Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 09/04/2022

Today I did Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice for 18 minutes. We are having a gray and rainy day which makes me want to curl up and read.

Hello to All and have a wonderful day.

we did our regular road ride this morning, about 24 miles. weather forecast turned out to be a little off, and we had a heck of a headwind starting out and in several sections of the ride, but still ended up in a good total time of 2 hrs 8 minutes . the headwind slows the pace down, but then when in the opposite direction it speeds you up so it equalizes.

carolyn I somehow thought you were younger. I am also in my 70's. not ready to hang up on a fitness program.

we had an interesting event happen. we keep our chimney uncovered in summer for nesting Vaux's swifts. they are the west coast equivalent of chimney swifts. we've had them for probably 30+ years. they arrive, raise their young in the chimney and depart in early august. I keep a rough track of arrival and departure. when swifts head south for the season, they gather in large numbers and create a spectacle circling and diving into large chimneys or hollow trees to stay the night. a couple nights ago I noticed a lot of birds flying low over the skylight in our bathroom. just happened to noticed the shadows going by, while I was washing my face. I went outside to see, and thought at first bats. when I saw them a second night, I decided they were swifts. as darkness falls, they disappeared. I thought maybe they were going into our chimney. They were! I tapped the glass fireplace doors and could hear hum of wingbeats. they leave silently early in the morning. last night only a few but the first nights there were 20-40 birds. next year I will be on the alert for their arrival. it was probably happening for many years but I never noticed them before. we are assuming these are birds that nested here and fledged from here, return to their birthplace. there is a well known location about 40 miles from here where the swifts congregate at a large industrial chimney that was saved just to protect their roosting place. thousands stay there for a few nights in early fall. I took a video. Hollywood or Utube is not seeking my services, but you can see the birds circling the chimney. will forward to anyone who wants it.

this is not like 'squirrels in the attic". we have checked. even when nesting and raising young, never had a scrap of bird poop, shells, feathers. they are very considerate visitors. we get our wood stove chimney swept every year and have the man check this too.
.

I seriously would have sworn I posted yesterday, but apparently I only did it in my head. LOL Yesterday I did Cardio Kickboxing and Core. I really liked that one. Had a little of everything and the core uses a yoga ball. I alternate between my actual yoga ball and an old rubber ball of the boys because my yoga ball is a couple inches too big for some things. Earlier I did P30 Low Impact Hiit and I just finished doing Stacked Sets Lower Body with the extended stretch. Looking like another cool dreary day here. Yesterday it never made it to 70 and mid afternoon it was only 65. I have 6 towns on my trip to Marquette on my weather app and it was all under 70.

Carolyn listening to your body is so key to staying functional. Pushing and potentially hurting yourself would be so counter productive.

Valerie I would love to see that video. Sounds like you got in a really good ride yesterday. Riding into the wind makes for excellent leg work!

somehow wind is a bigger challenge than a hill, probably because you can't see it. it will quickly take you from 16 mph to 10 mph with the same leg effort. it's odd that a tailwind is a huge boost that makes it a lot easier but it's not as noticeable as the headwind that slows you down. I don't zip up to 20 mph with a tail wind. mid holiday weekend, traffic is way down and helped make it more enjoyable.

cathy its a video on my phone. I think I can send via email using mail drop. easier to text to a phone # if that works for you. I think I have your email from sending the owl pics but those were still shots not a video. if that works for you, send me your phone in a pm. I promise I wont sell it to telemarketers! trust me though, steven spielberg is not on the wait list for my services! its only fun to watch if you know what you are watching. phone is on the charger so might not be today.

I am also finding out quickly how much a too hard mattress was bothering my back. it was something I was not aware of that had built up gradually. now is improving steadily.

Today I did JS HiiT Walk for 30 minutes with 135 calories burned. My average heart rate was 135 and maximum heart rate was 170. Then I did Jane Adams Evening Relaxation practice which was 29 minutes and 31 calories burned. I’m not sure why she calls this an evening practice, but she does hold the poses a bit longer. My lower body always feels great after this practice, especially my tight hips and hip flexors.

Diane Sue, great job with the Raw workouts and CDorner stretch. My fitness goals are similar to yours in that I want to maintain flexibility and mobility as well as bone strength. My gynecologist always tells me to keep doing what I’m doing after my bone density tests.

Valerie, I think that we are near the same age. I hope that I am never ready to give up on fitness even if I have to do it in a chair.

Cathy, great job with Cardio Kickboxing and Core, P30 Low Impact HiiT, Stacked Sets Lower Body, and the Extended Stretch.

Waving hello to Judy. Have a wonderful day everyone.

carolyn ... clearly no guarantees on longevity but I come from a family where women lived into their upper 90's, were totally inactive blobs for their whole lives. my mother sat and sat and sat some more. all were obese. I plan to stay reasonably fit. genetically they were just lucky, surely no credit to any fitness or healthy eating involved. my father's family members all had big problems in mid 70's but they also didnt do any exercise, ate very very badly and were smokers besides. everyone had type 2 diabetes in both families. everyone had bad arthritis and joint issues.
cathy I sent you the video via mail drop and it looked like it went OK. I tried an attachment that didnt go anywhere.

Yesterday I did a 30 minute Peloton ride after work and tonight I did a 1 hour total body strength circuit at the gym.

Carolyn-great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga Morning Energy practice and JS HiiT Walk and Jane Adams Evening Relaxation practice. I really need to get some yoga into my schedule this week. I agree about never giving up on fitness.

Valerie-Great job with your road ride. Riding against the wind is very challenging. That video sounds really interesting. I wouldn't mind seeing it too.

Cathy-Great job with Cardio Kickboxing and Core, P30 Low Impact Hiit and Stacked Sets Lower Body. It's starting to feel like fall here.

Diane Sue-Great job with Raw Box and Pump 7 and Get Up and Move and the CDorner stretch. I agree about wanting to maintain mobility and bone density. I feel like Cathe's and Kelly's workouts have really helped me in that area.

Well another fun night. Fall asleep at 10, wake up at 12, back to sleep at 2 and got up at 6. I did manage to do Stacked Sets Upper Body using the same weights as Cathe, but it took every bit of my energy. I'd planned to walk at the zoo, but decided not to today. Dentist tomorrow afternoon, in the opposite direction so not happening tomorrow and I shop Thursday, so it'll have to be Friday this week.

Valerie I can't find where I got anything from you and checked all the possibilities. Just sent you my phone number, so hopefully you get it. I have a lot of longevity in my family, too. Grandparents lived to be 86, 96, 96 and 98 and none of them were healthy. The three that lived the longest were into their 90 and even mid 90's before they weren't really able to physically function on their own. I think it helped them that they were farming families and had big gardens, lived where the air was fresh, and had pretty active lives. My Dad's father had horrific habits. He was a huge sugar addict and always had a lot of candy around. Resulting in dentures when he wasn't all that old. And he loved fat, adored it. He'd cut the fat off his meat and eat it by itself. o_O But he was the same person, who, when he was in his mid 70's chased down and stopped a flat bed hay wagon that my sister (6) was still on when it started rolling down a hill. Man was wicked strong for his age.

Carolyn nice job with the Hiit Walk and Evening Relaxation.

Judy great job with the Peloton ride and strength circuit at the gym.

cathy I will try again using text. I used mail drop yesterday but have no clue how its supposed to work or how fast.
we are doing vehicle services today and tomorrow dental check up/cleaning. will do upper body. I always like stacked upper bodty. no dread factors and it goes quickly without a lot of equipment management.

my mother and grand mother were both 98, aunts were mid 90's. the only uncle passed in his 70's. grandfather departed earlier too. the men didn't do great but the women, who did nothing physical and ate everything in sight, lived forever, but didn't enjoy a single minute! my grandmother was like your grandfather, cutting off the fat to eat and leaving the lean parts, pouring cream and butter on everything. she did a lot of the cooking in our house and it shaped my eating habits. it made the fatty stuff revolting. I never ever could look at german food, pork, sausage, or cream sauce ever again. even doing dishes was hard because everything was so greasy. everyone baked like crazy too, cakes, pies, cookies. they were good bakers but it was not just special occasions, but for everyday meals. not a healthy diet! I had a great uncle who was like yours, a farmer, strong and wiry who ran a truck farm by himself well into his 80's. it was hard to imagine he and my grandmother were brother and sister.

No workout for me today. I took my car for service expecting it to be couple of hours. Well this is a major service appointment and now I have a loaner vehicle. I am very intimidated by this new vehicle! The technology is so sophisticated. Driving this one is good practice for me since I do plan to buy a new vehicle sometime soon. I understand why they offer technology training sessions with new cars.

Valerie, my family was the same with poor eating and inactive lifestyles. I have always been the “odd one” because I was concerned with food and fitness. I’m glad that I have been able to pursue better habits. When I visit I always go to the grocery store to pick up food that I can eat.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride and Total Body Circuit at the gym.

Cathy, I’m so sorry that you had another night of broken sleep. I’m impressed that you were able to do Stacked Sets Upper Body.

Hello to Diane Sue.

Yesterday I did CDorner Crazy Fun Step Aerobics, 62 minutes, heart rate 128/158, 313 calories, 4,936 steps. Today I did Cathe Boss Loops Glutes and Core Mish Mosh #4 double standing lower body with low impact cardio, 43 minutes, heart rate 124/164, 210 calories, 2,179 steps. I also did CDorner mobility from a couple of weeks ago, 31 minutes, 63 calories. Total time was 74 minutes, 273 calories.
I have not been feeling well the last few days and all of the coughing and sneezing plus Raw Box and Pump 7 even though short set off my neck, traps and shoulders big time. Last night I spent several hours doing hand sewing which really did not help. I feel somewhat better after my workout though. I still have more sewing to do though. Hopefully it goes quickly.

Valerie, watching the birds do their nesting would be a fun experience. I guess it does not cause a problem with the fireplace then?

Sorry, got to haul in groceries from the door step.

Just finished Express Your Step. First section is a long 96 count routine, followed by a few rounds of IMAX style and finishing with Ab Stacker Abs that pretty much comes directly from Step Boss. So excited to go get my teeth cleaned today. NOT

Valerie I was definitely the odd one out in my family. When I went vegan in '88, the grandfather who loved fat was still alive and just kept wanting to know when I was going to come to my senses. Everyone else just rolled with it, because I had always done my own thing and they knew to just except it. LOL From the beginning I never expected anyone to make stuff special for me, so I'd always take my own food, and supplement with sides they had. To this day, I do that. My parents, especially my Dad eat way better these days, my sister eats healthy compared to the majority of people, but all of them including my brother are on some type of medication. My brother still smokes, too, even though he has issues caused by it. Hope your dental appointments go well.

Carolyn sorry to hear you are having to have major repairs done. My car is a 2019, but a pretty basic model, so I really had little to learn other than to navigate the music system. I do love having Sirius, being able to play my music, podcasts and audiobooks. Other than that though mine has no bells and whistles. My parents recently got a new car and it has a fair number of things on it that will help keep my Mother from driving it. She can't see and even 5 years back she would get confused as to where she was. Anything that stops her from trying to drive is a plus.

Diane Sue sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Hopefully things improve for you soon.

Yesterday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride and Muscle Meltdown Biceps. I had to get a root canal done this morning. Looks like most of this group had dental appointments this week.

Valerie-Thanks again for the video. Mail drop worked well for me. Hope your dental appointment goes well.

Carolyn-The technology on new cars can be intimidating. I didn't know about the technology training classes, or at least we didn't see them offered when we got our car last spring, but I can see why they would be helpful.

Cathy-Great job with Express Your Step. I hope your dental appointment goes well today.

Diane Sue-Nice job with CDorner Crazy Fun Step Aerobics and the Cathe Boss Loops Glutes and Core premix. I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. I hope you feel better soon.

we are both getting routine cleaning at the dentist so not a biggie. judy hope your root canal went well.

diane sue, sounds like you are getting into allergy season. our fireplace is not usable as a fireplace. most arent. the birds are clean little guys and leave no debris at all. they cling to the bricks inside vertically with their feet. fascinating little creatures. they are mostly gone for the year now and must have moved on south. we then re cap the chimney opening for the winter.

I get annoyed with some of the new features on vehicles. we bought our last cars with minimal electronics. some new features are fine, helpful but others terribly fussy. wish it were easier to turn off temporarily what you don't want.

This morning I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one for 27 minutes and 178 calories burned. My average heart rate was 128 and maximum heart rate was 163. I had my virtual WW meeting after that then I went to the tag office to renew my car tags. I drove over there took care of business and was back home in 30 minutes. It would have taken longer to drive to the post office to mail the form and then wait and hope that the sticker arrived in time.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner Crazy Fun Step Aerobics, Boss Bands Glutes and Core, and CDORNER mobility. I am also having allergy issues. I hope that you are feeling better today.

Cathy, nice job with Express Your Step. I hate going to the dentist, but it does feel good after the cleaning.

Judy, nice job with the Peloton ride and Muscle Meltdown Biceps. My Lexus dealership offers the training and my daughter had something similar with her new Volvo.

Valerie, my car is 14 years old and most things are different. I have a backup camera, navigation system and other features that were available then. I don’t need all of the features on new cars, but some things are helpful to have.

Have a wonderful afternoon everyone.

carolyn, my car is 18 yo! it doesn't have a lot but it's comfortable, low mileage, runs fine, but mainly back up these days to our main vehicle. its AWD and chugs right thru ice and snow. we have a much newer subaru, '18 or '19, and 2 ford trucks. an '09 and a '20. we didn't get a big electronics package with any of them but base features change. it takes a few minutes to get oriented to each one since features/size varies. we have back up cameras on 2 of them. when traveling out of our area I may use the phone to navigate. I don't want a phone hook up since I will not use the phone while driving.... only if I'm a passenger. I know everybody out there thinks they can multitask.... but I don't. I would take a class in a second if it were beneficial just to take full advantage of all new things you just paid for.

Type 2 diabetes was a big issue for my family too. not sure about my mother or grandmother (nobody checked) but everyone else had it, although they didn't admit it, as so do my brother and sister. my brother, his wife and their kids are huge. all they eat is fast food. zero exercise. nobody even tries! its depressing to be around them. luckily I will never have to have any contact with them again. completely unhealthy lifestyles. I was the weirdo who exercised and was vegetarian. I eat some chicken now and occasionally some fish but no red meat in 50 years.
I did x train core and a general set of upper body exercises and my PT back and hip exercises. about 30 minutes altogether.

DH was going to put the cap on the chimney this morning but there were still birds inside. don't know how many but he could hear wings so we will watch tonight to see if we can tell about how many. the last time I watched I saw only 2 or 3.but maybe more were already inside. from what Ive read, their feet are not suited to sitting on branches so they hang vertically in tree hollows or chimneys to rest.

This morning I did Stacked Sets Upper Body. My time was 42 minutes with 196 calories burned. My average heart rate was 116 and maximum heart rate was 148.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful afternoon.

From yesterday(I thought that I posted)

No workout today. I did not get much sleep and needed to go return a package from Amazon. I was so annoyed when two of my packages came and something was wrong. One was an empty package that was a glass cleaner for the aquarium with magnets. Right after I contacted them, I checked out the scrub Daddy package and I had ordered a two pack of sponge Daddy's and they gave me 1 of what looked like a 2x3 inch sample called a scrub mini. I am still sneezing and coughing. I am pretty sure it is the allergies. I follow the allergies for where I live on Pollen People .com. They send me emails. I wasn't so bad when it was just grasses, but chenopods entered and now ragweed and it is high at 10.5 today and forecast is 10.6 tomorrow. I have been outside doing some stuff in planters and trimming rose bushes since we got back.

Today I did Tracy Steen, Sweaty all standing no repeat cardio that Cam did recently. This was tough, but good. I tried to stick to it without the modifiers. A couple of times I added a few seconds of modifiers to get my wind. I did like it and it got my heart rate up :) This was 48 minutes, heart rate 135/161, 267 calories, 4022 steps. I swear it should have been more calories. Oh well! I then did Raw Slim Sculpt with some of the warm up from a Tracy Steen bone building workout that I stopped when her first move was squat thrusts. So Slim Sculpt with the extra warm up was 31 minutes, 146 calories, heart rate 118/139, 1,371 steps. I had to lighten up the weight portions like I did when I did it before. 152's for the first heavier moves, dropped to 10's for most of the other heavier and used 3 and 5 for the light. I am hoping to get in a lower body workout tomorrow and maybe at least some areas of upper on Saturday.
Total today was79 minutes, 413 calories, 5,393 steps. Feeling better today.
My family was always on the slender side. Great grandparents lived to close to 100, then next generation seems to have come up with Alzheimer's, cancer, and heart disease, my mother with ALS. My mother ate pretty healthy took bee pollen every morning and bought local honey. We did not have things like coke and Dr Pepper in our house often. It was a special treat if we did. It was generally tea or water at the dinner table. Parents drank coffee sometimes. I don't get it really. I think a lot more is due to food processing and the tendency to buy pre-packaged stuff. As we moved along with what grocers sold, diets changed for the worse. I remember corned beef hash coming out and mom making hash with an egg in the middle, macaroni and cheese in a box came along. Yucky stuff really.

Cathy, so funny as I first read you were so excited about getting your teeth cleaned. My brain totally left out the "not". I need to do that to. Just have not made up my mind whether to get a dentist closer or keep the one I have. It is probably more procrastinating on my part. I get the sleep patterns. Mine is sleep wake up an hour or two later, try to get comfortable and watch the clock till I fall back to sleep, wake up sometime after my husband comes in from work at 5 am, get up and fall back to sleep in the recliner for an hour or two. It is pretty consistent with this pattern. Then my dog thinks it is time to get up when I sit in the recliner. We always decline Sirrus in our vehicles. We both listen to radio talk shows. I had not thought of podcasts, but I don't generally take long trips since we moved back to OKC. I used to play stuff on my tablet if not the radio as I made the 100 mile trip. Also I sometimes listened to recording put on cd's. Although I think a lot of vehicles do not have that now. Sort of like laptops. I made sure my laptop still had a disc drive when I got it. Unfortunately I did not realize it was not touch screen which I miss a lot.

Carolyn, I get it on the new vehicles and driving. I told my husband I was not going to drive his new Rubicon Gladiator Jeep pick up. It cuts off at long stops and stuff. I would be afraid I would do something wrong and have an accident. It is intimidating. But, dh has had issues with the Taurus in ice and snow and the last two winters we have had plenty of ice. So, I don't have to worry about him as much. I stay home as I am not driving my little Chevy Spark in nasty weather. I change appointments. The problem with all of the electronic stuff in vehicles is when some computerized component goes out other things don't always function correctly. It costs a lot to get it fixed. You cannot do little things on the vehicle yourselves. My Dad was a mechanic and had his own shop at one time before he became a pastor. Nice work with stacked sets today.

Judy, great job with the Peloton ride and Meltdown Biceps. Root canals are not pleasant. It requires too much time sitting in the chair with one's mouth hanging open. I hope it went well for you.

Valerie, we have a fireplace on our patio, but so far we have never used it and it does not look like the first owners used it either. I just do not see me sitting outside with the fireplace lit. If it is cold I stay in the house. Inside is a gas fireplace which we do use. The birds do sound quite fascinating. The only birds that ever wanted to come and nest at our house was swallows and I had a terrible time getting them to go away. I think I spent the whole season trying to get them to go away and cleaning up a mess. Nice work with X Train core and upper along with PT exercises. I guess I missed that you were doing PT.
