Oatmeal in the Crockpot

Tried this. Overnight. It was nnaaaasty! I put extra water in there to make sure it didn't burn. Gooey "poi" like consistency (aka wallpaper paste) and still burned around the edges. I chugged it down anyway (I can eat anything as long as I put sugar free maple syrup on it). Did I do something wrong? Anybody done this?

Think I'll use my rice cooker to make a batch next time and keep it in the fridge for the week.

Hi Jen,

I've never tried this, however, Alton Brown made "Overnight Oatmeal" on his Oat Cuisine episode of Good Eats. Every other recipe that I've ever tried from his show has come out perfect. Here's the recipe from foodtv.com:

Overnight Oatmeal
Recipe courtesy Alton Brown

Difficulty: Easy
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 9 hours
Yield: 4 servings
User Rating: 4 Stars

1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup dried figs
4 cups water
1/2 cup half-and-half

In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours.

Stir and remove to serving bowls. This method works best if started before you go to bed. This way your oatmeal will be finished by morning.

Never did the oatmeal thing..but I LOVE the Crock pot, it's the best thing since sliced bread..especially when your busy, or sick, or just dont wanna mess with mess..you can make such delicious healthy meals in that thing, its a gift from heaven...haha

I understand that you need to use steel cut oats to make the oatmeal in the crockpot (It worked for me).

Please keep us posted.

I am unfamiliar with any recipe for crock pot oatmeal, but I make it regularly. I love the stuff! Fortunately for me my kids don't mind it...though it comes with a trade off. Oatmeal M-F and I will make them whatever they want Saturday, and I try to treat them to cinnamon rolls once in a while too.

I much prefer steel cut oats to Quaker rolled. They are just a bit crunchier and have more protien. I will put them in a pan with cinnamon and raisins (6 cups water, 1 1/2 cup oats) and whatever else we want in there. Between the cinnamon and raisins that sweetens it quite a bit, but I will add a touch of brown sugar for the kids.

Regardless, once the oats have sat overnight in water all I do is heat it up in the morning. Otherwise it just needs to simmer for about a half hour to be finished.

I have to say that I have tried to cook things overnight in a crock pot, or bread machine set for early morning bread, and the smell is so distracting. I will keep waking up to see what is burning, or just an awareness of it....makes me crazy all night}(

Yippee for oatmeal!

Like Lorraine said, if you use steel cut oats, it works better. I make a many-grain cereal that I use just about every whole grain you can think of in it, and with steel cut oats (aka "Irish Oats ") and it comes out great and just right by am

Okay...I will get the Irish oats when my regular stuff runs out in a few weeks....do you have to adjust the water amount or just use the regular amount they (must) list on the back of the can?
THANKS
Jen

I was going to make this oatmeal recipe in my crockpot until I read Dani's post. I didnt think about it, however, the "overnight craziness" factor would have gotten to me too. I never thought about it until I read Dani's post. Laying in bed, smelling it, and thinking about it cooking away, perhaps burning, would have kept me awake all night long.

I think I will stick to making this recipe on top of the stove. Thanks for posting the recipe Gayle. I bought the cranberries, figs, and half & half this weekend. I already had the oatmeal. I am still going to make it, just not in the crockpot!

I will let you know how it turns out. I appreciate the recipe very much, it sounds wonderful.

Love,

Madonna

the whole night I made the wallpaper paste I mentioned in the first post...I was on and off awake all nite (our bedroom is on the same floor as the kitchen), it is true! I will probably still try it again with the Irish oats though, I would think you could get used to it after a while.
