Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/22/2023

Well my quick trip up and back to see Derek was a pretty wet one with the plus that it didn't rain when I was actually in Marquette. So, when I got up there I went and hiked Sugarloaf before I checked into the hotel and I picked up supper and took it over to their place and stayed for a few hours. Just Derek at first as Aliah was at work, so I got to catch up with him separately. He's more than ready to be done, but less than two months till he graduates. What surprised me in a really good way was that at least the central upper peninsula is mostly still at peak color. Plus the tamaracks were also at peak and so you can drive for miles with a continual view of alternating bright yellow tamaracks and evergreens. Lower Peninsula I drove through a huge variation of color from almost done to peak. And there was fog! Going up a few miles from the bridge you go around a curve and get your first view of it almost straight on and there was no bridge because the straits were so foggy. Going over though it wasn't very noticeable. Coming back over yesterday was much foggier. The approach was fine and the fog was such that you could see at a reasonable distant at your level, but it was hanging pretty low. I could see the outline of the first towers but by the time I got that high there was no water that you could see below. After that it was a bit lower and closer, but nothing that impacted driving, but apparently I lost track of where I was because I was like, oh the cables are swinging back upwards and then oh yeah there's still another tower, but I couldn't see it! Finally not far from it I could see about 2/3rds of it, but I wasn't far past it at all when it completed vanished in the fog behind me. I was very happy that it dispersed once I was away from the water, because I really didn't want to be on I75 with people driving 75 mph in dense fog! It was going to be getting rainy and even at 8 a.m. it was still quite dark, plus I knew my best chance of missing heavy rain south of the bridge was to leave then. I did end up in some pretty heavy, though not downpour rain, so I sat at a rest area for about 20 minutes until it pretty much stopped. I had to shop today so still no workout. Going to be getting back on track tomorrow.

Valerie I'm sorry you're having to deal with so much pain right now. Such a hard thing to have to deal with. Glad you were able to get a ride in yesterday. Good to hear that the visor is helping you.

Hi to everyone!

Today I did a 30 minute chest & tricep workout and 15 minutes of rowing.

Diane Sue-Great job with CDorner Defined Legs and Abs, CDorner Fast Basic Step # 33, STS 2.0 Total Body Trisets upper only mix and the mobility challenge. Yes, I will probably get a lot of walking in at work this weekend. I think that working there a few days a week does help me stay in shape but sometimes it feels like a bit too much.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Upper Body 1, express 2 sets maximum and STS 2.0 Lower Body 1 express, 1 set only.

Valerie-I’m so sorry about the pain you are in. That is really rough. Nice job getting the ride in.

Cathy-Great job getting the hike in on your trip. I really hate driving in fog and rain. Sounds like we will be getting some rain here next week. I think the nice weather is over after tomorrow.

Today I did Raw Kickboxing with the warm up from another workout added that I decided I did not want to do. This was 40 minutes, 209 calories, heart rate 133/163, 2,330 steps. I then did Raw Timesaver Abs, 18 minutes, 47 calories, heart rate 91/114. CDorner total body mobility flow Day 13, 13 minutes, 22 calories. Total time was 72 minutes, 278 calories, 3,553 steps.

Carolyn, nice work on getting in STS 2 Upper Body Express yesterday and STS 2 Lower Body Express 1. It is amazing how long the express workouts are. Plus I always take longer and end up pausing a few times. Planning the equipment ahead and placement takes some work for me. My Fit Tower has to be put together every time because of space.

Valerie, I had to stop the nsaids and a lot of the supplements that are blood thinners ahead of time for the shoulder surgery. My arthritis kicked up along with the shoulder pain. Tylenol never works for me.

Cathy, I would have been stressed out with the fog and rain myself. Glad you didn't have traffic along with it.

Judy, nice work on the chest and triceps workout and rowing today.

Today I did Xtrain All Out Low Impact Hiit premix with step and disc, and then STS 2 Mobility 2. I need to get out and start clearing out the flower bed today. Should be easy pulling since it's rained so much. I had it pretty much cleared out this spring but before I could put seed in we went into that long drought. I also have a couple small maples I want to transplant, but I have to figure out where to put them as there's already a LOT of trees in the natural area.

Judy great job with the 30 minute chest & tricep and rowing workout.

Diane Sue nice job with Raw Kickboxing, abs and mobility workout. Everywhere I went that had fog it didn't actually impact driving speed because it wasn't low enough to the ground. The day I drove up the fog was at higher elevations which actually looked really cool above the fall trees. I've driven in fog that was so dense even if you were very familiar with the drive you'd lose your sense of where you are. I had a bit of that on the bridge, though it was more because I was so intent on the surroundings than a driving issue.

diane sue that is the spot i'm in right now and for the next few months. apparently nsaids interfere with the bone fusing process during healing. it will be a while before I can use any again. I dont take many supplements, only krill oil and glucosamine. not sure when I can restart those. tylenol has to be the most useless drug on the planet. DH says this is a rebound effect after using nsaids for a long time but it sure is unpleasant. almost everything hurts.
I did about an hour of therapy and core work yesterday. that part doesn't hurt but I wont be able to do that type of exercise for months after. and wont be able to ride.
hoping I can use the stationary bike sooner than that because the riding movement doesnt bother me but it might disturb the surgery site.
the issue is, all the surgery guidelines are general. the spine is long. things not ok after neck surgery, are maybe not risky after low back surgery and vice versa. I know there are limits for bending. lifting and tilting but it might not be as restrictive as general guidelines suggest. will find out soon enough. I know the first month is very limited. after a follow up appt in about 3 weeks I will need to review with surgeon based on how I'm doing.

cathy fog sounds kind of mysterious and lovely but a little dangerous. so many people speed over the limit of what they can see and still stop, and fluctuates quickly. like "over driving" your headlight reach. basically, too fast for conditions. we got in a crash like that once. drove into an ice pellet storm when we rounded a corner and visibility went from clear to white out in seconds. got into one of those massive pile ups with I dont known how many cars, maybe 20? everyone tried to slow down but it was suddenly slippery and no visibility. we got totaled as did many others.
are tamaracks like larches? look like evergreen trees but change color and lose their needles in fall? we have tons of larches here mostly at higher elevation. when they turn yellow its spectacular.

Today is a rest day for me.

Valerie, at one time I relied on Advil for my migraine headaches, but I started having rebound headaches when it wore off. After I learned about the rebound effect I stopped taking it. I try to avoid pain medication when possible, but there are times that you have to take it. I hope that whatever meds you have after your surgery will help with your pain.

Cathy, driving in rainy and foggy conditions is certainly not fun. I’m glad that you were able to make the trip up to see Derek. Great job with All Out Low Impact HiiT and Mobility 2.

Judy, nice work with chest and triceps workout and 15 minutes of rowing.

Diane Sue, nice job with Raw Kickboxing, Raw Timesaver abs, and CDorner Total Body Mobility.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Carolyn my DH used to have that issue with migraines and advil. his stomach wont tolerate advil or any nsaids so that was another reason to end that process. he would take it for a migraine and then when he stopped, the headache came back even worse. he ended up getting an oral appliance for sleep that helps alot and has greatly reduced migraines for him.
Im pretty lucky with nsaids. I can take them without stomach upset and get good results. they are anti inflammatory and work very well for me. even after surgery, I take extremely little actual pain meds, like a couple pills total after an ACL repair. they gave me some for the carpal tunnel but I didnt use them. I have a cache of old pain meds I set aside for emergency use and never needed. I will get a decent amount of pain meds for this procedure, a much bigger deal than anything I've had done previously. I will do what they tell me to do.
rode our neighborhood ride again, for about 5 miles. this time DH came along and was pleasantly surprised that on a mt bike, it's a decent workout and not too easy. got cold last night so waited until 2 pm to do it, and it was up to 45 or so.

Cathy, I lost my sense of direction once when I was taking my grandson to school. It was a long drive from my house and his parents were out of country. Somehow because it was foggy and I kept having to pull over and wipe my windows because they were fogged up which was totally frustrating, I made a wrong turn and kept looking for landmarks. I ended up on a piece of new highway work and had to figure out a way to get off. Then I was totally turned around. I called my husband and he got me back in the right direction. Once I saw a certain bank on a corner I was back on track. I had pulled off at a new coffee shop and realized it was not something to be than anxious over because it wouldnt hurt if my grandson who was late for school missed that one day. Part of my anxiety was getting into his private school that would put up blockades at some of the entrances which was totally inconvenient since I did not know my way around it.
Nice work on All Out Low Impact Hiit and Mobility 2 today.

Valerie, they had me stop my hydroxychloroquine until I asked about it 6 months later. I am glad that is all over. I used to take loads of insaids and they would not work as well so I would take more. Whenever I stopped pain was terrible. Now I try everything I can to avoid them other than an occasional I cannot even sleep, and I take one tablet or capsule only. I used a high-quality curcumin supplement that has Boswellia in it that works pretty well at dampening the pain. I know some people that have had good results. It is hard to get exact info looking online. I have tried to find something that would help me know how safe heavy weightlifting would be after a bicep tendon reattachment with a plastic screw. I bet it goes well and you will be fine. You are in good shape and stay active unlike some people would be.

Carolyn, I hope that you have a nice rest day.

Hi to Judy.
