P90X fan looking for variety and new challenges

Cathe has a great reputation for challenging videos, and I've seen many posts from several of you who have done both Cathe and P90X. It looks like Cathe's cardio is similar/tougher than P90X, but the upper body workouts are more intense with P90X.

For those of you that have done both programs - do you find Cathe as "engaging" as Tony Horton? I know some folks don't like his humor, and I've heard it was particularly annoying on his earlier tapes, but I enjoy his banter on P90X.

Also, Beachbody has lots of men and women both doing P90 and P90X. Cathe's fans seem to be 95% women. Any comments from any guys who are using Cathe tapes who have also worked out with Beachbody tapes? I enjoyed Debbie Siebers slim-in-6 tapes (other than the monotony of the same Burn-It-Up tape day after day!), but I do like Tony's personality on his tapes.

While I'm at it with the newbie questions....does Cathe do any traveling road trips? I see that she's done an annual road trip in New Jersey, but I don't see that she's brought the trips around the country. In 2005, Tony Horton participated in several Fitness Camps that provided great motivation and were lots of fun (and hard work!) to attend. The camps are up in the air for 2006, and several of us would love to have a camp/road trip to help us focus on a timeframe to reach fitness goals.

Thanks for any comments and help!!

Cathe's cardio is harder, especially the IMAX's and Kickboxing.

Cathe's strength is just as hard as P90X...just DIFFERENT...which is always good.

Cathe's personality and demeanor is way better than Tony's, she runs circles around him in that department. Seems like such a tiny thing but it is exactly that reason why I will always purchase from Cathe and never again from Beachbody.

I agree for cardio and lower body, but P90X upper body is definitely a step up from Cathe, IMO.

Cathe's version of plyo work is much "jumpier" than Tony's (which I prefer), which tends to include more agility work and a variety of plyo moves without too many "jump as high as you can" moves or "jump OFF the step" moves.

As for their instruction style, Tony is a very "working in the gym with my pals and goofing around a bit" type of instructor. Cathe is very motivating and professional, and at times she can be a bit more "girly" (wearing hair pieces, having long manucured nails, sometimes giggling--but less of this with more recent workouts--she also used to say "looks hot" quite a bit in some earlier workouts). They are different, but I like them both.

I think a combo of P90X upper body, core work, stretch, yoga and plyo with Cathe IMAX2 and other cardio as well as lower body workouts like Gym Styles, would be ideal. In fact, I may do a rotation like this over Christmas break.

Oh yeah...P90X legs is hardly a challenge and I would consider P90X leg work to me Beginner/Intermediate. However, Cathe worked her magic on my legs for a few years before I did P90X!! Her leg work is bad ass!!

I agree. The upper body work of P90X is tough and the lower body work is weaker. Cathe's plyo work and Kickboxing is more difficult and "jumpier" but also much more fun IMHO. Tony's Plyo and Kickboxing does definitely include more agility type moves and are somewhat unique in themselves. I rotate them with Cathe's KPC and Imaxes (I have more fun with Cathe's DVDs).

Yoga X is also one tough workout...sounds like it would be easy but I kid you not. You know you worked hard after finishing that workout!!

Tony is not as motivating as Cathe (when she tells me to jump higher I really do!!), but I do like him (I know some people can't stand him.) Combined I feel they are an awesome combination to have in your workout collection.

Oh, by the way, I've been mixing the Ab-Ripper X with Cathe's Coremaxes and I think my 6 pack just turned into an 8 pack. That is one great ab DVD worth owning ;).

Thanks for your thoughtful comments!

Does Cathe's hardcore series include a 90-day type program of rotating the routines, or is it up to each user to do workouts in any order? I've seen some folks have posted p90X style rotations using Cathe, but it's unclear if these are modifications of Cathe's recommendations or whether they're being posted because Cathe provides no recs.

Also, Beachbody trains customers to always wait for the frequent 25% off sales....do Cathe programs go on sale too? I see the main board has VHS clearance sales, but I don't see any informercial-style "buy today and save" type stuff, and the hardcore series is pretty pricey compared with P90X.

if you go to the rotations forum cathe posts rotations using a variety of her videos. other then that its been pretty much up to the customer how they would like to use their workouts.

when cathe puts out new workouts she does presales where you can get the workouts at about half off. or you buy in her dvd bundles but other then that i never seen a big sale kind of thing. but i really think you will like the hardcore series b/c of the variety of workouts but also the premixes are just awesome and can be used to create a mish mosh of workouts.

I really love the upper body weight workouts of P90X.I think the Cathe's cardio is harder than P90X with the exception of Plyo X. That workout is a cardio blast. I enjoy more the Cathe's personality. She's always motivating and I look forward to working out with her. I don't like Tony as much as Cathe but he is a great instructor too.

I avoid to do the Yoga workout (1 hour and a half) but I hate Yoga. I don't have enough patience.

Cathe puts together some roations "after the fact," but they aren't really pre-planned like P90X seems to be. And I often find them to be unbalanced (too much step, or lack of recovery, or working muscles two days in a row, by having you go "light" on the weights in some circuit workout). I once posted a "P90X-like" rotation using mostly Cathe workouts (she doesn't offer all the elements I like to have in a rotation, the way P90X does). It's somewhere in the archives of the "rotations" forum.

The only price reductions you'll see with Cathe's workouts are during the presales (where there is a substantial discount), or if you buy groups of DVD's. The video sale is once-in-a-lifetime occurance.

Kathryn has some valid points.

As far as rotations, I have been doing the GS's rotation, along with one full body workout, for a month now and have seen MAJOR strength and definition gains. I am going to stay on this rotation another month and switch over to S&H.

I am getting the P90X DVD's and look forward to incorporating them with Cathe's rotation. But one of the main reasons for getting the P90X's is for my DH to join in....it is hard for him to workout w/Cathe unless he sees a man in the DVD. Don't ask, it is a male thing....

I have a question for all who have purchased P90X stuff. I checked out the website because I became intrigued with all the references here, but I couldn't find any prices on individual workouts. Can you just get the Shoulders and Arms, for example? How much would that run me?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes, BB sells the individual workouts....but they bury it deep in their website and for the life of me I can't find it either right now. I suggest you call and ask them: 1 (800) 730-6622

They've been offering some pretty good deals on P90X lately - I've seen the entire package offered for $99 and shipping is down to $15...sometimes even offered free...so you may find it cheaper to buy the entire package than to get 2 or 3 specific DVDs.

I found out that my local library has 52 Cathe DVDs available - including all 10 of the hardcore series....so I can check 'em out to evaluate her "style" before shelling out $250 for the series...nice! :p Not a single Beachbody title is available, though...maybe your library will have a P90X title for you to evaluate.
