passing the plateau of weight loss

I am not up on the accronyms of the videos. What is GS stand for in GS 3day split? At this point I have recorded on my Tivo type cable box Cathes daily routines, the step stuff if hard on the knees. I do the power endurance and total muscle, then the upper and lower pyramid and core max. Im thinking the extra diet aspect is gonna be the only thing to do the trick. I really appreciate everyones input:D

GS is Gym Styles. This is a series of 3 DVDs Cathe put out with a focus on strength and some endurance factored in. The 3 days split means that you do each DVD once or twice per week to work each muscle group thoroughly, either once or twice, depending upon preference. I think the muscle groupings are : GS legs, GS chest and triceps, GS back, shoulders & biceps. You literally split the work across three days.

Definitely worth getting, especially if you are not thinking of getting STS.

Try to get diet soda out of your life. Studies have shown people actually get fatter while drinking them, though nobody seems to know why. Scientists say they think people feel they can eat more because they're ingesting less calories from their drinks. As someone who's been fat and who's drank diet sodas for years I know I have to eat while drinking them to disguise the unnatural taste in my mouth and to counteract the acid they seem to stir up in my stomach. Also, if you're drinking diet soda you not drinking water and other drinks you should be drinking (i.e., green tea, fat-free milk...). I remember Bob Greene, in his Best Life Diet book said diet sodas keep people addicted to sweets and the sweets cycle needs to be broken. David Zinczenko, in his Abs Diet books, also feels we must ween ourselves off the stuff. I know I feel better when I steer clear but I also know it's tough.

As a vidiot/gym rat since my 20's, my weight didn't start sneaking up until I hit 43 (I'm 46 now) - my thyroid? Totally efficient! My hormones? Every 30 days (just what I need, used to have 4 in a year, now every month!), have taught as many as 10 classes (turbkick, bodypump, and spinning) and no budge in the scale.....now, with injuries - the other gift of age, I work out about 6 hours a week, plus or minus (not counting walking dog), and what FINALLY broke the plateau was quitting chocolate for lent! Who knew? A few squares every night, a couple cookies during the day - those calories added up....but I'm with Dorothy - its all in the diet....

ok, I get it about sugars, processed foods, etc., but if you're really craving something sweet (like chocolate), or salty (my downfall-potatoe chips)what's a good replacement?????????????????????
I find i get cravings after dinner. I've been having a gala apple around 8pm every evening. Good or nor good?

Sometimes a small piece of hard candy will help that, especially for some reason a peppermint. I also like a baked apple with just a tiny, tiny amount of brown sugar splenda(which would not be considered "clean" because of the Splenda).

I agree

I had a patient that wanted to follow a recent diet book, and I read it and agreed with about 95% of it (the last part involved injecting a hormone-not something I agree with)...but I encouraged her to do the rest-get rid of highly processed foods, items containing high fructose corn syrup (which your body is unable to process correctly and gets stored as fat), and artificial sweetners. I saw her back, approx 5 months later, just this past week and the only change she has followed consistently was giving up her Diet Pepsi (she usually had 4-6 per day) and she has lost 15 lbs (she's 48 and not into exercise regularly) and reported to me that her craving for sweets has all but disappeared. She looks and feels so much better. I have a hard time giving up my Splenda made lemonade...but it does really have an impact.
diet is 75-90% of weight loss (I remember training for a marathon last summer and fall-ran up to 45 miles per week some weeks, but felt entitled to eat more and darned if I didn't compensate for EVERY SINGLE CALORIE!!! lesson learned!) and yes it's calories in/calories out, but also what a person eats makes a huge difference on metabolism!
take care and keep trying!
julie :)

I find if I crave chocolate - fine - it's portion control girl! I don't crave salt or potato chips, but you might want to substitue pretzels - they have protein and not alot of calories.

Apple a day is great, but they also contain caffeine so it might keep you up at night.

I get cravings for chocolate after a pasta/red sauce meal. Even my husband does. I have to give in those nights, but just a small piece.

There's plenty of substitutes out there. Take your time at the grocery store, read labels, labels, labels!!:)

DmDj,

To get back to the original question, you might want to change up your workouts a bit in addition to checking your diet. Sometimes we get in a rut with our workouts and do the same old thing over and over. Try a different piece of equipment (BOSU, Kettlebells) or go running or ride a bike.

As others suggested, sometimes you just need to tweak your diet a little. The last couple of weeks, I stopped eating candy. We have it at the office and I keep a bag of peppermint patties around the house but lately it's gotten out of control. One piece, became two and so on. I usually allow myself a small piece of chocolate every day but it's has gotten out of control. I feel better, lighter :) since I've cut out the candy.

HTH,

BTW..I'm 46.

I have a hard time with the data concerning Splenda, etc. Unless, of course, they cause you to actually break down and give in to real sugar cravings? I have read the research and the warnings and have tried to get my husband to quit eating and ingesting them in any form (to no avail). He looks awesome...48 years old and could be on the cove of M&F. Maybe it's the difference between men and women?

It's always easier for men. Testosterone...

Right now, I'm eating about 75-80% clean and I'm still losing weight but not like I was when I was closer to 90%. It's about time to step back and re-think my meal plans. I also started drinking more diet soda, which re-introduced the sweet cravings... I'm at 175lbs today and was just looking at the chart where I track my weight. I was in the 180-190 range for only 23 days and I've been in the 170-180 range for 43 days now. I should be well-into the 160-170 range by now but I'm not because I've backslid more than I should have on my clean eating. I didn't even realize how much impact it's made until just now, looking at my chart. Hmm. Guess it IS time to tighten up.
