For the second time in 4 or 5 years I have been the victim of an awful hair cut. The same thing both times and it just happened to me on Saturday. While adding layers to my hair, something went wrong and too much hair was cut into the top/shortest layer creating an ugly step in my hair that can't be fixed properly without cutting it up to that length. I have spent 4 or 5 years growing out the last screw up and can't bear to cut my hair that short again. Any hairdressers out there? Why is this so difficult? Isn't layering a pretty basic technique? Any other hair horror stories? Misery loves company. Jeanne

My whole life is a hair horror story. I've always worn it long & stringy, thinking that long hair was always feminine and that there were no exceptions to that rule.

Well, I finally got tired of it. I always looked so frumpy. So I was doing MIS one day and I decided that I really liked the way Cathe's hair was cut in it, so I asked my sis-in-law (a hairstylist) to cut it that way. It looks awesome! I have thin red hair, and this cut really brings out the color and gives my hair some sort of shape. (I notice that people are a lot nicer to me since I got my hair cut... strange observation, but it's true.)

Hey Jeanne, what kind of hair do you have?? Is it naturally curly? If so, I found out about a GREAT website for curly hair, apropriately called "naturallycurly.com". You can click on the "salon" box along the top and it will give you salons near you that specialize in cutting curly hair. Now, if you have straight hair, then I have been of no use to you. Oh well. Judy

I was saw a magazine artcile or a tv show that dealt with how our hair has an impact on how people form initial impressions and develop ideas as to what kind of people we are. I recall a bit of what they had to say:

long blond: you are nice, friendly; people like you
short: people think you are competent, capable, they trust you
long brown curly: people think you aren't so nice

I have long (well, I was almost there, but not after Sat.) and I don't care what the stupid show said. I want long brown curly, so there! (Ok, trying to be funny, hope someone saw through the ironic humor.)

On the topic on thin, short, red hair, I like Miranda's new style on Sex in the City.

My hair is naturally straight, but I get spiral perms because I love curls and I don't like blow drying my hair. HOwever, I have a friend with natural curls and she will be happy to hear about this web site. Thanks. Jeanne

Been there! My whole life I had long hair and about 3 yrs ago I decided to get it cut short - I mean above the ears short - and the stylist did a horrible job on top of it. I was so traumatized. Nobody liked it. It's taken 3 years but I've let it all grow out, even the bangs and it's now to the middle of my back. Don't cut it short again, just get another stylist's opinion and see if they can blend the layers better. Or maybe just wear it up until it grows out a bit?

Traumatized is the correct word! Look! I have to talk about it at Cathe.com!

I got another perm to try and pump up the gap in the layers. Unfortunately--and I swear this is true--it didn't take too well right where I needed it too. I'm going back in a week to have that section redone. What a soap opera. I've told myself not to feel so dramatic, but I can't help it.

Thanks for the reinforcement to NOT cut it. It is tempting.

Yep, it'll be back and up a lot in the next week, and maybe for a while thereafter.

Judy,
I'll have to check out this website. I must be perceived as not very nice, because I have long, brown, curly hair...naturally curly! People hate it when I tell them that...they want to know where to get a perm just like mine.
I've decided not to get my hair cut ever again (at least until it goes gray). It's been over a year now with just a few nips at the ends and it's very long and healthy. It's easy to pull up or let down and I don't have to worry about fussy styling.
Hey, and one last good thing for curly hairs out there...it's back this year according to Vogue.

Hey, there's always HATS!!!

I do sympathize....I have always worn my naturally dark curly hair at least past my shoulders, sometimes longer....Well, I got it into my head that I wanted to go for something cute and short and took myself into a salon I'd never been in before and had it cut.

That was in August 2001 and trust me, I have not cut it since! It was AWFUL!!! They cut it way too short....even blow-dried straight, it was way too short!

It has been six months now and I'm finally NOW starting to be able to work with it again. Needless to say, I won't be going to that salon again....Actually, right now I'm gun-shy about most of them!!!

Jeanne, that is horrible. Once, many years ago I took my head with it's 24 inches of lovely thick hair to get a layered cut to tame it and the hair dresser used a razor and I ended up having to go to another haircutter to get it "fixed" which meant chin length hair! I actually took it pretty well but I've not had long hair since and it was really nice hair. Of course, in the intervening years I have gotten quite a lot of gray and at 39 no longer desire long hair but it was very traumatic at the time!

I always have mixed feelings about returning to a salon to make someone who screwed up my hair fix it but you do have the right. Tell them it is unacceptable and you want them to make good. OR go to one of the finer salons in your area and see if you can get it fixed. We have a few excellent ones in the Tucson area. Of course, they're very expensive but hair you want to present to the world is important!

Good luck. I hope you can get iat to a point of accetability in the time it takes to grow out a bad cut!

Half mockingly, half not,: Thank you all for your support during this trying time. I could go on whining about my current thoughts and feelings, but I will spare you as you've been so kind. Jeanne

These posts made me laugh! I have medium length blond curly hair and have had my share of bad cuts. I get so tired of the 'big hair" label that I get this stupid urge to cut it, and when I do it looks so queer and actually ends up looking bigger, like a big giant triangle head (and believe me, my head is big enough!) so I trimmed it once in the past year and am just gonna let it grow. Hey, look at dyan Cannon, she's up there in years and I love her hair!

Nope! I don't mind! If you know what it's like to have that kind of hair, you definitely need a line like that!;-)
