Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/17

Judy, I missed there not being another spin workout in ICE. I used to drink WAY more coffee. DH had to cut way back when he started getting more migraines, and I went along with him. we cut back gradually. we stayed at almost no caffeine for years but I missed it. I feel better with a morning coffee, so I added a strong early morning cup. If I have any later, it's mostly or all decaf. except, if we are hiking I might get a double shot. they are small and travel well and you have no reason not to drink the whole thing! on a hike, I burn it off. I sleep better if I don't overdo caffeine.
My BIL and SIL are both veterinary assistants and have had very good, well paying, responsible jobs in a 24 hour emergency vet clinic. they deal 100% with small animals, no horses, cows etc. BIL is more or less retired now, but SIL still works part time.

so maybe we should call ourselves the Densities?

I get nervous because my mother had breast cancer, diagnosed at 73. she did fine. had a lumpectomy, no chemo. had some issues with tamoxifen. I want to dodge that bullet if possible. Lori hope your friend does well. and Madeline too. so nice of you to go visit.

We thought about another ride today but it's pretty gray and wet. will do something outdoors if it doesn't rain.
ETA Lynda, we posted at the same time. Thank you for your usual thorough review. yes, I know a little about the Glass history but I will review before I see this. I thought we'd go next week for cousin's birthday, but it now sounds like he only wants to go out for lunch. Not sure if that will change by next week, can't tell with him. he gets sick so often with upper respiratory issues, and is just getting over one. It sounds like a movie best seen on a big screen.

Hi Ladies,

I ran yesterday and worked out with Karina and today I went spinning. No dense breasts here, I barely have breasts, but they did their job while my kids were babies. I breast fed both of them ;)

Lori, glad that Madeline is doing better and that you get to see her soon.

Garance, thank you for the review. We might go see it today.

Deb, it's nice that you got the car incident resolved so fast. My DD's took forever.

Judy, the classes sound interesting. Hope that you can find a job when you are finished.

Valerie, glad that your DH is doing better. He is probably very happy that he can get out of the house.

Josie

Good evening ladies!

This morning I did Cathe Live Ice Total Body Compound in place of Ice Metabolic one called for in the rotation. I like this one and it flies by. We had a heavy package day today so that was our lunch time workout. :) I think I messed up and started doing week 4 of the Ice rotation and missed a week somewhere. So next week I'll just repeat week 4 so I can say I did a 4 week rotation!

Lynda...thank you so much for your detailed review. I let my DH read it and now we need to go see it. If the weather is not as bad as predicted we'll go Sunday. Still enjoying The Passage. I have my dear friend who is on my Kindle account reading it also. We usually read the same books which we love discussing!

Judy...I agree with a MM for legs. She commented on why there is none for legs but I can't remember the reasoning. I think it is so great that you are talking those classes. Are they online? How did you hear of them? Just curious how someone would go about taking these classes. I may recommend something similar to a friend of mine. Speaking of Apple I am loving my watch! I bought a new heart rate monitor that has bluetooth and I sync with Endomondo. They have an apple watch app so all is working well.

Deb...thanks for mentioning Acorn. I was going to look into this and completely forgot. Hope all went well with Ins agent today.

Valerie...I have not used my spin bike in a while. I really should hop on it. I too used to drink way too much coffee. I currently have about 2 cups in the morning equivalent to two medium cups of coffee from either a dunkin or starbucks and then usually a small cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon. And this is less than what I used to drink years ago. I never have coffee after 4pm. If I do then I do not sleep at all. My friend will have a lumpectomy and then radiation. She will also be on tamoxifen for I believe 5 years. I know she will do fine like your mom.

Josie... I remember your daughters car taking forever! Great workouts. Has it been a year now that you have been working out with Katrina?

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

Judy, what is the difference between a iPhone 6S and a 6+? John has the 6...but not the "plus"...Thanks for the links, very interesting. I think going to the vets offices and scoping out the assistant's jobs is a great idea.

Speaking of iPhones, if you have downloaded the upgrade to 9.1. check out your settings and turn off the feature that is called "Wifi Assist". It was part of the 9.1 upgrade ( unbeknown to the user). and it constantly looks for a better internet connection, even when you are in a free spot, (like your house!)....racks up the sue of data service, and you are not aware when it is happening.

Lynda, great review! I am now convinced it would not be something I would want to see. I absolutely love coffee, it's my only vice, ( not counting any food loves)...that I will never give up. I have problems stopping it, but it is ok if I do it gradually.

Valerie, "so maybe we should call ourselves the Densities?".....:). That would raise some eyebrows when people looked at the Check-In forum titles....:).

Josie, good workouts! Do you spin at the gym? I still haven't tried John's new bike...

Lori, what HRM did you buy? Glad your friend has a good prognosis. I am still searching around Acorn to see if it is worth keeping. It is definitely worth it if you like British TV. We mix the beans we use for coffee to a 50/50 mix so I can drink more...:) I stop drinking it by around noon or like you, I won't be able to sleep.

Picking up the car this morning, and I really need to do some grooming on the dogs....

Stay warm!

Good Morning Everyone,

Deb-Thanks for the tip! I just turned the Wifi Assist off on DH's new phone. I had it off on mine but it was on by default on his new phone. He got the regular 6S, not the +. It looks like the main difference between the 6 and 6s is that the 6s has a better camera with more features and it has "3D Touch". I will wait for the 7 to come out before I think about upgrading. I like that we can go to the Apple store and switch phones. I prefer that to going to a Verizon store.

Lori-I'm glad you love your watch! I picked up a spare charging cable for mine last night. I thought it might be a good idea to have another one for traveling.

Lynda-I need to look into Acorn. It sounds like it might be something I would like. I get bad headaches whenever I go too long without caffeine so I know it will be challenging for me to eliminate it too. Thanks for the detailed review. DH and I might have to see this one.

Valerie-That's good to know that your BIL and SIL have had success being veterinary assistants. There are a couple of e-vets nearby, so that is something else I can look into.

Josie-Great job with your training! I bought a pair of Brooks Adrenalines with a gift card that I got for Christmas. I hope to start running again this spring. In the mean time I may do a little treadmill running at the gym.

Have a great day!

Judy

I did a spin yesterday the Ride one from X-train, 60 minutes. did my standard therapy later in the day for another 20 minutes. spinning gets my heart rate up without any impact although I find I need to take an occasional posture break.

went to Lowes and picked up plywood, hardware to build a new cold frame. our old one lasted 20+ years but finally disintegrated. we build it in pieces in the basement and take it outside to assemble in spring. and now the blasted hot tub stopped working. we've been nursing it along the last couple years replacing one part at a time, but the last 2 second power out seems to have done it in. Looks DOA. we are going to have a spa repair person take a look but will not be spending a whole lot to fix it again.

I'm still wanting an iphone but DH is being dead weight on this one.

Off to the dentist for cleaning.
Back from the dentist. all OK.

Deb it will be good to get the new car and start to place the accident in the past. I love coffee flavor, coffee itself, mocha flavor, actually anything coffee flavored. Love the smell. I guess it's a vice in a way. not a fan of tea though I try to convince myself I like it sometimes.

Lori, I think my mother had a short course of radiation too, forgot about that. she is a VERY sedentary person, sits, sits, and sits some more. ended up with a DVT in her leg possibly related to the tamoxifen. coumadin for several months. I'm not sure how much tamoxifen ups the risk, but it's something to ask about. Cancer treatment is evolving so fast...
My old HRM 's work pretty well with the spin bike... really does crank up the heart rate.

I think we will go ahead on re- carpeting. one contractor came this morning and will give us a bid. it's

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Metabolic (47:53).

Lori, glad you and your friend are enjoying The Passage. And you won't have to wait for The Twelve as I did. Dh finally finished putting together the last piece on my office this morning. I had to send back things and I don't know how I would have been able to do it if he hadn't been so good about repackaging things. Looks like that storm named Jonas will miss us completely, or am I tempting fate by saying that?

Judy, thanks for those links. I hope you can find a job as vet assistant. It looks like such a rewarding job.

Deb, I associate the word 'dense' with being stupid, thick in the head. I don't know--there is a lot of English stuff with Prime as well, so Acorn might be redundant.

Valerie, isn't something always going to wrack and ruin? I am currently trying to decide whether to have a couple chairs reupholstered because the sun in our addition has faded them so much. Sounds like you have a new diy project--the cold frame.

Hi to Josie!

Good evening ladies!

Today was going to be a rest day but my DH was working a little late so I could not resist and wanted to do Cathe's live class from today...Ice Chiseled Upper & Lower Body Blast. I liked it alot. Was a fun workout and flew by. I was able to go heavier than what she used in most of the weights.

Judy...thanks for the links. I will be sure to pass them along. I may buy another charger for the watch too. So far though the battery life has been fine for me. After I workout in the morning I place it on the charger while getting ready for work. Lasts all day until I go to bed.

Deb...I have the Polar HT40 watch and sensor that I have had since 2012. Hardly ever used it. Never remembered to put the strap on and the watch always felt bulky. But now since I have an apple watch I am into monitoring my heart rate and calories so now all of a sudden I remember to put the strap and sensor on. Go figure! I bought the Polar HR7 sensor and strap to sync with my watch. Used a gift card my DH had given me for xmas. Yeah on your new car!

Valerie...For some reason I thought you had an Iphone. What is a cold frame? That stinks about your hot tub. My inlaws had such trouble with theirs they finally just got rid of it. My friend has her surgery on 2/8. She just wants it over and done with.

Lynda...yes very glad the storm will pass us. Just in case I went to home depot today and picked up everything I need to change out the faucet and paint the kitchen. So if the storm happens to change I will have plenty to do! So glad your office os complete. You must be thrilled! I hear you on repackaging things. I can never fit things back in their original packages.

Hi to Josie!

Lori a cold frame is a big outdoor box with a clear lid you put outside to acclimate small plants to outdoor conditions. we grow a lot of our own plant "starts" for cool weather crops, like broccoli and cabbage. they will suffer going direct from warm comfy indoors to outdoors. the coldframe is an "intermediate place" to let them acclimate. on a warm day we open the lid, on a cold night, we shut it down. a side benefit is we have lots of salamanders that over winter inside. they are cute but shy and over winter in there too. we build one with plywood, 2x2's and a fiberglass lid. costs less than $100. will last many years.

Our hot tub has been an on and off thing for years. does not seem that complicated but has been a total PITA to keep it running. very hard to find a knowledgeable person to assess what is wrong. we are about of patience. had a brief power out and it won't restart.

think we will go ahead and re-carpet. going to look at carpet tomorrow. decent bid from the guy we've worked with before. hard surfaces are more expensive, and this is 90% stairways/ bedrooms so think we will do the less expensive option.

The Killing is sure dragging out. feeling more like Lost by the minute. I don't like it when I feel like they are padding to make an extra season. Feels like extra 2 seasons!

Inly had time for my therapy and a section of LBB. suddenly today it felt like my knee was tracking better and I could bend it without pain or tape.

Good morning & Happy Friday!

I still like Fridays, even though it really doesn't matter like it used to. The big storm of the Eastern seaboard is passing us by....YAY! They get 2 inches in DC and will be shutting the whole place down.

Judy, sometimes I wish I would have gotten an Apple phone, but then, mine is so simple, not a lot of stuff to learn about etc. If you do decide to get Acorn, try starting A Place to Call Home. The first 2 seasons are on Prime, then you would have to use Acorn for season 3. Also Doc Martin, but that is 7 seasons, ( they are only 8 episodes each, not like the old US ones that are 24!).

Valerie, it sounds like your knee has made a turning point! nice DYI project! Do you use your hot tub frequently? I only watched the first 2 seasons of The Killing, had to see the end of that first crime etc. Not sure if seasons 3 & 4 are on Prime...I don't think they are free there, that must be why I stopped watching. I like the main characters, especially the guy...wow, I would like to see how he is in real life.

Lynda, John has that same "talent"...able to repack things for returning...I get so frustrated when there are all kinds of pieces of Styrofoam etc. Did you contact the customer service people of the company and let them know what happened?

Lori, that Live combined ICE workout sounds great! I had a Polar HR7 at one time, probably still have the parts...I use the hard solid chest strap from my original Polar, and the watch from my FT4 and they work beautifully together. I heard that the FitBit's do not measure HR too reliably.

Hi Josie!

A workout, then staying in and doing some de-cluttering/organizing around here. It's never ending...

Stay warm!

Deb, I'm cautiously optimistic about the knee issue. Most things don't bother me at all. somehow I was not using the muscles in my right leg right, and the less I used them right, the more likely I'd use them improperly and so the "improper" way got stronger.... or something like that. It helps to do glute and hamstring moves so I get more aware of contracting those muscles right.
we didn't use our hot tub that often. went in spurts, sometimes a couple times in a week, and then not at all for several weeks. it feels good after a hike or a ride, but when it's raining out, it's no fun. I doubt we'll replace it.
The Killing..... We saw the first season before this is only the second season and it is really dragging out with people doing stupid non rational things I always compare it to Lost. Just when it looks like the plot is moving forward, some goofy manipulation occurs and it goes off on another weird tangent. I liked this at first but it's getting tedious. can't imagine what will make up 2 more seasons.

Ha Lori, I talked about getting an iphone but DH and I share a phone and so it's a joint decision and he keeps blaming me for the phone not working well. I think we will reduce our costs plus get a phone that works better. It's almost like I'm a negative energy field...when I pick up the phone it stops working. I touch or swipe the screen and nothing happens..... keeps ringing or stays on the home page. I get so frustrated ..I can't put it in or out of my purse without touching some button and turning something on when I don't want to. I've had it for years and if it were me alone , I'd have exchanged it ages ago. but we put the contract in his name. so gotta have agreement. I should add that it doesn't work very well for him either!
more later...

Hi Everyone--

This morning I did Bootcamp (approx. 45:00).

I am just plain thrilled that this storm is not hitting us. Thanks to the meterological gods wherever you dwell!!

Valerie, maybe you should each have your own phone. One less irritant for the two of you. Sounds like the knee is doing so much better.

Deb, I spent a lot of time with customer service at Ballard. They were excellent--even answering the phone on weekends and very long hours. I had 3 pieces to return, and one of them was a very odd shape. It was a console for a computer monitor shaped to fit into a corner desk. No way it would work with my Thunderbolt. I would have been craning my neck and miserable trying to use that. I had to exchange one of the credenza tops because I sent back one credenza--too much space. I still have 3 more episodes of A Place to Call Home.

Lori, if I was housebound, I would probably be doing some sewing or knitting. Working on a big afghan at the moment that has a fan pattern with thick and thin yarn and 8 different colors. Going pleasurably fast too on size 15 needles. Also trying to finish a Marcy Tilton pattern for a skirt. Her patterns are so unconventional that I am drawn to them just because they look so one-of-a-kind. But they are also occasionally hard to figure out because the pieces are odd shapes. Fun when everything falls into place.

Hi to Judy and Josie!

I may go see either The Big Short or Brooklyn this weekend.

Good evening ladies!

Ok..so today was my rest day!

Valerie...thanks for explaining the cold box. Lol! About the Iphone. I really thought you bought one but now remember you were talking about it. That was a while ago and I assumed you bought it. Sounds like you guys should just do it!!! As I mentioned about my inlaws hot tub. Just became not worth keeping it up. Have fun looking at carpet. I love whenever we have new carpet installed.

Deb...I also heard that about the fit bit. The HR7 sensor is bluetooth and syncs well with the apple watch and I feel it is pretty accurate. Well you know I love Friday's!!!! My company has restaurants in the areas being hit hard with snow and they are just not used to this weather.

Lynda...I wish I knew how to knit. My mom tried teaching me but I never stuck with it. I have a beautiful afghan she made me in the mid 80's that I still love and treasure and use frequently when I want to get comfy on the couch. I also have some beautiful wool sweaters she made for herself that I kept after she passed. I will never part with them. Oh well..after growing up with 4 brothers and no sisters...home improvement is my thing! My DH wants to see The Big Short. As usual I know nothing about it. Awesome the storm is missing us. Happy dance!!!

I am all set to paint the kitchen tomorrow. Then on Sunday my plan is to replace the kitchen faucet in the morning and Pats game in the afternoon.

Hi to Josie and Judy!

Good morning & Happy Weekend!

Well we are dodging the storm, and I am really happy about that. Yes, thanking those Gods...:). I like being inside and watching it come down, but you have to go out eventually..LOL

Valerie, season 3 of The Killing takes place about a year and a half later, after they solve the murder that is in Seasons 1 & 2. It's a different crime story all together I believe. I will have to wait for them to be free on Prime. Something to look forward to. I agree with Lynda, you should probably get separate phones. I don't know how it would be to share one. My grandfather had a cold box in our yard where he started his vegetable plants....I forgot all about that until you mentioned it. I think he used a door frame and glass to cover it. Not fancy at all but it worked. You are making me want to replace the carpet on our stairs to the second floor/landing. I need to do more woodwork stripping first. Another good project for the list.

Lynda, well at least you had good customer service from the office furniture company...that sometimes is the downfall of purchasing from the internet...no store to bring the stuff back to and see an actual person...it seems like they really wanted to help you. Size 15 needles? Wow...those are huge. Would love to see that skirt pattern. Is there a link to it somewhere?

Lori, Happy Dancing right with you. You are amazing with your home improvement skills! My niece bought a house with a hot tub that she was all excited about....now she sees it as an electricity hog. LOL...:).

Hi to Judy & Josie,

Agility class this morning, then going to see the play "Over the Rainbow" later this afternoon...

Take care,

good morning... we are starting painting the upstairs today. after it's done, we can carpet. we looked yesterday, ordered a couple larger squares but are pretty close to what we want. Essentially "builder beige" in a small, subtle pin dot pattern. Amazing the names they come up with for colors. can't wait to kiss the dusty rose carpet goodbye.

Did TTM again yesterday along with therapy work. a generous hour. I'm interspersing therapy moves into TTM so it flows better by pausing and inserting them. I'm getting those side planks ... jam my feet against the weight bench. prevents me from toppling over. will keep at it...I move my hips up and down well when my foot position is stabile. may try against a wall to help balance.

we had 2 phones for a while while DH was still working . he's not good at charging it and bringing it with him. he's not "bonded" to a phone like so many are now. I usually carry a shoulder bag or pack, so by default, get the phone, and I don't want to haul two phones. We still have a land line. I will NOT give that up. we use it WAY more than the cell. for us, two phones is a waste of money. I absolutely want an iphone 6.

Deb, we finished the second season of the killing last night. yes, they wrap it up quickly. I think we will watch the rest of it, available on Netflix streaming. we haven't used Netflix long so I don't know how long they keep things available. if it builds on some of the same characters, it's best not to wait too long. started watching the second season of Last Tango in Halifax.
I used to knit like crazy but I developed some pinkie finger distortion from the way I held the yarn. when I saw my finger get crooked, I quit cold turkey. now the pinkie finger on the other hand has gotten a bend to it too, so it wasn't related to knitting as I was told. used to crochet a lot also but the same issue. I kept all the 'gear" but haven't done it in decades.

Going to see Revenant on Monday with cousin for his birthday.

Deb, have her check the tub to see if it has an economy mode. ours uses less when we keep it there

Hi everyone--
This morning was Housemax and watching the misery of the storm on MSNBC every now and then while cleaning.

Deb, yes 15s make the afghan move right along. The pattern is this one:

Lori, I didn't start knitting until I was in my 30s and wanted to knit sweaters for my boys. Given how talented you are, I'm sure you could find a video that would start you easily.

Finally finished watching season 3 of A Place to Call Home. Wow! Now I can't wait for season 4. I think I might keep Acorn.
