Pentagenarians & Beyond: October 4, 2026

This morning I did Live Stretch and Flow.

Shannon I’m you need to stop walking on the road but better safe than sorry.

Valerie, my sister enjoys the animals around them, including a number of regular deer, but she’s in a constant battle with them over her flowers and shrubs.

This morning I did Jane Adams Yoga for 18 minutes. Saturday was my rest day. I went to the Farmer’s Market for produce. It was raining but it stopped by the time I got there.

I’ve been trying to keep up with what is happening with Cathe’s business but was somewhat confused. I see now that another company has taken over the gym but she will still use the studio for Cathe Live.

Shannon, walking on the street can be dangerous. I’m glad that you were okay.

Cathy, nice job with Live Stretch and Flow.

Hello to Valerie and Judy.

We rode the trail this morning for 1.5 hours. it was foggy to start and cold but got sunny as we finished. fishing has opened on the river where we see salmon this time of year but we have not seen a one yet. we take time to look but some years are better fish runs than others.

Shannon we have the same issues when riding on regular roads. drivers are simply not paying as much attention as they should be and some folks are impaired too. We stick to the trail most of the time but there are several road crossings on it that are potentially dangerous. we never ever assume drivers will stop just because they are supposed to. some blow thru those intersections at high speed but even low speed could be deadly. defensive walking is as important as defensive riding. i hope you don't use headphones or ear buds. being unable to hear makes it doubly dangerous. it bothers me when i pass people listening to music or even talking on the phone while walking. they aren't paying attention. sometimes its fine but not always.

Yesterday I did a 45-minute Peloton Ride and today I did 40 minutes of walking with my husband. I am starting to feel some improvement with my sciatica but I’m being very cautious with exercise right now. After a couple more weeks I will try to add more strength work back in.

Cathy-I hope you and your family are doing ok. Nice job with Live Stretch and Flow.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Yoga. I saw some of Cathe’s Facebook posts about the changes at her gym. I hope everything goes smoothly for her and her crew.

Valerie-Great job with your trail ride.

Shannon-I’m sorry about your close call with the car. That is scary. I used to have a route that included a long road that didn't have a sidewalk. I had a couple of close calls and no longer use that route.

Good morning, ladies. I spent several hours Saturday rearranging furniture to get my treadmill (I accidentally just typed “dreadmill,” which might be more accurate …) into a nicer place since I’m going to be using it a lot more. Sadly, I’m done with road walks. I already feel confined, but oh well. I didn’t do a formal workout because of the furniture moving. But I figure that was a pretty decent “functional fitness” workout, right? I was gone most of Sunday, so no workout.

Cathy – how are you doing? I hope you’re okay. I’m sure Stretch and Flow felt really good.

Carolyn – I’m glad the rain stopped so you could enjoy the Farmer’s Market. It’s a shame what’s happened to Cathe’s business. I sure don’t know the details, but it’s kind of the end of an era, you know?

Valerie – Your ride sounds lovely, even the foggy and cold part. I would love a cold, foggy day. No, I don’t use headphones. I hate them. I don’t take any music with me when I’m outside. I want to listen to nature – and of course for oncoming traffic. But as I mentioned above, those days are over.

Judy – I’m glad your sciatica is improving. I just found out this weekend that my sister is dealing with it too.

even before it was listed on the trail rules, i was bellowing "on your left" as we approach people from the back. some folks are hard of hearing. many have ear buds or a headset, cant hear anything. the ones who hear usually say thanks or raise a hand to show they heard. there are cyclists who roll up silently. the ebikes are the worst. those folks go very fast and dont see if someone steps into their path they will be the one likely to be injured. lots dont wear helmets. some bicycles travel with music of their own. crazy out there! i also want to listen to nature but having hearing blocked is a huge risk. for walkers, there are EV's now. its creepy how quiet they are. it almost seems they should make some noise as a safety issue. sorry you are locked into the treadmill. its sad how many distracted drivers there are increasing the risk to walkers and other drivers. as daylight time shortens thats another risk. best be safe.

i've wondered about Cathe's business too. DVDs are fading out. age is a factor too. so much content available free online and she is going to lose clients as the whole group ages out.

Today I did LiTE Cardio Party, 39 minute, 230 calories burned, average heart rate 129, and maximum heart rate 150.

Judy, nice job with your Peloton ride and walking with your husband. I’m glad that the sciatica is getting better.

Shannon, rearranging furniture and getting better access to your treadmill sounds like a workout to me.

Valerie, nice job with your road ride.

Hello to Cathy.

Today was an active rest day. I did about 30 minutes of PT work and stretching. I feel pretty good but I don't want to overdo it while I'm seeing improvement. I'm going to try and stay consistent with taking rest days even when I feel like working out.

Shannon-It's good that you have better access to your treadmill now. I agree with Carolyn, moving furniture sounds like a good workout to me.

Valerie-I remember yelling "on your left" back in my group riding days. I'm so glad there weren't e-bikes around back then. Riding and running on the bike path was more fun and probably a lot safer back then. I think this is a big reason for the success of the Peloton bikes and treadmills. It's just so much safer to train indoors now in most areas.

Carolyn-Great job with LiTE Cardio Party.

Hi to Cathy

This morning I did LMR Functional Upper Body, 37 minutes, 101 calories burned, average heart rate 105, and maximum heart rate 130.

Judy, it’s good that you are taking more rest days and listening to your body.

Hello to Valerie, Shannon, and Cathy.

Judy we are lucky here that there was a program to use old railroad right-of-ways and convert to walking and riding trails. DH and i used to ride on regular roads most of the time but as the area grew and got busier, it started getting harder and harder to do it safely. meanwhile trails were being paved that connect huge mileages around puget sound with beautiful trails. I didnt appreciate it at first but now i do. there are still active roads, driveways to cross that require caution but most of the ride is away from vehicle traffic. ebikes are a hazard. people who never rode get one and can go 20+mph without effort and without knowing the rules or common sense. ive ridden since i was a couple years old. I still like riding outdoors much more than indoors.
would have loved the Cardio party workout. never mastered it or even close.

had time to ride this afternoon, so we rode the trail for 1 hr 18 minutes 15 miles. it was sun and fog in and out. really lovely.

Yesterday I did Live Jabs, Bags and Standing Abs. They title gave me hope, but while all the movements were fine, the sequencing is not what I like. Rounds of boxing, Bags and then a few standing core exercises with weight. Can’t keep a heart rate up with that. Then I did lLive PSA Supersets 2 No Repeats. After that I went to my parents, my sister is there now. Today I did AOLIH all of it not the mix I made.

I’m curious to see how soon Cathe will be putting out new workouts. When she first talked about the switch to all digital she said it would allow them to put out new stuff faster since they wouldn’t have all the time consuming steps DVD’s created.

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix, workout two, 29 minutes, 191 calories burned, average heart rate 128, and maximum heart rate 150.

Valerie, I’m glad that you had nice weather for an afternoon trail ride.

Cathy, good job with Live Jabs, Bags, and Standing Abs, and Live PHA Supersets, No Repeats.

Hello to Judy and Shannon.

Hi, ladies. Monday I lifted weights, which was fine. Yesterday I did my first treadmill workout in quite a while, which was not fine. I kept the incline low, but I guess it wasn’t low enough. Or something about my stride on the machine is different from on the ground. My hamstring problem really flared up, and it hurts. I am really at loss about what to do. How on earth am I supposed to get a good workout now? Dang it all.

Today I had to go into town for an event. I was a “runner,” delivering supplies to various stations across campus. I got in my steps, LOL. But because my hamstring was already sore, it was really bothering me by the end of the event. Again, Dang it all. I’m going to try some stretching and foam rolling in a bit.

Valerie – I could never get into bicycling. And of course out here where I live, that’d probably be even more hazardous than walking now. No shoulders on the road, no bike lanes, etc. Oh and yes, I was going to have to switch to the treadmill for the winter anyway because of the shorter days. I wasn’t looking forward to it, and now I’ve had to move it up. Blah.

Carolyn – Do you like Cardio Party? I had it once and literally threw it in the trash!

Judy – I sure am glad you’re seeing improvement. Very wise of you to stick with your active rest days. I guess I probably need to do that too.

Cathy – Sounds like you’re getting some good workouts in! I hope you and your family are doing ok.

Yes, it’ll be interesting to see the changes Cathe makes in her workout production. I’ll follow and see what happens, but I won’t be subscribing or ordering downloads. I guess my Cathe days are over.

Today I did Intensity, version I put together. I always, always forget how incredibly well named it is. Then I did LMR2 Elevated Upper Body.

I’ve had On Demand for a few years, and I’ll do it as long as it’s available. I long ago became rather a variety junkie and my days of doing the same few workouts are long over.

I had a productive morning. first appt was physiatrist where we reviewed outcome of hip injections and I talked about my re done xrays from yesterday that we had not seen. i thought the first xrays i got did not capture the area where i have discomfort. I explained the delay on spinal injection until next week. then we went to my ortho appt. he does mainly sports medicine and the front office was not going to put me on his calendar because im "beyond a certain age" but i said check with him. they called back in an hour and gave me an appt in 2 day he took one look at yesterdays xrays and said yes!! you need a new hip! definitely. no equivocating. i felt tremendous relief!!. i was just sure my hip was a separate issue from my back but that the two were related. ( DH goes with me. 2 sets of ears are better than one.) he went on to say that the loss of joint space on my left side might be related to the back fusion. a new hip might improve the back issues because it will increase that joint space again. this is something i felt might be happening and had talked about many times. its such a relief to find out what i felt was accurate. it will take a while to see the surgeon and get some precheck things done first but i am going to proceed with this ASAP.

i have never understood exactly how people make an income off internet activities but hopefully cathe can continue to make a living doing that. i am past needing new workouts. I will use what i have until i cant exercise anymore.

Shannon i agree, if it's not safe to ride where you live, its not worth trying. the trail we use is close, 10 min from where we live. i can ride our neighborhood too. there are still a few rides on roads we can do if we go at the right time. Dont give up on the treadmill too quickly. a little tilt might be better than flat and vary the speed if yours has pre programmed workouts on it. different is always going to take adjusting to. cut your distance too.

Hi, ladies. My stretches and foam rolling last night helped the old hamstring. We shall see what happens during my workout this evening.

Cathy - I remember Intensity, and I agree - it's very appropriately named. Congrats that you're still doing it! I'm jealous.

Valerie - Congrats to you as well! You get a new hip! You sure know how to push with your docs when it's needed. Way to go. Sometimes that is not easy. I'll try a few adjustments on the treadmill, but I don't have a lot of hope. I don't like it very much to start with, but it's what I'm down to. Sigh.

Hello to Carolyn and Judy.

This morning I did LMR Functional Lower Body. I did the no step timesaver, 38 minutes, 100 calories burned, average heart rate 102, and maximum heart rate 122.

Shannon, I’m glad that stretching and foam rolling helped with the hamstring pain. Hopefully you will be able to find the optimal setting on your treadmill. I do like Cardio Party. I try to use workouts that don’t cause me to dread just thinking about them!!

Valerie, I’m sure that you are relieved to know what needs to be done for the hip pain.

Hello to Cathy and Judy.

yesterday i fired up the treadmill and walked uphill on it for 20 min and then did half of stacked upper body. today i got out the mt bike and rode the neighborhood. DH's bike is still in the shop. it took me 45 min, longer than usual. i had difficulty juggling my jacket and my phone and had to stop a few times to to adjust things. i am still doing all my stretching and ab work for at least 30 min a day. i don't bother mentioning it all the time. walking is probably going to be an issue for me because thats where my hip is failing. riding so far is just fine so i may rely ,ore on it until i get this fixed which might take a while to get arranged.

i would like cardio party if i didn't have 2 left feet. i never was able to do the footwork even if its not fancy. i tried and failed. even the tutorial did not help. i cant understand why i cant, but i cant.

cathy i don't think I ever answered about deer and ornamental plants. its a constant battle!. we don't plant things deer are known to love. we learned that roses and dogwoods and plenty of other shrubs were going to get eaten. they eat strawberries, the entire plant wth roots. they eat blueberry bushes. we try to plant things they dont eat but that can change. one year they like something and then dont touch it for 5 years and then decide it tastes good again. or minnesota deer eat one thing but Washingdeer dont bother. or a plant is labeled as deer resistant and they prove otherwise. the veggie garden needs to be fenced. even fenced its vulnerable because they use their noses to lift up the edges of the netting and stroll right in. especially the fawns. getting back out they may take down the whole fence with them. plenty of plants they chew on sometimes, or just the flowers etc. we use deer repellant sprays some, but if it rains a lot they wash off. so a forever war thats never entirely won or lost. bucks are way more pushy than does.

Hey Judy. My sister has sciatica. What would you advise? She stopped running last week. She stretches, but I don’t know specifics on what kind. Does ice help? Maybe that tape that everyone uses now? What sort of PT, so maybe I can convince her to try going? Thanks for any help you can give.
