Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/24/2024

Today I did STS Disk 22 Chest, Shoulders and Triceps. Lots of drop sets, which makes it shorter, but definitely not easy.

When I was in kindergarten, I had to walk by myself up to the main road to catch the bus. We're talking what at the time was the road that semi's used and was part of what is now a business section of I-69. From our house Mom couldn't see me, you had to go to the end of the drive, but she had a baby and a toddler. And that winter was the blizzard of '67. And for some reason, the school decided to hold afternoon kindergarten. My Dad was really ticked at her for sending me. He came home early, and had to go to the corner and wait for me because the snow was too deep for me to walk in. Granted I was like 2' tall. LOL We moved that summer, new school district, and except the years we lived in town, the bus picked us up at our drive. I also think that after that blizzard all the schools were more careful about sending kids home early, not sending afternoon kindergartners etc. Both my parents grew up on farms, and I think because they had the freedom to roam when not in school or helping, it wasn't unusual at all for us to do the same.

Today was my weekly yoga/mobility for 18 minutes. We walked to school my entire school career. No buses.

In the case of the arrested mother, the town where they live is very small, only a few hundred people and they do a lot of walking. She was upset that her son left without permission, but walking is not unusual. I said that he was 10, but he actually turned 11 a few days after the incident. I am hopeful that common sense will prevail in this situation and the authorities will drop the charges.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Arms and JS Total Stretch. The holiday meal preparation is usually all me. Definitely no help from my husband! I don’t clean up after the meal—I leave that to the others.

Cathy, great job with STS disc 22 Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps.

Hello to Valerie, Judy, and Shannon.

I did a mt bike yesterday for 45 min. still doing my therapy work , some every day but not everything every day. today I will warm up on the spin bike and then do an upper body thing for 30 min.

we ended up with the router totally failing so dh set up the new one right away. always such a pleasant experience. :eek:we tried to change the pw and it would not accept it and then stopped working altogether.

I never saw that story but Im surprised a small town made such a fuss. I cant imagine anyone being upset with a child that old walking somewhere. 11 yrs old is not the same as 5.
walking to grade school was simple and only 2-3 city blocks away. junior high was further, more like a mile. it was hard sometimes if we got a lot of snow. we had to wear skirts no exceptions. I remember my legs getting cold! people who didnt shovel their sidewalks were such a pain, I dont remember there being school buses anymore, just city buses. high school was several miles and I needed to use city buses. back in the dark ages most women didnt work outside the home so it was assumed we could be sent home and would have access.

Didn't sleep well, so I just did Stretch Max with the band today.

Valerie when I was in school we could wear pants and in the winter we could wear snow pants under them to and from school and recess, but as a cheerleader on game days I wore my skirt, and that included waiting for the bus. Not sure why I didn't wear something else under it too and from school. I cheered in some pretty cold weather for football, even snow, and at best we could wear turtlenecks under our sweaters and nylons. 6 years later, my sister got to wear matching sweat pants and jackets. I was not amused at her privilege. Great job with the mountain bike ride and therapy, spin and upper body. I hate dealing with router issues, though printer issues top my list. Printers in particular seem to hate me. LOL I will say that the Verizon router we have now is by far the easiest to use that I've ever dealt with. Plug it in and log in.

Carolyn great job with the yoga.

We had another problem but this time with Dell updates that made the system balk and not work. DH called their support line and it got ironed out quickly but of course I got blamed for making it " not work" . its a standing joke that my mere presence in the room causes electronics to fail. now all is working fine. WAY faster than my old unit. It had reached the point I was turning it on an hour ahead of time to make sure it got itself settled before I used it.

even when it was way below zero we could not wear pants much less snow pants. tights didnt exist. we didnt have a place to store them during the day. lockers could barely hold winter coats. the ridiculous protocol lasted for many more years. I've resisted skirts and dresses my whole life but was not a choice then. lots of wool too and I needed to layer that because Im ridiculously itchy with wool next to my skin. even now, even merino. cant do it.

baking a pie right now. I had everything corralled because we'd planned to do this in montana. we are out of people to invite anymore. this is about the only time I miss having children, holidays. we will face time with cousins who are in the same position. I wish I liked football but a huge no. I know how its played and all but watching it is nothing I like.
we are on a "clean out cabinets" purge, and will probably tackle another space so something gets accomplished. its not good to have a lot of extra space because you can skip decisions and things build up.

did a half hour spin yesterday and skipped the weight workout. didnt feel well for a while and bailed.

Thursday, Friday & Saturday I did 45-minute Peloton Scenic rides. The longer, easier rides really felt good. Yesterday I did Yin Yoga and today I did 40 minutes of Peloton rides. Tomorrow is my PT appt and I will probably focus on strength and rowing for the rest of the week.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 22 Chest, Shoulders and Triceps and Stretch Max with the band. I walked to school alone when I was in kindergarten. If I remember right, my mom walked with me a couple of times so I would know the way then I was on my own. It was a different world back then. We drove by a grade school this morning and traffic was backed up for blocks with parents dropping their children off.

Carolyn-Great job with your weekly yoga/mobility. I also hope common sense prevails in that case and that they drop the charges.

Valerie-Great job with your mountain bike, therapy work and spinning.

Hi to Diane Sue & Shannon

Today I did STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body, express premix 2. My time was 36 minutes with 171 calories burned, average heart rate 119, and maximum heart rate 145.

Valerie, nice job with mountain biking and spinning. I love football! We watch a lot of games around here. I never sit and watch a full game, but I like to keep up what’s happening. I made pumpkin bread, something my grandson always asks for. He rarely asks for special things, so I try to make this for him. I will make pies tomorrow.

Cathy, I’m sorry that you didn’t sleep well. Stretch Max was a good choice.

Judy, great job with the Peloton rides and Yin Yoga.

Hello to Diane Sue and Shannon.

Today I did CDorner Halloween 2024 cardio stopping at the tabata segment, 15 minutes, 80 calories, heart rate 134/165. I just wanted to warm up before stretching. I followed with Annie Pilates costochondritis yoga stretching, 20 minutes, 25 calories. I also did CDorner Spinal Mobility, 18 minutes, 24 calories. I also did the back pod.

Just finished STS Disk 24 Back and Biceps. Second night of really bad sleep but I was really determined to do it. I'm hoping to be up and out of here tomorrow by 7:30 to get a bit ahead of the crowds. Derek has Thanksgiving off, so we'll do a meal, and I'll probably follow the Lions on my sports app because it's been a traditional game with the Bears for as long as I can remember. But, I've always preferred baseball and basketball to football. And they changed so many rules in recent years that I don't even try to follow it. My family are huge hockey fans, but I've never gotten into that either. My parents have had season tickets for the local team and now for 25+ years to WMU, and my sisters family because her husband was an NHL ref, and the boys both played. Her husband and younger son still play locally. Her husband goes 5-6 mornings a week to skate. LOL

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Halloween 2024 cardio, and stretch/mobility.

Carolyn great job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body premix.

Judy great job with the Peloton rides and yoga. We lived mostly in the country when I was in school, so walking wasn't an option. When we lived in town we were still about a mile from the junior high and high schools, which themselves were several miles apart, so Mom generally drove us.

Valerie I hope your computer issues are all resolved now. I'm pretty sure I remember my Mom wearing snow pants to school, but they went to a tiny school, and before high school she went to a rural school and would have walked. Farm families tend to be practical about things like that and I'm guessing in some things the schools were more lax. My 4th grade teacher to this day still makes me wonder. Her husband was a farmer, but she had the most amazing dresses, bright colors, sparkly and I swear she never wore the same thing twice all year. When I was in third grade and saw her at an assembly I assumed, she was some important outside person. But, she was hands down the best teacher I ever had. When it was her turn for playground duty in the winter, she pulled out a snow mobility suit and put it on over her dress and out she went.

Hi Shannon.

Hi all. Happy Early Thanksgiving! I hope everyone will have a lovely day. We are going to have a small family gathering at my parents' house. Sorry to be MIA. I'm off work this week and have been doing a bunch of stuff outside. I had plans to go hiking today, but I had some plumbing issues which changed things. All is well now. It's a BEAUTIFUL day. Bummer I'm not up at the state park hiking. But at least my well is fixed and so is my toilet. :)

Saturday and Sunday I did some heavy duty lifting and hauling rocks, and trust me, that qualified as two days of functional total body work. Yesterday Mom and I went shopping, so I didn't get a workout in. I needed a rest day anyhow. Today I'm going to do an old one of Cathe's, just called High Intensity Interval Training. Not sure what series it's from. Needless to say, I will be doing some massive modifications.

I've loved reading all your stories about walking to school in the snow and stuff. We had about a quarter mile to walk to our bus stop. When we first moved back here, we had to walk over stepping stones in a creek. After we fell in the water a few times in the winter, when the rocks iced over with spray, Dad built us a bridge. But we never had to walk in the snow. When it snows in Arkansas, the entire state shuts down. Even with a little dusting. When it snowed, we got to stay home and play in it.

I'm getting ready to go outside again, but I just wanted to drop by and say hi to everyone. I may not be back until next week. I'm not sure about plans for tomorrow, but Friday I hope take that hike that was canceled today. Take care, and have a fabulous holiday!

I'm having trouble with my brand new computer where it wont connect. when we reboot the router its ok. I dont like to get two new things at the same time, computer and router, but we didnt have a choice. we have a ticket going with Dell so because its so new I feel like we need to get this ironed out in the first 3 months.

did a hike this morning. its a park hike but its kind of a tougher one. took 2 hrs 10 min. its got steep sections, very little of it is flat. its by the salt water. there were no birds except for 2 winter plumage loons we saw just as we were leaving. my knee is getting more noticeably a problem.
then Dh got a bad migraine right after we got home. we are going to look into more testing etc. these are pretty awful. its hard to sort out a bad migraine from a stroke.
you would think as far north as we are that WA would get a lot of snow and that everyone would be solid bad weather drivers. OMG. no. its near freezing point usually when it snows and generates an unholy mess of black ice. we are very hilly so it gets exciting in a hurry. some years are zero snow and other years we get a fair amount, so no telling ahead of time. The mountains get an absolute TON of snow. still the DOT could do a lot better. their road reports are useless. too many drivers speed and we all know how well brakes work on ice. when we are in MT times its usually much colder and snow is less slippery. plus the state knows how to clear and sand the roads effectively. most people ( not all) are better drivers. usually snow in montana is less difficult than in western WA. Idaho DOT does a better job than WA also plus like montana they have good fairly accurate road condition reports. WA does not report road conditions on their mobile app. State Patrol and DOT use X to report crashes and significant things in addition to their app. Musk made a mess out of that and everything else he touches. Better when it was Twitter.

shannon too funny..... nothing is slipperier than spray freezing on rocks. how long did it take to learn that lesson.

I'm not a spectator sport fan. I understand football the best but I dont enjoy it. dont like watching basketball or baseball or hockey.

Good morning. I didn’t get to work out yesterday. I probably won’t have time to do anything until Friday. Middle daughter and her family arrived yesterday.

Valerie, I’m sorry that you are having problems with the new technology. Working with two new items does complicate things. Nice job with the hike. Severe migraine headaches can be frightening. When I was in my teens I convinced myself that my migraines were from a brain tumor. I hope that your husband can get some relief.

Hello to Cathy, Judy, Diane Sue, and Shannon.

Carolyn technology isnt so much an issue, but the two new things inter connect. hard to tell where the problem lies. likely new computer is missing an update. today its working fine but yesterday it didnt.
he knows his headaches arent a tumor but they vary a lot and this one got me worried.

it got worse. did not act like his usual headaches. we ended up in the ER to rule out stroke. this hospital is the level 1 trauma center for the area. it was an amazing process. he was checked in and being tested in less than a half an hour after we arrived. wisked off to a room in <5 minutes at a breakneck pace by numerous people. he saw a doc in less than half an hour after having had blood drawn, iv line in, history taken, CT in progress. turned out its an atypical migraine, not a stroke .
I was very worried. didnt act like his usual migraines, didnt go away. got him to go when he was going to eat something could not control his jaw to chew. he had rejected going for several hours in slurred speech but that was it for me. I convinced him we would go for a drive "toward" the hospital. if he felt better we didnt have to go in. if you haven't been to an ER in a big city, that alone is an education. the security teams were stunning and were definitely needed. so much technical gear amazing they can walk. the population of people in and around the ER were, can I say, questionable. we were there for 4.5 hours mainly to get his BP down. just being in a hospital sent it spiking and . it didnt come down. all ok now but he will get some more tests done and needs better BP control.
its the first time in a long time I've driven at night. been passenger but not driven myself. its a partial reason for cataract surgery. I dont want to worry about night driving. it was fine.
I am so tired today I may do nothing or maybe some light weights.

happy turkey day everyone!. we will have a low key day at home and probably facetime with family.

Valerie, I’m so glad your husband is ok. I know migraines are most definitely not ok, but much better than a stroke. I know the feeling you must have had. A few years ago, I took mom to the ER because we thought she was having a heart attack. It was extremely high BP and probably a panic attack from something that happened earlier that day. Our ER isn’t level 1, but it was amazing how fast they reacted to a possible heart attack. Anyhow, back to you! I hope you and DH can relax, rest and recover over the next few days. Please take care.

Yesterday I did CDorner Hight Intensity Step #434 no breakdown basic step, 27 minutes, 155 calories, heart rate 145/182, 2,709 steps. I also did Flow with Mira, Thoracic Spine Mobility, 26 minutes, 33 calories. I finished with Jessica Smith 15 minute Fix Total Body, 16 minutes, 72 calories. This was quick paced and very light weight. I took a day off from the back pod because of time restraints. I got a lot of the upper back and rib work in Mira's Thoracic Spine.
My husband and I are getting some things done around the house and Christmas stuff out so short on time. Today we had to return Christmas lights from Amazon that was missing the timer. They replaced them overnight, so we had to make a trip to UPS, then we went out to eat, came home and decorated our pine tree in the front yard. Boy was it windy and cold!! Anyway I did CDorner Thigh Burner with Booty Bands, heavy fabric band, 31 minutes, followed by the back pod and then CDorner mobility challenge day 12 upper body stretch. That is it. I am working between MFP and My Net Diary since each has different special features. My Net Diary tracks, makes suggestions and e mails me results at the end of each week. I have not joined the premium in either, but MyNetDiary is a lot less costly at 59.99 per year of 8.99 a monthy.

Cathy, nice work on STS Disk 24 back and biceps. That is funny about your 4th grade teacher's outfits. I never had to walk to school till we came back to the US when I was in the middle of the 5th grade year. In England a cab picked me and some other children along the way to a bus stop. I got on a bus and rode to a military base, and 4th and 5th grade I transferred at the first base to another bus to go to another base for school. It always felt like the longest day ever. I think my parents should have put me in a British school like some others did. Better education in the long run. I was kind of behind when we came back. Never had PE on the base. Just the playground and things like tether ball or jumping rope.

Shannon, moving rock would be a major workout on its own. Things like plumbing issues sure can change plans abruptly. I cannot remember what High Intensity Training workout is. I can only remember a series with that name. You can tell I have not done the older workouts in a very long time. It seems like states that do not get lots of heavy snowfall are not very prepared when there is some. Oklahoma City has gotten better at planning ahead somewhat. Although they tend to close down schools etc quite often. They did it recently when we had heavy rain where visibility was bad.

Carolyn, relax and enjoy your family time.

Valerie, nice work on the hike yesterday. I hope that your husband is okay. I am glad that his blood pressure lowered finally. It sounds like you both need some rest.

Hello to Judy

Enjoy your Thanksgiving!!

I ended up having to cancel my PT appt. due to some automotive issues coming up, nothing serious but I just couldn’t get there. My car was in the shop that day getting some routine work done so Chris was going to take me but he was getting a low pressure warning in one of his tires and had to take that in to get it taken care of right away. The soonest I could reschedule was for December 9th. I’m going to do PT on my own until then. It seems to be getting a little better. Tuesday I did 30 minutes of light rowing and a 45 minute total body workout with light weights along with some pt work. Yesterday I did a 45 minute total body workout with light weights and more pt work. We are staying home today and having a quiet Thanksgiving.

Valerie-I'm glad your husband had a migraine and not a stroke. Definitely was the right decision to go to the ER. That must have been so stressful for both of you. I hope he feels much better and that you both can get some rest today.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body, express premix 2.

Diane Sue-Great job with the CDorner workouts, Flow with Mira, Thoracic Spine Mobility, and Jessica Smith 15 minute Fix Total Body.

Cathy-Great job with STS Disk 24 Back and Biceps.

Shannon-Great job moving rocks. That is definitely a workout!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I shopped yesterday. Left at 7:30 to try and get a jump on the crowds. I have a 5 mile drive out to the highway and I thought it was hilarious that as I merged onto the highway, to shop the day before Thanksgiving, my Spotify list started playing Highway to Hell! LOL Fortunately it wasn't prophetic. All three places were busier than usual, but not crazy, and no lines to check out. Though I pulled into Trader Joe's just as it opened and there were about 50 people heading in already.

Today I did a barre mix I put together from XTrain Legs and Lower Body Blast, and I added the extended stretch from P30.

Valerie I'm glad your DH is okay. That would be scary. Around here if you need an ER it's best to head for a smaller hospital as you'll get treated faster. And while Lansing has a level 1 with insurance the way it is, a lot of people in the area end up having to go to the Level III hospital which is understaffed.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

We could have gone to a close by walk in clinic. DH said he knew they would not hesitate and would have sent him to the hospital in an ambulance. better to drive yourself. its not far. maybe 20-25 miles. nothing complicated. they have a huge complex ER and to keep their level 1 certification they have to meet certain standards. the speed and efficiency of how everyone worked together was amazing. his BP is always a thrash. it goes up every medical procedure or office appt. when he takes more meds, there are problems the rest of the time. I don't want to do this again. we need a better plan. he has an appt monday and will also get a head MRI. this was OMG scary. the smaller ERs around here are not great. his docs all work out of this hospital. there is an extra level of tension since he is the doc and I am not. He knows way more than I do. I made the call. talked him into the right thing.
in a humorous note, he got a prescription for some anti anxiety medicine for the before MRI. the total is 2 pills, for $0.09. yes, 9 cents.

we did a park walk this morning for 1 hr 20 minutes. very pretty out this morning and not busy.

My new computer is not working right. it loses internet and wont reconnect. talking to Dell sometime today.

it seems that the learning curve needs to be repeated annually regarding snow driving. if its slick, all the brakes in the world wont help. how come half the population needs to learn that every year. I think thats worse in areas that dont get regular winter weather.
