OMG - pet peeve

I really don't like the expression "Oh My God" and we hear it all the time! I find myself saying it without thinking, and I have decided to make a real effort to stop. I just can't stand the way it sounds! Does it bug anyone else?

Yes, me! I don't realise I'm saying it....it's such a bad habit. I'd like to stop so that I don't offend somebody else.

That's what I'm trying to say too! It gets the point across, but it's less offensive - to me and hopefully to anyone else!

Mine is always Oh my gosh. I am also offended at the other phrase used...just plucks every nerve in my body when I hear the God part. It can be used so carelessly and so unnecessarily so.

Charlotte~~

I don't like Oh My God either. I always mean Oh My Gosh when I say OMG. Of course, no one knows that but me, so I could still be offending someone. :(

I usually say oh my goodness, unless I am truly astounded by something, then I use the G word. I'm sorry if it offends anyone, and I will try my best to curb it:)

Yes Carolyn. It bothers me too. I say,"Oh my gosh" all the time, or, "Oh my goodness"! I feel OMG is using God's name in vain which of course we are taught NOT to do. Oh my gosh, THANKS for bringing it up. :7

I am so guilty of that. I really don't notice it unless I write it out & then I either rephrase my emotion or write it out as Oh my Gawd! Bad habit, i need to work on.

the saying of the god part doesn't bother me, partly because i'm not religious in any way. so i'm guilty of using it occasionally. but it has gotten really old to hear all the little 14 year olds running around saying it. phrase in point "like, oh my god! like, you know?" *hair twirl, gum pop*

Gosh, that's what I mean too. i really thought OMG stood for Oh my gosh! Oops, won't be using that abbreviation anymore!

I've let it slip a few times and my four year old says "mommy, you can't say that"...thanks to her I haven't slipped that one for over a year. Thank goodness for sharp little ears!

Me, too. Got it from my Grandma. If I am astounded though, I can turn into a potty mouth pretty quick. Not that it's any less offensive than using the G word. Oh, pooh! Now I guess I have to work on that.

Mona

I make a point not to say it! Don't like it either!

Actually, I just thought "gosh" was a slang name for God so, I don't even say that! Guess I'll have to find out what gosh stands for/means!

My daughter hears many many people say that and we've told her not to say it. She listens! Thankfully! But how long will it be until it just slips out after hearing it over and over again.

I don't think gosh is a slang name for God. (Have you ever heard of anyone praying to gosh? LOL!) It's just a word. Like shoot or darn. I wouldn't be worried about using gosh. Of course, that's totally your call. :)

Okay, I thought I might as well check it out. This is what I found about "gosh":

gosh >exclamation> informal used to express surprise or give emphasis.
-ORIGIN euphemism for God.

euphemism >noun> a mild or less direct word substituted for one that is harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing.
