Oil Pulling

Does anyone do this? Putting coconut (or other) oil in your mouth for 20 min, swishing it around and it pulls bacteria & toxins out of your mouth, then you spit the oil and germs into the trash.

Oil Pulling For A Brighter Smile and Better Health by Bruce Fife

I've seen so much about it lately, it's mainly for oral health (helping teeth & the mouth stay cleaner, whiten teeth, reduce plaque build up) but some claims have said it helps with other ailments too.

Just curious!

Thanks,
Tracy

Tracy, I oil pull each morning. I am dealing with quite a few health issues, which, unfortunately, is also impacting my oral health. I really do believe it helps. If I skip two days in a row, I notice around my front lower teeth, my gums are not as tight.

I cannot say I noticed significant improvements regarding other areas of my health as others report on various websites. I will say, a colleague of mine started doing it and had a significant detox reaction. For her, I do believe it was cleansing more than simply her mouth.

I hope this helps. If you do try it, just remember you do not need to be too vigorous with your "swishing." Just gently move the oil around your mouth.

Oil recommendations

I was just looking into starting this for oral health reasons mostly. Any recommendations on brands and where to get it?

I have been oil pulling for just over a year. I'm healthy so I can't speak on having any health issues resolved, but my oral health has vastly improved! My entire life I have had inflamed gums which bleed heavily when at the dentist. I have only been to the dentist once since I started OP but that visit was amazing--no bleeding (an absolute rarity) and markedly less plaque buildup.
My teeth did whiten within the first week, my hair got softer, knees felt more supple, and I believe that OP reduces the fluid buildup under your eyes. How's that for side benefits?:D
I do it first thing in the morning before brushing, drinking, eating, and last thing after brushing at night.
The premise is that bacteria enters your body through your mouth so oil pulling prevents them from going in and causing health issues.
Bruce Fife has 2 or 3 books on the topic.

I use coconut oil and you can get that at Trader Joe's and Costco. Most stores carry it now, and a jarred one is preferrable (blegh, plastic).

There was a thread last February or so about this topic too, which is what got me started.

Good luck! Report back to us on your progress. I'd love to hear your experiences.

Thanks for the feedback y'all! I'm anxious to give it a try as soon as I can get by the store for a refill of my regular coconut oil. Did y'all have any trouble at first (i.e., gag reflex) or anything?

I oil pull in the evgs while watching coronation street. It's tough to get to 20 minutes at first. And yes, it can be difficult to do as air builds in your mouth, you cannot speak to your family etc... I do not have time in the mornings to oil pull - that's why I do it at night.

When I first started doing it, I noticed I would blow my nose and have what felt like a big sinus clear out. Gross - I know. Just sharing. Also, my teeth whitened and red wine no longer seems to stain my teeth. My gums feel and look better too. I got braces in my mid 30's which caused a small area in my lower gums to recede a bit. Oil pulling seems to have helped that. My mouth just feels cleaner - if that's possible. Way less bacteria build up over night in my mouth too. It's supposed to help you sleep better as well. Once you start - it's easy to keep going. Good luck.

I don't do this daily, just twice a week while I have a face mask on before bed, cleaning the bathroom, etc...My BFF (am I too old to say that?) has been doing it for a year, and at last checkup, her dentist asked what she was doing since her gums looked AMAZING! Swish SLOWLY (so you don't create too much spit, you DO need to know that!)...

I do it with coconut oil for 4 minutes. This last dental cleaning they told me my teeth were perfect. They have never done that before. I don't know for certain if it was the oil pulling but that was the only thing I was doing differently.

I had my first OP session this morning and it went well. It's definitely something I hope I'll get used to the more I do it. I let the coconut oil dissolve in my mouth before I starting swishing because the solid texture grossed me out a bit. And I did swish nice & slow. I used 1 tsp and did it for just under 20 min. By the end, my mouth felt really full so I was READY to spit it out, so I don't know if I could do more than 1 tsp  I'm wondering if doing it twice a day for 10 min would be as beneficial as once a day for 20ish min? RapidBreath, that's great news your dentist saw such good results with you doing it for 4 min, so maybe reducing my time would work fine. I look forward to my next dental appt to see what they say. They are always griping about the plaque on my teeth but I floss & use a Sonicare toothbrush so I've never known what else I can do...until now, right? :D

I appreciate all of your responses and I'm happy to hear y'all have gotten good results from OP

Thanks again,

Tracy

I tried it once last week and it totally grossed me out to have all that oil in my mouth! However, I guess I will give it another try now that I am reading of its benefits.

I just got the organic coconut oil at Trader Joe's for 5.99

@Tracy, try sticking it out. It grosses me out a bit too until the oil melts but I am already seeing results! My skin seems smoother and more radiant and my mouth and teeth feel cleaner. I can't tell if my teeth are any whiter yet but either it's all in my head ;) or I really am seeing these changes. Try starting out with smaller amounts too, I just am doing 1 tsp right now. I'm not sure if I'll be able to build up to using 1 TBSP or not. I've been doing 10 min morning and night instead of 20 min once a day.

I have also done this and feel that it has a lot of benefits. When I'm not up for the pulling, I will brush my teeth/gumline (using my Sonicare brush) with a big glob of coconut oil as "toothpaste." That seems to really work as well - my last checkup at the dentist went VERY well and I was primarily doing this brushing technique at the time.
