nutrition for early morning workouts

Cathe and other hardcore exercisers:

I'd really like to start working out more in the mornings - I can do this with workouts of moderate intensity without eating anything first (don't know if this is a good idea) but I think with videos like MIC and Interval Max, I probably wouldn't do as well without some calories in my stomach. What do you recommend I consume pre-workout (I hate exercising with food in my stomach) and how soon after I consume it can I work out comfortably?

Hi,
I did see a study published in a magazine (I think it was Fitness??) that said exercisers were able to perform better if they had eaten 100 calories 20 minutes to one half hour prior to exercise. Some suggestions in the magazine were part of a sandwich, cube of cheese and small piece of fruit, small amount of yogurt on 1/2 english muffin. Personally, I find that I do the best with either eating nothing and having water handy OR eating a few apple slices or 2 bites of a protein bar and waiting 10 minutes or so. Usually I eat nothing, but I always have water. My experience is that I often get nauseated if I'm working *really* hard and have any food in my stomach.
I really love working out in the mornings. Good luck!

During the work week, I work out from around 4:45 a.m. to around 6:00 a.m. and I do it on an empty stomach. I have no trouble doing high intensity workouts this way. I actually think I'd feel sick if I ate anything (plus I'd have to get up around 4 a.m. to eat, and that is just too early for me).

However, on weekends, if I can't workout as soon as I get up, I do eat breakfast (cereal and skim milk or fruit and yogurt with granola) and then I wait a good hour or so befoe I work out.

Three days a week I'm up at 4:30 and start working out by 5. It's rare I eat anything prior, no matter what the workout is for the day. If I do eat something, it is a very small bowl of cereal. I am OK eating that even before cardio. Today though, I did BodyMax~ and after the power circuits I had to consume something, so I had a half of a protein shake ~ then continued with the weight portion of the workout.

Hi,

I always workout in the morning, usually on an empty stomach, and feel fine. Occasionally, I wake up feeling very hungry, and on those days, I'll have a banana. Quick, healthy, and just enough to put in my stomach without feeling full.

Hello,

I used to workout on an empty stomach, but now i usually have a teaspoon of natural peanut butter or a few sliced almonds. Since I started eating before my workouts(20 mins. before) I feel stronger and have more stamina.

Ditto for me exactly!
