Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/28

This morning I did Coffey Fit Raw Boxing, and Bell, Bands, 30 minutes, heart rate average 127, max 164, 194 calories, 1,875 steps. She just put this up yesterday, so I changed my mind about Fit Split Mixed Impact. I really liked this, it got my heart rate up with no impact. Kelly uses a 20# kettlebell, 2# dumbbells for the boxing, and 1 loop band for the short floor segment.
Format was like this:
boxing
double hand swings
boxing
alternating swings
boxing
single arm swings 25 reps each
boxing
figure 8's
loop for clams and bridges with knees in out
crunch/reverse crunches

Deb, thanks for getting us started.

This morning I decided to do yoga. I did the Ultimate Yogi Yin Yoga for 1 hour 5 minutes and 105 calories burned. My body feels so good after the long slow poses.

Deb, thanks for getting us started today.

Diane Sue, the Raw Boxing, Bands, and Bells sounds like a good workout. Great job getting it done today.

Valerie, I hope you are having a safe trip home.

Hello to Judy and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.

we drove yesterday, 11 hours to get back. no traffic until around here, and then it got awful quickly. also raining here which didn't help. we missed a crash by a couple minutes, people had just crawled off to the shoulder. the traffic here is beyond awful. I am really tired today but thankfully no head cold materialized. I need to grocery shop. no food here! out of coffee.

I did not get to travel much as a child. I don't know why but my parents never went anywhere. it was a big deal to go 50 miles. we never visited any parks or did much of anything. my fathers idea of vacation was to paint the house and my mother didn't drive. so weird, how could you not learn to drive?? so I got into driving and hiking and visiting new places. a lot of those original places were terrific 40 years ago but are over crowded now. the world of tourism has discovered US parks and it will never be uncrowded again. off season helps though, and there was no comparison between mid September ... awful and mid October....pleasant. people around but not packed to the rafters. diane sue Zion is an overcrowded one. there is talk of limiting the number of people who can enter per day or trying to get rid of most cars. Yosemite is the same way.

Deb how is kylee doing? hope she is better.

Hello everyone,

I can't believe how the time just gets away from me. The puppy is like having a baby around, you can only really do stuff when he is in his crate sleeping. All the other time you have to watch him like a hawk, as he gets into everything!

Diane Sue, that KCM sounds like fun. :)

Carolyn, great that the yoga made you feel so good.

Valerie, good to hear you had a safe trip home, except for the traffic near there. We didn;t go anywhere when I was young. My mother did not drive either. When I turnd 14, we took a trip to California to visit my uncle. That was the first time on a plane. It was such a big deal back then. We went each year after that. No camping, or any nature stuff for us though. My parents were not into that kind of thing. Kylee is much better. She is playing with Ike like crazy, I have to separate them at times and put him in his crate, just so he can sleep and I can get something done.

Hi to Judy & Lori,

Take care,

Hi Everyone,

This morning I did KCM Cardio Pump #2, Pyramid Pump.

Deb-I'm so glad Kylee is better. That's great that she is playing with Ike. It sounds like they will get along very well.

Carolyn-Yin Yoga sounds so good! I am definitely doing that one this week.

Diane Sue-Great workout! I almost did the new Raw workout today but decided to wait until later this week.

Valerie & Deb-My mother did not drive either. We did go on trips though. My parents loved to go to Wisconsin so we usually went up there every summer for a few days.

Hi to Lori!

Judy

Carolyn, I do a stretch a lot on Sunday's before church, but since I missed half of my workout yesterday I decided to get it done today. I need to think about next weeks workouts. Kelly came out with the new workout fairly quickly after just putting up the two weight vest workouts.

Valerie, I don't remember crowds. We went camping on Pike's Peak in Colorado when I was 12. We lived in Denver area and did travel around the state a lot just to look at scenery. I remember it being chilly up there and wearing jackets. My great aunt cooked pancakes for breakfast on a camp stove and they were doughy. Funny the things that we remember from childhood. I ate a lot anyway and never want to see a half cooked pancake again. It is a shame there are crowds. I would guess summer and early fall would be a busy time.

Deb, I remember having to use the crate a lot. Gertie tore up every piece of bedding and had to go out often or I was cleaning up. I was able to close doors to limit her area, and let my other dog go to another part of the house to get away from her. It won't be long and she will let you do more ;) They are like having a baby crawling around the house. Glad Kylee is doing better and playing with Ike.

Judy, my mother drove, but we only had one car for a lot of years and travel was usually my Dad as the driver.

Good morning,

It has been raining here for 3 days now. Not a great time for taking a puppy outside 60 times a day! I guess it's better than snow.

Judy, you and Carolyn seem to get so much out of yoga, I wish I could like it. I am looking forward to the new Cathe series, especially with 2 extended stretches included.

Diane Sue, You are so right...I remember weird stuff from childhood ( like you with the awful pancakes that you ate anyway). You would wonder why we remember such mundane things? I could not survive this puppy time without using a crate. Plus, I believe it is very important for them. Kylee still sleeps in hers and loves it. Also, you have to use them at dog shows, so if she had never been crate trained, we would be hard pressed to participate in any shows.

Hi to Lori, Carolyn and Valerie,

Take care,

Deb, I had snow when I was training Gertie. It was not fun. Crates are wonderful. Gertie goes in hers in the sun room and sleep a lot. At night she moves frome one pet bed to another and her crate. I pulled it out for her when we have had leaks. She kept jumping into tubs of water to get to her crate.

Deb I liked yoga a lot when I went to a class, usually once or twice a week for an hour. I have not been able to get interested in doing it to a DVD. I thought Yin yoga was boring and tedious, even in a class setting, but Carolyn likes it a lot. who knows why it appeals to one person and not the next.

we are also into a rainy pattern that will go for months. nov and dec are usually very wet. not thrilled with it either.

oh gosh... weird foods from childhood! I eat nothing from then. developed a hatred for mayonnaise, hard boiled eggs, over cooked vegetables, sausage/"lunch meat". rsoggy egg salad sandwiches were like those half cooked pancakes diane sue talked about. My mother and grandmother could bake wonderful cakes, cookies, coffee cakes, pies, but didn't do well with main dishes. they were a product of their times and that's what people ate then, plus my father was a crank about only "meat and potatoes". I taught myself how to cook never made anything like that.

too funny Judy..... Wisconsin was a destination for vacations. we went to Door county a few times, and uncle had a cabin in northern Wisconsin. they used to go watch the bears at the garbage dump for excitement. Really!! I never went.

my mother finally learned to drive after my father passed away. it was awful. she finally passed the drivers test but never was comfortable driving and was a menace because she was so tentative and uncertain.

Today I did Ellen Barrett’s Peace, Love, and Cardio which is a fusion of walking, pilates, and yoga moves. It was 30 minutes and 116 calories burned. My average heart rate was 119 and maximum heart rate was 161. After that I did Jessica Smith’s Core Control from her Build Balance and Inner Strength dvd. That was 32 minutes and 200 calories burned. Average heart rate was 123 and maximum heart rate was 146.

Deb, I didn’t always like yoga. In fact I felt like you for many years. I did Stretch Max and another stretch dvd for flexibility. I tried yoga many times but found it boring and too slow. It was only with Cathe’s Yoga Relax that I started to do it regularly. There are many excellent Stretch dvds that you can try that aren’t yoga when you are able to do so. JS also has some short ones on her YouTube channel. I am looking forward to the extended stretches in the new series too. I love the extended stretch from STS.

Valerie, I can understand how you would find Yin Yoga boring. I like it more each time that I do it because of the benefits that I feel in my back, hips, and knees. I wouldn’t recommend it to someone new to yoga however. We were fortunate in that my mother was an excellent cook. My cooking is different from hers, but I learned all of the basics from her.

Diane Sue, I like to do yoga or something light if I do a workout on Sunday.

Hello to Judy and Lori.

Valerie-I don't think we went to Door County, I'm not sure why though. It would have been a good place to visit. The places I remember going were Winter, Hayward and Ladysmith. They were very scenic areas. I remember seeing a few bears too.

I don't remember much about Door county judy, except I think they grew cherries there.... maybe. for some reason that pops up when I think of it. Hayward ( and Hurley?) is familiar as well as Ladysmith. I remember going downhill skiing up there somewhere.... Iron Mt, Michigan? there used to be a few not exactly fancy downhill ski areas but Wisconsin used to get a lot more snow than it does now. maybe they still exist. climate change may have had an impact. Wisconsin winters are nothing like they used to be. the weather patterns have changed.

Carolyn, I used to pay for two classes a week. if I missed my regular 7 am one, I went to the Yin class to try it out. it was Ok. I did not like sitting in one position like that.

We would go in the spring or summer, but I'm sure there was a lot of snow there in the winter. I agree that weather patterns have changed. There is less snow now here in Michigan and in the part of Illinois/Iowa where I lived before.

Workout done. I have errands I have to go do and my husband is off today. I will post and come back later.
I did Fit Split Mixed Impact cardio 28 minutes, 195 calories, heart rate average 132, max 159, met 6.1, 2,574 steps. I then did Fit Split Metabolic with the abs mix, 44 minutes, 863 steps, met 5.0, 241 calories, heart rate average 113,max 150. Total time was 72 minutes and calories burned 436. I have been going through the Fit Split workouts. I don't think that I have done Cardio Shred yet. Not sure that I want to but maybe..... I want to do some Kelly weight work the rest of the week

Valerie, I would imagine rainy season puts the brakes on getting outside as much for hiking and cycling. I guess pretty much anything. I took cooking classes all through high school to the advanced classes. I liked cooking and cooked dinners at home from 12 years old and up. So, we did have new recipes. But, my tastes have changed over the years. I still carry some favorite recipes from my grandmother that I make occasionally. I used to love the more active long yoga workouts, but have come to like slower ones as well.

Carolyn, what I like about yin yoga is how slow it is and how you really hold those poses. I think it does a lot for flexibility. I started yoga with P90X yoga and then started purchasing others. I have some that I have not done in years though. Just the personality of some of the instructors bothers me from the older ones. There are a lot now that are not so New Age odd type of yoga workouts.

Judy, there is a lot of snow from pictures our friends have in Wisconsin. It was always funny to us because they could keep their house so cold in the winter and not feel the cold after living there.

Deb, we always had our dogs to where we would just say go to bed and they would run and get in their crates. They wanted the cookie that they would get ;) Later we didn't really need a cookie that much and they still went in feeling hopeful I guess. It comes in handy when you have strange guests or workers come in.

Good evening ladies,

Had some good workouts since my last post. Thursday was Linda Woolridge drop sets lower and Friday was drop sets upper. These were hard! Wow she fatigues your muscles. Saturday was Lekfits recent bounce that has some great sculpting. I barely was able to workout on Saturday. My husband and I stayed up late Friday night watching the Red Sox. I went to bed at 2:45am and it was still going. I paid for this. Felt horrible all day. Sunday was a rest day and it was needed! This morning I bounced 45 mins Free Style to Mama Mia Here We Go Again. Was a lot on fun. I plan to continue on later in the week to finish the movie. :)

Linda Woolridge is becoming a great substitute for SB. This morning I bought a few of her downloads. She was having a 99 cent sale. Can’t go wrong with that. Plus they were even cheaper due to the conversion to US dollars.

Diane Sue..Great that you enjoyed the new raw workout. Need to substitute a dumbbell for the kettlebell though. Not sure how this will work. Yes she came out with 3 rather quickly. P90x yoga was the first yoga I did. I enjoyed it while I was doing it.

Carolyn...I always say I am going to add in some yoga but I never do. I want to like it but it just never sticks.

Valerie...such a long ride. My mom was amazing. She was a single parent with 5 children and always made sure we had great vacations. When my dad passed, she was 31 and did not drive. She got her license immediatley and eventually was driving to so many vacation destinations. To this day I do not know how she afforded the places we went. We camped wherever we went so I am sure this helped. She was amazing. She took us to Disney and Canada to name a couple of places..and we camped in a pop up camper and a tent every time.

Deb...so glad to here Kylee is better! When we first got GiGi we really second guessed if we should have done this. We were exhausted! We quickly got over it as we are so in love with her. We crate trained also and we agree this is the best way. We bought her a pink princess costume for halloween. She is in daycare on halloween and the doggies are all dressing up. Can’t have her be the only one not dressed!! Lol!!

Judy...great pump workouts!!

Have a great night all!!!

Hi Everyone,

Today I ended up doing my long indoor ride (50 miles) for the year. I wasn't sure that I was going to do one this year and I didn't even have it planned for today. I started out with a short (50 minute) Spinerval. I was at 14 miles at that point and I decided to keep going. I am very happy that I got it done! Now I am going to spend the rest of the year focusing on strength training and other workouts. I will do short rides, but no long ones until next year.

Deb-It's been raining here too. It rained all weekend. Like you said, it's better than snow, so I won't complain. I am really looking forward to the new Cathe series too! The extended stretches sound very nice.

Lori-Great job with the LW workouts! Drop Sets is really a good one. I'm definitely going to look at her downloads. Your mom sounds amazing! That is awesome that she learned to drive at 31.

Valerie-We used to go to Monroe, Wisconsin for cheese, but that was just a day trip since it's so close to the Illinois border. I ran a half marathon in Madison in 1996. I loved Madison! I would have moved there if I'd had an opportunity back then.

Diane Sue-That's what I like about Yin Yoga too, holding the stretches for longer periods. It really seems to help my low back and hips. I agree about not liking some of the instructors. I've bought a few yoga dvds that I ended up giving away because of that.

Carolyn-Yoga Relax and Yoga Max were the first yoga workouts that I did. I also did Jill Miller's Yoga Tune-ups, and some of Jessica Smith's. Then I bought Ultimate Yogi after I started to see the benefits of doing yoga regularly.

Have a great night!

Judy

Judy I would have gone to Madison if I'd had a chance too but could not afford it. no money. I went to the campus in Milwaukee which was not the same thing at all.

I am looking again at the new series, thinking I may order it. I am using ICE a lot and maybe another Intermediate series would be good. I have to admit some of the older dvds are probably too intense for me now.

I did Rock em Sock em yesterday, and chiseled Upper body today.
we are needing to have our master bath re done due to an ongoing minor water leak that has flipped everything on its head. it is not a bad leak, but the shower pan was not done right 4 yrs ago. I noticed the floor tile was distorted ( yes, I get credit for noticing) on one side. we had that fixed but were not sure why it was happening. then 6 months ago I noticed the tile on other side of the shower was getting the same swelling. easy to see when you tear it all apart and see what was going on. we have the original contractor back. also will get the original plumber. he made a bad call on the shower pan. hopefully they will fix it and only charge us for materials or some other adjustment.

Lori that is terrific work your mom did. I wish we had been able to visit some interesting places but it never happened.

Good morning,

Ike has been vomiting, so calling the vet at 8:00 when they open. *Sigh*....does it ever end? :(

Diane Sue, poor Gertie, I bet that leak situation has messed up "her world" a bit. P90X yoga was way too long. I gave the DVD to a friend that likes yoga.

Valerie, my father was a "meat & potatoes" guy too, but he ate anything my mother made, including all the Italian stuff that he did not get when he was growing up. He was a raised in the "clean your plate because you never know if you will get another meal" era. When they first got married, my father tried to teach my mother how to drive. The first thing he made her do was back out of a long narrow driveway on to Main Street and she hit a car. He yelled at her, she got out of the car and never tried to drive again.

Carolyn, I will need to go back to Cathe Relax at some time and do a shorter premix. I just need to stick to it and give it a chance.

Lori, your Mom did a wonderful job raising kids on her own etc. and at such a young age to be widowed. Congratulations on the Red Sox win! I am not a fan of baseball but know how great it can be when a home team does well. LOL on Gigi's costume. You need to post pics!

Judy, wow! Great job on that long ride!

Take care,

good morning Deb. maybe Ike caught whatever Kylee had. still with a puppy best to be cautious.

I won't go off on a parent-bashing tirade... my father was a jerk. parents a hopeless missmatch. we could mark calendars when he stopped speaking to her, like from Easter to Thanksgiving. it was usually some nonspecific error, like spaghetti and meatballs instead of meat and potatoes. he wouldn't eat any 'spicy" food. Her spaghetti and meatballs was awful but not spicy. not possible to tell what would set him off. usually no one knew. he was angry, did not speak to anyone for months. 6 months was not unusual. my mother never did anything about it. they should have never married, and fixed the mistake with a divorce in a NY minute. whatever. both gone now . I think he tried to teach her to drive early on but as you would think, it was a disaster. she didn't learn to drive until he had passed. it was clear she would need to drive to shop etc. what an awful process. she took lessons and I always felt bad for the poor instructor.

Judy wow 50 miles!. I understand why you would not do that very often. all the padding in the world would not keep me on a bike seat that long.

Lori I am the same way with yoga. I liked it in class that I paid for but it drops off the radar when I have to add it into a home program.
