Oatmeal -- Help!

I WANT to like oatmeal. But I don't. I am determined to give it another try. I made it this morning and couldn't even finish it. Yuck! So tell me, everyone -- how do YOU make your oatmeal taste good? Thanks.

Lisa.

Do you like the taste of vanilla soy milk? If so, do this: cook the oatmeal on the range with vanilla soy milk. Add about a teaspoon of cinnamon and a tablespoon or so of raisins.

Enjoy!

Hi Lisa! I practically consume oatmeal everyday but the only 2 ways I make it is by just adding blueberries w/Splenda or dicing up a peeled cored apple w/cinnamon. But if you really don't like it don't eat it! LOL Kathy:D

I add about a TBS. of peanut butter or brown sugar. It is great with maple syrup too! YIKES!

I eat the Nutrition for Women oatmeal that Quaker makes. It is yummy. They have vanilla cinnamon flavor and brown sugar. YUM! :9

I have to force myself to eat it too. I can like eat it for 2 days and then I can't gut another bowl. So, I just make oatmeal cookies. LOL!:+ I'm more of a cream of wheat person.

I love McCann's scottish oats. They're coarser than flaked oatmeal, and take a while to cook (I make triple batches, and put the extra in single serving, microwavable bowls, then reheat in the microwave after chopping it up a bit and adding some soy milk).

I sprinkle mine with about 1 Tbsp. of freshly ground flax seed, drizzle on some REAL maple syrup and pour on some vanilla soy milk. YUM! I'm getting hungry already!

A little brown sugar or maple syrup goes a long way. Usually I had some flax meal, & I always have fresh fruit on it.

I like how oatmeal tastes when cooked in milk or soy, but hate the clean up.

Oh I feel so sad for you:-( I love oatmeal! I make it a ton of different ways, most of which have been mentioned here. You can add honey or maple syrup on top, but I do find adding a little brown sugar during cooking makes it much better, and then maybe some on top with a little milk. I also like butter while cooking. I will usually add some sort of dried fruit during cooking as well, like raisins (iron to boot!)or dried cherries. Cinnamon and nutmeg are nice with it.

Katherine also mentioned McCanns Irish Oatmeal. Yummy! If you have not tried this, I would. My only suggestion is to go to a health food store and get basic generic steel cut oats. MUCH cheaper and it is the same thing.....oh, and I'm Irish, but I will not pay that much for a fancy tin. I get it through Mountain Peoples Warehouse for 9 bucks for a 25 pound bag. McCanns is more like 7-8 bucks for a small (though cute) tin. You might see if you have access to some sort of thing like that. I do love the crunchiness of the steel cut oats. Not so slimy, and if you are not an oatmeal lover this may be a better way to go. I also read somewhere that because the germ is intact you get waaaaay more protein. Correct me if I'm wrong Katherine:D

Sorry, I spelled your name wrong Kathryn! By the way, I love your reheatable bowls idea. I may have to try that one!

I put about 1/4 -1/2 C. straight out of the box (uncooked) over soy yogurt with some diced dried fruit or whatever fresh fruit is lying around. If you mix it up and let it sit a couple of minutes, the yogurt softens the oatmeal. Thought I'd hate it till I ate it. (I don't liked cooked oatmeal either!)

Hi Lisa,
Oatmeal isn't on my list of 'must have's' either. But I cheat and put pure maple syrup from Vermont in it along with flax oil. The oil gives it a buttery flavor. The flax makes me feel I'm doing something really good for me and helps me tolerate the oatmeal. LOL Sometimes I add fresh fruit, splenda and or a little cinnamon. (I also use a small bowl.;-) )

I mash a ripe banana in my bowl and mix the cooked oatmeal with it and add ground flax seed and 1% milk or vanilla soy milk. Sometimes I boil the water with dried cranberries in it. Very tasty!

Lisa, I am SO glad you asked about this! I hate oatmeal, but I feel like I should eat it as often as possible because of my high cholesterol. The one suggestion here that seems tolerable to me is the one submitted by Gretzky. Thank you SO much. That sounds like it would be good. I will definitely try it!

Thanks again,
Teresa
