Pentagenarians & Beyond 3/120

This morning I did Chiseled Lower Body Blast, a timesaver premix with fewer intervals. That was 38 minutes and and 231 calories burned. Average heart rate was 125 and maximum heart rate was 155. I had to run a few errands after my workout but I’m happy to say that it didn’t take long.

Diane Sue, that sounds like a nice workout that you did. Is Burpeegirl the name of the trainer?

Valerie, yes, I can start the thread on Sunday.

Hello to Judy and Cathy.

No workout yesterday as I was shopping. Today I did Intensity, the Step and Low Impact Hiit premix. Not sure I've done this one since it came out in 2010. LOL I remember why now as it's a lot of moves I don't care for though I can't deny I got a good workout. Had a broken night's sleep and was ready to toss in the towel after the step, but decided to give the Low Impact Hiit and go and it was way easier than the step part. I didn't find it anywhere near as intense plus it's only about 11 minutes long. Back to STS tomorrow with the first workout of Meso 3.

I've been following people's drama over the Mackinac Bridge being closed most of the last day due to ice falling from the cables. Was closed from about noon to 11 last night, and reopened until about 8:45 this morning. Still closed. Guy had a chunk of ice take out his windshield a couple years ago. One big chunk on the passenger side gone and the rest all messed up. There's a reason they close it, and the people complaining the most, of course, weren't the people waiting to cross. It can be closed any day of the year for weather, accident or threat, and closing for ice on the cables isn't a new thing. Only other ways to the UP are to drive all the way down around Chicago and up through Wisconsin or if the weather is good the ferry across to Wisconsin. And those aren't real options.

Valerie sorry you had a rough go yesterday trying to ski and snowshoe. Hopefully your road ride today was a huge improvement!

Diane Sue that B&B sounds excellent! I'm sure you will have a great time there. That's great that you were able to do all the Low Impact Hiit workout!

Carolyn great job with Chiseled Upper Body!

I posted last before I intended but we did the ride this morning and now I'm back. it is the shorter one we do, 15 miles takes an hour 15 minutes.
we used to have way more options for spring ski/snowshoe, but a lot of those roads are not accessible anymore. the forest service doesn't have the budget it once had and things get closed rather than maintained. so we are down to only a very few roads. the one yesterday has a lot of blow downs every year. it gets windy. with all the rain the soil gets soft and down they go. this was too much to fix for us, it looked like at least a mile of very messy trees and branches. we are going to go to MT for a break. its not as treed there so roads and trails don't get buried every year. they dont have the huge snowpack washington gets.

cathy we have similar issues with mountain passes. the state is more cautious to close hwys for avalanche risk or control. it annoys everyone because there is no other way realistically to go west to east. so people complain, but if someone gets caught in an avalanche, very quick to sue the state for big $$$. there was an incident a few years ago where a large number of trees fell along a major hwy killing and injuring several people. so public officials just cant win, and now they err on side of caution.

diane sue that sounds like a luxurious indulgent place to spend several days. congrats on 49 years.

Back in '89, a woman went over the bridge in a small car. Multiple contributing factors, but they got a lot more cautious. Avalanche's are scary things! Incidents of the bridge rarely involve more than one or two vehicles, an avalanche has a lot of power for destruction. Glad you got your ride in. Really too bad that your options for activities have narrowed over the years.

we found out yesterday from a neighbor that a person was killed by a grizzly very close to where we live. near the road we frequently use for hiking and mountain biking. plenty of other people use it too, not obscure, but off season, like now, use is low. road is closed to motorized until roads dry out. our neighbor walks there regularly, we ride, people ride horses up the road. when we hike/ride we carry bear spray (on the bike frame) because we are 'bear aware". carry binoculars, scan slopes for anything obvious. not heard yet if there was a "reason" for the attack or if it was predatory. mamma bears with cubs are aggressive. if the person or if someone accidentally walked up on a carcass. this is extremely close to home for us. especially since that is where we are heading tomorrow. we wont be riding there until the bear issue is resolved.

cathy states have become more wary of lawsuits. avalanche control is a big part of highway safety here especially on the interstate with its heavier traffic. we have a lot of bridges here too. falling ice is not an issue, but bridge collapse is! and landslides. huge landslide here 7 years ago (Oso) was a near miss for us. 43 people were killed mostly in their homes, but also on the hwy. we drove thru the area 2x that morning .missed it by half an hour. went to the mountains but were uneasy because we saw so many minor slides along the forest service road. we decided to bail, and not do the planned trip. the drive home was fine. while we were unloading our car our neighbor texted me pictures of what had just happened. since that day I always tell her where we are going and check in when we return. the state ended up paying our a lot of money to families who were killed though it was a slope that had never been considered risky at all. I feel the state has to be very careful.

I’m taking a rest day today. I was feeling a little tired and dreading a workout. That tells me that I needed a rest day. I went to the Farmer’s Market, but it was too windy to browse. I picked up what I needed and quickly left.

Cathy, Intensity is a tough workout. I don’t do it often, but I always choose a premix that is low impact. Great job. That falling ice is scary.

Valerie, that grizzly bear attack is terrible. I know that you are always cautious, but it’s good that you will avoid that area for a while.

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

Carolyn we will totally avoid the area until we hear what happened with the specific bear. F&W departments track incidents closely, since like falling ice or bridges collapsing, they can get sued if they don't act responsibly and someone is injured or killed.
some people do stupid things, so the bear should not be blamed immediately. some bears are unafraid, attack without provocation. no room for that either. no idea what happened to this poor guy.

Valerie that's so scary! Hopefully they will figure out what triggered the attack.

Today was chest and back first of Meso 4. Only thing I struggled with was chest press and I was able to do them. Weights get higher the next two weeks, so we'll see what happens. Ground was covered with snow when I woke up and it kept snowing till at least mid morning, but it's all gone now. Not that it ever got warm, but enough above freezing plus the ground has warmed up.

Carolyn some days you just know you're better off resting.
