P E class only once a week

At my daughters school, each class has P.E. only once per week. I think this is terrible! I don't see how children can do their best mental work unless their body is conditioned and they have the chance to work out all that natural energy they have.
What about the school where your children are, what is the P.E. schedule like?
I also think the high school classes would benefit with aerobic classes with workouts such as Cathe's. I remember taking classes like tennis and soccer but spending a lot of the time standing around waiting for my turn to do something.

My 3rd grade son has PE 3 times a week and my 5th grade son (who is at the middle/jr high this year) has PE everyday.

I agree that it is terrible. I think children should have PE at least three times a week if not every day. It is good for them! :)

At our elementary school, they get cycled through PE so that one quarter they are doing it every day and the next quarter, not at all. In the high school, they have PE once a week. I agree this is not ideal, but I think it is due to the sheer number of students in the system. Frankly, I think they should all have to go out and run around the track first thing in the morning! That will get them ready to go! :)

My kids only have p.e. once a week, too. To counter their lack of activity in school, during the week they have to play outside (I am an evil, evil mommy! :)). I don't allow video games or tv through the week unless it is a special occasion and we go for walks to the park together. My DD just got into rollerblading, so I do that with her now, too. On the weekends, my son rides his bike with me while I run. Since I make sure they get plenty of excercise at home, I am not really worried about the lack of it at school any more.

At my DD's school she has PE T/Th one week, then the next is M/W/F...Not TOO bad...

On the other hand, she's decided to give up recess on that same schedule to be hall monitor...I told her last night that I REALLY disagree with a 9 year old giving up recess, to no avail...On the bright side she said to make up for it, the days that she IS hall monitor she wants to jump rope in the garage for 15 minutes with me before she does her homework...I was ok with it then!

Our elementary school has an hour of P.E. a week - either two days of 30 minute classes or one day of an hour.

In middle school, they go daily for 1/2 the school year.

In high school, it's only required in their freshman year and that's a 1/2 year course also.

This is a great idea! I was a P.E. reject, but now I teach step aerobics, and I could never have done it with the P.E. in my school.

I didn't have the hand-eye coordination for basketball, softball, volleyball, etc. The nicest thing my P.E. teacher ever said to me was "You just don't have any physical strength." But I had enough rhythm and determination to be a cheerleader, so she missed something!

My dream would be to teach aerobics and muscle sculpting to high school girls. Cathe's workouts would be great for their bodies, but better for their self-esteem.

My daughter takes P.E. once a week (not enough) but they have a great new playground for recess. In her P.E. class, she gets small beads as a reward for running back and forth. On her first quarter report card, her best subject was P.E. class.

In Illinois, P.E. (or gym or whatever!!) is required through high school. I used to hate this as a kid but now as a parent I think it's wonderful.

At ds' elementary they have always had PE 3x per week. Not too bad, I guess, especially considering he's not very active at all. He gained weight this past summer so I'm glad he's back to school for exercise. (and of course an education. Haha! ;-) ) I've tried to get him to do "fun" exercise but nothing has worked. :-(

My daughter has PE 3x a week for an hour each time. We're also very active at home, walking, riding bikes, playing at the park, etc.

I don't think we can put the burden of ensuring our kids get enough physical activity on the school system anymore. IMO, we have to take that responsibility on ourselves. The kids of the women (and men) who post on this site have great role models:)

I second that, Shelley!! It's NOT all about the schools...WE need to take responsibilty for our kids health and fitness! I'm sure that most on the board have active family lives (I know mine is!), but what about the others??

I'll give a great (or actually, "bad" example)...We had a sleepover this summer for a friend of my DD that I'd never met before...Anyway, she gets over to our house...A BEAUTIFUL Friday afternoon (about 75 and sunny)...Well, of course, after showing off the dog, the cats, the horse and the fish, Chelsea (my DD) wants to jump on the trampoline, what 9 year old can resist? This little girl jumped for about 2 minutes, and then sat on the swing and just WATCHED her...How can you NOT jump on a trampoline?? She's 9!

When I dropped her off the next morning after breakfast, her mom asked her if she had a good time..."Not really...They spend too much time outside (trampoline, dinner at the picnic table on the lawn and a bonfire WITH marshmallows before bed)...We didn't even get to watch any movies...". Sickening, isn't it?

I teach a kindergarten behavior class. We have P.E. once a week for 30 min. Of course, being a kindergarten teacher we are very active anyway...recess, singing and dancing, movement activities. I would LOVE to have P.E. more often, but I don't know where we would fit it in our schedule. Kindergarten is more like first grade used to be and we have a very FULL schedule. Also, children are taking more and more tests as are teachers and there are more and more academics to cover. By the time we schedule music, library, computer lab, art, science lab, and for some of my little friends speech and OT have to be factored in, keep up with the kindergarten academics, go on all the field trips, teach the replacement behaviors and social skills needed so my little ones can hopefully join a regular first grade class the following year...there is NO more time left in my day anyway.
