October brings Breast Cancer Awareness

Just a little reminder: Check with your doctor to see if it's time for your yearly mammogram.

I blew mine off because I figured being under 40 meant I could get away with it. Life handed me a little, well-deserved kick in the a$$ after that ignorant assumption, so now I'm much more vigilant.

Wishing you all clean and clear mammos. <3 :)

Mine is bright and early tomorrow morning at 7am. Good reminder, I have had quite a few friends diagnosed this past year.

My mother died of breast cancer. I've been flamed for talking about my fathers impending death so I hope by stating the above I don't get flamed yet again. She died in '92. I just had my mammo - clear - but I am always a bit nervous.

Our high school volleyball team has a "Volley for The Cure" game against another local high school. It is a great night. The girls from our school have light pink t-shirts and the other school is in fuscia. And just about every person (male and female) attending (sold out gym of 1500) is wearing pink. All proceeds go to Susan G Komen Foundation.

Glad you are healthy.

I just scheduled my first...I'm a little nervous about it...don't know why.

Our volleyball team is doing a similar thing. It's in cooperation with the Side Out Foundation - http://www.side-out.org/news-events/dig_pink/

Ahh - I didn't go last year due to football stuff. This must be the same thing. My friend had told me SGK but I think she misspoke.

Ours is 10-9

They say it's a blast of a time.

I just had a cervical biopsy to check for cervical cancer. Aparently I've had a HPV virus for the past 2 years which has increased my chances for cervical cancer. Not fun, . .think of it as a long painful pap smear. Now I just wait anxiously for the results. The girlie visits are never fun but oh so necessary so many people are surviving cancer because of early detection.

What a great reminder!

I just had my first mamo a couple of months ago, after I found a lump. The mamo was clear, but the doc did a biopsy b/c after looking at the lump on an ultrasound it looked suspicious. I just got my biopsy results yesterday and all is good. But, the whole time (waiting for the results) I was thinking this could be really bad. It sure does give you a whole new appreciation for life.

So please, just b/c you may eat well and exercise every day without any family history of breast cancer.....it CAN still happen to you!

Be vigilent and do self breast exams AND mamograms. My digital mamo was clear, but the lump was definitely palpable.

Angie, I'm so glad your biopsy was benign. I had a similar experience (only mine was a calcification on a digital mammogram), and you're right ~ the time between finding the spot or lump in question and getting the official diagnosis really turns you around. I'm grateful for what I learned in the process, but man it's overwhelming.

Though my diagnosis was benign, some argue it's a precursor, while others say it's not. I find that a bit frustrating, but I know medicine has its limits, and most docs are doing the best they can. At the moment, I'm on the 6 month mammogram schedule, which is pretty much all I can do. I've considered arguing for an MRI, but there are pitfalls with that as well.

Dorothy, I'm sorry to hear of your friends' diagnoses. I think I read recently that the breast cancer rate among women is now 1 in 8.

Baylian, I'm sorry about your mom. I'm glad to hear you're keeping up with your mammograms. The high school fundraiser is wonderful.

Gayle, it'll be fine. :) I think the mammograms are little less uncomfortable than they used to be. I've had 3 of them since *edited* February, and they aren't nearly as bad as the one I had 6 years ago. You should treat yourself afterwards, give yourself something to look forward to.

Janie, I send you ~ benign vibes ~. <3 Long, painful pap smear?! *faints*

Michele, glad to hear you're on top of things.

Tami, being poked, proded, and crushed naked isn't your idea of fun?! :p

For any sewers, knitters or crocheters, here's a BC related charity that is very grateful for anything you can send their way: http://www.headhuggers.org/

I agree they are not as bad as they used to be. Gayle the people who do them are kind gentle people, because, well, it is just an odd thing, but necessary.

Let us know how it goes. :) Sometimes you get a call-back because they didn't quite get the image they wanted, or they see something funky they'd like to double check (which often turns out to be nothing), so don't be scared if that happens. It's pretty common. As we get older, our breasts do weird things.

Your dog is so cute. I think I'll put my little guy in my avatar.
