Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/10/2024

Shannon what a bummer night!. yeah that guy is one lucky bugger. a dozen ways hat could have been a fatality. we were expecting a power out last night due to a windstorm but it didnt happen. surprise, no wind developed at least not here! we get quite a few power outs but usually not too long. this area has a lot of trees and trees fall, trees lose limbs. we are usually prepped ahead of time as the power out season approaches. flashlights, a camper we can use for backup that uses propane. but a surprise outage like that is a real PITA.

I did a yard walk later yesterday when rain stopped, up and downhill for 40 minutes. skipped therapy work yesterday except for a few stretches and some counter pushups. I could walk around the neighborhood but especially when its raining on and off, the yard is better. its a long wet trudge if the weather changes.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Upper Body 1, express premix. That was 50 minutes, 159 calories burned, average heart rate 107, and maximum heart rate 147.

Valerie, nice job with your yard walk and stretching. Our weather is rainy and a cool 50 degrees. Not a day for being outside.

Hello to Cathy, Diane Sue, Judy, and Shannon.

Good morning, ladies. Last night was much better than the previous one! I got my workout done early. I did Chiseled Lower Body Blast, but I turned all the lower body exercises into low impact cardio, so it was an hour of cardio. I did the premix that tacks on the Blizzard Blast. And then I went to bed at 7:00 and slept for 11 hours! I had no idea that was even possible, LOL. But it sure felt good.

Valerie - How long do you have to be careful to let your eye heal? Very fortunate that you have a nice hill in your yard, isn't it? I understand about prepping for power outages. That's how we've lived my entire life. We live in a rural area, and only within the past few years did Entergy finally update all the 1970's-age power lines. Ours used to go out for no reason at all, all the time. Now all we really have to worry about is ice storms, and of course the occasional idiotic driver.

Carolyn - Good job with the upper body work. I hope you have nice plans for staying inside today. It's a beautiful, crisp fall day here. FINALLY. Yesterday was really humid and drippy.

Hello to Cathy, Diane Sue and Judy.

shannon only a week and that's done. not very restrictive. no real heavy breathing, heavy lifting, or upside down work. I spun, rode outdoor bike, normal weight work.

my final eye check off yesterday and then shopping for DHs birthday. no formal workout, just therapy work later. yesterday weather was hideous. rain wind, traffic all balled up all day.

we used to be quite rural but a casino got built nearby and that changed everything. we still have lots of trees though, we're on 5 acres. we get power outs pretty easily but the PUD is prepared and forecasting is reasonably good so usually they dont last long. we got a small generator 2 years ago so we can run the freezer and fridge if its a longer outage.

this week there was a sad event near here. an arson fire at an old historical county park building. where DH and I first met, in a mountaineering first aid class taught there 50+ years ago. neither of us were from this area. had no outdoor knowledge about mountains or anything else. by chance we both had signed up for the class. lasted a year including classroom time and outdoor field trips. the group used the building as a gathering place for classes. last weekend someone broke into the building and started a fire. not sure it will get repaired. sad for us although we would not likely ever go back there. things have changed so much since then.

So yesterday morning, I was in full slow down mode and ended up just saying to heck with working out. But, I ended up totally rearranging my area in the basement. LOL Shopped today. Order Cathe's calendar and they have now added a free workout with the download link being sent to preorders when the calendars ship. I've never done a download so we'll see how that goes! Derek did his phone interview with the zoo in Bismarck. Definitely not his first choice but it's the only one he's heard from so far. It's only 25 hours a week, busy season can pick up hours in other area of the zoo, and she said that position usually works more than 25 hours. Pay was definitely higher than he expected. Certainly higher than where he's at, and only $3 an hour less than the highest paid keeper where he's at who has been there over 30 years! It's dreary drizzly here today which is much more of our usual November weather.

Shannon sorry to hear about your power issue. Did they even try to find the guy who caused it? I have a Kindle so reading at night is much easier now than when I did the flashlight thing as a kid. I was constantly threatened with the whole you'll ruin your eyes! Joke was on them because I didn't even need reading glasses until I was in my late 40's and still only need those. Plus I set my Kindle font big enough that I don't need glasses for it.

Hi all!

Today I did CDorner Lower Body Ball and dumbbells and stuck with 15# dbs throughout. They were going heavier. This was 33 minutes, 83 calories. I follower with CDorner Chair Stretch/mobility that she did this week, 34 minutes, 46 calories. Total time 67 minutes, 129 calories. Not sure how accurate, as my Garmin was showing no zone on the screen. The app was not showing right so I shut it down and then the app found it. The app said connected, but it was not finding stuff on the watch. I also did the back pod stuff.

Lower body was done in 3 rnds rnd 1 and 2 45 seconds, rnd 3 was all 30 sec with 15 movement and 15 hold with last exercise changed
rnd 1 and 2
3 pulse squat 15# dbs
stability ball fore arms on bear crawl position to straighten legs and back to bear
wall squat 15# dbs
kang squat; squat/dead/squat up15# dbs
stability lying on ball hip lifts 15# db
stability ball roll ins
glute bridge roll in
rnd 3
same moves, but 15 sec movement and 15 sec hold except the kang squat deadlifts 15# 60 seconds

I have an appointment with an orthopedic md this morning He has a sports medicine focus and is a knee specialist. After my Peloton ride on Monday my knee started bothering me more and Chris convinced me to make an appointment. From the symptoms I have, I’m suspecting a meniscus sprain or tear.
I preordered Cathe’s calendar today, along with socks and a resistance band. The free Glutes and Guns download that comes with the calendar and the socks being on sale this morning pushed me over the edge and I decided to place an order.

Carolyn-Great job with Jessica Smith’s Stride and Step and STS 2.0 Upper Body 1, express premix.

Cathy-Nice job organizing your basement. I need to do some organizing here too. I’m looking forward to the download. Hopefully my knee will be better by then and I’ll actually be able to do the workout, lol!

Diane Sue-Great job with CDorner Lower Body Ball and dumbbells and CDorner Chair Stretch/mobility.

Hi to Valerie & Shannon

Just finished Live In the Ring. I really like that one and added it to my favorites. I need to get into full on get rid of things mode. Starting small, and working my way up. And when Nick is home over Christmas I'm going to have a bunch of things for him to make decisions about. And if Derek moves out before then we're going to be chatting, too. Neither of them are going to be in a position to have a bunch of stuff needing to be moved because they are both in positions where they may be moving distances over the next couple years, but also having little space where they live for extra stuff.

Judy I hope your appointment went well and it isn't anything bad.

Diane Sue great job with CDorner Lower Body Ball and dumbbells and the stretch/mobility workout.

Today I did STS 2.0 Lower Body 1, 2 sets maximum. My time was 46 minutes with 163 calories burned, average heart rate 108 and maximum heart rate 143.

Shannon, I’m glad that you got some sleep. Eleven hours of sleep is amazing. Great job with Chiseled Lower Body. I modify the cardio to low impact in all of my workouts.

Valerie, that’s good news with your final eye check off.

Cathy, good job with Live in the Ring. I’m glad that you mentioned Cathe’s calendar. I need to preorder mine today.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Lower Body Ball and Dumbbells, and chair stretch/mobility.

Judy, going to the orthopedic doctor is smart. You don’t want to aggravate the knee problem.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Hello, everyone. What a lovely day here! And ... YES!! HRT WORKS!!! Three days without a hot flash. I don’t wake up and kick off the blankets. I can take hot showers again. I can wear my fuzzy robe in the evenings. Wow, life is good. I did STS 2.0 Giant Sets yesterday, followed by STS 2.0 core, the one with no equipment. I modified some of the plank work to planks on my elbows because doing it in a full plank kills my wrists.

Valerie – Congrats on the final eye checkup. But I’m sorry about the icky weather and crappy traffic. Ugh. My parents have a generator that runs on propane and powers the full house. One of the many things Dad squeezed out of the VA once they finally admitted to malpractice. So if we have a major outage, I’ll just camp out over there for a few days. I’m sorry about the arson event. It makes me think of the very old shack down the road from my house. Some little punks set it on fire a few years ago, and it burned to the ground. It was about ready to collapse anyway – it’s probably Civil War era, a tiny one-room house with a lean-to. Definitely nothing worth saving, but so sad, because I grew up with it, you know?

Cathy – Way to go on rearranging the basement, and good luck on getting rid of things. I love doing stuff like that. I hope Derek gets the Bismarck zoo job. I’m thinking he chose a tough career to find a job in. No, they didn’t try to find the guy who hit the power pole. No way really to track him down, since nobody was around to identify the truck or get a plate number.

Diane – It sounds like you are very carefully getting back into your workouts. I’m sure that feels good!

Judy – Best wishes for your knee! I hope nothing is torn. I won’t be getting Cathe’s calendar. I always buy one with horses. They are so beautiful.

Carolyn – Good work with STS 2.0 Lower Body. Yes, I modify everything to low impact too, although sometimes I throw in a few jumps just for the fun of it.

I did Rodney Yee’s Intermediate Yoga this evening. Well, sort of. I bought it long ago to see what he considers intermediate yoga. I’m going through my yoga dvd’s to see which ones I will keep. I suspected this would be one that is going to go, and I was right. Too many inversions, which I refuse to do, and lots of back bends. Some of those are ok or modifiable, but it’s still not worth doing again. But Rodney is a great instructor, and I have several more of his dvd’s. Well, have a good weekend, everyone, and I’ll see you Monday.

We did a road ride yesterday between rain storms for our usual 15 miles. today not much except for shopping, getting tires mounted. DH set up my new computer while I was gone. we sometimes work better apart!. its an inexpensive all in one desktop Dell. the tower and cords are all gone. I prefer the desktop for reading and shopping. not crazy about the laptop, and its pretty old and will need upgrading too but not as badly as my desktop did. this is a whole new system with just the screen and a wireless keyboard and mouse. I think it was about $600 total. really works nicely., I dont do gaming so this is very basic.

shannon yes, goodbye hot flashes. HRT works great. eventually you will taper off but it helps to get thru the temporary awfulness. I never found a dvd yoga workout I could use. good luck. I used to take classes and really liked it, but other instructors were too hard or too annoying.
judy hope your knee is ok. such a tricky joint I can say from experience.

i also ordered the calendar along with replacement green tubing. a handle broke on my old one.

My appointment went very well. I was diagnosed with IT band tendonitis, which is good news since I was prepared for something worse and for a lot of time off from working out. He prescribed PT, foam rolling and an NSAID. He said my joints and bones look good (they took x-rays of my back, hips and knees). I have a follow up appt. in 2 months. I might also make an appointment for him to check my shoulder, since I’ve had problems with it for a few years now. This afternoon I did some foam rolling for my IT band and it is very sore. I will probably hold off on working out until Monday then start out carefully and try to get back to a normal workout routine.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 1, 2 sets maximum.

Cathy-Great job with Live In the Ring. That sounds like one I would like.

Shannon-Great job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets, STS 2.0 core and Rodney Yee’s Intermediate Yoga.

Valerie-Great job with the road ride.

Hi to Diane Sue

Woke up and did an IMAX workout I created, just now finished STS Disk 19 Chest, Shoulders and Triceps. Clearly the workout manager thinks more highly of my abilities than my muscles do! I had a couple exercises that I had to back off a pound or two on. Well Derek will be heading to Bismarck in a few weeks. She called him just as he pulled in the drive last night. It was all set before he even came in the house. They are giving him a $500 moving stipend, which for a part time permanent position I certainly would not have expected. She's also going to be putting him in touch with his new team and they will get him info on finding housing. Normally they would want him there by mid-December, but with the holidays so soon after she said they'd figure something out. But, since Nick doesn't fly home until the beginning of January they won't get to see each other.

Judy that's very encouraging news from your doctor. So glad it wasn't something that required far more effort to correct.

Valerie glad you got your ride in between storms, and your new computer set up. DH and I definitely do better on things separately, but here I'm the tech person because he understands none of it, not the simplest thing. I rarely ever use our desktop and if it was just me, I wouldn't ever replace it as I use my laptop for all those things.

Shannon glad that the HRT is working for you! I've never had any luck with yoga workouts. I do like both the ones in STS 2, but in general I just get bored, which I have never understood, because I can do stretch videos without the same issue and yoga workouts are a lot of similar moves. It's a very weird dynamic.

Carolyn great job with STS 2.0 Lower Body 1. I hope that I find a use for the Cathe Calendar. In the early years, I always got them, but when they changed the way they were set up, I just didn't care for it.

DH has an aggressive approach to these things I used to set up the new computer but he does it now because he does it "better" . I used to get it done fine but thats not ok anymore. so he can have the unpleasant job. he's convinced everything I touch turns into electronic spaghetti . im tired of arguing about it. he can have the job. for example last night the system said it needed to update before it was shut down and not to turn it off while in progress. not unusual for a new system that has been on the shelf for who knows how long. I let it run, turned off the keyboard and mouse and went to bed. many people never turn off their systems at all. didn't think for a second this was some "high risk" maneuver. I was tired. this morning I said I left it on to do an update and you would think some natural disaster occurred on my watch. oh well.

shannon I was in costco for a long time yesterday while car was in tire center. peloton spinner for $1799. also a spinner from Nordic track for $499 that looked similar. dont know if that is a shopping option for you or if you still are considering one.

I have the Cathe yoga workouts that are ok although my yoga days are mostly done. my back should not flex that much. I tried several dvds/on line workouts. never found anything that worked. I went to classes locally for at least 10 years and did fine. anatomically, many yoga poses can be impossible depending on how your joints connect. I would need to break bones to do lotus or firelog. not happening. the people who are good want to impress you with their skills rather than teach anything.

I keep the cathe calendar above my desk and use it to record things I dont want to put on a small appt calendar. (never found phone apps useful). when to expect certain birds to arrive. birthdays. vacation stretches. which weeks are recycle pickup and which is not. closing dates for cc bill cycles. things useful to keep track of but I dont need to have in the limited space in a small paper calendar. phone apps dont work for me. I use sometimes but a small paper calendar is so much easier. and cathe's big one for the home things I track.

Today is my rest day. I went to the outdoor Farmer’s Market, Sprouts, and The Fresh Market this morning. It was cold but sunny, a nice morning for running those errands. The greens have really come in now. They had kale, collards, and turnips and they all looked good. I didn’t get any because I‘m not in the mood for all that picking and washing!

Shannon, it’s great that the HRT is working for you. Nice job with STS 2.0 Giant Sets Total Body and No Equipment Abs. I tried Rodney Yee, Shiva Rea, and a couple of other yoga DVDs, but I couldn’t get into it. Even the so called beginner dvds were too much for me. I decided that they didn’t provide enough actual instruction for me and seemed to assume that the user was more experienced. Travis Eliot’s Yoga Foundations was a good yoga guide for me. Yoga Relax was the first time that I tried one and liked doing it. Since then I have found a few others that are more appropriate for my beginner level that I can enjoy doing. It doesn’t matter how long I do yoga, I will still be a beginner.

Judy, that’s good news from your orthopedic appointment. I’m glad that it’s not more serious.

Valerie, nice job with the road ride. I hate setting up new technology! I have to do it myself, but I certainly don’t enjoy it.

Cathy, great job with your IMAX workout and STS disc 19, Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps. That’s wonderful news about Derek getting the job.
