I just read this post on another board I go to, and I'm so freaked out right now. I love salmon and now I don't know if I can ever order it again.

What do you guys think? Here's the post:

"So my in-laws are coming into town this weekend from Ohio for a visit. I made reservations for Saturday night but wanted to cook them dinner tonight. I wanted to make something kind-of nice... impress them a bit.

The plan was to have grilled salmon & zuchinni, salad, and a home made cherry pie for dessert. (with fresh picked cherries from my parent's tree)

So I was getting everything ready last night. I went to Costco and bought the wild alaskan salmon.. a little more expensive than the farm raised. Spent $21 bucks on it. I got home, made a marinade, and was ready to put the fish in it..

I look down at the fish, and I thought I saw something move. I thought it was my imagination, so I got down to take a good look, and there was a WORM!!!! There was a thin dark WORM coming out of the flesh of the fish!! It was slowly wiggling around and poking his head around!

I thought I was going to throw up. I don't know if I'll be able to eat fish again without thinking about that.

I'm planning on taking the fish back to Costco. I can't wait to see the lady's face when she asks why I'm returning it...

Just had to share. Make sure to inspect salmon next time you make it..."

I really, really love salmon though. How can I make sure I'm buying fresh salmon? Someone else said the same thing happened when they bought it from Whole Foods!!

I don't normally purchase fish from whole foods, but have had a bad experience from the grocery store. I thought I was buying a fresh filet of salmon, but when I turned it around, the whole back was green! It was disgusting! Unfortunately, it got me so skeeved, I won't eat salmon anymore.

If you ever visited any kind of food processing plant you'd probably never eat again! Maybe you could think about it like this...it didn't happen to you specifically. You didn't see it with your own eyes, right?!

I don't know...when I hear this kind of stuff doesn't bother me. I've never had a really bad experience myself so I don't think about it much :).

I have to tell my SIL ASAP. She only buys her fish from there, and yes, including her salmon. That is so nasty. They should give you more than just your money back.

Do a websearch for fish and worms and you may never eat fish again. I guess they're very common in lots of different kids of fish - that's why they don't recommend eating raw fish - when you cook it though you kill the worms. My friend who is a server said that really nice restaurants will run their fish over a light board and pull out any worms before hand. He also said swordfish is disgusting - that they cut out huge tumors from the meat all of the time. Gross!

So true - years ago I worked in a chicken processing plant and let me tell you, if you saw what went on there you would NEVER eat chicken again. I'm talking processed chicken (chicken fingers, stuffed chicken breasts, hot wings, etc.).

My husband used to cook years ago and he said that pretty much every fish he prepped was wormy- especially sword fish (or any steak-y fish like salmon, etc,) He's never had swordfish since. Now think about what can be in lobster and shrimp...bottom feeders but they're so yummy :)

Yes, I think it is fairly common for fish to have worms. You probably can't entirely avoid it no matter where you buy your fish. I don't think it even has anything to do with whether the fish is fresh or not - they have worms when they're alive!

...and people wonder why I don't like fish! :p

Being a scuba diver I know that many sea life are dependent on one another for survival. There are many symbiotic relationships that exist. You sea big fish being flanked by smaller fish who are eating whatever is growing on the bigger fish and at the same time being hidden by the bigger fish. Also, you will see what are called "shrimp cleaning stations" where bigger fish actually stop to get a cleaning.

It's a whole other world down there

:)

Years ago, when I was in France, I was eating some filberts (hazel nuts) I had bought at a market. I bit into one, and in the center, there was a wiggly, squiggly little white worm (whole, thank goodness!). I wondered if there had been any in any of the nuts I'd already eaten.

I couldn't even look at a hazel nut for a long time after that. Unfortunately, hazel nuts were as prevalent in France as peanuts are here, so they were a bit difficult to avoid.

I can eat them now, but it took a looooong time to get to that point. (Longer, I think, than it took me to be able to listen to reggae music again, after living in the apartment next door to a reggae d.j.,, who played NOTHING but reggae--even Christmas songs-- day in and day out...only 4 different beats, at most. )

I was wondering when someone was going to metion the real hazard in fish (mercury) instead of picking on a poor little worm.

OK, I don't think I want to eat seafood or meat anymore. Emily, what's that book you read about becoming a vegetarian! ;-)

My DH cracks up at me anyway when I eat any kind of meat/seafood because I examine everything!

Ewwwww, now I'll have to be even more thorough.

Do you know what's worse than finding a worm in your apple? Finding half a worm... Ba dump bump. I remain undeterred. If we only knew what we have inadvertantly eaten, I dareway, it would boggle our minds. It's bonus protein and I could probably use a bit more protein in my diet. Just kidding. I'd free Wormy. I buy Trader Joe's frozen wild sockeye salmon so I know any worms have frozen to death prior to my consumption. ;)

This story has me so grossed out that I couldn't even eat my chicken I made for dinner last night! I too now may be forced to become a vegetarian. I usually eat only chicken and fish for my main protein. I hate red meat and pork. But now the two things I usually have for dinner are gross. I hope I can put this behind me at least on the chicken. For now NO WAY could I eat salmon and not think of this!

Bobbi my new diet maybe carmel light frapacinos!
