Friday 20% off everything sale today with free shipping, so it might be worth taking a look.

Hi to Judy & Carolyn,

Have a great day!

Good Morning,
Today I did ICE Metabolic Total Body for 54 minutes and 289 calories burned. Average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 155. I worked out early to get done before the family was up and about.

Deb, I felt like I ate too much yesterday too, partly because it was different kinds of foods and more carbohydrates. But... I enjoyed it!

Diane Sue, I make my German chocolate cake from scratch too. My grandchildren watched the parade then it was football time.

Valerie, the romaine lettuce warning is concerning. Fortunately for us, that’s not the type lettuce that I buy. I prefer red or green leaf and I buy the full head instead of bagged.

Lori, around the time that I bought my Vitamix, my friend discovered that her mother had a Vitamix in her basement that was about 25 years old. Similar to you and the in-laws, her Mom started using it again after my friend got hers and helped her mom learn to use it again.

Hello to Judy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

Good morning. I actually did not over eat THAT much. still.... not a day to count points. 3 glasses of wine some baked brie in puff pastry, and a slice of pumpkin pie put me WAY over 23 points before I ate another thing. it was OK ( IMO) for a holiday. that blasted baked brie is a million points to start with, but its so good. As long as it's not a "regular" I am OK with it. I squeezed in a 20 min sprint on the elliptical mid day. I woke up hungry in the middle of the night.

I ended up with spinach for the salad. most of the lettuce mixes are part romaine. I don't eat iceberg, DH doesn't like arugula or kale, so usually spring mix or a half and half blend keeps us happy. Mostly it annoyed me because I saw the first warnings Tuesday RIGHT after I got home from shopping. If I'd checked my phone before leaving the store I could have saved a trip wed morning when it was really busy.

wow both Carolyn and diane sue making german chocolate cake! I'm impressed. I used to love that cake! my mother made it often. She baked a lot, homemade cake, cookies, sweet things. Carolyn, do you bother calculating points for it? just curious about what the grand total might be.

I don't know what the answer is on protein or collagen products. I would look at independent studies not anything from the company selling the product. that's why a CR report has more credibility to me. they don't have a dog in that fight. I blame globalization with causing loss of control over ingredients. I avoid food products from china but with mixed powders, you may not be able to find out the source of all components.

This morning was just a long weight day. I did Kelly Coffey 30 Minutes to Muscle Definition premix full body compilation that sets it up into a giant set format, 88 minutes (actual 76 minutes) met 4.2, 408 calories, 831 steps (a lot is upper body) . Valerie, it sounds like you enjoyed your Thanksgiving which is what’s important. The WW plan is designed for real life so eating a holiday meal is expected. That’s why the weekly points are built into the program. German Chocolate cake is 23 points for one slice. It’s not my favorite cake, so I usually have something else. I prefer to save my dessert points for pumpkin pie! We have calculated points for our holiday meal during the meeting as a part of planning and many people will use 50 points or more for the day including wine and dessert. Mine is usually around 35 points for the day, but yesterday was less than that.

Carolyn, thank you, I was just going to look it up. chances are I won't ever make german choc cake. I like other things better. pumpkin pie. I had a small slice with a dab of whipped cream. not diet food but not ridiculous. wow, 23 points in a slice is brutal! I'm sure I hit 50. the brie in puff pastry is delish. I had a decent serving of it with sliced apple and a few crackers. Loved it. Back to the usual less indulgent fare. I'm not a fan of gravy, dressing, or potatoes so I eat some turkey and mostly vegetables otherwise, but no way past the brie and wine. I'm going to look for a crustless pumpkin pie. can't avoid the sugar but getting rid of the crust would help.

I meant to get back here earlier, but got side tracked with troubleshooting my drier. I checked the F01 code and it says it is the control panel o_O I checked sears for the part and they wanted 296.00 for the part. My drier is almost 10 years old, that would be ridiculous. I did read that some people had something they were able to solder and there driers worked again. I tried unplugging it for awhile to see if it came back up, but nope, it did not. I wish things would just stop breaking. My husband and son tried to fix the bath faucet and water came out of the handle after the trying to fix it. Now both sides do not work. I had to put a plastic bag over the faucets and set hand sanitizer in there for our guests. I ordered parts from Delta for the exact faucets, stem and all and hopefully by the end of next week we can get it fixed. I don't want to pay someone to come out!

Deb, I have read many saying that they ate too much. I went for seconds on the pecan pie, but was so full I could not eat it all. After everyone left I threw it out. I really did not need all of that extra sugar. I have had a headache all day today and I know it is because I ate too many things I do not usually eat. My younger daughter bought homemade rolls. I could not resist them. I will have to look at Mercola. That is where I think I got my B complex from that I am taking. It is them or Thorne. Both are kind of expensive, but have good quality products.

Carolyn, no football here yesterday. My husband is only interested in College football. OU plays tomorrow so he will be watching. We finished a Christmas movie after the family left and then watched a modern day Princess and the Pauper type movie :) Homemade German chocolate cake is so much better than purchased or packaged mixes.

Valerie, I always wake up with hunger pangs after eating a bunch of starchy and sugary carbs. I guess it just stirs up that response. Otherwise I am rarely hungry. I had no plans to try to eat healthy yesterday though. I let Christmas and Thanksgiving be whatever I feel like eating. I don't buy iceburg or romaine lettuce very often. Generally I eat kale and spinach. Sometimes I will buy a spring mix. I did recently buy some romaine for a specific recipe with an avocado dressing though. I thought afterward that I would have liked it better with my usual greens. Not all sellers are willing to divulge exactly where their products are sourced. That is usually a red flag. I see people ask and they post their results on Amazon from some of those companies. I don't think NSF is associated with a particular company. I think they are just an organization that does the testing and is a more well known company.

Carolyn, I make a crustless pumpkin pie all of the time that has a bit of oatmeal crumble on top from a Better Homes and Gardens light cookbook. We love it and it saves a lot of calories. I use fat free evaporated milk and cut the sugar in half using some stevia. As far as German Chocolate cake, I love the frosting. My preference is a sliver of the cake attached to some of the icing and dropped on top of some vanilla ice cream. That would be my way of enjoying it. I am not much for cake. Maybe some cream cheese pound cake, but not cake.

Valerie, I can post my Pumpkin pie recipe that I use I have been making it for years. My husband loves it and he is picky.
