Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 11/11

Good evening ladies,

Today I over slept. Can’t remember when I did this last. I usually always wake up before the alarm but still set it anyways. If I am having a night where I wake up lot then I need the alarm. Completely forgot to set it. I slept good, but I guess I needed that extra 2 hours this morning. Was going to work out at lunch today, but right when I went to go the Vice Chairman needed something from me. Oh well..that ended that!

Diane Sue...I am looking forward to the most recent Raw workout. It looks great. Ihave never had macadamia nut butter. I bet it is delicious! Funny, the older I get the smaller the print I can read. It is so backwards. I stopped wearing my contacts because I could not read anything anymore. I wear glasses now only for driving and watching TV. Been meaning to mentione GiGi has been loving her Blue Dental Treats.

Valerie...you would be surprised how quickly you can pick up rebounding. I get such a runners “high” when I rebound and yes it is such a great fit for me. Happy Birthday to your husband!

Deb...we have National Grid here too. So sad to here minimal improvement with your hip. Hang in. I like some mat work but I have always prefered standing. I must have 25 recipies I have saved to use in the Vitamix. Bob is doing well. He decided against the surgery his primary care recommended. Primary care sent him to a specialist that sent him to another doctor and no one could agree on the resolution. His symptons subsided a bit since we have been trying the “natural” route for him. So time will tell. Hoping things will settle. One of the reasons the Vitamix will work well for us. Below is a picture of the Bellicon I have for the office. I went low key in color. I love it. They all think I am crazy at work. I don’t care. :p

Carolyn...I alwas mention Cardio Leg Blast is a favorite of mine! Great workout! I am a firm believer in cortisone shots. They have been amazing for my shoulders. I need to find a place on line that I can order peanuts from in bulk. need to start researching this.

Hi to Judy!!!

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Step 2, 41 minutes, heart rate 133 average, 166 max, met 5.8, 262 calories 3,781 steps. I then did Coffey Fit Raw Boxing and Kettlebell and Bands, 30 minutes, met 5.8, 192 calories, heart rate average 120, max 151, 1,930 steps. Total time was 71 minutes, 454 calories, 5, 711 steps.
I used 2# dumbbells and a 20 # kettlebell for boxing, kettelbell work. I had a lot of running to get out and do today so am late getting here.

Valerie, I like pretty much all nuts. I grind my own coffee in the mornings. It tastes better freshly ground. The apple cake sounds good. I hope that you can get to the bottom of who hit the mailboxes and they pay for it. My son in law ended up putting their brick mailbox back up himself. Even the neighbors said the box was standing a few minutes before the trash truck went through. He contacted the trash pick up and they never did do anything about it.

Deb, it is kind of hard to continue a protocol for injuries when the pain stays. It takes so long for things like that to mend. They have some sprouted nut butters on Amazon, but the price is up there around 15 -24 dollars for a jar and some of those jars are only 8 oz. . It is supposed to be better for digestion and something about the sprouting gets rid of some toxins in the nuts that are there to protect the plant's self from insects till it gets going. There is a place called Blue Mountain Organics that carries a line of sprouted nut butters and has a write up on the health value of sprouted nut butters. Theirs was a bit less and I was tempted to order a jar. But, I went to Walmart and bought Maranatha Almond butter with no sugar or salt which is what I usually buy or Barney Butter.

Carolyn, I think you are probably right about the cortisone shot. They gave me a steroid injection for my knee when 2 and a half months post surgery it was still pretty painful and I was having a hard time getting back into my workouts. It really did take about a year before I could do most of what I was doing before surgery. I have never went back to as heavy of weights as I was lifting then. I find the stretching and flexibility work is very important too as I get older. If our Whole Foods was closer and more convenient I would probably go there to pick up certain items that I know they carry for Whole 30, but it is in an area I generally never go to.

Lori, I bet Amazon has bulk bags of peanuts. I would want them shelled though. Can't imagine shelling nuts to make nut butter. I like your knew Bellicon. Those that think it is funny that you love to use the rebounder so much will be the ones having a hard time getting around while you are still able to do anything you want :) That is wonderful that your eyesight improved over time. I see my grandchildren able to read the small print and I know it is my eyesight. I wore glasses for so many years and then when they were finally able to do it I had a dual procedure for laser surgery. I went from one laser to another for both eyes. My glasses were always so thick it was hard to keep the lenses in the frames if they weren't heavier thicker frames. I had perfect vision after the surgery, but I guess aging has made it a little worse. I can still read and stuff without glasses, but I have a pair of readers that I got a year ago when I had my eye exam. I have seen you tubes about eye exercises to improve vision. I am not sure how that would work.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday. I have PT this morning.

Carolyn, you are doing great on the rotation. I won't give up on the PT exercises, its just frustrating that I am still in pain. I am thinking it may not even be what they thought it was. :( We too grind our coffee before making it. Our coffee maker has a built in grinder, so you load the beans in and press a button. Very simple.

Valerie, I'm sure PUD is a west coast or even Washington state thing. Each state has there own utilities I would imagine. At least they admitted it was their truck! Agree that for $6 it would not be worth the paperwork to file a claim. Would like to see the recipe for that apple cake. That is the kind of cake I enjoy...more like a coffee cake.

Lori, you must have needed that extra sleep. I have not overslept in decades. We never use an alarm. Of course, we now have the "IKE" alarm. LOL. He actually slept until 4:30 this morning, usually it has been 3:30. Glad Bob is doing better. I agree, who cares what they think at work. They are probably impressed with how much you do. Great that your eyesight improved. Mine totally change from being near sighted to far sighted. Weird. I only have to wear reading glasses now.

Diane Sue, good job on the KCM streaming. Is a steroid shot different than Cortisone? My PT person wanted to give the exercises a real chance before doing any shots. He said something like once you do the shot thing, you are pretty much stuck with it, or something like that. I think the nut butter in the stores, that is organic, no sugar or salt is pretty good, and no work! LOL.

Hi to Judy,

Take care,

Deb I will post a link later. from cooking light 1997. The title does not print right ( on my printer) but rest of recipe is ok. loads of reviews. I used butter, Neufchatel ( 1/3 less fat) cream cheese, honey crisp apples and sprinkled some walnuts on top. I used a spring form pan that is slightly larger than 9 inches but it baked the same amount of time. other ideas in the reviews.
https://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/cinnamon-apple-cake#add-your-reviews

I wear contacts for distance but sometimes need readers for small print. I am usually OK for short reads, but if its a lot of reading, reader glasses help. Close vision is good without contacts. I need correction for active sports, driving, TV. Sometimes I wear one lens only. can see close and far but not good enough for sports. Glasses drive me crazy. can’t walk with them on, so constantly on/off.

Yes ….. the PUD had a truck here at that time. they definitely did it. Not worth the time to file. If our box had been destroyed, or if we needed to hire someone to do the repair, then yes. not worth it for cost of the post

We just bought a coffee grinder. We want espresso grind and too often they grind it too coarse. the fine grind jams their machines and takes longer to do. DH will do it since he makes coffee most mornings . Whole beans are cheaper at Costco.

All of a sudden it’s thanksgiving. Are you all cooking this year??

I am cooking as usual. we do turkey. cousin and wife are coming. I guess I have been distracted.....and all of a sudden it's next week.

Deb, I think you have been patient but …. time to get another idea about your hip. did you ever get any imaging done? is this your primary care doc or an orthopedic doc? seems like if it was going to improve you would see some results by now.

Deb, maybe you will have to get a second opinion if PT does not work. I am pretty sure steroid is the same as cortisone. I only let them do it once. He said if it still bothered I could come back in a couple of months and get another. I was careful on what I was doing, as I was afraid it would give me a false sense of being healed and I would make things worse. It took a couple of weeks to even make a difference in the pain. When it wore off, I felt pain again, and at times I felt it was the same as before surgery. It took a lot of work on my part and being cautious to finally be able to do most things without pain. I still have times 5 years later where I push it too far and have to back off.

Valerie, I am cooking. Our family is growing and with boyfriends and girlfriends now, I purchased 3 turkey roasts. Now I am wondering how I am going to fit them all in the oven at the same time. Maybe roast a day ahead and reheat or something.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, both workouts, for 44 minutes and 339 calories burned. My average heart rate was 133 and maximum heart rate was 165. We have another day of cold rainy weather but I needed to go out anyway.

Deb, I hope your PT appointment today is productive.

Lori, it sounds like your body is encouraging you to get more rest. I have seen bulk peanuts on Amazon, but have never ordered them. Like Diane Sue, I wouldn’t want them in the shell. We always had roasted peanuts in the shell when I was growing up, but I was not a fan. The rest of my family loved them.

Valerie, I am cooking for Thanksgiving which is one reason that I needed to stop in the grocery store this morning. I bought turkey wings to roast and use for stock, something I want to do today. The apple coffee cake sounds like a recipe that I might have used before.

Diane Sue, it is hard to cook turkey for a large group. I will roast a turkey and my brother usually brings a ham which takes some of the pressure off for me. I need to use my oven for other things. I will get an extra turkey breast for the day after because we don’t have much left after the big meal.

Judy are you traveling for Thanksgiving?

Hi Everyone,

Monday evening I did Yin Yoga. Yesterday I did Jari Love Extremely Ripped Boot Camp and today I did
Xtrain Core 2, the 100 Rep Bicep & Tricep Challenges, then Walk On-Cardio Core Walk and the Stronger Knee Bonus. Friday I will be starting an active rest week.

Deb-I hope you had a good PT appointment today. I agree with Diane Sue & Valerie. Maybe you should get a second opinion and have some imaging done if you haven't already. It must be so frustrating to have it last this long :(

Carolyn-We had planned on going to Indiana for Thanksgiving but Chris would rather stay close to home until his testing is done. We cancelled our reservations and are thinking about possibly going out for Christmas instead.

Valerie-Thanksgiving really came up quickly this year! We will probably go out or bring something in for dinner.

Diane Sue-Great job with the Raw workouts! I need to get back into those. Maybe after my rest week.

Lori-I love that you have a Bellicon for your office! I was always that way at work too, I would ride my bike to work or run at lunch (we had a bike path next to the water plant) and everyone thought I was crazy but I didn't care either :)

Have a great day!

Judy

Valerie, I received my final issue of Cooking Light today. Current subscribers will be rolled into Eating Well. I was wondering how they would handle ending the publication.

Judy, nice workouts this week. I can understand wanting to stay close to home while you wait for a diagnosis.

Today I did Coffey Fit Raw Cardio Overload v2, 31 minutes, heart rate average 120, max 148, met 5.8, 198 calories, 2,573 steps. I wore my 12# weight vest. I then did Strong and Sweaty Total Body Giant Sets Mish Mosh #3 double upper body, 49 minutes, met 4.0, 212 calories, heart rate average 99, max 135, 925 steps. Valerie, the holidays have just popped up on me. I am getting worse at being ready. I used to have all Christmas shopping done in October and things ready so I did not have to deal with crowded stores.

Lori, Gertie loves dental treats. I have used several brands depending on cost. Most of the time I order the Milkbone ones from Amazon as they are the best price and have the Vet approval label on them VOHC or something like that. Once I got the Greenies Grain free when Amazon had one of those limited time offers. I have to file her nails in the morning before getting the dental treat out. She wants it right now!! I give her a small treat before filing and then she gets the dental treat. Funny thing is she takes it to another room to enjoy it. Like she thinks I am going to steal it or something LOL.

Carolyn, I still have not purchased Cardio Quick Fix. Is it step or floor cardio? I used to cook the neck and giblets for broth when I did whole turkeys. Now with just the breast I don't have that option. I usually just buy chicken bone broth. Good idea to cook wings though. We used to have a ham with the turkey and often my son would cook it. He always made some of the best things, but he has quit cooking things like he used to. We would all buy hams every Christmas from my grandson's wrestling fund raiser that was really good ham. My biggest problem is what to do with all of the left over ham, as it is not something that I want to eat often. I would slice and put some in containers for sandwiches. My husband liked them that way. We can always use the left over turkey. I make turkey pot pie soup and some other recipes with it. My husband likes it for sandwiches.

Judy, nice workout today. I forget about my Jerry Love workouts.

Carolyn I read somewhere that Jan19 would be the first combined issue and there would be more issues per year, 10 vs EW has been 6. EW always was lighter on advertising than CL so I wonder what will happen. I got disgusted with CL a few years ago when it got dumbed down abruptly, as if they were catering to people who never cooked, and the advertising got worse than ever. I have not looked at an issue in years now. I had renewed EW a long time ago and have 2 yrs left I think. EW is not perfect either so this will be interesting.

Good morning,

PT went well yesterday. They gave me a new exercise to do, and it seemed to help even doing it once while I was there. Fingers crossed. I asked about stretching, and he told me that my flexibility is not the problem, and actually, it could aggravate the situation. He did the same evaluation that he does when you first go, and estimates that I am 50% on the way to being pain free, so about 2 months more to go. :(

Valerie, thanks for the link. That looks delicious. It has a lot of sugar, for a Cooking Light recipe. Yes, I am cooking, a little less people, it looks like 17. It did creep up suddenly, maybe because it is so early, we think of Thanksgiving at the end of the month. It is my primary care that referred me to PT. No imaging as of yet. I will diligently do the exercises, including the new one and see how it goes in the next 2 weeks.

Diane Sue, What you described after getting the shot is something I am concerned about. Is there a difference between a turkey roast and a full regular turkey? I hear you on the girlfriends etc. It just keeps growing. Do you do a buffet style or are you able have people seated with food on the table?

Carolyn, my Mom used to boil and use the liver, heart etc of the turkey to make the stock. We do 2 turkeys, a 13-15 pound, and a 23 pound. A ham would be nice, but my family would not eat it.

Judy, great workouts. I can understand why Chris would want to stay around home right now.

Hi to Lori,

Ike to the vet this morning for his first Lepto vaccine. They didn;t want to give it to him last week, as he was getting the distemper/parvo vaccine, and also going on antibiotics for his UTI...too many things to affect his immune system. I like that my vet thinks of those kinds of things. Yes it means another trip, but it is worth it.

Take care,

Deb trying new things is good since you seem to be stuck where you are. good to give a deadline on how long you will wait before asking for re evaluation.
the focus in 1997 was reducing fat more than sugar. the cake is not overly sweet. when I have an occasional treat, I want it to taste good. my main issue with Eating Well was baked goods, muffins, desserts were not sweet enough. it's not a part of my every day food, so if I get a slice of coffee cake, I want something special I enjoy. I can't speak to Cooking Light recipes recently. before that, I generally liked their baked goods and desserts. I'd rather cut serving size, although sometimes it gets crazy. to get an acceptable nutritional profile, serving size can drop to minuscule.

I've used turkey roasts. they were a rolled up shape with some light and dark meat and no bones or skin, tied together with cord. I went to a bone- in turkey breast 2 yrs ago. We all like breast meat. it's easy, doesn't dry out waiting for legs/thighs to get done. smaller, so cooks in less time. does not come with giblets. they include a packet of "gravy". it was barely so-so. I don't like gravy but everyone else does, so I will roast some vegies and some chicken bones to generate a gravy base. that's the only downside. I focus more on vegie sides.
never got in a workout yesterday. will do today.

This morning I did Pyramid Upper Body which was 59 minutes and 330 calories burned. My average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 148.

Diane Sue, you had quite a comprehensive workout yesterday. Great job. Cardio Quick Fix is floor cardio only. Workout one is slightly more intense than workout two. I like doing them together when I can. I made the turkey stock and simmered it for 3 hours. It makes a very flavorful bone broth that I will use for dressing, gravy, and anything else that needs stock. Leftover ham is never a problem when my family is staying here. If I have any left after the house clears out I also freeze it in slices.

Deb, I’m glad that PT was good. It must have been reassuring to learn that you are making progress.

Hi to Judy, Lori, and Valerie.

This morning I did STS Athletic Step, 49 minutes, heart rate average 124, max 155, met 6.0, 324 calories, 3,848 steps. I then did Kelly Coffey's Step Boxing 2 premix workout 2 no drills, 22 minutes, heart rate average 134, max 159, 144 calories, met 5.9, 2079 steps. I had to go run errands again :( I really would like to have stayed home today. This was 71 minutes, 468 calories, 5,927 steps.
I spent the afternoon cleaning things from top to bottom as it seems that my allergies are bad since the heater has started running. Probably dust mites and recirculating them. I changed the filter on the upstairs unit when I got home and since it is warm I took Gertie outside and gave her a good brushing. I also used eucalyptus oil in a spray and wiped a lot of stuff down like light fixtures and fans. Hopefully this helps.. I sprayed some of the spray on Gerties bed and she doesn't want to lie on it now. Hopefully she will later. I will put a towel over it or something.

Valerie, I had to go look at my Cooking Light Cookbook. It is the 1991 cookbook. I have a couple of recipes from it that I use a lot, but they are pretty much in my head and I don't get out the recipe book. I am the same with gravy, but family would be looking for it. I am so used to cutting back on sugar that everything tastes overly sweet to me. My husband sometimes complains that stuff is not sweet or does not have much flavor when I cut back on sugar and I think it is really sweet. I made a Bisquick impossible coconut cream pie for him using coconut sweetened condensed milk and unsweetened coconut the other day. He says it is okay, but not sweet enough. Usually when I do this I use gluten free Bisquick, but I did not have any this time.

Deb, it sounds like you have a good vet. Mine is that way. I went in to pick up the Frontline Gold while I was running errands. At least your PT sounded more promising for recovery this time. I hope the new exercise is what really works. I bought turkey breasts which is actual turkey breasts, not roasts. The roasts are generally white and dark meat pressed together in an oval shape. They usually have a lot of salt and additives. We have a long folding table that we set up with our dining table and I have family bring more folding chairs. Between this and our counter where we fit 3 of the children, we can usually all fit. I may have to move furniture and pull in the small wound patio table from the sun room if we have more guests.

Carolyn, I may have to look into buying that dvd. I could use more fun floor work that is not quite so intense as Cathe's is a lot of the time. I felt like my calorie burns and heart rate did not make sense today. One was definitely harder and I felt I was working harder, but my heart rate was lower. I swear my Fit Bit is not working quite right lately. Maybe I need to shut it down and see what happens.

I did Flex Train today, used 5 lbs for most of it. I think I can go to 8 like Cathe, but for some reason I was thinking this was harder than it was. it was good, I always liked this one but did it too much and got tired of it. did not get to the core section. planned to but we refiled out hot tub and wanted to try it out, and that got priority.

Diane sue, funny you should say that... DH said the cinnamon apple cake isn't sweet enough! I only have had a few bites to test it and I thought it was quite good. maybe a little dry, like too much cake for the apples but I may have over baked it slightly.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did Jari Love Get Ripped 1000 #3. It's one of her new ones that came out this year. It was harder than I thought it would be based on previewing it. I had to modify a couple of moves that I thought would aggravate my low back, but overall I really liked it. The music was good and it went fast. I will do this one again.
Chris's doctor called yesterday and they now have his endoscopy scheduled for next Tuesday. There was a cancellation and Chris's cardiologist sent his records over and gave the ok for the procedure without needing another cardiac exam. He had one a few months ago and has been getting them regularly. We are glad that he doesn't have to wait until December for this.

Deb-I'm glad that PT went well for you yesterday. I have read that stretching when you are already flexible can sometimes cause issues.

Carolyn-Nice job with Pyramid Upper Body. That's another set that I really like. I like the Pyramid Combo workout too.

Valerie-That cinnamon apple cake recipe does look good! I might have to try that. Thanks for sharing it. I subscribed to Vegetarian Times in the late 90's and I have one of their cookbooks from back then. I need to start using it again.

Hi to Diane Sue & Lori!

Good evening Ladies,

Yesterday morning, I did Fit Split Push along with the FS Boxing. I also freestyle bounced for 30 mins at lunch. I loved it! I had so much energy in the afternoon. This morning I did Fit Tower Legs and Glutes and Core..(i skpped the core..). Then did Linda Woolridge’s 30 min Cardio Sculpt Bounce at lunch. Again loving the lunch bounces!!

Diane Sue...I liked the look of the Raw Step. Nothing fancy but a great workout. I used to have the Cusinart Grind and Brew. I loved it but my doggies did not. When the timer would go off and it started to grind they went insane. Needless to say..that ended that. We had a keurig for the past several years but we recently went back to a regular coffee maker and prefer this. Yes absolutely shelled peanuts. I looked on amazon but was not to thrilled with the selection.

Deb...usually I always wake up before the alarm. Been ages since I have over slept. I love the Ike alarm!! Wasn’t too long ago that we had the GiGi alarm. It can be so hard training a new puppy. Bob and I were just saying last night..after Chester we almost did not get another puppy. And after all the house training with GiGi we can’t imagine not having her. We love her. Sounds like you have a great Vet.

Valerie...I completely forgot about Flex Train. I liked that workout and did it alot like you did. Been a while so it may feel fresh now. Hot Tub to me is certainly a better choice than Core work any day!! Lol!!! We visit Bob’s parents in Navarre, Florida for Thanksgiving and leave Saturday. We love going there for Thanksgiving. We come home on Black Friday then cook a turkey dinner for ourselves and our son.

Carolyn...my husband and I love peanuts in the shell and eat them frequently. We are all so different aren’t we! Very nice you host Thanksgiving. Your daughters visit don’t they? I agree you always do great with Cathe’s rotation.

Judy...I completely understand why Chris would rather stay close. Funny you mentioned riding your bike to work. I used to do the same. A couple times a week I would ride 24 miles to work and ride home. EVERYONE thought I was insane!!! Too funny. Great workouts. I love that you have an active recovery week.

I will be packing tomorrow and then flying out Saturday morning. May not get to post again till Sunday. Have a great night all!!

Valerie, you cake looks better than the one in my Cooking light cookbook. It uses egg substitute and reduced fat margarine and has dates in it with the apples and apple pie spice. It is called Fresh Apple Snack Cake. No frosting though. Just cake.

Judy, I looked at those Jari Love workouts. So this one has decent music. I think one or two of her later ones had some music I kind of liked. The latest on I purchased I of hers really hurt my hip and knees when doing the cross back lunge sort of thing off and on both sides of the step. I had to get off and do the move on the floor. She does generally have different versions of the moves on a lot of her workouts so different levels can do them. That is good news that the endoscopy is scheduled earlier. That means maybe finding some relief sooner.
