Pain deep in shoulder

I have had pain inside my left shoulder for about a week now. I've tried to avoid upper body work for a couple of days, but it's hard not to do upper, after doing lower the previous day. I decided to try the Upper Body Pyramid today and when I was doing the db flyes and bench presses, it made my shoulder ache. The actual shoulder work did not bother my shoulder at all. Does anyone have any idea why this is? The back work (pullovers and lat raises didn't bother me either). Now my shoulder still hurts and I can't put my fingers on the pain. It seems to be so far in the muscle that I can't touch it.

Thanks,

Alexis

Hi Alexis,

I'm not going to be much help other than I know what you're going through.

I get a pain in my shoulder only when I do chest work (it is my right). Shoulder work does not bother me either. I can usually grit through the chest work pain because as soon as I am done it goes away and I move on.

However, over the past few months, my shoulder tends to hurt during cardio and it is definately the same pain. Once it starts hurting during a tape, it doesn't stop until I do. Then it doesn't hurt anymore.

I asked my doctor about it and he wrote it off to carrying my purse on that side and gave me some samples of Celebrex to try (it is an arthiritis medicine). I did a little research on the drug before I took it and it turns out it is a Sulfa drug and I am allergic to Sulfa drugs (I'm not going back to that doctor!).

Anyway, I am sorry I can't be of any help but I wanted you to know that I experience it too. I am going to try to see another doctor about it and I'll let you know if I hear anything.

Take care,
Mikie

I have had shoulder pain on my left side for about two years. It actually starts in the neck, onto the shoulder and into the arm. Oddly, the pain is most intense after I've worked at the computer for any length of time. It never hurts while I'm doing any weight work though, but it's there most other times. I've gotten so used to it now that I don't pay attention to it.
I will add that two years ago I fell down on the ice. I injured my lower back and thats when the neck anda shoulder pain started. It was so bad that I went to chiropracter, doctor and physical therapist. It got better - to the point it is now, but never went away. I try to ignore it. Hope you feel better.

Well,

I guess I better schedule a trip to the doctor, because my shoulder hurts when I'm not working out too. Not when I'm at rest, but when I lift it laterally.

Thanks both of you. I'll also let you know what I find out.

Alexis

Please make sure that you go to the doctor. You could have shoulder impingement. Shoulder injuries take forever to heal. I usually go to my chiropractor for this kind of thing. I know that when I sleep with my arm up that aggravates the injury as well.
Good Luck!

I am currently getting physical therapy for my right shoulder due to an impingemnent. Doing overhead presses really does't hurt my shoulder, although I cannot straighten out my arm over my head. I was told to quit doing overhead presses permanently. In fact, my doctor told me that if he had the power, he would ban overhead presses. So many people develop shoulder problems because of them. My physical therapy consists doing certain exercises that will strenghten my rotator cuff. Lat rows, rhomboid pinches are good exercises to do to strenghten the muscles in your back. Do not do overhead presses or military french presses. They will aggravate your problem. My PY also has me doing exercises with a theraband. It is getting better, but it will take a while to get back to 100%. Sitting at a comuter also aggravates my shoulder. In fact, I think that is how it all bagan. Doing OH presses aggravated it.

It's good that you are going to see your doctor. He will be able to tell you what you need to do to "fix" your shoulder problem. I can pretty much guarantee he'll tell you "no more overhead presses."

I've had impingement problems in the past, and I avoid like the plague any BARBELL overhead presses (as well as Arnold Presses and barbell full upright rows), but I can do them with dumbbells (I can change the grip to a more "palms facing in" position that works well).

You might want to discuss this alternative with your PT.
