Pentagenarians & Beyond: 11/10/2024

yesterday I did half of stacked upper body along with therapy. this morning we did a park walk for an hour with a break in the rain. nice out there, and warm, 55 degrees.

Yesterday I did Raw Tone It Up + some biceps curls that I did with 10# dbs, 34 minutes total,71 calories. I followed with CDorner Mobility Full Body 20 minutes, 33 calories. Total time 54 minutes, 104 calories. I also did the back pod therapy moves.
Today is a rest day. I still plan on getting in some stretching before bed. Busy week ahead and we are hosting our family Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday this week. Works around everyone's plans with other family.

Carolyn, nice job on Jane Adams Gentle Yoga today.

Valerie, nice work on half of stacked Upper Body and therapy yesterday and today's park walk. It got in the 60's here today. I hope it goes well with healing and you see without glasses. I had to start using readers, not a lot of correction, but they did finally give me progressive lenses. I definitely need glasses for reading. They make fine print on bottles so hard to read even with glasses. I do not know how things are now, as when I had the laser surgery which I had to wait years for them to fix my really bad astigmatism, they said it could not be done again. Things may have changed, and I am not sure how it will be when I have to have the cataracts removed.

Cathy, sorry you did not sleep well. I know how that is. Good job getting in a stretch.

This morning I did To the Mat no floorwork premix. Derek got home a little before 9 last night. He said he hadn't realized her birthday weekend was going to turn into him recreating his 8th grade field trip. LOL He even did some then and now comparisons on his Instagram.

Valerie glad you got a break in the rain to walk.

Diane Sue great job with Raw Tone It Up, biceps curls and mobility. Honestly, there are some labels that I swear are so tiny no one can read them. That's where a pic on my phone blown up comes in handy. :D

the rain is back . not cold, mid 50's but wet wet wet. winter in the PNW.
I'm doing well with the recovery process, there is nothing to it. I need to use a mixture of meds in an eyedrop 4x a day but that's all I do since day one. it will be a week tomorrow. I would have done the second eye sooner but there were vacations and holidays in there. if people are having a major correction in their vision they get surgery dates closer together. I can barely tell anything changed. I find I read easier with readers but do ok without them too. at first there was some flickering and occasionally there is a little cloudiness in one spot, the stitch line, but it goes away and will be gone after it heals. No need to be worried about this!

Today I did a timesaver from Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing which was 36 minutes and 249 calories burned. My average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate was 168.

Cathy, nice job with STS disc 1 Chest, Triceps, and Shoulders, Stretch Max 1, and To the Mat, no floor work.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Tone it + Bicep curls, and CDorner Full Body Mobility.

Valerie, nice job with half of Stacked Sets Upper Body, therapy exercises, and park walk. I’m glad that your recovery is going well.

Hello to Judy and Shannon.

Today I started with CDorner Step with Guy. He was leading and I was all over the place, so stopped after 10 minutes and pulled out Ice Low Impact Sweat Timesaver Step with warm up and stretch, total time for both 38 minutes, 188 calories, heart rate 129/149, 2,773 steps. I followed with Raw Yoga Stretch, 21 minutes, 33 calories. Total time 59 minutes, 211 calories. I also did the back pod and some therapy moves adding some tubing thoracic spine squeezes. Everything says you need to strengthen the thoracic spine to take the load off the chest.

Today I did an hour of Peloton rides. Tomorrow will be a rest day.

Cathy-Great job with Stretch Max 1, STS 1 Disk 16 Chest, Triceps and Shoulders and To the Mat no floorwork premix. I’m sorry about the sleep.

Valerie-Great job with Stacked Sets Upper Body, therapy exercises, and walking. I’m glad your recovery is going so well.

Carolyn-Great job with Jane Adams Gentle Yoga and Rock’m Sock’m Kickbox Timesaver.

Diane Sue-Great job with part of CDorner Step with Guy, Ice Low Impact Sweat Timesaver Step with warm up and stretch, Raw Yoga Stretch, and the back pod and therapy work.

Hi to Shannon

Good morning, ladies. What a lovely weekend! I was off yesterday – my employer gives Veterans’ Day as a holiday. I was going to check in, but instead, I spent the entire day outside, raking leaves and walking. Let me tell you, it was soul food!

Let’s see … workouts. Friday was Athletic Training from Cathe’s first Low Impact Series. Saturday was a rest day – I visited with a friend I hadn’t seen since last year. Sunday was a five mile walk, plus finally removing the poles from my back yard. I did some “heavy duty helping,” but the main work was done by my dad on a trackhoe (ETA - not to be confused with his track chair! Think backhoe, bulldozer, heavy equipment). That’s an awesome piece of machinery, for sure. Yesterday, of course, was lots of walking again.

Judy – Great job with the long Peloton ride! Sounds like your rest day is well-deserved.

Carolyn – Good work with your yoga and kickboxing this weekend.

Cathy – I’m sorry you didn’t sleep well the other night. I know that’s rough. I hope things were better last night.

Valerie – I’m sure your park walk was nice. But I’m laughing at 55 being warm. I’ve been in shorts the past couple of days, it’s still 70 and above during the day. Totally disgusting, even for Arkansas. By now, fall should be well established. Very glad your eye is healing without a hitch!

Diane – I hope all your planning and stuff for your Thanksgiving dinner goes well. I’d say yep, strengthening the spine is very important, no matter the reason. I hope you will be pain-free soon.

This morning I did an All Out Low Impact Hiit mix and STS Disk 18 Back and Biceps. Hoping Derek's car is done today, so I can have mine back, even if I don't have anywhere to go until Thursday. LOL

Shannon I'm glad you were able to enjoy a day outside. We are past what I consider warm weather, 55+, but we also aren't supposed to have a day time high at 32 or below until the third week of December! That's so crazy. And it is not going to be a white Christmas. If it's going to stay mild, we need it to last into the second week of January when Nick flies home. We do not need a repeat of the nightmare from a couple years ago when he got stuck in GR overnight. Great job with Athletic Training and the 5 mile walk.

Valerie so glad that your eye is healing well.

Carolyn great job with Rock’m Sock’m Kickboxing.

Diane Sue great job with Ice Low Impact Sweat Timesaver Step, yoga and the therapy exercises.

Judy great job with the Peloton ride.

yesterday I did 20 min spinning, 15 min on the elliptical and therapy along with tricep workout. Im not following any rules here and just do a series of whatever upper body moves that fit into what Im doing. dips, tricep pushups, regular counter push ups and a few sets of curls, side raises. my upper body is looking better and I don't get sore with these mini workouts. I do a little bit of something every day.

shannon, DH and I follow this topic. so sad to see the last very slim chances to curtail global warming going away. people wont make changes needed. we ( me included) simply will not do it, and especially following last weeks election, the climate change deniers are in control. the consequences will be dire and IMHO inevitable. (we will extinct ourselves!) I wont get rolling here because it gets political quickly and we try to keep most of that out of our talks here.
locally we can see changes in our lifetime. glaciers are going away, tree lines are moving higher, water levels rising, bird and insect numbers dropping dramatically. ice fields have disappeared. scientists have been yelling this for decades but no one has the agency to force changes. so we will get what we get. we used to drive 20 miles and had to stop and clean the dead squashed bugs off the windshield, now we can drive 700 miles and never clean it once.

ordered a new desktop computer yesterday. my old system is not going to be supported in 2025 so its time to upgrade. its getting slow and needs to be updated a couple times a week and one of these days it just will not boot up at all. I get busy circle and nothing else.

I think we may get a week of fall weather ... at least that's what the forecast looks like for the time being. I'll enjoy it while I can. It sure is nice outside. Mid-60s, low humidity and a lovely breeze. I opened some windows.

Cathy - All Out is a great workout. I hope you get your car back too! There's a definite since of security knowing that you have a car at your disposal. Wow - your temps usually drop below freezing in November? Awesome. Although I don't think I'd actually survive a true northern winter, LOL.

Valerie - That's a very good idea, the way you are working in strength training, especially since you're still adjusting to the limitations from your fused vertebra. Understood about keeping this place non-political! :) No worries. But siiiighhh... articles like the one I posted are just so dang sad. Although the thought of fewer bugs down here in the south is kind of pleasant - we sure haven't noticed that change yet. There are a few that I wouldn't mind being extinct. Ticks and chiggers, for starters.

shannon, It will get everyone's attention if the gulf stream shuts down. its what gives Europe its mild predictable climate. there are regular global circulation patterns that govern climate and fish. if sea levels rise a few more feet which they will do and are doing already, most coastal cities will not be liveable. it will displace a billion people( at least) worldwide. where are they going to go? global climate changes and rising sea levels and probably plenty of things we aren't aware of yet. worse fires, droughts, too much rain elsewhere. more intense storms like hurricanes and tornados. most of civilization depends on how predictable our climate has been for a few thousand years. all that is threatened. we count on it to grow crops that feed way too many people. ha ha, yes the bees moths and butterflies go away but the ticks, mosquitos, and cockroaches thrive. but ask me if I will give up my car or stop heating my house and I will say no. we drive a fuel efficient car but thats as far as we've been able to go.

so far we are having a fairly normal november. we get very wet, not hard rain but light rain for a long time. usually not real cold here but some years there is a polar vortex and it gets cold.

Today was another of my husband’s doctor’s appointment with no time for my workout.

Diane Sue, nice job with part of CDorner Step, Low Impact Sweat, and Raw Yoga Stretch.

Judy, nice job with an hour of Peloton rides.

Shannon, great job with Athletic Training, walking five miles, and working outside. I’m glad that you had a good long weekend.

Cathy, great job with All Out Low Impact HiiT and STS disc 18 Back and Biceps.

Valerie, great job with 20 minutes of spinning, 15 minute on the elliptical, and therapy and tricep exercises.

Have a wonderful day everyone.

Well, ladies, I hope your night was better than mine. Some dude came around the corner too fast at about 9:00, flew off the road and hit the guy wire to a power pole. The force snapped the guy wire and as well as the power pole - in two places, broken clear through. The top part of the pole was dangling from the power lines still attached to it. Needless to say my power went out. It was the pole where my line goes from the main one to my house.

The guy drove off. He got lucky. If he'd hit the pole, he would have been dead. So I called Entergy. A truck arrived about 10:30. I went out to talk to him. He assessed everything and left. I couldn't go back to sleep - I was way too awake after going outside twice. So I got up and read for a few hours by flashlight. Then the repair crew arrived at about 1:30. They had to shut the main power line down to work on it, so from about 2 until 6, everyone's power in the area was out. But Entergy worked all night, set the pole and got the power back on.

I guess I'll be running on fumes today - I managed to get about two hours of sleep. Ugh. But before all that mess happened, I did have a good afternoon and evening. I lifted weights on my own, and then did Icy Core #1.

Valerie – I figure the mosquitos and fire ants will also survive. Ever stepped on a fire ant nest? Don’t. They are vicious buggers. I’m fortunate to be able to work from home and so not need to spew fumes out of my car every day, but yeah – I sure did miss my electricity last night, and I don’t want to give it up.

Carolyn – Is your husband okay? I hope the appointment was a regular checkup or something. You don't have to answer - I don't mean to be nosy.

Good morning to Diane, Cathy and Judy.

Oh hey. I subscribe to Arnold Schwarzenegger's newsletter. This morning he included this article. I thought it was pretty cool:

Can You Avoid Cognitive Decline?

Imagine if the key to protecting your brain was hiding in the weight room. Stop dreaming because this one is reality.
Recent research found that regular resistance training can promote brain health and may help delay or reduce the onset of cognitive decline.
Scientists focused on different types of training — everything from brain exercises to pumping iron — to determine the protective effects on adults older than 55. They found that weight training acted like a protective shield around the hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with memory and learning. This brain region is crucial in resisting cognitive decline, and maintaining health is essential for staving off dementia.
It appears that resistance training can enhance “hippocampal plasticity”—the brain’s ability to adapt and change, which is why it leads to better cognitive health.
And that’s not all. Other research has found that strength training also reduces amyloid plaques, which are associated with Alzheimer’s disease.
If you want to upgrade your brain protection, the participants saw benefits by performing a total of 90 minutes of resistance training per week, split between two to three workouts.

This morning I did Jessica Smith’s Stride and Step, 30 minutes, 197 calories, average heart rate 128, and maximum heart rate 164. I did my virtual WW meeting after that, now I’m off to the grocery store.

Shannon, how awful that someone knocked out your power with his bad driving. I’m glad that it’s restored now. It’s hard to function with lack of sleep. My husband’s appointment was a follow up with the primary care doctor. He sees a neurologist, cardiologist, and primary care. Some months it seems that doctor’s appointments are all that we do and this was one of those months.

Hello to Valerie, Judy, Cathy, and Diane Sue. Have a nice day everyone.
