NEW RUNNERS JANUARY 2010!!!

So glad to have found this thread where we can motivate and inspire each other!

My goal this year is to run at least 10 5k's. It's a little tough to train in freezing temps (I'm in northern IL) but luckily the cold-snap has been replaced with "balmy" temps in the mid-30's. ;) Got in a quick run this morning before Mother Nature changed her mind.

On another note, I have a friend who has a CRAZY mission of running/riding 50 miles in 50 states in 5 months....uhhh...that's 2,500 miles! However, it's for a great cause and I'm so very proud of her. You can read about it at http://www.runrideinspire.com

Run happy!

Jane - Sorry the weather wasn't cooperative! At least you got your run in!

Alisha - I'm a fair weather runner as you all know, but I'm learning to go ahead and get out there in the cold! The right gear and I'd be out there in the rain, too! If I liked cheese, the quiche would sound good! My DH picked up some Starbucks ice cream at the grocery store yesterday! Yummy! We shared just a bit last night after dinner!

Also, I just baked some chocolate chip cookies!

Girls - It just seems like the only time I'm happy and not worrying is when I'm working out now.

On the bright side, with DH in classes now, he has more opportunity to network with people who are in his line of work. Who knows, maybe he'll get something that way!

Got in my STS Back & Biceps today, but not my run. DH and I will be going on a run tomorrow morning, so that will be good!

Welome to our little runners group Angie! Great goal for this year! I'll be cheering you on! I'm hoping to be able to run my first 5K this year! We'll just have to see!

Your friend has a very ambitious goal! I hope she's successful!

Hi Everyone!

We are having a dreary Sunday. I didn't feel like doing anything but then decided to go outside and do the following workout.

3 Rounds
1 minute work/50 seconds rest

Slam Ball
Swings
KB Sumo DLHP
Jump Rope
Walking Lunges
Jump Squats
At the end of the workout I set the timer for 3 minutes and ran the driveway up and back as many times as I could.

Alisha
~ I'd much rather do my workouts outside as well. I'm just a baby when it comes to cold weather. When you are used it working out in the 90's it hard when it's in the 30's and 40's. I'd much rather workout in the heat.

Tricia ~ CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!! :):):) I hope you saved some for me. :p

I agree with you Tricia, working out makes me feel so good. It's been the only thing that has gotten me through the last couple of years with my dad.

Angie ~ Welcome to our group! What a great goal for this year. I started running in late 2007 in hopes of doing a 10K in 2008. I ended up doing about 18 races in 2009 ~ a bunch of 5Ks, a 8K, 10K and a 15K. Last year I did 19 races. 17 were 5Ks and I did one each of a 8K and a 10K.

I originally from Illinois. I was born in Evanston and raised in Wilmette and Skokie.

Waving to Lisa and Cindi! Hope everyone has a great day!

Its grey, overcast, and drizzly

I started CTX. I did All Step and then the shoulders/ab work. Its new to me. I liked it. The choreo wasn't too hard and I think I could have done it on a set of risers. I always try a dvd without risers the first time to prevent injury.

Today is a higher calorie, clean eats day. I had my eggs and a little bit of salsa/refried beans for breakfast. I took my vitamins, with my endochrin disorder thingy its a bit of a handful, I always feel so accomplished after:p.
I followed it up with a single GF Quinoa cookie (only 7 g. of sugars.) I'm having a serving of the pistachios for snack and a chicken salad for lunch.

Tricia- Cookies, did you say cookie? You don't have to put cheese in quiche, most people do, but its just a savory custard. Mine is crustless and low carb. Lots of vegetables like shredded broccoli slaw, mushrooms and sugar snap peas. I use buttermilk for the tangy flavor.

lioness- Yeah, I do better when its warmer than 30 degrees. Right now its not too cold, peaking at bout 50 degrees. We expect it to get sunny this week and then more rain after that.

Angie- Welcome! Your goals look great. Your friend sounds like she might be crazy. :p

<Waves Hi to everybody else>

Hi Jane & Alisha!

Yes, there are plenty of cookies left to go around! Please, come take some before I make myself sick! Bleh! Amazing how after eating clean for so long that just a few cookies can make me feel so bad!

Alisha - I did the kickbox workout from CTX last week for the first time and it didn't seem to have the oomph that KPC and Kick Max have for some reason. I thought I was working it pretty hard. I didn't do the weight work though because of STS, just the cardio portion. It's probably more effective with both.

Thats good to know about quiche! I've been wanting to make one for my DH, but I just couldn't see it if I couldn't have any! ;)

Well, I have broken my streak of working out every day! :( I took off Friday due to my DH's news about his unemployment interview, then, I also didn't do anything today. That was more because we watched Religulous last night and we had to keep pausing for me to make my commentary! We finished watching it around 12:30 a.m.!!! I hadn't realized I was making quite that much commentary!:eek:

It was certainly an interesting documentary though.

Back on it tomorrow! I guess if I can make it through the rest of January without taking a break, I will be happy! I can't complain about only 2 days off in a month now! I get a rest week at the end of February! I hope it's starting to warm up a bit by then - who am I kidding . . .

Hi everyone! Lots of posts since last Friday so I'll do my best to catch up with everyone. :)

Tricia - I'm so sorry to hear about your husband's situation. That stinks. The classes sound like a really good thing for him. I like my job and would be heartbroken if I were let go, but I know my DH would have an even harder time if he lost his. So much of who he is is defined by his work. I think a lot of men are that way. All this talk of cookies makes me want some! I like them best warm and fresh out of the oven though. You are doing a great job with your workouts. I think 2 rest days in a month is impressive!

Alisha - I don't make quiche but I make eggs for my husband a lot as he eats low carb. I just start with some veggies and seasonings, saute them, scramble in the eggs and sprinkle in cheese at the end. Yesterday I made him Greek-style eggs. Spinach sauteed with garlic, tomatoes, onion. Then added the eggs and some feta cheese. Sometimes I'll do Italian eggs or Mexican eggs, etc. depending on what I have around.

Jane - We've had some rainy days here. The snow has washed away but I think it is going to get cold again now. Are your parents up here (Illinois)?

Hi Angie. Welcome to the group! I'm in the western suburbs of Chicago. Where are you?

And hello to anyone lurking out there. :)

Friday was a rest day for me - I think I said I was going to run but it didn't work out. Saturday I did about 7.5 miles and yesterday another 8. Saturday's workout was 3 30' progression runs with 5' walk breaks but I had to cut the last one short about 15 minutes because I ran out of time. Yesterday was 15' slow, then 5x300m hills, then 15' slow again and then the hills again then I was supposed to do just another 15' slow but did 30 instead to make up for Saturday.

I'm doing some weights today.

Hi Cindi- Greek style sounds tasty.

Hi Tricia, Jane, and Angie.

I have CTX on deck again, I was going to try the KB workout. I will have a serving of yoga for lunch and a serving of Ms. Cathe for dinner.

Eats this morning were ok. Mom roasted a great big piece of pork overnight on low and I had a piece of that, a small little piece of yam, and 1/4 of a banana. I aim for between 30-60 grams of carbs most days, less than that didn't produce the results I was looking for, in other words I put on  I followed up my AM vitamins with one GF chocolate chip cookie. I don't think I liked them enough to buy them again but now that I have them, they must be eaten (one at a time, must be reasonable) because GF food is way to expensive to throw out on my budget. Its a low calorie day so I am watching myself.

Hi ladies,
I didn't get to workout over the weekend. I hope to swing the kettlebell this evening. I'm feeling rather stressed so may not make it around as much. Hope to get back on track by the end of the week.

Alisha ~ Hope you are enjoy CTX. Explain what that is for me. It sounds muscle confusion related.

Cindi ~ It sounds like you are getting some really quality runs in. Go go go!

Tricia ~ I'm glad your husband is doing and enjoying the classes. Box up some chocolate chip cookies (althought the dough is really my weakness) and send it my way!

Jane ~ As always your workouts sound great. I hope you are feeling a little perkier now. The rain here isn't really helping my outlook on life either.

Hi NAWIF!

Lisa

Hi Everyone!

I'm not working out this week as I'm at my parent's house so I just go there after work.

Cindi ~ My parents are down here in Georgia. I have a sister that lives in Wilmette and a bunch of cousins that live in the Northern 'burbs but my parents and 2 other sisters live down here as well.

Tricia ~ I LOVE chocolate chip cookies although I tend to eat the dough more than the cookies sometimes.

Don't feel bad about missing a couple of workout days. If I knew a year ago that I would be taking 5 days off (of working out) every 3rd week, I'd have a freak out but sometimes you have no choice. I'm surviving. I just try to push it hard on the days that I can workout.

Lisa ~ Yes I'm feeling better today. The sun is shining and the temps are in the upper 60's!!

Hi Alisha and Angie!

Evening girls!

DH is doing better. Classes are in full swing and he added a couple of Calculus classes! He's a glutton for punishment! I have eaten way too many of those cookies! That's okay though, I won't bake again for quite a while!

Cindi - Your training program sounds like it's going great! You are really working it!

Alisha - I hate when I'm expecting good results from a great week and it doesn't happen! Hang tough! It'll happen!

Lisa - I hope things level off for you soon and you can get to feeling better! I work out more when I'm stressed. It takes my mind off of the things that are bothering me.

Jane - Oh! 60s? We hit the mid-50s today, but it was pouring and windy as all get out! It was terrible! Oh, well. Tomorrow it's sunny, but back in the 30s. Sigh, 53 more days to Spring! Then it'll take another 2 months to warm up a bit!

Tonight I did STS Disc 16 round 2! I'm loving' me some Meso 2! Saw my asthma doc for a follow up today and, for the first time ever, I gave in and let them give me the H1N1 flu shot. I don't think I've ever had a flu shot of any kind, but figured since I got sick in November, it might be a good idea. Now, my arm is sore even though I worked out!

I'm watching Return to Me while I check things out on the computer tonight! I love that movie!

Later!

Hi ladies! Thank you for the nice words about my running. I tell you some days I don't feel that great about it - the runs are hard!

Last night I did a FIRM workout - Total Body Time Crunch.

Alisha - good work on the eating. I want to know what CTX is too.

Lisa - Rain here this weekend was not uplifting for us either. Now we have snow and cold. BRRR.

Jane - Enjoy that time with your family.

Hi ladies,
I did do Providence last night. This afternoon I had to go pick up a dog after work so I won't get home until late. After bathing "Mr. Stinky" I hope to do an Ellen Barrett workout before I go to bed.

I've had a lot of travelling to do lately (including long weekends the last two weekends in a row) and hope that a weekend at home will help a lot. I also had someone get offended with me at school and instead of addressing it politely with me he blew up on me during and in front of a class and then went home and called the president of the board of trustees, who called the president of the college and all the way down. Hopefully the issue has been addressed and dealt with at this point but didn't help my stress level any. The final little stress is that hopefully I'll only have this dog for a week or two but if he heartworm tests positive I'll have him for a couple months and have to shell out a lot of money for treatment. Cross your fingers for me :) And did I mention I hate, hate, hate the cold and really wish I could get out for a run?

Sorry to dump ladies but I kind of had to get that out there. I feel kind of obnoxious complaining about little things like that when there are a lot of people who have it a whole lot worse than I do. So big hugs to Jane, Alisha and Tricia who are dealing with real problems. And hugs to Cindi for all the great runs! Thanks for letting me vent.

Lisa

Don't sweat it Lisa!

We ALL have to vent now and then, I did! It doesn't matter how "big" or "small" the issue is, the fact is that it's big enough for you that it's causing you stress, which is not good! The therapeutics of getting it out there is what matters! Get it off your chest and let it fly! :) Feels a whole lot better to talk about it than to stew over it alone!

It's just so rude and wrong to bring things up like that in front of a lot of people instead of taking it to an office or private area. I'm so sorry you had to suffer through that! I've had bosses that do that! It's not fun and certainly unprofessional! Like you said, I hope the whole thing is resolved and you can put it behind you and move forward!

I hope the dog you have will be okay! Heartworm is terrible to have to deal with. A friend of mine's chocolate lab caught it from a neighbor's dog. They didn't take care of him and he ended up dying from it. My friend took hers to the vet and, luckily, she survived!

I know what you mean about the cold! We've been pretty mild so far this week, which I have enjoyed tremendously! :D Friday, though, is supposed to get back down in the 20s. Brrrr! Oh, well. I'll make myself get out and run this weekend! I didn't do it last weekend.

Take care and good luck with everything! I'll be sending happy, positive energy your way and to your current "tenant!" :)

Oh Lisa, complain anytime! It is so cold here - I'm pretty ticked off by it. And that student acted like a 3 yr old. I hope all the people involved see that. I think there are men out there who think yelling and posturing is the answer to everything. I hope he doesn't make the classroom environment hard for you. (HUGS!)

And poor stinky - I hope he's ok. We had a cat a few years ago that died after we spent 6K on treatments. It was really awful - both losing the cat and spending the money.

Run was great tonight. Zumba was really fun - although I don't think it was really a Zumba class. We did a lot of types of dances.

Hi Everyone!

I'm just checking in even though I'm not working out this week. I miss it but being at my parent's house is very tiring so even if I could workout I don't know if I could.

Lisa ~ Vent away!! How horrible to have someone blow up at you in the middle of class. My boss is like that all the time. He reminds me of a three year old when he does that. Hope you dog will be okay. I will try to blow some of the warm weather your way. There was a little frost on my car this morning but it will be in the mid 60's today.

Cindi ~ Glad you had a good run yesterday! Run for me and Lisa!!

Waves hello to Tricia and Alisha!!!

Good morning ladies,
Thanks for all the kind words. I feel a lot better about things this morning - I just needed to get things out there and let them go. I did Ellen Barrett's Yogini last night after bathing 'Maui' (aka Mr. Stinky) and I did Push-Pull this morning.

Thanks so much for the support everyone. It was actually a student and it was pretty amazing. I've never seen anything like it. I think the administration was pretty unhappy with his behavior too but it was still really stressful. I did, in the end, get the opportunity to tell him that I needed him to address things with me in an appropriate manner and he apologized but the damage is done already in terms of everyone up the chain of command from me. Oh well. I have to believe that they see the truth of the situation and if they don't I can't change that.

Tricia ~ Maui's heartworm test was negative - yippee! I've treated several dogs in the past and your right, its serious and its no fun to treat. Maui has a potential adopter and a rescue group lined up so that should go well. He was scheduled for euthanization and had been pulled off of the adoption floor when the shelter director called me. He is really the sweetest thing though and was a total gentleman last night. Hopefully he'll have somewhere to go this weekend.

Jane ~ I'll be looking for that warm weather!! I think it is supposed to warm up a little bit tomorrow and then get nasty again for Friday and Saturday. I'm tentatively planning a 4-dog run (probably walk realistically though) for tomorrow afternoon. Wish us luck.

Cindi ~ Oh that's so hard with the kitty. I think cats are just so much more difficult to provide vet care for and they are so much more stressed out by it than dogs are. I had to deal with kidney failure in a young cat and it was really hard and expensive and then to lose them in the end anyway is so hard - ((HUGS)). I find I don't mind spending the money so much when the critter survives, when they don't its really frustrating on top of everything else.

Did you see the article on barefoot running in the most recent Runner's World? I didn't find it really informative but it was interesting - they had an advocate and someone who was an orthopedist (I think) debating it.

Thanks again ladies,
Lisa

So weird, I meant to post last night

But I got lazy instead. Anyway, I did CTX Step & Intervals last night. I wimped out and skipped the push ups.

In the morning an extraordinary thing happened, when I walked out the front door to go to work, a great big owl flew right over my left shoulder, I could have touched him if I had reached out. I think that he is the one hunting and leaving us mice on the front porch. The cat isn't doing it, when she does it she makes a big deal about it and wants to be told "Good kitty!" There was a huge flock of turkeys was in our yard. So good omens.

Yesterday turned out to be sort of a cheat day that was unplanned. The morning was fine but then I got to see an old friend for lunch. We met over at Fresh Choice. I did ok with the salad, had some garbanzos, gf pea soup, and sesame seeds. I had a baked potato and some gf pudding with non-dairy whipped topping, probably 1/4 cup each. It turned out to be a great idea on my part to go, I wasn't planning on it, but afterwards she took me over to a tech company that is hiring and we filled out job applications on the spot  And I have a friend who works there and I was referred  So, thinking abundantly! Lets kick the abundance rock together!

Lisa- CTX is short for Cross Train Express. Its like 4-DS (4 day Split) but with 6 days instead of 4. I got it to alternate with 4-DS once a month. Sorry for the tmi but its for ttotm when I don't go out and run, my uterus just can't take it. There is cardio and strength training. You may have seen "leaner legs" on a rotation and this is where you find that workout.

More personals

Jane- Enjoy your week off.

Tricia- I'm glad that your DH is doing better, having nothing to do is the worst for guys. I like Return to Me too.

Cindi- My eating is mostly ok. I just feel the least strong when I first wake up in the morning. I remember when I was kid thats when I would sneak into the kitchen and just devour the ice cream even though I knew I would get in trouble. Just the whole gallon:eek:. Yeah, I'm guessing I might have a sugar problem. lol.:p I have heard a lot about the barefoot running thing from Steve Runner over at the Pheddippidations podcast.

Lisa- I'm so sorry that awfulness at work went down, I hope it goes your way. Ugh. I'm kind of over the cold too now lol, its only been here for two months :p

I hope stinky is ok.

Plans for today/tomorrow: I expect to do CTX KB this afternoon and then tomorrow is Power CKT.
