Pentagenarians & Beyond: W?B 10/30

Hi Everyone,

I'm feeling much better this week than last. I did a few KCM workouts over the weekend and yesterday. I wanted to do the ones that I haven't done before her new ones get here. :) I did Trim Down, Circuit Burn, Slim Sculpt, and Home Gym Intervals. Today was the start of the Spinerval Super 6 training program. I did a 2 hour aerobic base ride.

Deb-I'm glad that your appointment went well and that the cyst is nothing to worry about.

Diane Sue-That's great news! I'm glad that you are feeling better and getting back to your workouts.

Lori-I printed out SB's Gratitude Challenge and think I will do some of the workouts this week. It sounds like you are getting some great workouts in!

Lynda-it got up to 75 in SE Michigan today. I was surprised to see it get so warm again. It looks like we will be getting some rain tomorrow.

Carolyn-I wish I was better with cameras too. My husband and I only use our iPhones to take photos. Before that we had a small Nikon that I could never seem to get to work right.

Valerie-It's good that you are looking out for your neighborhood, but too bad that you have to be so vigilant. Things are getting worse in that way around here too.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Good evening ladies...

This morning was SB Upper Core & Cardio and Weights followed up with JS's Steady State Cardio.

Diane Sue...I very rarely leave the house without jewelry. Even on weekend I need to at least have earrings on. Funny my dogs could care less about the heavy bag! How have you been feeling? You have been doing great with your workouts.

Deb...glad to hear it is nothing to worry about. That must have been a relief. Really hoping GiGi and Nilla become friends or at least tolerate eachother. :)

Valerie..that stinks about your camera. Wow! Those thugs are out in full force. Thank goodness you spotted them. I agree once they have been made the leave immediately.

Carolyn...that leg workout sounds great. I will review the clip and sure will wnt to,try it out. Thanks for the overview.

Lynda...yes it has been cold her on the morning! When taking GiGi for our morning walks it has been in the mid 20's. Brrrrrr. I am not ready for the cold weather at all. Great job adding on back work. Every now and then after a workout sometimes I feel the need to work a body part that felt left out. I lways feel great that I did this.

Judy...I thought I read the new KCM will be shipping soon. Amazing how quickly she gets these dvds out. Her start to finish is amazing. Awesome workouts!!! Glad you are feeling better espcially starting the training program.

We pretty much use our phones for picture taking too. Although we do have a Fuji that I bought for Mexico. It is water proof and takes great pictures when we are jet skiiing or playing in the ocean. I purchased a strap that has a floating device on it in case we drop in the ocean it will float! We have taking some really cool pictures that otherwise we would never have been able to get with our phones.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, we did go look for a rug though, not too successful. The temp hit 71 yesterday, unreal for the first of November. I like it! :)

Valerie, I think most people are using their phones now to take quick pictures. John has a Nikon DSL camera, with all kinds of special lenses etc. Not too convenient to take around with you for quick pics. I have a small Nikon, quick and easy, "point & shoot", smaller than a cell phone, but who wants to carry that around all the time? I thought there was a way to edit the pics on picturetrail, but maybe I am wrong. Good that you are showing those crooks that there are diligent people in that area that are not going to put up with their shenanigans!

Carolyn, that workout sounds tough! I liked reading the description until the part with the ball and burpess!

Diane Sue, great workouts! I still think you need to slow it down though..your system has been compromised and it would be easy to have a relapse. I have one of those Kirby's too and we never use it. I'd like to donate it or if not, put it by the curb!

Lynda, great workout, but yes, she doesn't do much back work on those compound workouts. The DR Monday was an ENT....only for the nodule ( or cyst) near my vocal chord. Today is the guy that is supposedly working on the acid reflux.

Judy, glad you are feeling better! Great KCM workouts! What did you use for Home Gym Intervals? spin bike? Did you like that one? I liked the concept, but found that I needed to really speed up on the cardio part.

Lori, I am the same, always have earrings on, but they are hoops, and stay on all the time. I think one Gigi settles down a bit, her and Nilla will be good together.

Dr appointment this morning, with the Gastro one.....I have questions and I hope he will have answers!

Take care,

Deb it seems there is a screening testing is that if it discovers anything not absolutely textbook normal, the docs are obligated to check it out even if it seems like nothing and doesn't bother you. hope the gastro person today is helpful.

I did rock'em sock em yesterday. enjoyed it!. the first time a month ago I pulled a muscle across my ribs and so I was careful not to repeat that. easy to see how that could happen. lots of fast twisting movement but fun and not too complicated.

we had one of the rainiest months on record with October. measurable rain on 27 of 31 days. usually October is a good hiking and riding month, but not this year. still very mild temps, no frost at all yet. rainy today, but then thurs and Friday will be dry.

I used to be a big earring person too, but after I got a second hole punched in my ears... must be 15 years ago now.... I became sensitive to nickel. I always had the problem of my skin turning dark from metal exposure, but suddenly my ears got red, itchy, inflamed. I tried different tactics for years but nothing worked well enough to make wearing earrings worth it. I can still wear rings on my fingers but always take them off at night and that seems to be OK.
Judy glad you are feeling better. remind me again about Spinervals. are these DVD's ? 2 hours on a spin bike! wow.

My neighbor's DIL works for the casino so neighbor passes along info about all the robberies. It sounded like we have confirmation of a homeless camp near here that the casino security is supposedly "watching". I noticed a large tent in an odd place back in the trees and think that's probably it. near the casino administration building but I'm not sure whose property it's on. we have a massive problem in this area with homeless people living out of their cars or in tents in public areas, under freeways, you name it. I know they aren't all criminals and drug addicts but enough are to cause concern. I don't remember when this became such a big problem but the last several years it's gotten totally out of hand.

Wednesday is the day that my workout is later in the morning, if at all because of my WW meeting. I just finished the JS 30 Minute Fat Blaster Walk and the Barre Amped Barre Power Stretch.

Judy, so glad that you are feeling better and able to participate in the Spinerval's challenge.

Deb, I hope the gastro appointment went well today and they can start to give you some answers.

Diane Sue, that's good news that no treatment is required for your thyroid. I mentioned that I have thyroid issues and now my sister is having similar problems. She is being treated now and has recently started taking the hormone.

Lynda, I think that you and Deb will like Live Legs on Fire. There aren't many burpees and the ball work is not too bad.

Hi to Lori, Valerie, Josie, and Caitlin.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both Sweat workouts (47:13).

Carolyn, thanks for the review! I think I will try that one tomorrow.

Deb, good luck on your appointment today! I hope it doesn't turn into a chronic problem for you. What kind of rug are you looking for? There's a place in Pittsfield (Paul Rich) and every year they have a big sale on Orientals.

Valerie, I'm glad you enjoyed RS. I remember your earlier experience with it not being very positive. I think it's a good workout and not hard except for one place where Cathe screws up the cueing--a series of kicks with a knee lift. I finally figured that out and do what I'm supposed to do instead of listening to her.

Judy, we are having a spell of weather that is definitely warmer than November usually is. I bet you are happy to get back to your Spinerval challenge.

Lori, Max seems to have surprised a skunk this morning, and even though he didn't get sprayed, he must have walked into it--you know, how they recommend you spray perfume overhead and walk into it? Kim is giving him a bath and also using a combo of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (a recommendation from the vet) to return him to his sweeter self. Just to make it worse, he also decided to roll in something when Kim went over to the hayfield. I guess Max thought he would go for broke as long as he was getting a bath later.

Diane Sue, good news about the thyroid!

I'm off to get some highlights this afternoon.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

Hi Everyone,

I did another 2 hour ride this morning, very light aerobic. My heart rate never went over 130, so it was very comfortable.

Deb-Home Gym Intervals wasn't one of my favorite KCM workouts. I did use my spin bike, but I just didn't care that much for the format. I guess I would rather ride when I ride, and not get off and on the bike like that. I might try the workout again jogging in place for the cardio interval and see if that works better.

Valerie-Spinervals are dvd workouts, all different lengths. They have downloads too, and now they also have streaming.

Carolyn-Great combination! I love the JS walks and Barre Amped.

Lynda-it did rain today but it's still in the 60's, so pretty warm for November. I had to turn the heat off yesterday.

Lori- I think the new KCM's are going to be shipped before the end of November. She does get her dvds out quickly.

Hi to Josie & Caitlin!

Judy

Today I did Low Impact Circuit cardio and lower body mix and added on the abs 65 minutes, 430 calories. I was waiting on some hot water for my shower so I also did Turbo Barre, just the firewalker band portion and the stretch, 15 minutes, 38 calories. Tomorrow I am unsure if I will get anything in. I will have to see. It is the yearly grandparents day at my grandson 5 and granddaughter 16's school. One is shortly after school starts and the other is in the afternoon. I always am the grandparent that takes the young ones to the book fair afterward and returns them to class. The others usually exit pretty quickly. There is always pictures with the grandparents as well. My husband works this time. He makes it once in awhile but most of the time it is me.
Family dinner tonight, I have the butternut squash beef Whole 30 Beef Stew in the slow cooker. Salad and biscuits for those who want it.

Judy, nice workouts. I want Kelly's new workouts and intend to get them after they come out. I let the presale get past me. I am not much of a sit around person. I was starting to get bored. I am glad to be doing more of a workout. Also got quite a bit of organizing and moving shelving and stuff done the last few days. My workout room was getting to be a cluttered mess. It needed thorough dusting, cleaning, and organizing.

Lori, I rarely go a day even at home without earrings and makeup on. It just makes me feel better :) I am sure Nilla and Gig will get along well eventually. I was just looking at one of the later pictures of Mudd and Gertie together, curled up by my barstool with Gertie laying her head on Mudd's back. It was a sweet picture of the two. It was a like and tolerance relationship I think. Mudd would get upset at Muffins when Muffin was around and I think she wanted Muffin to back off of Gertie. She was willing to protect Gertie along with putting up with Gertie :)

Deb, too bad that you did not find the rug that you were looking for. I remember when my husband wanted to send me a Persian rug from Afghanistan because we had all tile floors through most of the house. He sent me pictures to choose from. The only thing was the expense of shipping it so I declined the rug. It is so warm here that I am still wearing sandals and the fans and air are still going. Those Kirby's break down to a more compact unit but it takes time and then I have to drag all of the parts back upstairs so I can re assemble once the stairs are done so I do not take it apart. I just lug it along with me. I hate to go spend money on a lighter unit as there is no place to store it. Our downstairs coat closet houses the hot water heater. I guess that was so they could put air unit in the kitchen closet for downstairs and the other air unit is upstairs. A small coat closet upstairs that is packed at this point. I can barely get the Kirby in that closet with the hot water heater. I hope the doctor for the acid reflux is helpful today. I am trying to be a bit easier on myself and do more stretching stuff. It is hard for me to hold back.

Valerie, I could see pulling something when getting too aggressive with something like Rock'm Sock'm. I try to remember I am not wanting to jerk my arm out of it's socket when I pounding :) It is easy to forget till I get hurt. That would be disconcerting having a bunch of people camping out near your homes. It is good that you have someone that gives you the heads up.

Carolyn, I remember my mother having problems with a goiter for years. Thyroid problems can sometimes be bad. I have read that the basic testing they do does not catch everything. Sometimes things like Hashimoto goes undetected for years when someone is having problems.

Lynda, I really do like the Ice Sweat workouts. I feel like I am going to get tired of them one of these days because I use them so much. I think they have sort of taken the place of the low impact workouts from Ripped with Hiit. I guess I never noticed the cuing on RS. I am usually trying to get more footwork in and I do the knee up thing with jumps before Cathe says to just to up the intensity. I guess I am probably too busy doing my own thing.

Speaking of cuing. On Barre Amped Strength and Stretch Upper Body Stretch, I do not know if I am missing a cue or if she forgets to do both sides when she threads the arm under. I have just started doing one side till she starts talking again and hurry and hit the other side for a bit. I like that stretch and the way she does it. Maybe, I should just pause and do the other side? Or maybe she changes and I am not catching it.

Judy, I usually get a pretty good calorie burn using home Gym Intervals on my spin bike. I stay on it a bit longer than Kelly though. My weights are already handy so it does not take much to grab them. I also add a bit more cycling at the end. I use it with the Tread Climber as well. I like it, but I tend to get bored on the bike. I have Tabata Trek with Mindy Mylrea which is hiit floor work between cycling. That one is pretty aggressive. It is also not a real favorite of mine though. Looking forward to Cathe's new one.

Diane Sue-I am the same way. I don't like to sit around and I hate not being able to workout. I always feel better when I'm doing some kind of workout.

Valerie, that was an incredible amount of work. I can see why you would need the wall from the picture with the house in it. It seems that you would have a lot of wash out when rain is heavy. It looks really nice. I love the scenery and pictures in the other folder as well. Such pretty flowers as well.

thank you all for looking! the hardest thing is to make everything perfectly level, starting with a row of bricks below the dirt level. we had to buy a new level since the one we had was 2 feet long and too big to fit into the area. once you are level .... in all 3 dimensions.... you need to fuss with gravel and dirt and a compactor. as you go up, keep each layer level. it's hard to do, really!. just a little pebble will make it off. so important to be "anal" about the first row.
diane sue, we actually are quite stable dirt-wise. in one picture, you can see an old log sticking out on the left. that will go next. we had stabilized the "drop off" with a log wall for 20+ years, using buried "dead boys"....logs that go perpendicular to the wall... buried in the dirt. the wood was disintegrating though, so had to do something. this will be permanent and last WAY longer than we will.
we have a series of 4 walls below our house that keeps it stable. they used treated wood timbers, built before the concrete locking bricks were available.
the wall is located way below the road so it is challenging just to get materials down to the level we are working at. we need to back our loaded truck downhill and then unload a piece at a time, & carry to the wall site. NO WAY would any commercial service bring the materials down there.

we need to get another load of bricks and continue. the wall to the right is done, but needs to go longer to the left but the slope diminishes quickly. we don't have anything level anywhere so it's a challenge.

I did total body metabolic again today, along with the core workout. I do like that one. about an hour total. I am not quite up to the weights cathe uses. still using 8's when she uses 10's most of the times. I'm still squirrely about front raises.

the flower pics were from a bike ride 2 years ago. someone unknown person planted containers at the ferry landing on Guemes Island where we did a bike ride. they were so pretty! I think the other pics I was able to post here before, bike ride, and some hikes near Mt Baker. no idea why those would upload and transfer and wall pictures would not.

Good morning,

The appointment with the Gastro Dr went well. He is saying that he does not think it is an acid issue. It is a sensitivity issue of some kind. If it was, the meds would have worked by now. He has a 4 step plan of attack. I am going off the med, (slowly weaning off by taking it every other day for 2 weeks), then he said I can try a round of apple cider vinegar, ( or I guess lemon juice if I wanted), if that doesn't work, the next step is a script of a coating med for a couple weeks. If that doesn't work, a test called an impeedence (sp?) test. At least he is open to believing that it can be caused by other things and wants to help with addressing what that can be.

Valerie, I can see how doing a Kickbox workout with a lot of enthusiasm could pull a muscle easily. I can't believe that they let a homeless camp stay. There would be such an uproar if that happened here.

Carolyn, how long have you been doing WW? It is different to hear that people actually go to the meetings now a days, most do it online.

Lynda, eww..., a skunk! I hope the bathing with peroxide and baking soda worked. At least he rolled into something before the bath, and not after. We are looking for the rug that goes up the stairs and is in the hall outside of the bedrooms. It is the only regular carpet we have in the house. All others are oriental rugs. Let me know what you think of that live leg workout.

Judy, you are doing great with the spin workouts! I am amazed at the length of time that you are able to do. :). I think I did the Home Gym interval workout twice, and felt the same way.

Diane Sue, Grandparent's Day sounds so nice! I would like that Whole 30 Beef Stew recipe! You can come and organize my workout room any time you'd like. :).

Valerie, great pictures! That wall is really nice. So much work but it was worth it.

Not sure what is up for today, maybe a workout..we'll see.

Take care,

Poor Max.. getting into a skunk spray zone... with their sensitive noses, you would think that would be intolerable for dogs but it must not be. do you have to "do" him in the bath tub?

Deb, great that the doc is trying another approach. do you keep a food log? or try an elimination diet?

we might work on the wall this weekend again although the urgent part is done.

Deb, the homeless problem out here is huge. first off our climate is fairly mild. we get a few days each winter when it freezes, but generally much milder temps than much of the country. makes it possible for people to live outside in tents, maybe not luxuriously, but they don't freeze to death. water, food supplies stay liquid, etc. the greater seattle area is going thru extreme boom times with rents and home prices going crazy, and it doesn't take many problems to not be able to afford to live here. builders are knocking down low rent buildings and replacing with upscale condos, apartments, high end housing. add in the opioid, heroin and meth problems. rents and prices are like san Francisco. many west coast cities are having similar problems with homeless people. the problem is even if they are arrested, they don't have a place to go, so at best they move their tent to a new spot. social programs are set up to find housing but there's not enough spaces, and the druggies don't want to abide by rules, sometimes they can't bring their pets, oh... it goes on and on. so people are camping everywhere. and along with the homeless issue, the drugs, there's the property crime that goes with it. depressing problem.
think we will ride today either road or mt. not sure yet.

Today I did Upper Body Trisets from the Low Impact series. I had planned to do a live upper body workout but had technology issues. When I turned on the computer, Windows needed to update and I didn't want to wait. I selected a dvd instead. I'm glad that I didn't wait because the update took an hour. The Upper Body Trisets uses the ball which is what I wanted with the live workout.

Deb, I started WW again last November. For me the meetings and group support provided there are a critical component for success. Now there is wonderful support online with the Connect feature for members who can't or don't want to attend meetings.

Diane Sue, I love it when I can attend Grandparents day or other events at my grandchildren's school. We have to time our trips just right to do that. I have a recipe for beef and butternut chili from Cooking Light that is very good. It's really more of a beef stew than chili.

Hi to everyone.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live Legs on Fire (49 min.). Somewhat ambivalent about this one. I don't like a 40 lb barbell, so I wore my 10 lb. vest and a 30 lb. barbell. I don't like burpees, and have never been very good at those roll-ins with one leg up in the air. On the other hand, there is lots of variety, good work on the ball for the outer thigh, a lot of slide and glide but with weights, making it more challenging. I'm also a bit wary on those diagonal forward lunges. They don't feel good on my knees. I would give it a 4-.

Deb, the bathing worked well with the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Kim has some old bathtubs outside that he has used for watering cattle, so he filled it one up with water and gave Max a soaking. It was warm enough yesterday to do outside. Gee, can you recall any recent changes in your diet that might account for a sensitivity? The heartburn seemed to come out of nowhere. It's good that he is doing a careful followup.

Valerie, that is a very impressive wall you have created. It also looks like a lot of work. Yes, I've seen a lot of homeless in San Francisco and San Diego. Not sure what can/should be done to address the issue when some of it is drugs, some of it is mental health, and some of it is just people down on their luck. I don't think we have but a few homeless people around here because there is some very cheap housing available.

Judy, I haven't even thought about buying any dvds with all these live workouts. I'm just patiently waiting for our next Cathe dvds.

Carolyn, I did that one from the LIS a lot, but I always thought the music was a bit strange. The college is very good about encouraging its employees on WW--they pay all the fees. Lots of Wellness programs from HR.

Diane Sue, yes, I really love the Sweat workouts too. I just prefer the no-impact cardio and I wish Cathe would do another LIS, which I used a lot.

Hi to Josie and Caitlin!

Today I did URX-MT Keli Roberts Poly Performance Metabolic Plyometric Circuits, 50 minutes, 327 calories. I always enjoy these Urban Rebounder workouts. I used mostly the 2# sand weights. I picked up the 3# for a couple of lower body focused segments. One of the 3# has lost a lot of sand. I think next time I want 3# I will just used dumbbells The dvd kept freezing. I took it out at 42 minutes and cleaned it. After that it kept freezing and finally stuck to where I could not move forward right at the last of the short ab segment. I went ahead and did some of it and some of the stretch then bounced to the total workout time. I guess I need to take it to the video store and see if they can polish out the scratches because it is not dirty. I followed this with Cathe's High Reps biceps, triceps, abs, and stretch, 22 minutes, 90 calories. I kept this pretty light today. The most I used was 15's for the hammer curls. Total time was 72 minutes and calories burned 417.
