OMG Kettlebells

I usually don't post anything in these forums. I'm basically a lurker and read them pretty much everyday. I' not a very good typist and it takes me forever. However I must share my kettlebell experience. I have been doing Cathe for about four years.I have about 20 dvd's and do them faithfully. My diet is good and I thought I was in pretty good shape. I started noticing all the kettlebell talk in the forums and thought I would give it a try. I went to a class once a week for about 6 wks. Loved it, but I love working out at home, so i purchased a 18 lb. kettlebell and The Art Of Strenght Providence DVD. and started doing this about three weeks ago. This is why I Had to write. My body is totally changing. I cannot believe the results I'm getting with this workout. It is truly amazing! All my problem areas are shaping up. I'm 47 and my rear view is not what it was years ago. No matter how many lower body rotations I do Nnothing seemed to lift it. In three weeks of kettlebell my rear has lifted and firmed with the nice little dent in the side. I actually feel it looks bettter now than when I was in my thirties!Even my arms (always had the tricep flap) are sculpting out. I just believe it. If anyone is on the fence about these workouts I urge you to try them. I can't wait to get some more DVD's.I just wanted to share my experience.

OH MAN!!! I really didn't need to read this! Now I WANT KB's, too!!! I have spent SO much $$$$ in the past few months on my limited Cathe collection, STS pre-order, equipment... and now this! :D... MUST.... RESIST.... URGE.....................................

at least until after STS, but good to know that they really work! thanks for posting!

don't resist Dani

Dani , I once did a whole month of lower body. (Butts& Guts, Pyramid Lower, gym Style ect.) and did not get the results I'm seeing in just a few weeks of kettlebell. And one more thing i forgot to mention in my last post. the workout time is so much Shorter! In& out , great results I'm a convert!!

Variety...

IS the spice of life right? Might not be today, but now I am very interested in KB's! I will be back home next weekend and will definately look into them (traveling this coming week)!! I also know that there are many more like you that have really seen a difference in their body with KB's....

thanks for your input! :)

That's very cool -- I'm also 47 and just started with kettlebells -- I've definitely noticed it's really a calorie burner for the time you spend! Better than running, I think. So, I'm looking forward to your results!! :) Thanks for coming out of lurkdom to post for us.

I'm so glad you posted this. I just started taking private lessons from a senior RKC instructor. The first time I did swings, I was huffing and puffing within minutes:confused: I'm the same age and at a point where I'm not seeing much improvement so your results are giving me hope. I would love to lose the batwings and tone my core & backside more. Once I get my form down, I plan to buy some AOS dvd's to use at home in between classes.

Aren't kettlebells so much fun?! That's great that you've been getting such great results!

I've also been getting great definition in my abs and legs/rear since adding the kettlebell workouts in. You can get such a great workout in such a short period of time. I haven't done any for three weeks since I've been focusing on P90X, but I think that I will go back to adding in one day since I miss doing them.

Thank you thank you for posting this! I too just started KB's, this week as a matter of fact. I also bought the 18 pound KB with the AOS Providence DVD that I learned of on these boards.

I really LOVE the workout, and I'm just so happy to hear of your results. Congrats by the way! I was starting to worry that if I liked it this much, it might not work, you know what I mean?

I just read about and bought the Lauren Brooks DVD yesterday.

Would you mind sharing a little more info? How many times per week are you doing the KB workout? And are you doing other weight workouts too?

Thanks!

I love KB's for many of the reasons stated here : time-efficiency and booty-boosting benefits chief among them!

When I'm really time crunched, I've been doing Lauren Brooks' 15 minute workout (it comes out to be about that long including the joint mobilization warm-up). It gets a lot done in a short time. (I keep intending to do the longer workout, but I really love the short one so much!)

I've been doing it 5x per week

Just to give you a little more info. I have been doing the kettlebell 5 times per week. I don't know if I should be doing that or not . I'm just so please with the results I don't want to stop! I have not been doing anything else, just the kettlebell. I too purchased STs and I figure by the time it ships I'll be a little burnt out on the bells and ready to change it up. I don't want to be redundant however I really can't believe the way this workout changes your body. When I took the class I remember looking at the instructors butt (she was 53) and thinking to myself that her body looked twenty years younger! It is definately a booty workout! Maybe I'll ask my daughter (she's seventeen & very computer savvy) to help me post a picture(if I'm no too embarassed!) I'm glad this info is helping people and I too am glad I came out of lurkdome and posted!

this might be a stupid question, but has/does anyone ever worry about the KB slipping out of your hand or dropping it on your foot when you do the release moves? my hands get really sweaty when I work out and I don't like to wear lifting gloves. Do they have handle grips? I have only seen one MFG of KB's so not sure if it is a standard thing or if they are as many varieties as with standard DB's... just curious :)

I love my kettlebell workouts! I was just noticing today in the gym that the upper part of my glutes looks higher! Super duper.

The only thing is, I feel like the kettlebells do not provide a super workout for the triceps, back and rear delts, so I am doing some upper body and lower body too, along with three KB workouts a week. Wow, your results make me wanna do 5 workouts a week!:)

Don't be embarassed! Post a pic please to inspire the rest of us!

WHERE to buy these

can anyone tell me where you are ordering these workouts from? is one site cheaper to order than another? service delivery differences?? TIA!!

take care

Dani,

When I attended a fitness boot camp, I dropped a KB during a figure eight move. It didn't hit my foot just the floor. It was a tad embarrassing! My sister actually clocked herself in the head with a KB during a similar boot camp workout. She ended up a nice bruise. We were told that if you couldn't handle a particular move just drop the bell. I don't wear gloves but I always have a towel with me to dry my hands. I was instructed not to wear gloves with kettlebells due to the fact that you need "feel" the grip as you do in snatches.

Ok, so no gloves.... but what about the blister factor? I'm getting a nice giant one on my middle right-hand finger -- hurts. Do I just tough it out and hope for a callous?

I got AOS Providence from performbetter.com, it was on sale at the time, it no longer is. Other than that I have not found it discounted, you can also buy it directly from the artofstrength.com site, but not sure who has better shipping.

The Lauren Brooks DVD I bought on ebay from one of the ebay vendor type people, it was not an auction, it's a new copy, but ended up being a few dollars less than from the Lauren Brooks website, and I preferred to not provide my credit card on yet another site. :p

Unfortunately, these dvds don't seem to be super popular, so they are likely produced in smaller amounts, are kind of pricey 40-50 dollars, and are not carried on too many sites. But the AOS Providence, is a really great DVD and worth every penny. Hopefully the Lauren Brooks will be good too.

My first post here

Well, I finally made it over here from VF and of course I noticed the kettlebell thread. I too love kettlebells. They are such a great, functional, time-efficient workout! Lauren Brooks is my favorite kb instructor--her dvd is great (Kathryn-get on with doing the 40 minute workout!). She has a 12-minute and 40-minute workout, along with a great joint mobility warmup and fabulous tutorial. Gloria-You can buy the dvd (On the Edge) for free shipping at www.totalfitnessdvds.com. It cost about $35.00 and you can use a 10 percent off discount code. I use it so much that it's paid for itself! There are also the Iron Core workouts, which, although low on the fun factor IMO, are also good workouts if you're just getting started. AOS Providence, though expensive, is very well done. There's a cheaper remake called the Kettlebell Way (with Beth Chamberlin) that also includes a tutorial.

dbelden1-I've dropped a kettlebell a couple of times--it's no biggie. (It didn't go far and didn't hit my foot!) My hands do get sweaty, but you can always use some chalk if it bothers you a lot. I thought about wearing gloves to avoid calluses, but it would really affect the grip and 'feel' of the bell. I just sand down my palms and keep rolling!

Another kettlebell devotee

Wow,47 must be the magic age for discovering kb's!! I am also 47, and because of doing kettlebells for the past 6 months, my body looks (and feels) better than it ever has. I run, lift, spin, and none of those activities has given me the same results as kettlebells. I have AOS Newport, Sarah Lurie's circuit, and Keith Weber's Extreme Cardio Kettlebell. Also, you can find excellent workouts on the various kettlebell websites.

Just wanted to say I'm with you all!

Jan

what all do you need for AOS dvd?

What equipement is needed in this dvd? Just the kettlebell? Thanks in advance,
Laura

Yup, just the kettlebell. They recommend the 8kg (18lb) for women. This was a challenging weight for some of the exercises, but I felt I needed a heavier one for others, so I just ordered a 12 kg too.
