New workout routine - Getting good results all around

I used to be an after-work exerciser, because I just didn't think I could get up in the morning before work and get the kind of workout in that I wanted.

Well, I've been so busy at work, and the drive home is so long, that it started to become a real inconvenience to try to exercise after work. My husband was having to do everything - dinner, dishes, etc. - so that I could get my workout in. Even still, we weren't sitting down to dinner until after 7:00 every night - some night even later. What's even worse was that many nights I just didn't feel up to exercising (too tired or too hungry, or I had a headache, etc.).

So, about two weeks ago, I started getting up earlier and exercising 30-40 minutes before work. I do abs 2-3 times a week after work, and I do legs once a week. I've temporarily stopped lifting weights until I get things under control with my aerobics, legs, and abs...then I'll work the upper body workouts in a couple of nights a week, as well.

At any rate, I've been seeing great results in just these past couple of weeks. I've noticed it in my legs and abs...and I'm pretty sure it's from all the aerobics I'm doing (every morning). My water intake has increased dramatically, and I'm not really craving soda or other unhealthy beverages. I'm sleeping better...my energy levels are up...I've felt healthier (I had been having spells of queasiness and lightheadedness -- not sure from what -- but for the past two weeks I haven't had any problems, even though I was having them almost daily before).

I guess the moral of the story is that if you aren't seeing the results you want, change some things around in your routine. I'm enjoying this new workout schedule and the results it's giving me.

Good for you! We have to do what works for us and a lot of times that requires some tweaking. So glad your new routine is working out for you. Keep it up!

Good for you! I switched to mornings 2 years ago (this was a difficult change for me) and I love it! Now the only time I workout at night is if I have an early meeting or when I'm on business travel.

Way to go! It is always hard to get back in the swing, and especially at a new and challenging hour. I know you are happy you have started back exercising! It is one of the few things we can do for ourselves to ensure we will live longer and happier lives. Congratulations on your 2 week marker! You are can now reap the benefits now that your are over that initial excercise hump! You know the one where you are tired and sore until your body adjusts to all the extra load! Keep up the good work for yourself! You will never regret getting up, even if it is near impossible to pull yourself out of those nice warm covers!

Good for you, Catwoman! I love hearing how you are doing and making progress. Even though I am a SAHM, I feel like I could do better if I got my workouts going first thing and out of the way because I always end up busy with something else and then tired out later.

Catwoman - that's awesome. I'm trying to come back and having a heck of a time doing it. Maybe I'll give your morning routine a go of it. Your sucess is inspirational !

I found myself in the exact same situation (except after working out, I had to make dinner and clean up afterwards. I have a capable husband and an 18 year old daughter but that's another post!)

AnyWHO, I resumed my early AM workouts and we're all much happier.

I'm happy that your early AM workouts have been beneficial for you in terms of diet, energy and overall well-being. While it is tough changing our circadian rhythm it can be done through consistency. I've heard that if you do something for 28 days it becomes "habit". And this is definitely a habit I want!

I'm totally committed to making AM workouts my lifestyle again. They were for many, many, many years but then I bought 400TC sheets and liked staying in bed late! Now I just climb between those sheets a little earlier so I get the best of "both worlds".

Good luck with your workouts!

~ Kim

P.S. If I were you I wouldn't let my husband get out of the preparing dinner and/or cleaning up afterwards 100%! He sounds like a great guy. You're very fortunate!

Hey Catwoman, I've been thinking about doing the same thing but since I have to start work at 8 am it's a little tough. I was thinking of just doing my cardio sessions (running and such) in the morning and getting that out of the way and getting the rest in after work. I don't know if that will work but I am glad you found something that is great for you!!!:)

Hi Catwomen, I just wanted to say your story sounds exactly like mine. I started AM workouts six weeks ago. I noticed a difference in my definition after two weeks and now I find that I don't enjoy my day if I miss my AM workout unless it is a planned day off. Another benefit is that I eat better all day knowing that I don't want to "waste" my workout on empty calories. Way to go and keep it up! Vicky
