Pentagenarians & Beyond: 01/05/2025

Good morning, ladies. Well, I made a flying trip into town, which means I was able to squeeze in a workout when I got home. Yay! I did RWH: Plyo HiiT, premix that combines 1 & 2. Of course I did mostly low impact modifications, because no way am I doing those good old seriously high impact jumps that Cathe loves. I did allow myself a few moderate impact moves though, just for the fun of it.

It's a darn good thing I went to the store yesterday and didn’t wait. Shelves were already starting to empty. Some local forecasts say we may be in the range of 8 inches now, with areas in the Ouachita Mountains that might see a foot. Fortunately I am not anywhere near the mountains. And then once the snow is done, it looks like normal Arkansas winter returns and we will see highs in the mid-40s. Good. The snow will melt quickly.

I bought pee pads for Sara. My plan is to shovel an area for her and cross my fingers that she will use it. Sometimes she needs space to find exactly the right spot. Sigh. She’s such a high maintenance little punk. So I’ll try to shovel a big enough area, even though she’s a tiny little thing. The pee pads are for Plan B, if needed. I will lay several out in the garage for her. It’ll still be cold, but at least she won’t have to deal with the snow. Of course she’s never stayed in the garage, so it might not actually work. We shall see.

Cathy – good job on the quick pivot when Cathe switched to weights. I like the lower body disc workout too. I seem to go back and forth on which foot I balance better on. My feet like to challenge me and keep me guessing. Oh man, I feel sorry for Derek! I sure hope he found warmer clothes. My nephew, who was born and raised in Arkansas, decided to have an adventure after he graduated high school and is now in Laramie, WY. He’s dealing with similar temps, which is quite something to get used to. Oh yes, I remember you told me about your double Achilles problem once. How miserable!

Judy – yeah, way too much snow, LOL. Maybe the forecast will be wrong, but I doubt it. All of the local stations are saying generally the same thing. I’m really glad your leg is okay! That’s excellent news.

Carolyn – Don’t you just love LMR total body? It’s my favorite of the series.

Valerie – Bummer about the lack of snow. Do you want some of ours? I’ve often thought snowshoeing sounds fun. I wouldn’t like skiing though. I’d fall and hit a tree or something. I’m sorry your ankle and wrist hurt. Is that more arthritis? Yeah, freezing fog is one of the great joys in life. And let’s not forget freezing rain that weighs down the power lines and then SNAP, there they go. No worries – I do stay home. My current job is work from home, hallelujah. In my previous jobs where I had an hour commute, I flat out told my bosses that I don’t drive in snow, and I’d take a vacation day if needed. I’m north of Little Rock, and we often get more snow than they do, so the office might be open, but I couldn’t get out of my driveway.

Diane – I agree, they do sensationalize the weather. But it looks like we are going to get several inches, one way or the other this time. My previous dog loved the snow too, and we would go on long walks up in the woods. I miss her. Yes, I guess not too many docs choose to go into rheumatology. It sounds like your primary doc has more sense than the rheumatologist!

This morning I did P30 Low Impact Hiit and LMR Upper Body Balance Discs. I found the upper body more challenging and more room for improvement than the lower body, but I tend to do extra balance stuff for lower, so that's not really surprising. Taking Nick to the airport later to catch his 3:00 flight. Hope everything is timely because just like last time, which worked out, he's working tonight.

Diane Sue, my issue with the unknowns is the lives because the description isn't always thorough. One plus of using OnDemand for my workouts is that when you choose one of the regular workouts, it shows you all the chapters so you can see what's coming. If I'm doing an old LIVE, it's really a pain to track down a description in the forums.

Valerie I made suggestions to Derek. Including looking into Carhart for boys, men's don't go small enough. Back a long time ago when my Dad was doing construction, that's what he wore along with a layer under it. I know he hit the stores last weekend, and you'd think in Bismarck they would certainly sell warm clothing, but he never said what he got. I know I've seen keepers wearing the Carhart Bibs, the zoo gives them coats to wear with the logo, so he has that for outer layer. Sorry your ski trip had to turn into snowshoeing. Michigan is on the low side for snow this winter. We've yet to have to shovel as we don't get more than 2-3", and mostly only an inch. While most of the ski resorts are open I think a lot are making snow, and it would also be hindering cross country though maybe not as much. I know the one in Marquette hasn't had a real snow fall since before Christmas.

Judy good that you can stay in. I have to go out today and tomorrow but that's not much time outside. I keep telling myself to bundle up and go walk in the yard, but I haven't been!

Hi Carolyn and Shannon.

Today I did Glutes & Guns. I really enjoyed this workout and will be doing it regularly to get back into doing more challenging lower body workouts again. The heaviest weight I used was 35 lbs for the sumo squats and 40 lbs for deadlifts. I used 12 lb dumbbells for everything else.

Carolyn-Great job with LMR Functional Total Body.

Diane Sue-Great job with LMR Upper Body and Functional Mobility.

Shannon-Great job with the RWH: Plyo HiiT premix. Good luck with the snow!

Cathy-Great job with P30 Low Impact Hiit and LMR Upper Body Balance Discs. I hope Nick has a good flight.

Hi to Valerie

Today I did KCM’s Cardio Quick Fix workout one, 26 minutes, 182 calories, average heart rate 131, and maximum heart rate 151. I went to the store after my WW meeting to get a few essentials. I didn’t want to wait until tomorrow because I know that people will all over the stores in anticipation of Friday’s snow and winter precipitation.

Valerie, I’m sorry about the poor ski conditions. Good that you were prepared with the snowshoes.

Diane Sue, great job with LMR Upper Body and Functional Mobility. I like both of those workouts.

Shannon, great job with RWH Plyo HiiT one and two. I am originally from north Louisiana, Ouachita Parish. Your mention of the Ouachita Mountains made me think of home. My grandparents lived in southern Arkansas and I spent a lot of time there, but I’ve never been to Little Rock.

Cathy, great job with P30 Low Impact HiiT and LMR Upper Body Balance disc. I want to try the balance disc soon.

Judy, great job with Glutes and Guns.

Have a great day everyone.

Today I did Ice Low Impact Sweat workout #2 stopping at the stretch and added on the LMR low impact cardio bonus, 40 minutes, 213 calories, heart rate 132/169, 3328 steps. I finished with CDorner Mobility stretch to relieve tension. This was a good one, It really helped my tight sore areas from head to toe. 33 minutes, 46 calories. Total time 73 minutes, 259 calories.

Good morning. Yesterday I did Flex Train. I haven’t done that one in a long time. It was fun.

I have a compressed nerve in my right arm. It’s not pleasant. This is self-diagnosed, but fairly obvious, since I have that awful pins and needles pain/itching feeling that is the hallmark of nerve problems. I’ve been dealing with it for a while. My vacation helped a lot, but now that I’m back on the computer, it is already getting worse. I have an appointment with my primary next week, but she will probably refer me to a specialist, so you know how it goes – more waiting.

It looks like our “storm of the century” is delayed a bit. I was hoping to watch the snow fall today as I work. But most of it is going to hit overnight, so we will wake up to a winter wonderland, LOL.

Cathy – I’m sure the upper body balance discs was challenging. Lots of plank work on the discs, right? That would be hard. I haven’t tried it yet because I just don’t think my arthritic wrists would like it. Did Nick’s flight leave on time so he make it to work?

Judy – Good work with Glutes and Guns. And good luck getting back into harder lower body work! It’s definitely worth it, but I hope it doesn’t mess up your leg.

Carolyn – Well, hello to another Southerner! I’ve never been to Louisiana. I’m as far south as I want to go, LOL. Where are you now, that you’re going to get snow tomorrow too? I’m glad you made it to the store before the craziness begins.

Diane – I’m glad the CDorner stretch helped you. A good stretch is well worth the extra time for sure. I did a little extra myself, after I finished Flex Train.

Hello to Valerie!

DH and I are fussy about where we ski, which is old logging roads. we do not enjoy places with lots of people and preset tracks. there aren't many of those roads left because logging is less these days and we need to be able to get to them. most are minimally maintained. if trees fall, you either cut and clear the tree yourself, or you cant get to the snow level. snow is at 3000 feel elevation right now. we always carry a chainsaw but its much better if we dont need to do that. sometimes by the time you clear the road, youre too tired to ski! xc skiing is way different than downhill skiing. its more like hiking with maybe a fast ride back down. totally different sport. yesterday even the snowshoeing was not good. needed to go higher, but thats as high as this road went. tons of snow up a little higher, but we have to be able to get there.

cathy , another benefit to long johns. thin stretchy material that rolls up. insulated winter pants are hard to find short inseams. my DH can do a 30 at the longest. often pants have closures, zippe etc that makes shortening them impossible. you can make any normal pants "winter ready" with long johns and can take them off if its too warm. Costco often has inexpensive synthetic ones. DH has worn womens long johns that come in shorter lengths. most long johns dont have a fly anyway. I havent shopped for them in years so not sure what you can get these days.

had some trees cut down yesterday and it was a total mess. the guy wasyoung and reckless. DH is careful and didnt feel ok dropping this tree for good reason. dh is assessing what to do with it now. its down, but a long process.

Today I did LMR Functional Upper Body, 50 minute, 123 calories, 98 average heart rate, and 123 maximum heart rate.

Diane Sue, nice job with Low Impact Sweat + LMR Cardio bonus and CDorner Mobility Stretch.

Shannon, nice job with Flex Train. I’m sorry that you are having problems with your arm. Your winter weather is headed our way and expected to be here in Georgia around 4:00 tomorrow morning. The Atlanta area will get some significant snow in some areas, and more snow and sleet mixed in other parts. I’m not looking forward to it.

Hello to Cathy, Valerie, and Judy.

We rode our neighborhood again on mt bikes. it was cold earlier but now its almost balmy... 50 degrees! our ride is 5 miles with big hills.
sorry for the pending bad weather. we have had plenty in the past but not much so far this year. its been very wet and cool but not sure if we even had a formal freeze yet. some outdoor plants are still blooming. not beautifully but flowers in january...... calendula. now witch hazel is blooming. also sarcococcoa. its an evergreen shrub with little white unimpressive flowers. gives off amazing perfume in cold mornings. seems ridiculous but lovely fragrance.

shannon I have wrist and hand arthritis too. I probably have arthritis in every damn joint but my left wrist is a big trouble spot so I sympathize. so far ai can do most things but I wear a brace at night now.

its awful watching what is happening in CA. Most of our family is in California but not in the LA area so no one at immediate risk. seeing what can happen so quickly and so uncontrollable is beyond scary. its also scary since little is known about how these fires started. natural causes are bad enough but if these were set? no idea how anyone will every be able to be sure and right now just controlling them is the main thing.

Quick check in again. It has snowed all day. My husband was off and we went out to see about getting a new cell phone carrier and replace my husbands phone. One did not have any Samsung phones and another was closing early when we got there so we have to wait. Anyway, I did CDorner Power Step 28 minutes, 189 calories, heart rate 135/164, 3,421 steps. I did this workout not long ago and liked the fast pace and no fancy footwork. I did do the modifiers on the on and off step jacks and the 50 jacks at the end. I wanted to do all of LMR Functional Pilates fusion but needed to clean the snow up for Walmart to deliver groceries. I did the Timesaver all foam roller which is most of the workout, 24 minutes, 39 calories. The other parts are some mini ball work and fabric band moves. Total time was 52 minutes, 228 calories.

Good morning! WOW! SNOW! So, I originally didn’t want it, but now that it’s here, I feel like a little kid again, LOL. It is so incredibly beautiful. So far we have about seven inches and are supposed to get two to three more. I went on a walk this morning, even though I’m supposed to be working. I’m sure my boss will forgive me. I can just tack on an hour this afternoon. I went up in the woods, and around the perimeter of our property. It took me about an hour of seriously hard walking. I’m pooped! I’m saying I got in a cardio and leg workout for the day. Yesterday I did Chiseled Lower Body Blast – the premix that adds the Blizzard Blast. I changed all lower body exercises to cardio for a full hour of low impact cardio.

Valerie – XC skiing sounds fun and challenging. I probably could have used some snowshoes this morning, LOL. I was just plowing through in my boots. Good luck with the trees. Do you and DH have to cut them up and split the wood, now that the young dude got them down? Okay, any sort of flowers in January is just plain weird. I’m sorry you have so much arthritis. My mom is like that, and since it’s hereditary, I’m probably headed that way. You do a great job staying fit and active!

OMG yes, the fires in California are awful. The pictures look like something out of a sci-fi Armageddon movie. I can’t believe the devastation.

Carolyn – How’s the weather? I know it’s hard to deal with, but I hope you can enjoy the beauty of it. And I sure hope you don’t get much ice. That’s just plain nasty.

Diane – Yes, I was watching radar yesterday, and Oklahoma was getting a ton of snow. I hope it doesn’t cause you too many problems. Will Walmart actually deliver in this weather?

Hello to Judy and Cathy.

Shopped yesterday. Nick's flight was on time and smooth. Fort Worth's predicted storm seems to have mostly fizzled. They were saying potential almost an inch of ice and 5" of snow, but when he went to work last night he said it was just slushy. This morning I did a Low Impact Cardio I put together that is mostly step, but has a floor hiit section. Then I did Live Total Body Band and Glide. It was a good overall workout and the core section at the end I found very challenging. It would make a great travel workout. I'm starting a list for my potential trip in May.

Judy thanks commenting on the Calendar download workout. I need to figure out if I download it to my laptop how to get it on a USB for the Roku. I'm pretty sure the adapter I had for the old TV with my laptop has what I need on it, but I can't find the darn thing.

Shannon sorry to hear about your compressed nerve. Hopefully you can get some help for it. I think the upper body balance disk would be hard on the wrists. Most of it you either have hands on the mat or hands on the disk. You got more snow that we've had from one system since sometime last winter! Places in Michigan are making snow for skiing! Walking in that much snow is definitely a workout. The fires in California are so scary. Wildfires scare me more than anything. Most of the ones in Michigan are up north in low population areas, and don't generally come anywhere near the size of the ones out there. I can't imagine trying to flee that type of fire with the winds pushing it so hard.

Diane Sue shoveling snow definitely counts as a workout. Years ago when I shopped for Shipt for awhile it was crazy the type of weather people with bigger vehicles were willing to deliver in, especially knowing that around here tips were generally minimal at best.

Valerie I hope your family in CA continues to be safe from the fires. Not only are they incredibly scary, but it's January!

Carolyn I hope you weren't too impacted by the snow.

Well, my disabled father insisted on getting out in the snow to take care of cattle that he has no business owning in the first place (veeerrrry long story there), and he fell. My 75-year-old mother and I had to get him off the ground. She called me, and I had to run down to the barn. HUGE eyeroll. Mom is going to have a firm talk with him. I hope he finally listens to someone other than himself. Yes, I'm pretty mad. I shouldn't call my father names, but he was a complete idiot.

Cathy - I'm glad all is well with Nick. I have a friend in Dallas, and she says it's a nasty mix of rain, ice and snow. But I guess the airport keeps things pretty clear. How much snow does your area of Michigan usually get? I am imagining you up to your eyeballs, so it's pretty surprising to hear that we have you beat way down here in the south.

No one in our family lives in LA. we have family a little north of there, and also east in the central valley and sacramento . these areas dont get santa ana winds. who knows who is at risk anymore? we in WA feel like we are at risk too. the rain makes great growing conditions and when the brush dries out in summer fires happen in the wettest areas. there is a blindness thinking you are in a no risk area. SIL and BIL live on the oregon coast, an extremely soggy area and they had fires close by too. the wind is the killer thing in LA. even though it was predicted, how could anyone plan for anything like this? especially oif arson was involved. not sure what can be proved vs speculation about the causes.

we get very intense winds in montana at our house due to the topography. we built the house fire resistant and have a wide buffer of gravel but if the wind is blowing at 60+ mph, embers can fly for miles. the 30 feet is looking pretty puny. there are no trees or shrubs anywhere near, just low growing sage and grass but conditions could get dire there too. it gets dry and the wind blows. lightning too.

snow and ice where it doesnt happen often is sure makes a mess. shannon that is too bad about your father. really hard to tell people they should not do "whatever" anymore due to their age. at first I thought traction devices for his boots. then I thought if he cant get up by himself, maybe its time to move to a less challenging place or let the cows go. hope he's not injured and will listen to reason. I doubt it. good luck on this one.

This morning I did JS 15 Minute Calorie Burst, 15 minutes, 115 calories, average heart rate 135, and maximum heart rate 149. Then I did LMR Mobility Fusion, mobility basics timesaver. We had rain and sleet starting around 4 a.m. then the snow started around 7:00. The snow stopped but more rain/sleet is expected and things are starting to ice over. Ice is the worst. I made some blueberry muffins and hamburger buns trying to get ahead of any power outage that might happen. I also started dinner early since I need the oven for that too.

Valerie, nice job with your neighborhood ride. The fires in California are horrible. The high winds and blowing fire is something I could not have imagined. When I heard that someone was arrested for starting one of the fires I couldn’t believe it.

Diane Sue, nice job with CDorner Power Step and part of LMR Functional Pilates Fusion.

Shannon, great job with Chiseled Lower Body Blast. I’m sorry about your father. I understand your frustration because I go through similar situations with my husband. He thinks that he can do what he has always done, then is surprised when negative things happen such as a fall.

Cathy, great job with your low impact cardio workout and Live Total Body Band and Glide. I’m glad that Nick‘s flight was good. Travelers coming through Atlanta haven’t been as lucky.

Hello to Judy.

Yesterday I did a 45-minute Peloton Walk. Today I did a 30-minute Peloton ride and 45 minutes of yoga and stretching.

Carolyn-Great job with Cardio Quick Fix workout one, LMR Functional Upper Body, JS 15 Minute Calorie Burst and LMR Mobility Fusion, mobility basics timesaver. I read about all the flights that were cancelled or delayed due to the weather in Atlanta.

Diane Sue-Great job with Low Impact Sweat, LMR Cardio bonus, CDorner Mobility Stretch, CDorner Power Step and LMR Functional Pilates Foam Roller Timesaver.

Shannon-Wow, you really got a lot of snow. Great job with Flex Train and Chiseled Lower Body Blast. I’m sorry about your father. That is hard to deal with.

Cathy-Great job with your Low Impact Cardio and Live Total Body Band and Glide. I think you will like the Glutes and Guns workout. How much snow did you get today? We’ve gotten an inch or two so far.

Valerie-The fires are so scary. I can’t imagine how stressful it would be to live in those conditions. It’s good that they arrested someone. If there are other people involved hopefully they will be caught too.

Today I did LMR Functional Total Body skipping a few exercises and adjusting some, 53 minutes, 123 calories, heart rate 90/128 followed by Raw Yoga Stretch 14 minutes, 26 calories. Total time 67 minutes, 149 calories. I need to check out the timesaver that I think skips a lot of the core work. This work out does not seem hard, but it sure has set off some pain the other two times I have done it. I am not to fond of moves that are combos that hit more than one body part.

Shannon the walk in the woods sounds like a good workout with the snow. I bet it was pleasant and rather peaceful. Good job on the Chiseled Lower Body Blizzard Blast combo yesterday. I thought maybe Walmart would say no to delivering the order, but it came right on time. I shop delivery most of the time and get the same delivery drivers a lot. This one was a woman by herself. I was a bit worried about her carting a 32 bottle pack of water up the driveway and walkway. Walmart uses Spark delivery drivers around here. I find the older I get that I realize aging people do not want to give up the ability to do things they have always done. Do you live close to your parents? I have not done the upper balance disc bonus myself because the moves look like they make my ribs hurt more with the costochondritis and I have to be careful with my wrists, but too much time on them causes stinging and pain. They were pretty bad for a while and I was wearing compression gloves to bed. I hope you can get some help with yours.

Cathy nice work on the Low Impact Cardio that you put together and Live Band and Glide workout. I am always amazed when I need something right away and I get express delivery and I have had them shop my items and arrive at my house in 30 minutes. I always tip. It is optional though. I image there are a lot of people that do not tip.

Valerie, that is good you have your built fireproof and keep the brush away. My husband has family in California. Not in Los Angeles area though.

Carolyn good job on 15 minute JS calorie burn and LMR mobility basic timesaver. Good idea getting some things done just in case there is a power outage.

Judy, great job on yesterday's 45-minute Peloton Walk and today's 30-minute Peloton ride and 45 minutes yoga and stretch.

This morning I did Live Boxing Hiit Express and LMR Lower and Upper Body Balance Discs. I'm going to have to suck it up and change my OnDemand password, which I will then have to change in the Roku, so that I can create workouts, because I want to put these together and add a stretch. And I would love to know how it is that the password stopped working on my phone, iPad and laptop, but still works on the Roku!

Shannon I know all about parents making bad choices. We get very frustrated with them, but they are in control and woe be the person who tries to convince them otherwise. Around here we actually average under 50" of snow a year. It really varies around the state. The section of the northern lower that is the nemesis of everyone who has to travel from downstate to the UP averages 148" and always seem to manage to get their snow during commute times for college breaks. But, places in the UP get over 200". Last year and so far this year have been low years. Two years ago, Derek's junior year at NMU in Marquette they had to cancel school for a day during finals week in MAY. We all had to rearrange our hotels etc. It was crazy.

Diane Sue I have already told my sons that I will be a VERY stubborn old person determined to keep doing things. LOL But, I'm also doing everything I can to stay in shape which is not what the rest of my family does. My grandparents lived to be 86, 96, 96 and 98, but 3 of them ended up in assisted living home, 2 in wheelchairs. My parents are both headed that way and I'm determined to do everything I can to avoid it. The main reason I quit Shipt is because people rarely tipped, or tipped low, and out here there were delivery distances that could take a 1/2 an hour to get to and then you're half an hour from the store, most shops don't have many items, so for the time it took you to shop, and drive (using your vehicle) you often made $7 which was about the minimum Shipt paid with no tip. The people making the money are those in populated areas. And Shipt has or at least had a crazy rating system, so unless you maintained a perfect 5 rating you weren't offered the best shops.

Judy we got 2-3", but we may get more get more tomorrow-Tuesday. We need the sun to come out now (it's trying) to help clear the snow. The plow went by us earlier.

Carolyn I sure hope you don't lose power. My sister is leaving on a cruise tomorrow out of Tampa that they are local to, but people flying in or driving a distance are freaking out because they aren't sure they can get there in time to board.

Valerie those winds in CA are crazy scary and wildfires are so scary.

diane sue we knew the build spot was seriously windy. the contractor built "reinforced" wind proof as possible. siding and roof are fire resistant. we positioned it so the garage is a wind block. we graveled 30 feet around and have no plants, wood piles, storage that could ignite. the propane tank is underground. there are no trees anywhere nearby but its grassy/sage, dry plains habitat. when the wind blows its very difficult to be outside. when you open the car door you need to look which way the wind is coming from and use caution. downhill from us is not as windy but nothing was for sale there. there is a creek downhill with trees but its a long way. given the "right" conditions, about anything can burn so we did what was possible.

I grew up in Wisconsin. northern Wisconsin used to get more snow. I was told 2 story homes there were built with an upper level door so people could come and go that way when snow drifts blocked the main floor. I don't know if that was true or not. friends there say "Wisconsin winters are not what they used to be" and that's since 1950. we got plenty of snow then. nothing was ever cancelled ahead of time and everything went on regardless of weather and how messed up the roads got.

California is lovely, warm, sunny but not enough rain to sustain the population. WAY more true about AZ. the poor Colorado river barely makes it to the gulf anymore, every drop is used. I cant imagine how totally impossible fighting fire with everything burning in hurricane force winds is.

I did therapy and stacked upper body yesterday. planned to walk but rain kept coming.

carolyn hope you dont lose power. we are used to it here and have supplies always ready to deal with it. so far this year has been benign. we can get "outs" any time of year
shannon maybe your father would do better with traction devices on his boots? maybe that's enabling bad behavior but if he's going to tend to his cows it might keep him upright.
