Pentagenarians and Beyond W/B 4/17

Today I have my grandson 5 here and needed to get to the store so I did a short workout. I did another Cathe Live that I have not done yet, Hi Low Hiit live with step, 43 minutes and a fitness blender stretch workout that I like, 9 minutes. Total time was 52 minutes and calories burned 311. I finally got out and picked up some fresh veggies and almond butter. I pick up most of the healthier items at Sprouts. Thankfully the end of next month their new store should be open right around the corner so I don't have to go so far. They were having 25% off all vitamins and supplements as well as skin and body care. The only thing is they were pretty high to begin with. I just picked up the Amazing grass, this time the ORAC antioxidant blend. Some of the Paleo experts are saying that is a favorite. I realized looking that the nutrition was so much better on that one than the energy one that I have been using lately.

Deb, I still have printer issues at times. It won't even let me shut it down via the off button. I end up unplugging it and it will come back warning me that I can lose info etc. because it was shut down wrong. It has only been since we switched to a different carrier for the internet. The app that came with my Samsung Galaxy Note Pro tablet doesn't work with the HP envy printer so I had to download and try other print services to get it to work. Then it is picky about printing some things till I figure out the method, or where it wants it, to get it printed. I cannot always download it as a PDF and get it to print. So much confusion. I love Kelly Coffey Meyer too and am thinking I need to go back to some of my dvds for awhile. I got her last ones and have hardly done anything with them since I was doing Hammer and Chisel when I got them.

Valerie, I know my grandparents farm cats were fine outdoors and never left home and did fine. Really I would imagine a cat has a bit more ability to get away from predators that are not humans than dogs. I had a cocker spaniel that was killed by coyotes. That is why my daughter wanted two dogs for a better chance at fighting back and getting away.

Linda, there was a music group that was called menudo. That was a weird name for a group. Gertie doesn't spend a lot of time outdoors but, I always give her a shower before I put it on so I don't have to worry about it being washed right back off. I think enough of it is absorbed into the skin. It still says greasy and then gets sticky and sometimes seems to have bits that want to roll off. I try to get it down into the fur and rub it in. If she rubs it off it is probably rolling around on the carpet in the mornings :) The guy told my Dad that his cat "crapped" by his doorstep. My Dad asked him how he figured it was just his cat since there are lots of cats around there. Most of the time my Dad's cats came in and used the litter box in the basement.

Hi Everyone,

Today I did a 75 minute Spinerval, 49.0 Serious Intervals. My heart rate average was 136 and max was 163. Calorie burn was around 600.

Diane Sue-I've heard of Sprouts but we don't have them around here. We have one called Plum Market, that is probably similar. That is terrible about your Dad's cat :( I'm so sorry about his fall too.
We lost our 2 cats in the fall of 2013. Misty died unexpectedly in mid October. She had a tumor but we didn't know until it was too late. Then we lost Tiger to renal failure less than 3 weeks later. That was a very tough time. It is so hard to lose our pets. We also had adopted a little black kitten around that time and she ended up having a fatal disease, FIP. We tried to treat her and even took her to a veterinary neurologist but she died at 9 months old.

Valerie-it sounds like you are taking great care of your kitty. I don't understand how someone can not like cats either. We like dogs too.

Deb-I'm glad the dog club meeting went well. I had a friend whose dog had heart worm and it was rough. I agree about erring on the side of caution.

Hi to Lori & Josie!

Judy

Good morning,

Happy Friday! We set up at the arena yesterday, now the fun begins. :).

Valerie, I know it is tough to keep some cats inside, especially if they have been outside cats in "another life". I would probably have had a cat at some point, if not so allergic to them. Although, I don't think I could ever be without a dog or two. :).

Lynda, careful on the shoulder, maybe did more weight than you should have? I hate the way the topical flea stuff is for the first 24 hours too....but the one I use at least smells like tea tree oil, not that chemical smell of the prescription ones. Yes, both Kylee and Keegan are entered in the trial this weekend, each running 2 of the 3 days. Today is Keegan, tomorrow is Kylee, and Sunday I will run both. This puts a day between Keegan's 2 runs...he does not like running 2 days in a row for some reason. One of John's fishing buddies that lives in Australia just had his dog on a walk in a park type area and there was a storm sewer where someone had stolen the grate that covers it...the dog went down there and was sucked into the drain....horrible , his wife and daughter saw the whole thing....they could not get the dog out.

Diane Sue, That is horrible about that guy and your Dad's cat. Did they do anything about it? Your time in England was priceless, especially for a child. I would love to have lived somewhere else for a time. I feel for you on the printer issue! I think my next printer will be a Canon. I set up my cousin's Canon printer/fax/copier/scanner combo thing in her office and the tech support people there are wonderful. I had to call them a different time as well and again, they were great. We have always had HP printers, but will definitely look into Canon for the next one. I think KCM is starting some type of streaming product too.

Judy, that was a vey rough time for you and Chris....our pets are part of our family and so hard to lose, especially at such a young age.

Hi to Lori & Josie,

Running Keegan this morning, I hope he cooperates.

Take care,

Hi everyone--

This morning I did Live Cardio Core Circuit (46 min.). There is some impact on this one, but it's intermittent and over quickly. She does 3 cardio hiits twice, then one standing core with a 10 lb.dumbbell (or 2 10s on one of the core workouts, side-leaning crunches) and 5 rounds like this. At the end she repeats all of the standing core sets. I like this one, even with the impact. My shoulder seems okay today.

Deb, what an awful story about that dog! Didn't they have to get the dog out some way??? I can't imagine just leaving it stuck there until it died. Good luck with your agility trials. I know from your past narratives that Keegan can be persnickety.

Too many predators around here for barn cats. We have had some sad experiences trying to keep them. We did have one barn cat, Alexander, who lived to be 20, but his companion, Fanny, disappeared after a year. I don't think Alex was much of a hunter, which is why he lasted so long. He would weep profusely when we petted him, which is, according to my vet friend, something that a few cats do. We had another one named Junior that I really loved and wanted to bring in the house, but Kim said he was a barn cat and had to stay out with this other one we called Little Devil because he was so feisty. After they disappeared, I told him NO MORE BARN CATS. Coyotes and Fisher Cats I think are the predators around here.

Judy, I remember how sad you were to lose those cats.

Happy Earth Day and Passover!

Hi Ladies,

Did somebody say menudo! I grew up eating it and I still love it, but only if my mom makes it. It takes a long time to cook and I remember my mom getting up in the middle of the night to check on the tripe and the corn. She never used hominy she had to cook it from scratch. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner :).

I did my usual workout Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and taking today off. Tomorrow we are doing 80 miles and it will be a fully supported ride to show the new riders how it will be on the actual ride. There will be pit stops at every 15-20 miles, lunch and motto cam that watches out for us and techs that will work on our bikes if needed. Cannondale employees donate their time and are at every pit stop during tomorrows ride and during the 7 days at ALC.

Judy, I remember when you lost your little cats. It was a though time.

Deb, good luck this weekend and I hope your babies behave ;).

Diane Sue, Menudo was a group of kids from Puerto Rico and I think one of them was Ricky Martin.

I will be back later.

Hi to Lynda, Valerie and Lori!

Josie

I never lost a cat to a predator but I still worry. we keep an eye on him as best we can. He's in at night, especially dusk and dawn. we have occasional coyotes and a bobcat around here that I know of. If I adopted a kitten I would make him an indoor kitty only. much less worry. but once kitties have been outside, it is very hard to convince them they should stay inside. they will drive you crazy begging to go out.

well, Josie that is quite the ringing endorsement of menudo!. I've heard of it but never saw it on a menu. does not sound like something I'd order for a meal but if I were at someone's house I'd maybe try it.... maybe.
Deb, that sounds like an awful experience...seeing your pet washed away and unable to do anything.

did a hike this morning, a couple miles in 2 local parks. definitely not hard. looking for spring flowers and birds. will need to do something more energetic yet this afternoon.

I wanted upper body today and used Cathe Live Cardio Boxing plus Plyo Legs first 23 minutes, 150 calories, for a warm up stopping when Cathe says gloves off. It did have a lot of boxing with some quick plyo cardio. I then did Upper Body With Ball live, 51 minutes, 235 calories. I finished off doing Cathe's Yoga Max express 2, 34 minutes, 79 calories. Total time was 1 hr 45 minutes, calories 459.
Upper Body with Ball most moves are done 12 reps and all exercise rounds are done 3 times with some variations on the moves
Chest Fly 12 reps 15's, 15's, 15's third set is on an incline on the ball
Pullover 15's, 15's, 15;s 12 reps, 10 reps, 10reps
Push ups decline with ball 12,12,12 reps
Shoulder Giant set
seated overhead press 12's, incline front arc raise 8's, 5's 5's, seated lateral raise 5's,5's, 8's, smile rear fly 8's, 5's, 8's all done 12 reps
Bicep/Tricep superset
Incline curl hammer 1st set 12's, straight curls 12's, curls with a sweep 12's 12 reps for triceps and biceps
triceps extension overhead first two sets then one arm kickbacks last set 12# for all
Complex ( I hate getting down on the floor and back up sequences because it makes me feel more vulnerable to injuries)
10's down jump out push up row, row, up curl up and overhead tricep extension repeat 8 more times total 9
Giant Core
3 sets 20# oblique pulls 12 reps right then 12 left, 15 to feet over and up 10 times 2nd set then 8 3rd
switch to stability ball (I used my bosu ballast ball)
flutter kicks, lying on side pulls each side, reverse curl with ball on knees

Judy, right now Sprouts is my favorite store to shop. They carry lots of the things I look for when cooking that I normally would never find. They carry a lot of local produce. I can get most supplements and natural skin care products etc.. there. There seems to be a growth of healthier stores coming in to Oklahoma City. There is Natural foods market but they do not have a good turnover and I worry about how fresh the food is. I have shopped there a couple of times. Whole Foods has been around longer but they are overpriced and in a busy area that I do not like to drive to. I have been there once and decided it was a waste of my time.
That is so sad that you lost those kitties so close together like that. It must have been heartbreaking.

Deb, so, do you do dog shows? I am guessing from reading your posts. That has to be fun :) No, they never did anything about the guy and my Dad's cat. My Dad was never a person to seek any type of vengeance The only thing was for him to confront the guy after a neighbor told him what happened. It is a very small town community. That is awful about walking the dog and it falling in the drain. What an awful experience. Maybe I need to look into something else besides HP. We have pretty much always had HP computers and printers. My husband got an apple computer once and sold it. He never got used to using it.

Lynda, I have done that workout and didn't think the impact was too bad. It seemed easier than the STS Cardio Core Circuit. I caught a barn kitten at my grandparents when I was ten. I was determined to tame that mean little thing. I had tons of sharp little claw marks. They let me take him home with me :)

Josie, I remember the group Menudo. That is interesting that Ricky Martin might have been one of them. I am sure all of the ingredients make the tripe taste okay but, the idea of eating it does not go well with me. If I didn't know what it was I might like it. I ate deep fried rocky mountain oysters once and loved them till my friends told me what I was eating. I never ate them again. It was a group of 18 -19 year olds goofing off. We had went to see some drag racing. Odd to remember the experience :)

Valerie, I think that I would always keep my cat inside. My mother did not like the animals in the house growing up. Our dogs and cats stayed outside most of the time. She did tolerate the Siamese cat in the house part of the time.

Deb, I was checking out the link that you gave me for the flea and tick stuff. I gather it is a repellant. That seems it would be a bit different from the Nexgard or the Frontline which actually kills them. I am thinking maybe the collar would be good when we go on our trip this summer. I checked the ingredients and the Natural Insect Repellant that I use from Melaleuca for us and I sprayed on the dogs has similar ingredients in it. It has cinnamon oil, lemongrass, geranium oil, thyme oil, and peppermint in it. I really like it.

Good morning,

Well Keegan did not qualify, but I was pretty happy with his performance. He stopped to sniff a piece of "fluff" in the ring....( don't get me started on why the judge does not make sure that is not there before the dog runs), but he did everything, a lot better than last time. At least he finished the run, thought was way over the allowed time.

This is actually one of our club members that went to the National Agility competition, and was filmed by Fox Sports....they thought he was a riot....he does this before every run he makes, I saw him at our trial yesterday:

Lynda, I really liked that Cardio Core Circuit workout too. If I remember right, the few times I had to modify the impact were pretty easily done. As for the horrible dog loss incident, I believe they tried to get it out, but it was too far in for them to get to. I would have nightmares if that happened to one of my dogs, or any dog I knew.

Josie, good luck on the ride today, have fun! Nice for the Cannondale people to volunteer, that is the kind of bike I have. :).

Valerie, I have not had a cat, ( inside or out) but have heard them when they are insistent on going out....I can see that if they have been outside, it would not be easy to keep them in.

Diane Sue, nice pics! the last one is before you moved in to where you currently are and was changed back then too? We are getting a Whole Foods in a few months, it's being built right now....but I heard it is very expensive. We have a local Co-Op that has some decent stuff, but wish we had more options. Yes, we do dog shows, Agility & Obedience....lots of fun but it can be stressful! Yes, the flea stuff is more of a repellent, to kill them you have to use an insecticide.

Hi to Lori!

Kylee today, I entered her in 2 events...this should be fun.

Take care,

Good morning ladies! Been working late the past couple of days. Been keeping up with my Spring Challenge. Thirsday was an upper core that had way too many side planks with weights. Disaster waiting to happen for my shoulders so I subbed in Live upper body express. Lunch was SB arms. My arms still feel this days workout. Yesterday was SB butt lift and at lunch we did a little of barre and some standing abs I made up from You Tube from Pop Sugar. Ladies loved this core work! Today I am going to try out Thursday's You Can Do Anything for One Minute. Looked like fun.

Judy...that was so sad what you went through with Misty and Tiger. My heart broke for you. Awesome you signed back up with SB. The year subscription is the way to go. Works out to something like $6 and change a month. Worth every penny. I am in to my second year. Once I discovered barre I was hooked.

Diane sue...terrible about your Dad's cat. Horrible person to do that. Sounds like a really nice experince for you so young living in England. While there in 1994 we did as much of the tourist attractions as we could. Is that a tin ceiling?

Deb...have a great weekend. Hilarious about Nilla in the stroller! She is my little diva and at her age she gets everything she wants! Sad story about that dog fallen in. I too would have nightmares. That would haunt me if it was my dog. That basset hound was adorable.

Lynda...I like the Live Ice Metabolic. So sorry about your shoulder. So right now 3 out of the 7 of us are having a shoulder issue! I am so prone to tendonitis. Kind of fustrating but have learned to deal with it. I have done the Cardio Core Circuit a few times. Love the standing abs on this one. I was sad when Natasha Richardson past. I lovd some of her movies.

Valerie..I do not understand how people do not like cats either but they are out there. Mine are indoor cats. Too many coyotes out here.

Josie...wish you the best on your ride. Great they do this supported ride for the new riders. I remember Menudo to and Rick Martin. Wow completely forgot about them.

Have a great weekend all. We are working out side getting our patios set up. Can't wait for this to be done. Nice having Bob home to help. Usually he is working and I am setting up. :p

Deb, I am sorry that they didn't have things cleaned up well. I bet it is rewarding working with your dogs. The Bassett hound was cute. The last picture is how the ceiling was before we moved in. My husband took out the drop down.

Lori, yes it is a tin ceiling. We had to wait a long time e for it to arrive but did not want tin coated so it was worth it.

Our first cat we found in our yard sometime after 4th of july fireworks. we started feeding her because she hid under the bushes and wouldn't come out for a long time seemed like weeks. eventually she came in the house, must have been someone's pet, was used to people and not feral, so I took her to the vet and got some info. no ID or chip. we had her for quite a few years until she developed a tumor and passed. the next kitty was 11 yo and a hunter/ killer, adopted from a shelter. didn't get along with other cats. we had him to 7 years until he died around 17yo. the next kitty, current one, was about 2 when we got him from a shelter. all kitties came when called, stayed in our yard and had no brushes with predators as far as I know. If I got a young kitten who didn't know what "outside" was, I'd keep him housebound.

Diane sue, those are some significant improvements. I've never seen a tin ceiling before. it is quite striking. Lori, you put tin on the walls, didn't you? It's not anything I've seen done out here. we are planning a vacation home so I've looked at lots of home styles and furnishings and I've only seen it on this thread. maybe it's a regional thing?

we have whole foods here but nowhere close . no Sprouts either that I'm aware of. we have a coop called PCC but they also are a long drive. used to do it but traffic has gotten too bad to be worth it.

Diesel the basset hound is a riot! I've heard they are very strong minded and do what they want when they want, more so that other dogs.

Just found our my diabetic brother who refuses to take insulin, exercise, and eats what he wants, won't see an diabetes educator ... is running head first into the first serious complication.... he got an infection in his big toe...don't know if it was due to an injury he didn't feel because of neuropathy, but antibiotics didn't help and he has to get it amputated. I'm afraid this is the beginning of a bad string of events to come. he is not that old and if he has circulatory problems already, it will move upward. high blood sugar affects different people in different ways. this is not a benign development. He's had infections in his lower leg before too. NOT good news.

Hi everyone--

Deb, isn't it funny how dogs can get distracted. I've seen Max get all interested in a butterfly. Hilarious basset hound. I remember some old sit-com that had a talking basset hound. Can't remember the title though. I guess I would call the fire department if something like that happened to a dog. I can't imagine doing nothing.

Diane Sue, that ceiling must reflect a lot of light now. Interesting. My grandmother had a lot of barn cats and they were not pets. You could expect snarling and scratching if you went near them trying to pet. That was the thing about Junior--he was a barn cat my husband picked up at a local farm, along with Little Devil, and he was the sweetest thing. I still remember him following us when we went on a hike and we had to start carrying him because it was a long hike/walk in steep terrain. He behaved like a dog I think. Not sure he could have transitioned to being a house cat, but I wanted to try.

Valerie, you should tell him what happened to Plath's father Otto, who died when she was 8. He thought he had lung cancer and would not go to a doctor. He stubbed his toe, it turned black, and finally Plath's mother persuaded him to see a doctor, who told him that he had diabetes, not lung cancer. Mother Aurelia reports in her memoir that the doctor said, "How can a brilliant man be so stupid?" He was a college professor--an entomologist and expert on bumblebees. He developed gangrene and had to have his leg amputated. In the hospital he died of complications--a cardiac embolism. Huge impact on Plath, and probably her most famous poem, "Daddy." Doesn't sound like you will be writing any poems about your brother.

Josie, I will try anything in terms of food, but I have a feeling tripe is not for me. I love raw oysters and sushi, so maybe.

Did anyone try that workout from Live Thursday--You can do anything for a minute? I will preview and see if it will be doable for me.

Lori, yeah, my shoulder is a little achy. If it starts keeping me awake at night I will go get a cortisone shot.

We are off to see Eye in the Sky tonight. Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman. It's about drones--something Kim is interested in because his college roommate--a news reporter Scott Shane--wrote a book about drones. It's so rare for my husband to go to a movie so this was a shocker.

Today I did Cathe Live Icy Boot camp, 48 minutes, 288 calories. HR 114 avg/148max. I liked this one. The cardio segments were not real long so it was not bad on the impact. I went pretty low on the upper body since I did them yesterday. It was a step cardio segment , a lower weight segment, and an upper segment. I felt I was not overworking upper since each of the 7 rnd was a different body part. Max weights were 15#'s. That was pretty much lower body. I wanted a bit more cardio so I did half of For the Love of Cardio Live and added the stretch at the end, 28 min, 174 calories, avg. hr. 116/ max 137 . I finished off With Tai Cheng Neural Reboot from the final week. I used to use these a lot, they really helped with my knee improving. I like how he warms up then works from the feet up to the neck. There is some foam rolling in it too. I really need to do the other half sometime too which is the Tai Chi moves. I wish Beach Body didn't charge so much for the extra set that is really just two workouts. One is the Tai Chi moves done in a much quicker flow since you have already learned them through the original set and the other dvd is Qigong.

Linda, that was 1955 and the dog's name was Cleo. I think that Jackie Cooper was in the show. I don't notice the tin reflecting very much light. We had it in our last house but it was painted white. I am not sure if it was added when they did the remodel or not. The house was over 100 years old and in the historical district. I have seen quite a few ceilings done in tin as well as walls and counters on Penterist. When I was looking for ideas to get rid of the dated lighting I saw the tin as an alternative. A lot left the boxed area in the ceiling , but my husband didn't want it to look like it was a remodel of what was already there. The kitten I took home liked being outside. He disappeared at about 7 months old. It is interesting when you realize that left on their own in a barn they are just a wild animal so to speak. At the time I didn't expect some tiny kitten to be so vicious. I really want to try Thursday's Live workout Monday. I previewed part of it and it looks doable. The cardio segments do not look real long.

Valerie, Sprouts is based out of Phoenix and seems to be spreading across the Midwest. They have had new stores going up in Kansas and now there are 3 that I know of here in the metro area. As stated to Linda above I found the tin ceiling idea on Penterist and we had some already in our last home that was painted white. I am sorry that your brother is not taking care of himself. He has to know the consequences. It seems he would worry about amputation. My mother in law had heart disease and diabetes. She took her insulin though. She took it seriously and took test strips to the family reunion to check all of the family. We had a Persian once that my husband bought for me at a pet store. It ended up only liking one of my daughters. It would his and growl at the rest of us. It slept on her bed and that was it. Not a real pleasant personality. Then we got Bobo. He was such a sweet cat. He was part Siamese. The cat I had when I was young that was Siamese was named Simba. Funny, because that was way before Lion King. I think I got it from a story book or something. She was mostly my cat. In fact she got in some neighbors house and they couldn't get her out from under their bed. She was snarling and growling till I got there and coaxed her out. I don't know how she managed to get there. It was two streets over. That is so sweet about your cat following along when you went hiking :)
