Osteoporosis drugs

back in 2019 I was told I had osteoporosis. The doctor wanted me to take fosamax. I had 3 health care providers tell me not to take it - I didn't and this was before I was told to stay away from it. The max you should be on it is 5 years. It might help your bones but could ruin your jaw bone.

I have osteopenia for years and this is with me working out forever. I do take a supplement Strontium which I think is helping. I'm getting a dexa next month. The last one I had 3 yrs showed I had osteopenia so who knows if I really had osteoporosis.

Yea, I know what you mean. My dx was osteopenia. My oldest sister has osteoporosis- it's very bad - just walking can cause a bone to break in her foot & it's very slow to heal. Almost every woman I know in my age group has the osteopenia dx. Here's hoping working out and taking supplements is effective cuz I won't take the Rx.

It does make you wonder whether the osteopenia isn't just something we have to deal with as we age because threshold for dx is so easy to meet.
I've wondered about that too. I certainly don't want it to progress to osteoporosis but the push to Rx with potentially dangerous side-effects for an osteopenia dx instead of promoting more natural ways to combat it is troublesome. My previous provider's strong push made me wonder if she was getting a kickback. When I had severe pain, she just wanted me to put up with it, even though I told her I was up pacing through the night with the pain. My oldest sister's osteoporosis dx is due to her Rx of corticosteroids to combat her autoimmune diseases, so that's why her bone loss is so severe.

I'm not sure those conversations have ever occurred between me and my dentist...and would think that's the case for other women who would not receive those warnings either.

I have osteopenia and took Boniva for a few years and then doctor said I couldn't take it any longer - 2 years max. Boniva is no longer prescribed and was taken off the market in 2023. I didn't have any trouble with it. Haven't taken anything since and that was about 10 years ago. Really don't want to take any chemicals and would rather have supplements.

My PCM said that osteopenia is normal for post menopausal women. I continue to take a calcium supplement and eat more dairy . I had two coworkers who took Fosamax. One had to discontinue quickly because of pain, the other broke her femur just by walking. Femur breakage is actually a side of Fosamax.
