New 'Yaz' b.c. - anyone?

Hello. I am not on 'the pill,' nor have I ever been. And I'll tell you why - vanity or no - I'm terrified of the weight gain.

Here's the thing, however, I suffer from near-debilitating PMS - cramps, ravenous appetite, bloating, irritability, mood swings, acne, etc.

I hear that 'Yaz' combats all of these things. But does it bring the possibility of weight gain with it?

Any advice?

Thanks. :)

I could be wrong on this, but my gyno told me that birth control (pills, shots, etc) itself will NOT make you gain weight. I was terrified of this when I first tried the shot because I had a friend in college that said it made her gain 15lbs.

My gyno told me that birth control doesn't make you gain weight, rather, it may cause your hormones to become unbalanced leading to an increased appetite. She said that if I was aware of this going into it (and planned accordingly for those "cravings"), that I shouldn't notice any weight gain from the meds themselves.

She was right, at least in my case!

I know this doesn't really answer your question about Yaz specifically, I just wanted to offer my 2 cents on the weight gain issue. Again, just going off of what my doctor told me! }(

Yaz is a lower dose bc pill. It is also supposed to help with PMDD. I have never gained weight on any bc pills I have been on. I agree with the PP who said that it's not the pill that causes weight gain, but giving in to the cravings the hormones might cause (although I never noticed anything different). I was on Yaz for two months but it didn't work for me...the dose was too low and I had breakthrough bleeding.

That said, I have heard wonderful things about Yaz. Just make sure to use a barrier method until you know for sure that it's working properly.

I was on birth control for a couple of years. I got off last Christmas for about a month and I looked really good during that time...my stomach was the flattest it has ever been (no love handles!!!) I gained the extra pounds back and thought that maybe it was because I got back on birth control. I stopped taking the pill again, but nothing happened.

Thinking back, that whole month I ate really, really well. I didn't even exercise that much (what with the holidays and all), and yet I still lost the extra pounds.

Anyway, I would definitely speak with someone about taking birth control if you have terrible periods. Mine have been really bad since I got off and I really miss the regularity that comes with the pill. Don't worry about the weight gain. Just keep doing what you're doing.

I went to my doctor with the exact same complaint. I was given a prescription for Nuvaring and iut has turned my life around. The dose of hormones it delivers remains constant the whole month long so you just don't have to deal with the emotional fallout of the highs and lows of female sex hormones. Not only that but there is no weight gain at all, my skin has cleared up and I almost never get spots anymore, I look so much better and am on a more even emotional keel. My doc prescribes me 4 Nuvarings for three months because I use it continuously to combat horrendous PMDD. It is easy to insert, I never feel it, nor does my husband, I don't have to worry about forgetting pills, which I used to do, and if you are sick, you won't throw up your medication, no risks. It's the perfect method of birth control and perfect remedy for PMDD, for me. I really recommend it 100%. It comes with little stickers which you put on your calendar to remind you of which day you need to remove and replace the ring. Easy as pie!!!

And remember: NO WEIGHT GAIN!!!! No bloating. No feeling like you could take a chainsaw to the next person who asks you for something!

Go ask your doctor about it.

I took BC pills for several years with no weight gain. After the birth of my third child (3 years ago) I had my tubes tied. I think I'm now suffering from PMDD. I don't know for sure because I haven't been to the doctor yet but I am making an appointment soon because I have all the symptoms. I was going to ask about Yaz since I had heard that it's a treatment for PMDD. It don't like the fact that I had my tubes tied so I wouldn't have to take the pill but now it looks like I may have to take it anyway. It's worth it though if it helps.
