Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 10/01/2023

Yesterday was pretty much a total loss as I didn't fall asleep until almost 5 a.m. So, my accomplishments for the day were mostly reading, watching and playing games. Whatever involved just sitting. Last night I was asleep before 10 and got 8+ hours. Of course, yesterday was shopping day and that was not going to happen, especially with the added bonus of rain. No way was I going to drive. So, that meant today was shopping day. Since I'm going parts workouts, I'll just start those tomorrow and do 3 in a row instead of two. But, I have gotten far more accomplished today so that's a plus. Now fingers crossed for another decent night.

Valerie I'm sure you're glad to finally have a date for the surgery even though it's going to mean a lot of restrictions for awhile. So cool that you got in a 5.5 hour hike! Do you have much in the way of color out there now?

Diane Sue I've had those mixed up appointment times, just thankful I've never actually shown up on the wrong day. Somehow I always manage to catch it.

Carolyn I've definitely found the one area in which having DH working from home is that he almost always deals with plumbers/electricians etc so I don't have to mess with my schedule unless they will be going through my workout area when I want to workout!

Hi to Judy!

the offices around here give so many text reminders that its almost impossible to forget. easy to get complacent and not pay attention at all though.

we get a lot of fall color here in the mountains, less so down low. the mountains are already colorful. when larches turn yellow its jaw dropping. its not as colorful as the midwest because of more evergreens but it also doesnt get bare and brown for months.

we rode today our 15 mile trail and saw lots of fish. not sure if they are spawning or "practicing" but thrashing and zooming around in the shallow areas. really cool to watch. you can see many more fish in deeper water but they dont show up in pics.
hiking an easier one tomorrow with some friends.
yes, my back is killing me. I need to do this no matter what.

No workout. My husband was off today and when I got done with the eye appointment I picked up lunch and had some things we needed to take care of. I did not need my eyes dilated. What I gathered was some new equipment as I have never had them offer it and one woman was guiding the other on how to use it.

Carolyn, nice work on STS 2 Giant sets Total Body Timesaver today. I tuck those appointment cards in my agenda book pocket for reference.

Valerie, the place I get mammograms at text a month ahead of time and then give me one a week before and the day before as reminders. Before I left today the receptionist said she just went me a text with my next appointment. It was there when I got in the car and then a second went through for me to confirm I got the first. Nice ride and being able wot watch the fish. I am sorry that your back is hurting that much.

Cathy, I am useless when I do not sleep. I am glad you got some rest. I hope you sleep and can do what you have planned tomorrow. Some of my appointments are a long drive. I would be kicking myself all the way home if I went the wrong day. No it would not be a pleasant thing.

Thursday I did 35 minutes of rowing and a 20 minute stretch. Yesterday was a rest day. Last week was probably the last warmer weather week around here. This morning it’s 42 degrees and I don’t expect to see temps over 60 again until next spring.

Diane Sue- Great job with CDorner Step with Arm Toning, Intermediate Step, STS 2 Mobility 2, Raw Lower Body Pyramids and the stretches. I remember the Lower Body Pyramid workout. I had some serious DOMS after that. I should do it again.

Valerie-Great job with the 5.5 hour hike, that is amazing! Nice job with the spin, abs and upper body too. I’m glad you have a date for your surgery.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2 Giant Sets Total Body timesaver workout.

Cathy-I’m sorry about the sleep. I had a couple of nights like that when Chris had his surgery and it was rough.

for a true hike that is not especially long. I used to go much longer. you dont go fast so never totally out of breath, but a steady pace with short breath/posture breaks often. endurance work. we went uphill for about 2 hours, wandered around in meadows for an hour or so, and then walked back down. the downhill muscles are the ones that get sore. the only way to not be sore is hike regularly IMO. we did several hikes two weeks ago. didnt matter, I got sore all over again.it isn't bad once you get moving every day. wish it were otherwise but its not. we used to often go on 8 hour trips that involved more climbing. dont want to anymore.

I keep appt cards, write the dates on a small paper pocket calendar. never liked phone calendars. and always white-out to change when something switches. love the phone for so many things but not that.

I dont want to sound like a big drug promoter but there are sleep meds you can have on hand for a bad night. like ambien. its presecription and is easily halved. I use it occasionally rather than toss and turn for hours. some people like OTC benadryl and there are others. not something you take every night but occasionally avoids the lost day

This morning I did STS 2 Body Parts Back and Biceps. I really don't think I'm going to like this part of the rotation the way I set it up, so I'm going to finish out the week and then switch it up. I started righting down potential workouts so I can create a rotation in the next few days.

DH has a tire that got really low, and he opted to keep driving on it and by the time he got home this morning it had 15 lbs of pressure in it. Ugh He's his own worst enemy. Guy is here now putting on the spare, or at least that's what was supposed to happen, I'm just hearing a lot of banging, like hammer whacking something, which is not a sound I associate with tire changes. I am staying put in the house cause I don't want to know. LOL

Valerie so cool you got in a ride and got to see the fish again. I'm very leery of taking any meds that aren't absolutely necessary because my body likes to react to them in unexpected ways. And I am one of that small percentage of people for whom the ingredient in most OTC sleep stuff has the opposite affect ranging from making me a zombie who is neither awake or asleep or super restless so my body just can't chill out. I just need to work on the stuff I can control, which I'm not always good at.

Judy great job with 35 minutes of rowing and a 20 minute stretch. Sad to see the wind today as it's taking away a lot of our leaves much to soon on the trees that have changed, though a fair number are still green.

Diane Sue nice that you didn't need to get your eyes dilated this time. Some places are way over the top with text reminders and some could use a few more.

No work out today as this is my rest day. I’ve been doing a few things around the house that I often push aside. I also decided to make a pot of chicken and barley soup for dinner so I have the stock simmering. This is a beautiful fall day, the first really cool weather that we’ve had.

Cathy, I can’t even imagine how I would feel if I didn’t fall asleep until 5 a.m. I’m really glad that you were able to sleep the following night. I just saw that you posted as I was typing. Great job with STS 2 Body Parts Back and Biceps. My husband reacts the same way to sleep medications. They make him crazy and he doesn’t sleep! We’ve only experienced this once when he was in the hospital a few years ago.

Valerie, nice job with the ride. It sounds enjoyable. I’m sorry that you are having so much back pain. I keep the appointment cards and I have a paper calendar/organizer. I like having the appointments on my phone for a quick reference when we are in the doctors office so that I don’t double schedule things.

Diane Sue, I’m sure that you enjoyed spending time with your husband. Not having your pupils dilated at your appointment was definitely a plus. I need to call next week to see if my new glasses are ready. It usually takes 2 weeks which it has been. They are supposed to call me but I haven’t heard from them yet.

Judy, great job with 35 minutes of rowing and the 20 minute stretch.

Have a great day everyone.

another hike today with our neighbors. its a climb but overall not long, probably 3.5 miles RT. to a high viewpoint over the Sound. sunny and warm, unseasonably nice but it wont last long.

I feel so crappy without sleep I'll try just about anything to avoid it. I don't find it gives me a lot of sleep, nothing like 8 hours but maybe 3. I dont notice anything weird but you have to know yourself. for sure they dont work well for everyone and I avoid unless its unavoidable. if I was still up at 5 am, I'd get up. thats my normal get-up time.

maybe the hammering was trying to break loose some frozen lug nuts?

This morning I started CDorner Cher Believe Dance and wasn't getting my heart rate up and just not enjoying it so stopped after 9 minutes, 28 calories, heart rate 96/109. Then I did CDorner Step Aerobics #50, 55 minutes, 275 calories, heart rate 131/167. Cardio was 64 minutes total and 303 calories, 6,024 steps.
I finished with STS 2 mobility 2, 17 minutes, 33 calories. I also did STS 2 foam rolling upper body but did not wear my Garmin for it.

Judy, nice work on the rowing and stretch Thursday. It got cold here last night and into the 60's today. It will be back to 80's this upcoming week. That pyramid left me sore. I figured I was going to feel it.

Valerie, nice job on hike with your neighbors today. I bet the view over the sound was beautiful. As far as sleep if I get only a few hours I feel ill. I need at least 6 to function, I cannot take Benadyl as that stuff leaves me constantly nodding off and dry mouth the whole next day. I personally do not need something strong, but some things like Relaxium sleep works. I rarely use it because I do not need all that much melatonin if any. I usually use Neuriva with Ashwagandha which definitely helps me relax and with anxiety. I was using the one with the Ashwagandha and 1 mg melatonin, but I cannot find it. I am trying the Ashwagandha & L Theanine Sleep which works sometimes. They do not leave me groggy when I wake up.
The phone Calendar comes in handy when I am at a doctor's office or a family members house and need to get dates and times right. I try to keep it in my agenda book and I print out a calendar so I have it handy.

Cathy, nice work on STS Body Parts Back and BIceps. I am sure you will come up with another way to do it that works for you. Oh, man..... I can't imagine driving around that long with low tire pressure. We have a tire pump take along and we have an air compressor. I used to do it myself when my husband was out of country, but one time my son checked and I was not reading the tire gauge right and had too much air. I recently was low. My husband and I took my car to get the oil changed and they checked and put air in for me. That happens when it goes from cold to warm and warm to cold air. I think our compressors have better readings for getting the right air pressure now. Banging and stuff would make me want to stay away too.

Carolyn, chicken and barley soup sounds really good on a cool day. It was cold enough this morning that our neighbor behind us was wearing a jacket while he was barbecuing. It has almost always taken about two weeks to get my glasses in the past other than the last time. I hope it is soon this time. My husband thought they usually just make them right then. I told him that was when he went to the mall to do it. I don't even if the still do that anymore.

Just finished doing Body Parts Legs and Shoulders no repeats premix. Normally, I don't have an issue with that leg workout, but today one round was plenty for some reason. Yesterday I got a late, I forgot to ask if you could let the dogs out a couple times plea from the neighbor. LOL Surprise birthday for the spouse over by Lake Michigan. It's not a big deal as neither or the dogs want to stay out these days so it takes less than 10 minutes, but when I went over right before bed, there was a strong skunk smell around the back door/garage area and that's the door we use. No way did I want to deal with skunked dog, especially Goldens with all their fur! No leashes around the back area but they each have to collars. One for the electric fence and another when they take them away from home with their ID tags. So I put on one collar and looped the other through so I had a handle and took them out one at a time. Talking to them/the skunk and generally not being quiet in hopes it moved on. Fortunately both were happy to just go and then head back inside. Earlier in the day, I'd tried to walk, but our back right corner had clearly been visited recently by a skunk so I abandoned that plan. Not sure if there's more than one or just one that really gets around. I've actually seen two different ones, very distinctly different white patterns, so there's probably still two around. They aren't really an issue with the cats, but dogs are a whole different thing.

Valerie that's sounds like a hike with great views! Yeah it sounds like it was the lug nuts being stubborn. He has a root canal in the morning and then will hopefully go find a tire place to get it fixed. The guy who came out said there's nothing wrong with the tire. Whole thing was really weird. Maybe a valve issue.

Diane Sue sometimes a workout just doesn't work and you have to switch gears.

Carolyn it's definitely the time of year for soup, though I tend to be a soup person year round. I made chili last night and tonight I'm planning to do a 15 bean soup.
