Pentagenarians & Beyond 2/27

so hoping for some opinions here as we transition to cell phones only.
I carry our main cell phone. the land line has had 5 extensions around the 3 floors of our house.
when in our house/ yard I carry cell if expecting a call. he is talking( about me carrying the phone all the time! he has a phone. never gave out the number, doesn't turn it on 99% of the time. he will get his phone updated to our old land line number, so might get more calls for a while. I foresee him handing me the second phone to carry too. I plan to let calls go to voice mail, and leave the cell in the kitchen. do you carry your cell with you when you are gardening, exercising, vacuuming, whatever? I know most couples have completely separate phones but for a lot of reasons, we never did that. How do you sort out who carries the phone/phones? I want to designate a place for the phone to be most of the time, but dont plan to be a slave to it. it's a big iphone. doesn't fit into pockets easily, especially not if doing outsdoor work.
cathy after a long drive I make or reheat dinner, have a glass of chardonnay, watch mindless Tv or read. I would not be in mindset to exercise.

Valerie, we still have a land line, but we each carry our own cell phones. I always have mine close by at home, but I would not carry it for working around the house and outside. If I were you I would continue carrying it the same way as you do now even without a land line. Let the calls go to voicemail and check it later. I get notifications on my Fitbit and can see who is calling on the cell without having the phone on my person.

thanks carolyn. we had an example of future this morning. I left cell phone on charger in kitchen. volume half way up. DH was in his office 10 feet away expecting a call. I was upstairs washing my face, dressing, putting in contact lenses. I came down to him screaming about missing the call. it's "my fault" because phone was not loud enough. its as if he has no responsibility for the phone on his desk or his pocket! I don't want to be responsible for everything! I carry it most of the time but not signing up for 24/7.
I don't want another device to wear so "I" need to find him when "his" call finally comes.

think he just got his call back but now has phone next to him. he doesn't know how inconvenient it can be.

Today PT was not so bad as I expected, after yesterday. Yesterday I iced all day and woke hurting at 3 am this morning and grabbed a gel ice pack and went back to bed. The back of my shoulder is getting a lot of work and my traps get sore and really tight which causes neck pain. I got up 3 hours later and did stretching and rolled on the traps a bit. Felt better by the time I left the house at 8:30 to do it again. Today I could even get my arms up and down laterally from the front in a rainbow. Progress is good. Most of the stretching deeper was tolerable, other than he has moved to another angle of a rotated stretch which really hurts. Was really hurting when I got home, but I iced. Worked on the knots and then took a nap as last night I did not sleep well. I am better now. I talked to the PT about cardio. I told him the surgeons PA that I see said I could use the spin bike and told me to ask the PT what I was ready for. The PT said the Tread climber would be fine. I mentioned the step without using the arm and he said things like that would be fine too. He said as far as arm movement I can move it as I feel I can as I am well along on the healing process.

Cathy, I hope that you have safe travels. Be careful. It is warm here today and low 70's. Rain coming in and I noticed it is cloudy. I thought rain was supposed to hit Sunday.

Carolyn, is Power Splits one of Kelly's new workouts? I knew she was doing new ones and I see them on her Raw channel. Have you done the Cardio Fit one? I need to check out what is on them. SHe has them up on her Raw channel, but those won't have pre-mixes like the dvds. Sometimes she adds some pre-mixs to the Raw channel on a few. I look, but she does boxing on so much cardio, that I keep holding off. Not ready for boxing or weightlifting yet. I keep up my subscription to Raw as I am grandfathered in at 6.99 a month. She does have good stretches and some body weight work. I noticed she added some technique and form which I need to look at. I bet I could do step sync with limits on right arm.

Judy, nice work on the Peloton workout. I see you have done the Power Splits as well as Carolyn. Do you like them? I am so anxious for the time I can get back to doing what I want.

Valerie, we do not have a landline anymore. It has been 8 years since we quit. He only kept one before that for work if there was power outages or something where cell was not charged and they needed to reach him. I do not carry my husbands phone around. I do not take mine outside unless I am expecting an important call. Like Carolyn, I get notifications on my watch when there are calls and can see who it is a lot of the time. The phone does not go with me around the house. I do monitor my husband's phone when he is sleeping during the day, but rarely answer unless it is something I know he needs me to. That does not happen either. The phones will say possible span for a lot of calls on his and I do not pick up. He keeps less things blocked than I do because he has work people call and business things. I do not get many calls I do not want to talk to. Except maybe CVS trying to get me to move prescriptions or refill things I do not want. I ignore. My husband wears cargo pocket pants and keeps his phone on him when we are out, work he wears a carrier on his belt. Neither of us carry our cell phones to the bedroom when sleeping and I have my settings for notifications off during sleeping hours. Not disturb. I can change that easily if I think I need to be able to be notified for something serious. My husband keeps his phone loud and loud tones for texts etc. I keep mine low and not so obnoxious. His literally makes me jump when it goes off when I am sitting here quietly like now. I understand though, that we do what we need. I do not like to talk on the phone that much personally. My husband hates texting, but with our family and the younger ones they all tend to want to just text. No person to person talks. Weird how that is. I carry his secondary glasses and keys around most of the time except lately I remove them to lighten my handbag. He bought me a new purse that is not so huge and has pockets. I had been carrying a small crossbody bag and could not get my wallet in it and new phone stuck out the top. I got a smaller wallet. Much better on the shoulders and it can be crossbody as well, but a 10-inch purse both directions.
Oh, and my husband got a big phone and it is one of the Galaxy ones that fold out into a huge phone. I do not like messing with it. I have a lot of apps I use on my phone and my husband does not, and really likes his stuff all put in a specific order. I have folders, but 2 pages of apps. Least used on the second one so I can read from Kindle or my Bible app when waiting for appointments etc.

right now, I don't need to monitor his phone since he hardly even turns it on. this will change when we get our current land line number ported over to his phone. he has an older iphone, I have a newer bigger iphone. I sleep with phone next to me, sound turned way down. if someone called I'd probably hear it. I don't have my phone connected in my car. I would not talk while driving anyway. If I need to take a call, I pull over or call back when I get where Im going.
I prefer texting to talking mainly because it makes everyone get right to the poin,t including appt reminders. seems like every medical or dental appt now results in at least 4 text reminders. we dont get much spam on the cell or land line.
I bought a Bagalini purse with pockets. not much bigger than a big wallet. I can fit one phone in it but two is overload. one two pairs of glasses, keys. I have bigger bags but prefer the small one. I hate it when people have loud ring tones or loud conversations in public places. I never do that. I don't like talking on the phone but am stuck with that with my sister since she cant do anything else. thats a factor in how much I've grown to hate the phone. women are somewhat used to hauling "something" along since only recently our clothes have usable pockets.

I expect he will carry his own phone sometimes. he always has pockets. he's just used to having someone else carry everything for him.

Diane Sue, yes Power Splits and Cardio Fit are the newest workouts. Power Splits uses heavy weights with finishers at the end. Cardio Fit is boxing cardio which would not be good for your shoulder right now. There is a brief preview of both at the bottom of the Coffeyfit home page, but the premixes are not there.

Diane Sue-I really like both of Kelly's new workouts. I think you would like them once you are back to doing more of those kind of workouts. I plan on doing them again next week. I think doing a short rotation of Power Splits would be a good way to work up to doing longer heavy weight strength workouts. That's kind of how I plan on using it. I'd like to do a round of STS (meso 2 & 3 only) later this year.

Valerie-We haven't had a landline since 2010 or so. Chris uses his iPhone for work. He is always answering work emails on it and/or using it for calling into work meetings. I keep my phone with me most of the time. I also prefer texting to talking and rarely get actual calls on it.

Carolyn-Great job with the Step Sync combos and Jessica Smith's Gentle Yoga, Total Body Flow.

Hi to Cathy

Took Derek up and came back to the bridge, south side. Area where he's at is going to be getting freezing rain/snow tomorrow. Definitely a win getting him up there today. Had clear dry roads, and sunshine the whole day. Should be good to go in the morning. At home tomorrow it's supposed to be mid 60's tomorrow! I'll be able to open the windows a bit and get some fresh air in the house. DH is meeting up with his brother tomorrow, so I should have a few hours to do the types of cleaning that are harder with him there. I have a huge room this time. Sent my sister a pic and she's like "you could teach a Zumba class in there." Yep. I have workout clothes with me and will make use of all that space in the morning for some cardio. I'm about 4 hours from home and should be there by lunch time.

Valerie we still have a land line but rarely ever use it. DH was finally forced to get a cell phone for work, so he has one. The only thing he needs me for is when he's doing something that's not work related and needs a PIN number for something. Then he has them sent to me. But, I do generally have my phone with/near me at all times. Mainly because of the boys. And I have it set so their texts and calls override my Do Not Disturb at night. Especially since Nick often works overnight and is going to work late and driving home at the point other people are waking up!

Diane Sue it sounds like you're making good progress with PT. Great that you are able to get cardio in! Like you, I have a lot of apps on my phone with multiple pages and some folders that have 5-9 in the them. I confess to having four weather apps. I've become a bit obsessive about the weather. LOL The forecast here kept changing over the last few days. I'd go to bed with it saying one thing and wake up to something different. At home we are now getting no rain this weekend, but potentially 1-3" of snow Monday. After a weekend in the 50's and 60's! It's crazy.

Hi Carolyn and Judy!

Did errands and grocery shopping yesterday, no workout.
thanks for your input about phones. part of the issue is he's a retired doc. he had employees dash around to hear whatever he was saying because that was their job. I'm not big on bowing and scraping. if he talks to me from another room, I don't acknowledge it. especially if in the kitchen cooking and the microwave or exhaust fan is on. I ignore it or I would be constantly running to the other room saying "what did you say?" only to have him tell me I'm deaf and refuse to repeat whatever he said. if he wants to talk to me, he has to wait until I'm not under the exhaust fan. believe me, its a hard habit to break. even now, if I'm 2 feet from noisy appliances, I can't hear what's on the TV or what he's saying. same thing. ignore. if its important, he'll learn. same with the phone. glasses last longer if I carry them but Im not signing up to be the OR nurse who slaps a scalpel into his hand before he says he needs it. the security company is dragging their feet so this may not be as rapid a transition as we hoped. we need to get that done before the phone switch.

when we are traveling I leave the phone on a higher volume for emergencies but not so loud I'll get a coronary if someone accidentally butt dials me at 2 am. sometimes I think the volume button does not register the up and down adjustments immediately. I know you can adjust sound from 'settings" and from the screen and also the side buttons. its not clear if one has priority over the others.

This morning I did Power Splits Lower Body for 32 minutes and 190 calories burned. Average heart rate was 126 and maximum heart rate 144. I had a nice trip to the outdoor farmer’s market today. The weather is wonderful and I found some great produce. I lIke to have more vegetable options with my meals these days. I just realized that our last three dinners have been vegetarian, not a conscious choice, but good nonetheless. We both love the sweet potato and black bean enchiladas that I made Thursday. We had the leftovers last night and today is another plant based meal with Royal corona beans and crispy mushrooms.

Cathy, great planning on your part to make your trip north and get half way back ahead of the bad weather.

Valerie, I don’t blame you for not taking responsibility for your husband’s phone!

Hello to Judy and Diane Sue.

From the moment I woke up this morning I had a crazy amount of energy. No idea where it came from and sure wish I knew so I could duplicate in the future. LOL I did P30 Low Impact Hiit, had breakfast and headed home. Got here just before noon. Another day of perfect road conditions. Today they had an ice storm in the UP. We hit 68 here. Will be 50's tomorrow then heading back down. Not much in the way of warm for the next two weeks. Mostly 40's. Got home and since DH was gone, I took advantage of no one being in my way! I ran the dishwasher and then partially reloaded it. Swept, mopped and vacuumed upstairs and cleaned the bathroom. Then made him quiche and me chili for supper. Just now starting to slow down. Still want to set up my workout for in the morning. Just hope that I'll be able to fall asleep!

Valerie I'm not big on waiting on my husband either and he would love me, too. That's what his Mother did when he was growing up and while he will say that he didn't like that she did that, it's really what he wants. She waited on everyone hand and foot. My Mother didn't. And his hearing isn't great and he doesn't talk very loud, so he'll say something, I don't catch it and when I ask him to repeat it he gets upset and says forget it. The man handles projects in the 10's of millions, but wants help with the simplest things.

Carolyn great job with Power Splits Lower Body!

This morning I did CDorner Basic Step easy follow from Feb 28, 132 bpm. 33 minutes, 151 calories, heartrate 117/148, 2420 steps. I also did Boss Loops Glutes and core mix no floor and just part of core. I modified some,32 minutes, 129 calories, heartrate 113/141, 1,213 steps.
Total time 65 minutes, 280 calories, 3,633 steps.

Carolyn, I checked on Kelly's website to watch check the clips. They did have premixes and stuff under programs and rotations for the new workouts. I will wait to purchase and watch the videos on the Raw channel. I have been eating a lot of vegetables lately. I have been eating a lot of vegetables with occasional salmon and tuna. For some reason most meat tastes odd to me. I really do not know why. The only chicken I like is one I get from Whole Foods that is vacuum packed and no added broth or anything. Just chicken breast. I need to find some easy things to fix.

Cathy, I have multiple weather apps on my cell too. I check weather apps to make sure weather is good when I go out. Nice that you had some decent weather travelling. It always feels nice to get things done around the house. You had a great day of accomplishments.

Valerie, maybe you can eventually work the phone situation out. I think couples need to both take responsibility for things and help each other. Sorry if it seems one-sided.

Judy, I do think that I will like the new Kelly workouts. Using them and then doing some STS sounds like a good plan.
