OK Dani. Are you ready for that 20 miler?

It's this weekend, right?

I did mine last Sunday and feel pretty good about my time. When I hit 3 hours of running a little devil (or maybe an angel really!) popped up on my shoulder and tried to convince me that 3 hours of running was enough preparation and that it would be just fine for me to walk. It was a good thing that I had the fortitude to hold on for 10 more minutes and finish it running and not walking!

I've got 2 1/2 weeks until I run my marathon on October 1st. I believe yours is the following weekend? According to the latest Runner's World Deena Castor will be also running the Chicago marathon trying for a sub 2:20. Incredible! I'm only hoping for a sub 4 hour marathon.

GOOD LUCK this weekend and have fun!!!! :D :D :D

Thanks so much Debbie!!! Awwwww!
Congrats Elaine on finishing the 20 miler!!

Elaine, I am freaking out about my 20 miler this weekend. OMG! http://chittielounge.com/board/images/smiles/icon_eek.gif I'll be happy once I complete it. I really will. My lower back has been bothering me the past few days. I don't know what I did! But it feels a little better today. I'm supposed to run 10 miles tonight (after work), 5 tommorow and then 20 on Sunday. I think I just have to mentally prepare for this weekend more than anything.

sub 4 hour marathon? That's great!

Mine will be around 5 to 5 1/2 I'm hoping. Yes, it is being held on October 9th.

Thank you also for telling me about the article in the October issue of Runners World. I went and picked up a copy.

I ran 18 not too long ago. What's 2 more miles??? Right???

TeeHee!! No problem!!!

Thanks again for thinking of me Elaine. You are so sweet!!

"I ran 18 not too long ago. What's 2 more miles??? Right???"

Exactly, Dani! You are in the right mind set!! I bet you'll
do great. This is the hardest week ever and as you already know, after the 20 miles it's all about cutting back and getting some rest so you'll be ready for the big day. Oh, and believe me when I say that running the actual marathon will be easier mentally than the 20 mile run you'll do this weekend. :D :D :D

I just want to say congratulations to Elaine and wish good luck to Dani. By the way, Debbie's post made me laugh with the pink ladies' cheering section.

I have been thinking of the 3 of you ladies non stop lately! Dani, Elaine and Carole..."I want to be like them". You guys give me so much inspiration and motivation. I think of how hard your working and it gives me strength. I cannot wait for the day when I am as tough as you guys running 20 miles!!!

This Saturday is my first 1/2 marathon and I will be thinking of all 3 of you for power!

Dani, when running your 20 miles this weekend, please remember how much I admire your endurance and hope so much that one day I will be doing what you are doing! Truely amazing!

SARAH!! Good luck this Saturday with the 1/2 marathon!! I'll be thinking of you! I just know you can do it!!!!!!!!!!! That is so awesome!

Thank you all for your encouraging words! I'm going to be thinking of you all, and I know that'll help me hang in there!! ((((HUGS)))

Hi Elaine & Dani!!

Congrats Elaine & good luck Dani!! I too admire you & Dani so much. I just started jogging this summer & it truly takes all of one's willpower to jog.

Two questions for you & Dani: Did both of you follow the instructions on coolrunning when you first started jogging? Is this how you increased your mileage? And when you run, do you use a gliding motion? I always have joggers passing me by they're so FAST!! I feel inadequate. Any help is appreciated.

Again YOU GO GIRLS YOU ROCK!!! Best, Kathy:D

Hi Kathy. I followed the novice training schedules from www.halhigdon.com

I first started with training for the 8K.
http://www.halhigdon.com/8K/8knovsch.htm

Then I trained for a 10 miler/15K using this schedule:
http://www.halhigdon.com/15Ktraining/15Knovsch.htm

Now I am on the marathon training for novice runners using this schedule: (I am on week 15)
http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/Mar00novice.htm

Ignore the fast (greyhound) runners. Go at your own pace. Eventually you will get faster on your own. I like to run with my heartrate around 135-140.

I'm not sure about the gliding motion. (not sure what that is) But I try to focus on moving forward instead of moving up and down. It sounds kind of like gliding to me.
Good luck Kathy!

Thank you Carole!!

:) :7

Hi Dani! Thank you so much for helping me your wonderful! That's exactly what I meant by "gliding." I seem to have a leap motion (don't know how to describe it). I think I'm picking my knees up too high. I'll also have to be fitted for proper running shoes.

Thanks again! Kathy:*

You're welcome Kathy!

I looked up some more info for you:

Stride mechanics

All of your effort should directed forward. There should be very little up and down motion. Runners that bounce or hop when they run are wasting energy. They are also putting excessive stress on the knees, hip and back. You should feel as if you are gliding along. Imagine you are running with a beanbag on your head. If you bounce too much the beanbag will fall off.

Your stride should be quick and light. Visualize trying to sneak up on someone while you are running. Your steps should be light and quiet. If your steps are heavy and noisy, you are running with too much up and down motion, or are leaning forward too much.

You should not exaggerate your knee lift when running long distances. A high knee lift is much more important when sprinting or when running hard for the finish line. An exaggerated knee lift will require the use of too much energy to maintain for a long period of time. Knee lift is a very misunderstood term. Many believe that knee lift means to lift you knee straight up, which results in a bouncy, up and down motion which wastes a lot of energy. A proper knee lift should feel like you are driving your knee forward, not up. A forward knee drive will result in a low to the ground and efficient forward running motion.

Oh yeah...Dani...what did you do to your back??? Have you tried spending extra time on your hamstring stretches? I have had low back issues since my high school days thanks to a freaking drunk driver, not to mention serious sciatic nerve issues. Since I stretch my hamstrings tons everyday, I have had little to no low back issues. Sometimes when running a hill my sciatic will "pinch" but I just drive my thumb in there and it seems to take care of it!

How the back problem isn't a huge issue! Nurse and baby it! Don't forget to tell us how the loooooong run goes! What a feeling, though, huh? Never feel more accomplished!;-)

Sarah, I don't know what I did to my back. I just woke up one morning a few days ago and it was killing me. It's getting better. I will definitely try streching out my hamstrings more. Thank you so much for that tip!!!!

I will definitely let you now how the run goes!!! Please let us know how yours goes too.
:) :) :)
