P90x and Yoga

Gemini girl

Cathlete
Hi everyone-
I'm in the first week of the classic rotation, I love, love love this series. But, I had yoga yesterday, and to be honest, i'm not a yoga girl and only did 30 minutes of it before I turned it off. I was bummed because I didn't do it and felt like I screwed up progress. For you P90xers, how important is yoga in this? If I don't do the full 90 minutes, how bad is that? what can I do in it's place?

Do what I did, substitute a yoga workout that's more your style. YogaX is WAYYY beyond my yoga abilites right now, so I asked some of the Xers on VF for suggestions and they offered me several tips on yoga workouts that would be more in keeping w/my abilites right now.

I figure I'll work up to X standard in my own time. Remember what Tony says: "Do your best, forget the rest."

I asked this exact same question when I first got p90x and realized that the yoga tape was a whopping 90 minutes long. I didn't understand it. But, being the perfectionist that I am, I forced myself to do the entire workout each time it was called for and guess what...I AM TOTALLY HOOKED.

I did Yoga X last night and cannot believe how much stronger I am in all the poses and how amazingly flexible I've become. The improvements are so noticable it's staggering. Yoga uses the body in such a different way and I love, love, love it.

I just won an auction on Ebay for two Bryan Kest tapes (Tone & Sweat) and can't wait to dig into those. Yoga is definitely going to be in my life from here on out.

I hope you find the same connection, but if not...don't sweat it...just find something else you love.

Think of the P90X yoga workout as three tiny workouts - moving asanas, balance poses, and stretching - that are 30 minutes each. If you "only" did 30 minutes, you still did a lot. You will be surprised how much you will have improved the next time you do that section of the workout.

So maybe the first time, just do as much of the moving asanas as you can. Next time do Section 1 and then as many of the balance poses as you can, and so on.

Or you can just do your favorites from each section and try adding a new pose as you go. Quite frankly, I skip right over the "Crane" pose right now. I'm just not interested in doing it, so out it goes!

The first couple of times I did Yoga X, it felt SO LOOONG, especially the first 40 minutes. The third time (I think), I only did about 40 minutes of it, skipping some segments here and there. I've substituted other yoga workouts for it about 1/2 the time(and have added a lot of youga to my collection, because I never really got into it before: P90X has turned me into a budding yogini!).

I really think that yoga is very important to the whole rotation. It works strength (it's an additional leg workout as well as a chest/shoulder/tricep workout), balance and flexibility.

I believe I was the one who just a few weeks ago said that Yoga wasn't for me I HATE it with all my heart. Well I'm in week 9 now of the P90X and I want to add that it is there for a reason. I never really feel like doing it when the day comes, but I'm so glad once I've done it. My whole system feels great. When I did strictly Cathe every so often (like every 3-4 weeks) I would get this kink in my back and have to back off for a while. The yoga has been the key to avoiding this pain and it has strengthened my whole body so that I can do all other workouts with more intensity. I can't explain it, but there is something about Yoga that brings it all together.

One note....do yoga at night and your rest will be incredible. I find myself falling into a deep sleep and when I do it in the morning, I feel peaceful all throughout the day. I find I'm breathing deeper, etc... Keep at it. I will probably never be a total yoga junkie, but I intend to keep one yoga day per week in my workouts from this point on, just one of those necessities.

P90X was my first Yoga workout. I like it much better after the first 30 minutes! I did finally get another workout to alternate with...Baron Baptiste Power Yoga and its only 70 minutes! I agree with Kathyrn and feel it is very important to the rotation, so maybe alternating it with a shorter Yoga might help...:)...Carole
