new to step

hello i am new to step and i was wondering if there are any videos that are recommended for the beginner?

Thanks:)

I'm a beginner, too. I had the best luck with Kathy Smith and Gin Miller's Step Reebok. They both include very basic choreography that allows you to repeat the steps until your body learns the moves. After you get that down (several weeks, at least), you can do anything, although probably not the first, or the second, or sometimes even the third or fourth time you attempt them, if you're like me. I've finally worked my way up to Cathe now (Step Heat and Step Jam seem the simplest choreography-wise), but I have to admit to the minutes at a time that I stand simply staring at the screen on some of her other videos. But eventually I'll come across a part I can follow, and it seems like the next time I try it, I'll work harder on the parts I missed and get a few more of them each time. Right now, the only thing I'm still having a lot of trouble with is crossing over the step.

Good luck! It's worth the trouble. Stepping is really a LOT of fun!

Thank you very much for the info. I have absolutely no coordination, it is quite frightening actually but I am going to give it a try. Oh by the way which step do you use at home? I was at big 5 recently and they had the two different sizes, the one that you see at the clubs and I guess the shorter one that looks like it is about two to three feet in length.

Which do you prefer?

Thanks,
Tracee:)

I STRONGLY suggest buying the full, club length step. I bought a shorter one because it was cheaper and it is currently being used as a stepping stool in our garage. It is just so much more fun (and intense) to do a routine on a full sized step. With that said, if you are really worried about choreography, you might want to start with the Wedding video or Mega Step Blast. I don't have either of those, but those two are usually suggested for new-comers. I have two left feet. I dove in with CTX. They are shorter, so easier to learn, but a lot of the moves are from Cathe's earlier videos. In the earlier workouts, she gives more of a breakdown of the moves; )over face-in overs, ricochets, etc.) I also think that the suggestion posted of Step Jam and Step Heat was a good one. Step Heat is great, and a bit shorter than most of Cathe's other step routines. Step Jam is one of my favorites. It is one of her longest, but the time flies and you will just rock out to the music! Hope this helps. And welcome to the wonderful world of Cathe!

I agree with Jillybean and want to encourage you to get the full length step. As you progress, you'll want to participate in all the neat over-the-board-lengthwise moves that are such fun, you can really fly with those.

Also, I used Step Heat as my introduction to Cathe stepping. It is extremely straightforward. If you want non-Cathe, then Charlene Prickett worked for me, though she is less interesting in the long run. Still, to get you started, she's a pretty good bet.

I got the wedding tape for the step portion, and I have done it 2x now and feel like I'm catching on pretty well. I was really surprised at how much easier it was on just my 2nd try.. Probably gonna do it again tonight.

I have Step Heat on the way, so I can't say how it compares to wedding tape, but if I can do it, you can!! I'm klutzy and very uncoordinated. Uncoordinated is probably more me!

I think it really fun too, time goes quick and I'm really anxious for the Step Heat..At the time I wasn't so I told the girl not to rush sending and now I can't wait! I am kind of surprised how fun it really is.

I would get the full size step too, I got one (Cathe's All Step came with it), and I really like the step. The All-STep is way too tough for me now.

I get a very good workout with the wedding tape, I can't get thru it all without stopping/marching. I'm actually kinda surprised at it's intensity. I am hoping to keep working on it and build endurance, and move on to her tougher tapes. At least get to where I can do the moves in the tapes that have tougher step moves, such as Cardio & Weights.

Good luck!! Kathy

Ditto on the full-size step. I tried using a smaller one, but it just doesn't work as well. And the full-size step doubles as a weight bench--very handy for some of Cathe's strength-training tapes.

I also agree about the full size step. That way you get the full stepping experience as it was meant to be done.

Robin;)

Thanks everyone for the great advice, good news I have a friend that manages a health club and he is going to look into getting me a step for either free or at a substantial discount!

Thanks again for your advice!

Hi! That is so cool! What a nice friend--I hope that works out for you. I also wanted to mention that turnstep.com has diagrams and moving cartoon feet that show you many of the moves that you during a step workout. I think this could be very helpful. I agree with all the posts above as to which videos to start with. In addition, if you are new to fitness in general, and not just new to step, then I would recommend starting with the Kathy Smith and Gin Miller type workouts. If not, do remember to modify the Cathe stuff. Just because the choreography is a bit more basic, these Cathe tapes are still quite intense for someone new to working out. You WILL grow into them, though, and have a great time!
