Ok old Firmies - the new TLT's?

>I am really interested in these workouts, but being six

>Please keep the reviews coming! They really sound great!

Michelle, I'm in my tenth lunar month pregnant and are doing these workouts. I'd say 85-90% of the worktouts are doable. I can not do the planks and very deep lunges (but I can lunge). But you're right these will be GREAT for after the baby arrives.

Carol,

When you finish your rotation cooking, could you share it with us? I ordered all the new set. The tracking said it would be here today. Can't wait.

Thanks

Carol,

Could you clarify somethings for me? I have the 1st set of TLT's, I think there was a 2nd set and this must be the 3rd set of TLT's? Also, I wonder why they don't sell the other 2 sets anymore?

Thanks,
Debbie

P.S. I'm also assuming that all 3 sets are different.

I'm thinking these TLT's would be a great compliment to my triathlon training I'll be starting on Mon. I need endurance type workouts only and was originally planning on using PH, CTX strength, SS/PP/L&g etc. My core could also definitely stand some work. Can someone tell me if these would fit my bill as being much more leaning towards endurance and less on building strength?

Hi Debbie, Tracie made two sets before these under Tracie Long Productions - TLP's. Core Foundations, Dynamic Strength & Power, and Functional Strength were first, followed by the "Yorktowns" - Core Cardio and Core Strength, so named because they were filmed aboard the USS Yorktown. I'm not sure of all the details and I think there are legal reasons Tracie can't say, but she won't be selling them on her new site. It's my understanding they may be selling them again on the old site but they aren't right now. She has since renamed her company Tracie Long Training, because she said she is a trainer, and she wanted a name that more appropriately reflected that. Hope this helps!

I just found my dvd's outside on the porch! Have no idea when they were delivered today. x( x( x(

Can't wait to pop in Susan first thing tomorrow. I was with the Firm waaaayyy back in the 80's and only stopped buying their workouts when they started 'reinventing' workouts from previous ones. Not into spending my money twice on the same product. They lost me as a customer then but I had liked the Firm up to that point.

I've had a chance to review the other 2 work outs: Finding Your Core with Susan Harris and Strength in Movement with Jen Carmen. I would like to reiterate that I've never been a Firmie and I was not familiar with any of these instructors.

Let me just say, now that I've seen Finding Your Core, that I think it's a shame Susan Harris didn't lead ALL of these work outs! Her instruction, form pointers, technique--EVERYTHING--is heads and tails above the other instructors. Tracie comes in second, and if you can only afford 3 work outs pass on the Strength in Movement led by Jen Carmen.

Finding Your Core is an excellent full body work out that incorporates the stability ball and 3 - 10 lb dumbells. The moves are creative and fun and I can't wait to do this one. Susan's cueing and form pointers are excellent and you could almost do this w/o without looking at the television. My only criticism of this w/o is the background exerciser demonstrating the advanced moves. She wore a pained expression on her face throughout the w/o and I couldn't tell if she was mad or in pain--LOL!

Strength in Movement is a full body w/o that uses 2 to 5 lb squishy medicine balls and 3 - 10 lb dumbells. It's mostly standing work. Jen Carmen didn't do anything for me at all and I can't see myself ever using this particular w/o. I thought she demonstrated poor form--her shoulders often looked hunched to me. If you have bad knees you may need to modify certain moves like the pivotal squats, which seem awkward. I just didn't like it or her. The music wasn't very good either. I think the exerciser in the back demonstrating the advanced moves would have been a better choice to lead this work out--or Susan Harris who, in my opinion, we didn't get enough of in this series!

My ratings in order of preference:
1. Finding your Core with Susan Harris
2. Better Burn Better Buns with Tracie Long
3. Endurance for Movement with Tracie Long

I wouldn't recommend Strength in Movement.

Michele:)

Thanks Michele. I was going to do the SIM today but after seeing your review I think I'll try FYC - and IMO Susan Harris is just about the best there is. Great reviews - thanks for your time and post!

I wrote a post here yesteday, but it didn't post. Hmmm..

I've just previewed the new TLT's, but I like what I see:
emphasis on functional fitness, range of motion, core strength.
I really like the dynamic stretches that follow the warm-up. Seems like with the new talk of how static stretches at the beginning of a workout can have a negative effect on the workout (especially strength, more instructors would be doing something like this.

I think these would be an excellent complement to more traditional strength workouts like Cathe's. And perhaps a necessary one, as they work the stabilizing muscles that can help prevent injury and actually make your body better at lifting heavier.

One thing that bugged me: the girl in pink in Susan's workout looked like she hated being there. I couldn't tell if she looked more depressed, uncomfortable, or just p.od! She did smile ONCE, though! (Not that I want a fake smile plastered on someoone's face the whole time, but she could at least look like she's not hating every single minute of the workout!). And was it cold in the studio during the BBB workout, or do implants just nipple-up more easily (I notice this on some of the Firm instructors as well. Nice to have a forumm where I can actually ask that question!).

LOL Kathryn!! I noticed the same thing. She really didn't look happy to be there at all.

Yes--headlights were on high beam! I'm always puzzled by "fitness" instructors that go for breast implants. Sends a poor message if you ask me:-(

Michele

I agree with Kathryn that these workouts will complement strength workouts. I can see these workouts used in a variety of ways. Tracie said on her forum that this week she did a BBBB-type workout; then because her butt was sore, the next day she did Yoga; and then because her back was sore, she did cardio the next day; then she did a day for strength training.
So whatever your focus and your goals are, whether you need more cardio to burn fat, or what to do more weight training, I believe these functional fit workouts has a place in any rotation.
I know for myself, I am going to do these workouts often. I also have them placed with honor next to my Cathe's in easy reach so I can grab them in case of a fire. :9

And Kathyrn, daggone it, I've not done the BBBB workout yet and now I am going to be concentrating on breasts instead of what I am supposed to be doing. }( :9 ;) ;) Just kidding.

Just did FYC - wow - I miss Sasan Harris' cueing! Takes me back to Firm volumes 1 and 4 - and I loved it. Neat, original moves too.

This was the first workout I previewed, and the first thing I noticed (especially since Tracie was "crooked" as well as "chilled"!).

My sentiments exactly. Especially since they don't even go for something that would be proportionate, but for the "D" or even "double D" hooters! I've seen several Firm instructors "before" and "after," and I think they look just fine, even BETTER, "before."

I love the new BSS4 workouts, but I could do without Stephanie and Allie's "enhancements' in my face all the time. On some workouts, I really wish they'd cover up more. It's like I'm working out with Hef's playmates!

I posted this at VF and on Tracie's site as well. I absolutely LOVED Jen's workout!! Here's my review:

Jen Carman of Firm fame leads Tracie Long Training's "Strength In Movement". Approximately 52 minutes including final stretch, this workout uses a medicine ball and various sized weights. Jen is upbeat without being fake, her cueing is flawless, and she looks fantastic!

The set is inside Tracie's new gym in Charleston, SC overlooking the harbor. Cindy Thorpe shows some advanced modifications and another exerciser named Lindsey shows beginnier modifications. This workout is TOUGH! I loved it! It was so much FUN! The time flew by and at the end I felt worked out - not wiped out! My one suggestion .. make the music a bit louder. I loved the music in this one but I wish I could have heard it better.

I was already tired from the warm up which uses the med ball in dynamic stretching and light cardio sequences. Lindsey has I believe a 1 or 2 pound ball, Jen has either a 3 or 4, and Cindy is sporting a 5 pound ball. They use the squishy ones and you really do need something like that as opposed to a larger one you can't grip. I didn't have one, so I used a small 3# dumbbell this time.

We then use heavy weights (I used 10# bells) while we balance on one leg, lunge back with the other, and then press overhead. This move will be familiar to TLP fans. It's super tough and tests your balance! We then do rows balancing on one leg, then biceps curls.

Next is cardio using the ball. We dip with overhead presses, progressing to lifting the opposite knee while twisting to that side holding the ball. I love how functional fitness moves in Tracie's workouts show all those progressions! It gives you something to work towards. Lindsey uses a dowel for balance in this segment. Your arms get tired so don't use a heavy ball unless you're familiar with this and have no shoulder issues.

Next Jen says to pick up light weights. Listen to her! There are rotator cuff moves in the next sequence and even though it's weight work, your heart rate will stay up there. We do those "draw the sword" moves it's hard to explain. Think of reaching down with a weight to where the hilt would be and then drawing it up over your head to get ready to fight. That's the best way I can describe it.

Next come squats where you hold the low position and tap back, side, and back. OUCH! I used 8# only because there is scaption in between and I already knew to be ready for that. And now you know as well! We do more swordplay too so don't go too heavy, especially if you have shoulder issues. We then do box squats which are harder than they look, and there is time right before them to heavy up if you want to.

Next is tricep work and you may want to use lighter weights at first until you get used to the moves. They are deceptively difficult and your arms do get very tired. We do across the body moves, pushing the arm back with the palm facing forward, and what Jen calls stomp and throw, which was a little tricky for me but I finally figured it out. Then we pulse back with palms facing back this time and it's fast and you REALLY feel it by then!

Cardio with the med ball again, and this is the highest impact in the whole workout. Lindsey shows grounded moves. We shuffle with progression to really fun pendulum moves!! This segment was a blast!! The arms are working the entire time so again use a lighter ball if you have shoulder issues. Your outer thighs and glutes will burn in this segment too!!

Squats with overhead presses are next and I used 10# dumbbells without trouble here. Then tricep pushups where Jen and Cindy are on light weights and Lindsey is on the floor. You need the weights nearby though since you take turns lifting one arm to the back while doing a triceps press. Cindy is on her toes to do this and Jen is on her knees. We then stand and do rhomboid work with rotator cuff moves, so you may want to keep the light weights when you stand after the push-ups.

Cardio again with the ball where we circle our arms and move side to side, then progress to adding front mambos slow then fast, and finally adding what Jen calls play it safe, which is passing the ball side to side in opposition of your moving legs. It takes coordination and is really fun!

Next are functional one arm rows where you twist the upper body along with the dumbell. Jen had 8# and I had 10#, and I couldn't tell what the other two used. This progresses to lifting the opposing knee which really tests your balance, so don't be a hero and go too heavy at first or you'll fall. I picked up the 8's again for side lunges with inner and outer thigh sweeps, which progress to one leg squats with the opposing leg to the rear and arms out in front. YOWZA!! This was tough!!

Light weights again for delt work. It's very different than what you're used to - this is not your momma's delt work!! My shoulders really felt this with only 3# bells! On the floor then and we do oblique twists with one foot on the ball, which we roll in on every other twist. It's very hard to do and I kept losing my ball. At this point I used my Oof ball, but I think a squishy one might stay put easier. We then hold the ball between our knees and do reverse curls.

The last is bridge work. You keep the hips lifted and walk the feet first in and out, then front and back. VERY difficult to stay lifted and your glutes and hams will burn without weights here, but if you don't stay lifted it will seem too easy. Then we use weights but don't go too heavy because we lift one leg and pulse the hips, then sweep the leg in and out slowly. OUCH!!

The final stretch is dynamic involving first plank work, then standing moves. FANTASTIC workout and I absolutely adore it!! A++!!!

Wow Carol!

I would say that my assessment of the Jen Carmen w/o is about a 180 from yours. I intensely disliked this work out. I thought Jen Carmen used poor form with hunched shoulders, the cueing was okay but not great, there were few if any form pointers, and this was the only w/o of the four where I didn't like the music. JMHO. Those of you who are Jen Carmen fans would probably like this w/o--I had never heard of her before.

Michele:)

Hi Michele, Jen led quite a few Firm workouts before Anna sold it to GoodTimes. She first showed up in the Tri Trainer series, which now have new names. I think they were released sometime in 1997 or 1998. After Anna sold the Firm she did some workouts for the "new" Firm before finally joining Tracie Long at her new gym sometime in the past couple of years. I can't honestly say I've ever seen her use poor form. Hey, we aren't all going to like every single workout, you know? That's why it's so wonderful we now have so much from which to choose. We've come a long way in the world of home workouts! I remember when there was hardly anything except Kathy Smith, Joanie Greggains, and Jane Fonda. I'm glad you're enjoying the other TLT's.

I don't know if you know this since you're new to VF, but there's an exchange forum there where you can swap your workouts. I know someone would love to have Jen's workout since there are already listings there asking for TLT's. I've found real gems on there by trading away what I didn't care for or no longer used. I collected every single Firm BSS2 and BSS3 from that forum! You know what they say ... one man's junk is another man's treasure! I believe there's also a swap forum on ya-ya's as well, but I'm not registered on there.

I previwed the Core workout with Susan Harris but I'm just wondering if anyone else noticed that it's early in the day when they started filming and it's dark outside when they finish? I don't know why I notice these things:)
