P90X - Should I try it? ....have questions!

FitNut

Okay folks...I need your advice. I have been doing Cathe for a few years ...love her to pieces :)

However, I am really thinking I need something new to shock my body!

Will P90X shock my body? Has anyone tried it and NOT liked it? I noticed on their website they have a 30 day return guarantee and you only have to pay $15 up front so I figure...what do I have to lose?

How are the cardio workouts? Weight workouts? Do I have to have a pull-up bar??? How much are they and where is the best place to get one?

Does the workouts kick your butt? I am an advanced exerciser and need something to kick my butt! I have at least 30 lbs to lose and really want to get focused once and for all. I think a new program might motivate me a bit. Plus I know I need to fully clean up my diet (which I started today - am doing Body For Life.)

What kind of results has you or anyone you know had on this program? Do you follow the eating plan too?

Hello my dear FitNut.

Here are the answers to your p90x questions...

Will they shock your body? ABSOLUTELY!!!! No question.

How are the cardio workouts? Plyometrics is a crazy sweat festival. A total killer. If you've been doing Cathe cardio for a few years, you may find the rest of the cardio a little dull. However, I found that by following the p90x rotation to the letter (which was a decrease in cardio for me personally) I got better results. Go figure.

The weight workouts are different from Cathe and highly effective. Highly, highly effective. You'll be doing new moves, different weights, new rep cycles, etc. They will be sure to shock your body.

Yes, a pull-up bar is pretty essential for the workouts. You should do a search to see what others have done. I workout in my attic and my husband simply hung a bar from the rafters and viola...I'm doing pull ups.

In a nut shell...it is a very tough series. Well designed, well thought out and insanely challenging. If you've been exercising regularly and are prepared for really hard work...you WILL see results. I did NOT follow the p90x diet plan as I found it far too time consuming. I have been a true Body For Lifer since my second baby was born at the end of 2003.

As far as my results, I have never see faster, more impressive results. Ever.

Negatives on p90x...there is a dread factor with this series that I never get with Cathe. There isn't as much JOY or fun in these workouts and I really missed Cathe during the rotation. Try sticking with Ab Ripper X for 3 months and you just might pull your hair out.

I stuck w/ it for the whole 90 days and I may be in the minority, but I hated it. I did get some nice upper body definition and I did use a pull up bar, but I really didn't think it was so much more than I have gotten from Cathe workouts and hers are so much more fun. The ab workout is good and Plyometrics is good cardio, but boring. I hated it and I really don't think I would do it again. I would recommend you get the Hardcore series and follow the P90X rotation with those workouts instead. It would be way more fun and I think the results would be just as good.

Hi Fitnut! P90X has virtually very little cardio. I personally couldn't stand KenpoX (kickboxing) but did LOVE PlyoX. The strength training is gym style. It provides you with a black binder which you compute how many sets & reps you were able to do. You try to challenge yourself every week by looking at your sheets to increase your reps. You don't follow the DVDs per se. You pause the DVD if you can go longer than the crew. The workouts are 1 1/2 hrs. long. And yoga is that long too. I did the Classic rotation for 90 days & saw much more definition in my back as well as my abs. I did not, however, follow their nutrition guide. You don't need a pull-up bar. If you have a place to use resistance bands (the kind w/handles on them) in different strengths this suffices.

If you already have Hardcore, I would stick w/this but if you want to add to your library just for variety then go for it. Be aware though that many of the P90X people started with a different program first such as Power 90 & THEN went onto P90X. I didn't see any weight loss just more definition.

I've seen MORE body fat loss w/Hardcore. HTH, Kathy:D

I did a 12 week rotation that took me 4 months to complete. I have a love/hate realtionship with these workouts.

They are different than anything else out there, mostly because you really go at your own tempo and weight for each exercise. I liked that. I was kinda annoyed with the choreographed weight lifting method after I came off P90X. I felt P90X was very effective for my upper body, just ok for the lower. I did not have a pull up bar, I just used the bands anchored from a high point.

Loved:
The variety of exercises - I have never seen so many versions of pushups.
The ability to lift fast/slow or inbetween, and setting a number of reps goal.
Having the time between exercised to record your weight/reps without pressing pause.
Most all the workouts (except yoga?) are an hour or less. Even if there was some initial dread factor the workouts all seemsed to go by very quickly.
PlyoX.

Hated:
Pushups and pullups. Obviously Tonys favorite, I think they were overdone.
Only one core workout and done every other day... the same workout, yawn.
Kenpo and CardioX. I didn't even bother with them, I just used other cardio.
Tony, and the music, although each grew on my a little as time went on.

Overall I would definately recommend this series, just because it is so different, and sometimes we need different. I think it is as effective as you make it. You can lift slow and very heavy and stay within the 8/12 rep range, or you can go lighter and more reps.

I have done the P90X workouts as well. I also have a love hate relationship with it. It's not as fun as Cathe's but if you want effective, then this workout will do that for you. For the cardio you could substitute Cathe's workouts. I did not follow the eating program either but I did see definition. The lower body you could also substitute Cathe's workouts for one of those days. Plyo is not so bad, the yoga felt a little long to me especially if I didn't have a lot of time on my hands. It is definitely an effective workout.

Hi There,

I took the plunge and ordered p90x this morning. On another forum p90x is rated really high. Read excellent reviews on how it has blasted thru plateus, added more definition. I am a devoted Cathe fanatic and have been for years, have all her new DVD's. I also run & love Tae Bo. I needed something to push to a new level. Plus, right now I need more variety. I also ordered Yoga Bootie Ballet.

I'll post after they arrive and use them.

Laura,
Keep us posted on the Yoga Bootie Ballet. I saw the infomercial and these workouts look like so much fun! I would love to order Power 90X one day! If you bit the bullet FitNut, keep us posted also! I would love to hear the feedback.

Hi Angela:7

Been searching the internet at different sites and have read some really great stories about YBB. Folks say they gained more definition especially in the lower body and lost inches while having fun.

We will post with a review after it arrives.
Angela have a great day!

HI all. I'm in the next boat with fitnut. I ordered just straight P90 to get in the Tony Groove. Heard it was good on the VF forum and those people know some stuff I tell ya. Man, I thought you all were hitting high with Cathe? Well they are slam dunking all over the everyone. If there is anything you want to know, check it out.

I unfortunately sent my YBB packing today. When I did it on Sunday I was pissed. Just pissed. I said what the heck am I doing. I did it, then when it got to the yoga part, I totally flipped and said, *that's it, your going back* and didn't finish. I got angry with the girls, I'll call them because they did not que enough and I just can't say more without getting shivers.

So, here's to P90. I know the shipping is pretty slow with them but I guess they can't have a whole company do every thing right. Who elsewould take back your DVD? That is what worked for me.
