i live in virginia and this weekend is our tax free holiday off clothes and school supplies and certain other things that might pertain to school(calculators, laptops).

i did a big score myself for viola but i was wondering if other states that have sales tax on these items, also do a tax free holiday.

Must be nice!!!

Here in Chicago I'm surprised they haven't created a "pay EXTRA tax" holiday to put icing on the cake. Cook county boad just upped our sales tax to 10.5%. What a deal!!

NC has its tax free weekend from today until Sunday the 3rd - I'm going out each day with each kid OY! busy weekend for me

i am not sure how this came about in our state but maybe there is a way to petition legislators for at least one weekend in august before school that stores(esp big stores like target and wal-mart) take a little cut and give consumers a break esp for those that have bigger families or kids heading off to college. i think this is great help b/c to some 10-20 bucks saved isn't a huge deal but to me that is just under a half a tank of gas to get my buns to work.

You guys need to shop in PA! We do not have sales tax on clothing. ;) They tax us to death everywhere else though...

i used to live in NJ and they didn't have sales tax on clothes, toilet paper(and i think certain other paper items) or food(except candy, soda, and hot deli food items/prepared foods which seems fair in some sense). there is just about a sales tax on everything in VA but it varies. like clothing and food taxes are cheaper then say beer/tobacco taxes which are still less then electronics/movies taxes. we are taxed to death with so many different taxes but our properties taxes are cheaper(for now anyway LOL)

Here in CT we have a tax free week from August 17-23. I honestly didn't even know that, though until I just googled it.....

ETA: I guess it only pertains to clothing and shoes under $300. Does that mean pieces of clothing and sets of shoes must be under $300 or your total purchase must be under $300?....
It doesn't matter anyway, though. I'm such an airhead I'll probably forget all about the tax free week when it's here anyway.

allison it might differ from state to state but VA says as long as the clothing is under $100 a piece(includes shoes, undies, bras etc) that it qualifies. i think school supplies were under $35 a piece. i spent $100 on viola's clothes(4 skirts,4 printed tees,3 longer sleeve shirts,2 pairs of shoes,2 dresses, and 2 pair of knit tights only 4 things i found on clearance). on a separate order(different account i had to use) i bought dh's boxer and they were also tax free.

NJ doesn't tax what are called "necessities." So this includes shoes, clothes, groceries & a few other tidbits (now, how a Tastykake can be considered a "necessity" is beyond me, but there ya go). Our "sin taxes" are killer though. I can't even believe there's anyone left in this state who'd drink or smoke, it's so unbelievably expensive.

Kassia, when I lived in VA there was no sales tax on cigs. I think that's still the case. In fact, they outlawed smoking everywhere except the state house, which was just SO hypocritical. I always had to laugh when I went to Richmond--the capital is just this smelly, smoke-filled haze right in the midst of clean, fresh smelling buildings.

Ah, the power of the tobacco lobby!

They have it in MA and I think it applies to everything. They sort of had to do it b/c NH is so close for so many people and there isn't tax here at all. An hour can save you hundreds and most people don't blink an eye at taking the trip to save, especially on larger purchases.

As someone mentioned, NC has one this weekend. Taking the kiddies out tonight to hopefully beat the weekend crowds.
