Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 1/13

Good morning,

I just finished X-Train Bi's & Tri's. Good workout. So we are over the Wednesday hump, what is Thursday called? No snow here, in the so called "snow belt of the Northeast"...:)

Valerie, when I put my food in MFP, it is always what it is dry...so 1/2 cup of oatmeal is what you are making, ( doesn't matter that it ends up being a cup when cooked), you enter the 1/3 cup. Here is what I made as a "meal" that I repeat often:

Free Calorie Counter, Diet & Exercise Journal | MyFitnessPal.com

Garance, I felt the same for Edith in DA...maybe Lady Violet was right! Let him go! Sending good vibes for Max and his x-rays today..

Josie, good for you on the retirement decision! I want to, as well, but something is holding me back...it's such a big decision...plus I have 2 years before I will be able to collect Social security, ( if we even can get it at 62 in the future)...so that is a concern.

Lori, sometimes you just have to kick back and relax with a glass of wine ( or in my case a cup of hot chocolate!)
Off for coffee, and to get ready for another day of fun!

A lovely sunny day yesterday, warm in the sun, cold otherwise. went to a state park on saltwater. wed was quiet until lunch, had most of to ourselves. saw all kinds of ducks, harlequins are so gorgeous. loons. oystercatchers, guillemots. lots more. seals, and dolphins. little birds too like kinglets. Can you tell I'm a birdwatcher?

we got in several miles of walking, not a true 'workout" but enough. we are also looking for places we can kayak. it comes next week. this is one spot. protected salt water that isn't confusing. safe and lots of interesting things to see.

Deb, i'll look later but your diary is protected. sometimes I get frustrated and drop things too quickly. didn't type of the recipe yet, also later today.

my neighbor( good friend) is heading to tucson on emergency trip. her DH has been down there since before christmas and got either the flu or food poisoning and got very sick. she was debating whether to go down there but he seemed to be better and then realized he wasn't peeing. he's in kidney failure, but is in the hospital and hopefully on the mend. he has other health issues but this came up very suddenly. we are more fragile than we realize sometimes.

Hi Deb, Josie, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did Hard Strikes with the conditioning (46:37).

Max has a partially torn ACL, which makes the decision of what to do next rather difficult. If we do nothing, the vet thought he should be on glucosamine and an anti-inflammatory to protect the joint from becoming arthritic. Then there's two different possibilities for an operation--one involving some kind of net made of fishing wire that would tighten the joint for about 1200 dollars, and another more complicated surgery for 2500 dollars. Apparently there's also PT involving hydrotherapy and learning something compensatory about joint movement. We will definitely be consulting my veterinarian friend before making a final decision on this.

Good for you, Josie! I'm sure you will enjoy not having your crazy co-workers yammering on and on about their personal lives.

Deb, I wouldn't worry about Social Security. It's supposed to be fully funded, as is, until 2036. I decided to wait until age 70 to start collecting in order to maximize my benefit. Medicare, though, is the problem. And it's really not free as it is. I read an article in my AARP Bulletin recently that said a retired couple with Medicare would still end up paying about 250,000 dollars for medical care in retirement because of drugs, deductibles for hospital care, operations, and, of course the annual charge for Medicare Part B--which just went up.

Lori, we also had about 4 inches of snow yesterday, and I think it's staying because we are about to get hammered with an Arctic blast tomorrow. I have some doms again from the barre, ball, chair, and floorwork in Legs (premix 6). Especially my outer thighs and hips.

Good Shepherd's Pie
2 cups leftover mashed potatoes
paprika

1 onion chopped big
1 TB oil
1 lb broccoli
1 green pepper diced
4 medium carrots diced
1/2 tsp basil
1 bay leaf
3/4 cups chopped tomatoes or 1/4 cup tomato paste and 1/2 cup water

1 bunch spinach or swiss chard sliced thin
1 tsp salt.

preheat oven to 350

Cut broccoli into florets and stems. slice stems into 1/4 inch rounds.
saute onion in oil. add broccoli, green pepper, carrots, basil and bay leaf. Add tomatoes. bring to a boil, cover, simmer for about 15 min until vegies are tender.
stir in spinach and salt.

pour vegies into 9x13 pan . spread potatoes over top. sprinkle with paprika.
bake until hot, about 15 minutes. Serves 4-6.

note:I use broccolini which is smaller and more like home grown than grocery store broccoli, with stems like tree trunks. I microwave it separately so it's not over done. I ldon't want it mushy. packet of instant potatoes works too.
I love this dish. the vegies are quite flexible. red peppers are good too. it's quite low calorie if you don't load the potatoes with fat.

Valerie 1 serving of quaker oats comes up 150 calories and that is 1/2c dry. Packaged foods are the easiest because they are set up for that package size.

Deb I decided not to yell at you on mfp but you don't seem to eat many veg. Because NS has them as unlimited I don't always post them. What about you?

Joan

At age 62 you only receive 75% of the amount you would receive at age 66(full retirement age) I'm thinking 1/2 of dh ss (he has always been at max. wages for ss) will be better than 100% of mine and if I take that at 62 it is only 70%. I don't think I will wait until 70 but will take at 66. Of course I also plan to keep working. I would hate to take ss and then have to pay some of it back because I made too much.

Valerie -I am sorry to hear about your neighbor. Hope all is ok with him and he is on his way to recovery. Crazy how things can turn on a dime. You just never know. Thanks for the shepards pie recipe. It looks delicious and I look forward to making it.

Garance - this morning I woke up and my body told me this is a rest day. I am sure the wine the night before had something to do with it. I never have wine during the week. I have my second wind so I am planning to go home after work and bumping it out along with the heavy bag bonus. I think tomorrow will be my rest day and do All Out Hiit on Saturday. This seems to work with my schedule. Good for you always doing the conditioning after Hardstrikes. That makes a really good workout. I am so sorry to hear about Max. :(

Unbelieveble with how SS and Medicare is. I have a ways to go for retirement and in 2036 I'll be 75. I am assuming I will be retired by then and I guess I need to start planning now because at 75 I guess I will not be receiving any ss checks.

Chat with you all tomorrow!

Back to finish my posting. hope you enjoy the shepherds pie. It's a basic vegetarian recipe that I've made for decades. we grow a lot of broccoli and it's always good in this. no fancy ingredients and fairly fast if you chop fast. sometimes I make the potatoes, sometimes I use the envelopes. depends. I go light on any fat, and use non fat milk but you can adjust to your tastes.

I took another swing at MFP. it won't work for me. I cook almost everything from basic ingredients. there's no way I can enter all that data. thanks for trying to help but I'm leaning toward weight watchers (if I don't get some results soon) because the points system sounds like something easier to track. most fruit and vegies are 'free" on WW so you don't need to record them.

yoga this mornign and whatever I decide to do today in a few minutes. .

We decided to start my SS at 62. I'm in process of signing up for medicare which (here) requires an advantage plan. I'll be 65 in march. I'm getting a packet of info from a private company that advises and manages medicare advantage plans. it's free, and they guide your choices, check which plan will work best for you, and whether your doctors accept the plan you are choosing. it really is confusing. I don't need a lot at this time but who knows what the future holds. I plan to stay with the doctors I'm familiar with, don't want to switch to an HMO.

Lori, I am good friends with these neighbors. he has a lot of health problems and didn't need this issue. Now he and his wife( who just flew down this morning) will have to drive back here assuming he gets better. It's a long drive and they don't travel well together, whihc is why he was in AZ by himself to begin with.

Good morning!

Well it's FINALLY FRIDAY!!

I did X-Train Standing Legs this morning....that Cathe can sometimes be sadistic. We got a little bit of snow last night, not enough to worry about. Love this type of winter.

Valerie, sorry MFP didn't work out for you. I would think that even ith WW, if you want to track calories, you would have to enter all the ingredients of your dishes. I kind of eat simple things, not necessarily processed but plain food, so it's easy to log. Too bad about your neighbor/friend...I hope they get home safe and sound.

Garance, sorry to hear about Max..a tough decision that's for sure. But he is young, I would think the surgery would work well, and his other side should be good. Kelsey was 13 when she had the surgery. She was fine for 2 more years, the vet said her leg was better than a 2 year old's after that. The healing process will be the hard part for Max.

Joan, did you miss that I eat a romaine/spring mix salad every day and usually brocoli once a week? LOL...I know I need to eat more vegs...but hey, the salad counts right? I post everything I eat, even the bad stuff.

Josie, got the check, thanks

Lori, did you do the heavy bag workout when you got home yesterday?

Anyone have any plans for the weekend?

Deb, I made vegie soup for lunch yesterday. 1 TB olive oil, onion, carrots, 1 TB of broth concentrate, celery, mushrooms orzo, can of canellini beans, and kale. kind of typical of how I cook. about 8 cups of water. it will make 4 -6 servings. I am sure it's not "high calorie" but no clue how to enter it. I will add some green beans to it today to "volume it up". my understanding is that with WW most of the vegies would be 'free" and not count toward points used.
I don't think WW tracks calories per se. lot of food is "free", less "micromanagement" of ingredients. I can see how MFP could work ( glad it works for you) and I'm used to measure/weigh but not typing that much. I cook low fat not "no fat". those get weird. I even tried the Dean ornish diet at one time but could not stand the food with zero fat. tried panko breaded fish last night...baked cod with 5 gms of fat. DH called it fish sticks and pitched a fit. sigh. I thought they were good.

Did yoga yesterday am, LBB last night. I don't get doms from this one anymore.

good news on my neighbor, he's much better after getting IV fluids. will wait to see how his kidney function returns. it will be a long drive home for them.

that's a tough one on Max. my neighbors had ACL surgery on their german shepherd. but he's ridiculously misaligned and arthritic for a young dog, not a good comparison.

Good morning ladies!

Good news about your neighbor Valerie! Sound like all is going to be well.

Deb...yes I did Hardstrikes followed by tabata heavy bag. Love this workout. I feel like I have so much power.

This morning was to be a rest day but I woke up early and figured I'd just run on treadmill since I was up at my usual 4:30am. I have an IPAD and I stream Netfix and watch movies while on the treadmill. Right now I am watching the girl with the dragon tattoo (american version). The only way for me to finish it is by running (that's my rule). This way it is an incentive to run if I am watching a good movie! Tomorrow it will be All Out Hiit and a nice long dog walk.

I am loving the Xtrain series and so glad I decided to purchase it.

Have a great day ladies!

Hi Ladies,

I did cardio recovery in the morning and decided to do the sculpt class at the yoga studio.
I felt great this morning when I did cardio power and resistance. Tomorrow will be pure cardio and cardio abs plus a 3 mile run with my friend at 6:45 AM.

I will be going to San Diego to visit my son tomorrow, I have not see my youngest peanut in a while.

Valerie, I’m gland that your neighbor’s husband is doing better.

Garance, Astro had a torn ALC, but it was discovered a year before he died.
The Dr. said that it would serve no purpose to have the surgery. He was fine
walking and jumping and running on 3 legs once he got his balance ;).
I can still see him in the back yard :(

Have a nice weekend ladies!

Josie

Hi Deb, Josie, Joan, Valerie, and Lori--

This morning I did the All Out Low Impact HiiT premix 1 (49:22).

Deb, I'm planning on going to see Silver Linings Playbook this weekend. We are still not sure what we will do about Max, although he is taking glucosamine and an anti-inflammatory. The vet encouraged us to make up our minds about surgery within a couple months. It's really hard, because Max is so active.

There are a couple really tasty salads at epicurious.com. One of them is a kale salad with chopped dates and grated parmesan cheese. You can dress it ahead of time because the kale is so tough. The other one that I have been making a lot is baby spinach with sliced bosc pears, sliced almonds (instead of hazel nuts), and dried cranberries.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Did disk one again, chest, shoulders, bi's. I'm not efficient at this one. raised several weights, but not enough. somehow, a lot of "stuff" needs to be moved around in a small space adding time to the process. It's funny, I used to feel like toe push ups were a big challenge, but the matter-of-fact way they present in this series, I just get down and do them all. I have much better core strength over the last few months also. Lots of different weight sets out on the floor. I bought heavier resistance tubing at Target today for $10. much better. less bulky handles & much harder resistance. I'm fond of bands and tubing. I think you get more work at less risk for injury compared to dumbbells where if you go too heavy you can get yanked easily in the shoulders.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Good morning

Pretty windy here today and it's supposed to last until tomorrow night. I just hope we don't get snow because it would be a blizzard for sure.

Valerie, I guess tracking points is kind of like tracking calories right? You get a certain number of points per day if I remember right but it's been a while my friend has been on WW off and on for years. If you like band workouts you should try Travel Fit. It's pretty good and not too long.

Garance, it has to be hard to decide about Max. His young age would make it a no brainier but the healing process will be hard. I guess if he has to stay in the house for a few weeks and only out on leash to do his "business" that is what will have to be. Even people that have opted not to have it done are told to keep the quit for weeks so you would still have to do that part anyway. I would be worried about what not doing it would do to his leg in the future. Arthritis would set in early?

Josie, have a good trip and fun with the "peanut".

Lori I have a TV right near my treadmill but I hardly ever use it. I love the Cardio Coach workouts or the I-Train ones that you use with an iPod. I am liking this series too. It's the first time I have ever followed one of Cathe's rotations.

Agility class this morning and lots of HouseMax!

Will check in later to see who is around.

Good morning ladies!

Cold and windy here.

Valerie I love working out with bands. I too feel like I get such a great workout with them. I think garance mentioned Cathe's Travel Fit and yes I agree with her this is a great workout using a band. I have this on my ipad so when I travel for work I know I have this for a back up if there is no gym available. Easy to do right in your hotel room.

Last night when I got home my husband was working out on his recumbent bike so I picked up some weights and did 100 rep scarecrows and biceps. Love fitting these in when I have a few minutes.

Today will be All Out Hiit then walk Chester. Need to get all my errands done today to be ready for the Pats / Ravens game tomorrow! ;)

Hey Lori,

I also posted this over in the Download Forum....I have Travel Fit on my iPod, but now that I have an iPad, I would llike to have it on there...not sure how to do this now...can I also have it on the iPad and how do I get it there..?

I post on another forum where several are doing WW. you get daily points and extra weekly points to use at your discretion. points depend on your activity level, age, how much you need to lose etc. you have so many points per day, and as long as you stay in that limit you should lose. foods are assigned points, some obviously have high points, some none. so a dinner salad would be mostly 'free" foods except for dressing, avocados, nuts if you use them. I think fruit and vegies are unlimited except for a few that carry points, like corn, potatoes, avocado etc. I eat a lot of those unlimited things, so I think it would be easier than trying calculate everything in the vegie soup I made yesterday. or the shepherds pie. some points for the oil, canellini beans, mashed potatoes but not many. the broccoli, onion, carrot, is "free". I think for the way I eat it would be a lot less record keeping. I haven't joined but am considering it if I can't make any progress on my own.

we are stuck in a weird weather pattern with fog and freezing fog. quite cold for here. but so blasted foggy it's not pleasant doing anything. clear in the mountains but the snow is frozen into bricks of ice. too cold/icy to risk biking. we may try a low level hike with traction devices.

I'm the TV treadmill person. I can't tolerate devices in my ears so I watch "something" on TV unless I'm doing a cathe workout. I've heard enough about lance armstrong and cheating in general to last a lifetime.

Lori, thats a great way to sneak in a few extra minutes of exercise instead of wasting the time.
