Odd Question-But-Braces for Adults

I had braces as a child and I was not told how long I should be wearing my retainer and my teeth have moved. My bottom teeth need to be straightened again and my top teeth have an overbite. I do not look horrible, but I have always felt like a should get them straightened again, and this time do it right. Braces cost so much and I am wondering if anyone knows what the average cost is, and what a typical payment plan would be?

Your best bet is to go and get an orthodontic consult. Most orthodontists will do this for free. Also, cost and payment have alot to do with your location. A second factor is how much movement your teeth need to do. Finally, cost will depend on if you go with "invisible" braces (ie. Invisalign) or traditional braces.

Unfortunately your teeth will continue to move as you get older. If you decide not to spend the money on ortho now, you could always just get a retainer to keep them from moving more in the future. A retainer is also a much cheaper option.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ivy,

I live in Canada and I wore braces in my 30's for almost 3.5 years. I didn't wear them as a child. My lower teeth in the front needed shifting the most. The cost for me was about $6000 but my husband's company covered half. And Wendy is right about teeth moving. I have a permanent retainer glued into the back of my lower teeth. It broke one new year's eve. My teeth moved instantly and dramatically. They moved so much that I had to have an ortho visit to repair the movement for the next 9 or 10 months! I am so happy I got braces. Cost it out. that will help you make the decision. It was well worth it for me. My husband would have preferred the money went into the kids' RESP's. ha ha.

I had braces in my 30s too, for the same problem... lower anterior crowding. I also have one of the permanent retainers cemented to the back of those front teeth (both upper and lower). I've had the retainers for 20 years now, and they've never broken or come loose. I've always been afraid of what would happen if they do. I highly recommend the permanent retainers though... my teeth haven't moved at all in 20 years.

And I agree... getting braces as an adult was one of the best decisions I ever made. I did it when I took my DS in for his... so we were patients together! My cost was about $2000, but that was 20 years ago. I am sure it's at least double that now.

Thanks everybody, I am going to check out the cost, I have always felt that your smile is important, it is the first thing everyone see's when they first meet you. I am going to try and do some convincing with my husband but I am going to go for it. Thanks guys.

I got braces in my mid 50's 10 yrs ago. I wore them for 3.5 yrs, cost about $5000 with insurance covering half. it was less expensive paying a lump sum rather than monthly payments.
the forces that cause your teeth to move don't quit being a factor. I have a lower retainer and a night guard that I wear every night and will expect to wear them forever. It was definitely worth it to me. I had traditional braces, invisalign was not an option then.
I agree with getting an ortho consult to see what's needed and the cost before deciding. many more options than when you were a kid.

The exact same thing happened to me. I had traditional braces in my teens and stopped wearing my retainer after a couple of years. Fast forward 30 years and my lower teeth were getting crooked again. I started wearing the Invisalign braces in January and my lower teeth are nearly straight already. I get a new set of liners every two weeks and check in with the doctor every 6-8 weeks to measure my progress. The cost was $2500 and I was told it would take aprox. a year but it may be less since the teeth are shifting pretty quickly. This time, I'll be sure to always wear my retainer to bed;)

Thank you so much for your reply, telling me what age you were in you got yours, truly makes me what want to get braces again.

2nd time around

I too wore braces in my teens and just turned 44. I've been debating for a few years since I now have an overbite about getting braces again. I'd prefer invisalign if that is an option, but will have to ask about a permanent retainer. I know one of my problems is I push on my teeth with my tongue in my sleep.

Maybe I'll call tomorrow for a consultation! Thanks.

I push my front teeth out with my tongue as well, and boy oh boy is my overbite back. As of right now I have two consultations scheduled, I don't exactly know what I will do as far as financing yet, but I figure baby steps, atleast find out what I would be getting myself into.

Most orthodontists will finance the treatment for you. I worked for an orthodontist for years. We set patients up on a payment plan interest free back then. I am not sure they do it interest free now though. Good luck!
