Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/6

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did Bis and Tris with core on premix 2 (58 min.). Matched Cathe on some weights, not on others. Cannot do those planks with triceps kickbacks with decent form, so I'm just going to do them on my knees, which was something she showed in another workout.

I will do premix 6 or 7 tomorrow on Legs. 80 min. is too long for me.

Joan, I don't see a premix 16 for Bis and Tris (?). What exercise hurts your ankles? I haven't counted calories in so long I admire your perseverance. I just do portion size control and stay away from desserts (most of the time, anyway!).

Deb, so far I haven't had any trouble with the tubing exercises (I have the blue one which is medium resistance.), but I haven't done the Burn Sets discs yet.

Lori, I would have liked Hard Strikes to be a bit longer, too, but it's a good length with the conditioning work, so I will continue to do the whole thing. Sounds like a plan on the punching bag. Boxing workouts with a heavy bag are supposed to be great for building strength, but I already have so much equipment (I just bought two more sets of risers for the Burn Sets workouts), I wouldn't know where to put the bag. Let us know how the 80 min. leg workout is (doms anyone?).

I'm sure Puss will be happy to get that cone off. Max was fine with it, but I'm sure a cat would find it humiliating.

Hi to Josie and her Insanity!

Hi Ladies,

The workouts are going well, I had to modify a few of the jumps on today’s Cardio Power and Resistance DVD.

It is back to normal at work. The same annoying and loud people are back, but we at least have a new director that started on Monday. I hope that she is strong and castrates a couple of the good old boys ;) I know I’m evil!!

Garance, I do have DOMS ;) But it feels good.

Josie

The premix was in the boxing dvd Hard strikes. My session at the gym was for bi's and tri's. I was trying to do 2 days at once. I should be really busy in the office today and didn't want to fall behind.

I am so annoyed with congress-what else is new. I won't be able to file ANY tax return before 1/30/13 and some not until the end of Feb. or middle of March. My software will be up to date long before that so I hope everyone comes in earlier so all I have to do is send the finished return when the IRS is ready.

Garance You're not trying to lose weight are you? I do pretty good eating to stay the same without counting calories it's the cutting them that is hard for me without MFP.

I haven't done hard strikes yet. we actually have a punching bag. one that hangs from a high platform. we've had it for years, used it a lot at first. the trouble was that it won't hold air. I'm sure I returned it for a replacement once or twice because none did. you needed to refill it daily to have it firm enough to use. finally, the place we bought it from went out of business so it still hanging there, airless. works fine but to air it up you need to take it down and either use a hand pump or a pressurizer and eventually we quit doing it. just a thought if you consider buying one. maybe we didn't spend enough?

I don't count calories either. as long as I wake up hungry at night, I'm holding OK. if I'm not hungry, I'm gaining. no skipped meals. no desserts, at least no full size ones. I'll have 1 TB of ice cream for example. no restaurant food, period. low fat, most things except for real vinaigrette salad dressing. non fat milk. Mostly, I have to be hungry almost all the time or I'm unable to lose, and it will come back in a heart beat if I relax a little. I remember when eating fish once a week ( weight watchers) was enough to lose. Haa. good old days.

cats are normally so quiet, and this cone makes such a racket. I will be SO glad to take it off him.

Hi ladies!

Today was Legs and rear delts. I liked Legs but you all know how I feel about Butts & Guts. I think I may alternate these two every week so I can fit it. Legs and delts is to long for me to do all at one. I do not have that much time in the morning like I had today and will need to break this up into 2 next time. Would like to hear everyone's opinion on this workout.

Valerie...hope puss is feeling better soon. He will love it when the cone comes off.

Thursday

Hi,

Going out for breakfast, then taking the dogs to the vet for regular check up stuff, and to get Kylee micro-chipped.

I will check back in a little later...

did hard strikes yesterday.. Fun! I used cathe weighted gloves which work Ok if you strap them on really tight so they don't flop a lot. kind of like KPC on speed!

the muscle condiditoning after was nasty. I could not do side planks and lift a weight to save my life. fell over forward, fell over backward, will need to do that one separately to see what the problem is. did most on my side but not in a collapsed plank.
I'm glad sit ups are back. I always liked those better than crunches, and I like the frantic combo of them with pushups. I can't keep up on speed but will keep plugging at it. I go as long as they go, but must be behind at least a set by the end. I can't watch the TV so lose count.

what we have is a speed bag..... DH got good at it, I had trouble with the rhythm and constantly had to stop the bag and restart. it was fun to use but like I said, kept deflating. it is a great arm workout but reinflating it every day got tedious.

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did premix 6 on Legs (48:33). This is barre (used my tower), ball, chair (used my little step with 6 risers) and floorwork (used ankle weights instead of a dumbbell for the final move). I like this premix, although it will definitely take some practice to get all of these moves done correctly. It reminds me a great deal of Brazil Butt Lift which I was doing for awhile.

Don't feel bad on those side planks, Valerie. I use a 5 lb. weight but will probably use a 3 lb. next time because I tip forward, too. I also don't have my feet stacked; instead one foot is slightly forward in front of the other, toe down. This seems to give me better balance.

Watched the Oscar nominations this morning. I really don't get why Beasts of the Southern Wild is a Best Picture nominee, plus best actress and best director. I really felt like I was watching poor white trash drinking themselves into oblivion most of the time, with intermittent pretentious claptrap about saving the planet, dream sequences involving ancient aurochs, now extinct, and a little girl who misses her dead mother and is living with a dying father who drinks too much. Made. No. Sense.

Joan, I share your sentiments on our dysfunctional Congress. On Hard Strikes, eliminate the impact and just do half-jacks. Maybe that will help your ankles. You're right--I'm not trying to lose weight, just maintain. It seems like I must cut back a little every year, though, in order to do so.

Josie, hope your new manager has her scalpel out!

Lori, I admire your stamina. I never bought B&G. How does it compare.

Hi,

Back after spending a fortune at the vet...I swear dogs cost more than kids. ( except for college of course!)

Today I did Hard Strikes premix 16 time saver no conditioning, which is what was called for in the rotation I am doing. It was ok...I modified a lot so not a huge calorie burn, but no problems with anything she did.

Valerie, I know what you mean about the inflating....the stability ball I have ( Cathe brand) is always soft and needs to be filled, which is a pain.

Joan, it's wise to be careful, no sense getting hurt and sidelined for weeks. DH is grumbling about all the new payroll stuff, too.

Garance, I don't know what it is about that tubing...maybe it's too short? I can't even get it in position, let alone do any reps. I am using a green one, which is even the one down from the blue one and still can't do anything...

Josie, mailed your DVD today, it should be there by Saturday. Let me know if you don't get it my Monday..

Good afternoon!

Did Bis and Tris this morning with Core #2 and really liked it. Will have to work up to some of the weights cathe uses but I am pleased with what I did.

Garance - Butts and Guts is similar to legs (no barre) but more weights. In Legs she uses more of your own body weight. Which is tough in itself and I liked the change but I just feel a little more worked with B&G. I really need to work my legs extra hard or they quickly lose their shape especially since turning 50. If I gain 5lbs it goes straight to my legs.

Valerie...me too on the planks. Very challenging to say the least. I fell forward a couple of times too!

Chat with you all tomorrow!

Well, it's comforting to know I wasn't the only one who failed side planks! I was so unsteady.... thought I'd gained a lot of core strength from mountain climber moves from LIS, but it didn't translate into stability for side planks. I quickly tossed the 8 lb, went to 5 and still toppled over. oh well. I felt pretty strong about everything else so that's reasonable. w
went to yoga this morning and for the first time I was able to rotate my hips outward into an external rotation. I will probably never do lotus because of my hip orientation, but this was a sign of progress. I really had to muscle into the position, yet for some people it's easy and natural.

Took the collar off puss but he didn't "appreciate" it. we thought he'd be leaping around joyously, like when you pick up your dog from a stay at the kennel. but no, he's a cat. what was I thinking. glad we're done with it. it was an expensive journey although this clinic charges a flat rate for the procedure itself, and I didn't have to pay for visits to add staples, remove staples, and a progress check. but yes, veterinary care is expensive compared to what it used to cost. but so many advances in treatment, so we are paying for advancing technology here just like in human medicine.

Deb ... about the tubing. I have one ( bought at a local store) but for me the handles are bulky and get in the way all the time, get caught on each other, etc. I don't remember what strength I bought but probably medium. If possible, I use a plain resistance band. I have 2 stability balls... have stayed firm for years. I think it's a matter of luck.

Lynda, I haven't looked at the oscar info but I heard bad things about "beasts" . I had it on my netflix queue, read a little more, and took it off. I took Les Mis off too, like the people in it but no fan of musicals.

I'm trying hard to lose weight. just saw our years pics and blech! nothing like photos to burst the bubble. I have big beefy legs that no exercise will touch, and pics in shorts are depressing. especially unflattering when I'm at the edge of the pic, because the TV screen ( where we view them) distorts things at the edges, making me look BIG. I know some is distortion because it happens in movies, TV ... people along the edges look like they gained 20 lbs between scenes. anyway, I eat so much less than I ever did, and seem to be stuck in place regardless of what I do.

Good morning!

A nice day off, went to Kohl's then for lunch with my cousin.

Lori, funny how we are all different with likes for DVD's etc. I sold B&G on Ebay, hated it, and mostly all of the workouts from that group. ( was that the "unnamed" serie?).

Valerie, with all the riding, hiking, etc that you do, I am sure your legs must be just musclular, while mine are FAT and FLABBY! I started to use MyFitnessPal right before Thanksgiving and have lost 10 pounds so far. It takes a few minutes every day to log in, but I think it keeps me accountable and most of the time, eating well. Yesterday was a disaster, with going out for 2 meals.

Garance, finished watching DA...great show. I did purchase the DVD on Ebay...it is released January 31st I think. I figure I can then watch it when I feel like it, and not worry about taping times etc. Until then I will tape though.

Of course, going out again for breakfast this morning....

will check back later...

muscular and big. my calves are not proportional. I wear pants because as soon as my calves are showing, I look way bigger than I am. they aren't fat, just massive. it is the first consideration for buying clothing or boots... will my legs fit. a good bit of the time, they don't. when I was about 12 yrs old and weighed 100 lbs they fairly suddenly got big. it used to be a topic of family conversation, with my aunts telling my mother it was "her fault" for "letting me wear those flat shoes all the time". and an uncle who took one look at me when I walked in the door after school and broke into gales of laughter, laughing so hard I thought he'd fall out of the chair, pointing at me and saying "Those legs!! those legs!!" I remember looking down at myself and wondering what was so funny. those kind of episodes continued. It is a painful topic, but it got me started exercising. never made a bit of difference on leg size. sometimes I think they have been the biggest force in my life.
I finally got on the scale again this morning and have lost 0.2 lbs. so no gain over the holidays but not much of a loss. I maintained. I hardly ever eat out and am very careful when I do.
congrats on your 10 lb loss! that is terrific anytime but especially considering this time of the year with all the extra goodies and food pushed at us constantly. what kind of program is myfitness pal?

Myfitnesspal is just a calorie counting program but it does have everything in it's data bank. Or at least I haven't found much that isn't it it. It tracks your favorites and the most recent items you have eaten so it is very easy to put in what you have eaten for the day.

Valerie for me it was my pot gut as they used to call it. The area under the waistline. Even at 102lb I couldn't fit in a lot of clothes because of that lump. Or I could but if it fit the waist and legs it was too tight around the abdomen. If it fit there it was baggy everywhere else. I think I gained weight because it didn't matter. I wouldn't look good in clothes anyway. This time if I get down there will be liposuction.

Joan, I think lipo in the abdomen is a pretty common and localized. I'd do it (maybe) if I had a problem there and was otherwise slim.
I'm optimistic 10 lbs less would look better because I'm pretty well muscled overall, especially considering age. also if I wear pants, my problem is hidden! one issue is that "older" people don't necessarily lose fat in the same places we did when we were young or even middle aged, just like when we gain it doesn't always go where it used to either.
I'll take a look at that site and see if it would work for me, but I don't think my calorie count can drop much more. I've considered weight watchers just for added support.

I did yoga yesterday, and later 2 miles on the treadmill.

Happy Friday Ladies,

Today’s workout was pure cardio. I had to modify 2 of the exercises on the DVD, but so far so good. Tomorrow will be day 6 and I will be doing the plyometric cardio circuit DVD and then rest on Sunday. I may take a yoga class on Sunday, but don’t know yet.

I got my spinning bike yesterday :). Can’t wait to start using it!

My DH and I will be going out to dinner tonight and maybe a movie.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Valerie, and Lori--

I did the All Out Low Impact Hiit premix 1 (49 min.). I had a lot of doms from the leg workout yesterday, which surprised me. Either it's because I haven't been doing many workouts lately that target the legs, or these particular exercises really got to me. One week done on the 3 month Undulating Rotation!

Valerie, the way you describe your legs makes me think of Brenda in the workouts. She has very "block-like" legs too--very muscular with large calves. Hey, as long as they get you where you want to go, you shouldn't feel bad. Have you tried "Not Your Daughter's Jeans"? I saw a thread on Videofitness about jeans and thought of you. Apparently there's a website--6pm.com--where you can find them at a discounted price. Are cats ever grateful?

Deb, good for you on the weight loss! Glad to hear you are relaxing for a few days.

Lori, I think I will stay away from B & G if it's so tough. I am not a big fan of leg workouts, and felt really sore today from the premix I did yesterday. I had forgotten how effective barre workouts are, which I did a lot last year during the first 6 mos., then stopped because of a knee injury.

Josie, dh and I are going out to dinner on Sunday, and I will probably go to see the Hitchcock film one afternoon. I like my matinees.

Hi to Joan!

Good morning ladies!

Decided to take yesterday off. Went out with the girls last night so I wanted to sleep in since I would be out late. We went out for dinner and a show. The show was "Spank" which is a parody of 50 Shades of Grey. It was hysterical! Went with 8 girls from the office and we had so many laughs!

Speaking of the girls from the office I celebrated my 20 years with my company yesterday and they gave me a punching bag and gloves along with a heart rate monitor for my gift! I work with such a great group. Love them.

Valerie, that is so sad that you had to deal with people ridiculing your legs in that way. I can see how you would become self conscious about them. I have very thick legs too. Garance, funny you should mention Brenda. I like to think I am like her. If you go back to earlier workouts you can see how she has leaned her legs thru the years and looks great. She has been an inspiration to me. I am now at a point in my life where I have accepted my stocky legs and try and focus on the things I like about myself. This was not easy for me to do but I have managed it and felt like an incredible weight was lifted from me once I got here.

I'll be doing all out HIIT this morning since I relaxed yesterday! Going to take chester for our long walk at some point then my son and I will head over to home depot to buy sand for my punching bag. I am actually really excited to try it out. Going to do the heavy bag tabatas from Hardstrikes later. Wish me luck!!

Have a great day!

Good morning!

Love that it is the weekend...especially when there are no committments or anywhere to be. My friend and I spent 4 hours at breakfast yesterday.. just catching up..

Valerie, well you did a good job not gaining over the hardest time of the year for eating. As for legs, I think barre work would be something that you could try..especially since you do so much other stuff that would build the muscles, like riding, hiking. etc.

Josie, I hope your DVD gets there today!

Joan, I agree with Valerie, go for it if it comes to that. I think MFP is the best that is out there, and free too!

Garance, I did the All Out Low Impact yesterday too, only a shorter premix. How is Max? It sounds like it wasn't a torn ACL?

Lori, what a great bunch of co-workers! Nice gift. I celebrated 40 years in December, and we get to pick out a gift from the company from a catalog. I got a amathyst/diamond ring. There reallly wasn't much that I wanted. But no other celebration...

Not sure what is on tap for today, DH has a fly fishing demo thing he is going to this afternoon....I may visit my cousin, or nap! Decisions, decisions....

Deb what a nice visit with your friend.

Friday was my rest day. Will have to look at the schedule. I am going to have to really revise the 90 day rotation. It seems like I will end up with 2 upper body in the first half of the week and 2 lower body in the last half if I don't adjust it. I think I will have the Friday low impact hiit today and the 80 minute leg tomorrow.

Steps are way down since I'm now chained to the desk instead of babysitting.
