New Runners Check-in for September 28, 2009

Hey guys, I seem to have embarrassed everyone! I did warn you in the recruitment ad, did I not? :p

Tricia, so nice to hear from you! Are we your babies, or are you referring to your dogs? :p Your trip sounds like so much exhausting fun! Can you post your pics on your Cathespace page? I'm not on Facebook because of the huge privacy issues there. But you didn't get drunk once? Really? Well, except for that  I totally want to take that vacation!

Hey Janis, think about it this way: barges stay afloat rather well. They may not be graceful, but they get the job done and get where they need to go! By the way, how about the "snatch clean and jerk"? Doesn't that sound like a past relationship we've all had? Gotta tell you, I've tried Teresa Tapp and hurt myself badly. The woman expects you to do very odd things with your body, stating that it's more "natural". I ordered her program, then cancelled immediately and they had to send me a cheque rather than just refund my credit card. Took months. I didn't do her abdominal workout, though, even though I still have it. Her other stuff freaked me out too much to try it.

Cindi, I think I will also be investing in some Chi Running bookage.

Lisa, you don't need to follow an STS rotation: you can just use it as a ton of workouts to use however you like. I am going to be using it as my traditional strength training workout that I do once a week (I do kettlebells for the other two weekly strength workouts), but doing a full body workout by doing half of each workout for a particular workout. Okay, that didn't make sense. Here's what a workout would look like:
  • 1/2 STS Disk 1
  • 1/2 STS Disk 2
  • 1/2 STS Disk 3
  • Ab Circuits

Tana, very funny post!

Cindi, is the Two Gomers thing a music podcast? If so, what genre of music do they specialize in?

Jane, I hope you enjoyed your rest day more than I enjoyed mine.

Sydney, are you redoing your fit test today? If so, I wish you commitment, conviction and strength - luck ain't necessary.

Jenn, I am so close to considering that Nike sensor thingy, but I think I might be getting that Garmin Forerunner 305 in my stocking, so I'm holding off for now.

Okay, Alisha, what the heck is "spoon bread'?

So I'm going back to work today. I may try a light KB workout tonight, but at the very least I'll be walking to and from work. With any luck, my boss won't kill me for abandoning her for two days.

Good Morning Everyone!

Morningstar ~ I'm so glad you are feeling better and heading back to work. Don't push the workout if you don't feel up to it.

Lisa ~ I have STS and am I not following the rotation. I just do them as single weight workouts. Did you decide to get the AOS Clinic DVD?

Tricia ~ Your trip sounded like lots of fun. I'd love to ride in a hot air balloon.

Tana ~ How do you legs feel today after GS Legs? That is one hard leg workout!

Janis ~ Hope your feeling ok today after your spinning workout yesterday.

This is my workout for today. I do Crossfit type workouts 2 or 3 days a week in my backyard. I can't wait to get out and do this one. The air feels so nice after the heat and humidity of the long summer.

50 Box Jumps
50 Jumping Pull ups
50 Kettlebell Swings
Walking Lunges (50 each leg)
50 Weighted Sit ups
50 Push Press double arms or 25/25
50 Squats
50 Slam Ball
50 Burpees or Squat Thrusts
150 Jump Rope

I also wanted to mention World Run Day which is November 8.

Basically it's a day that you run for charity. You pick the distance, the place and the time and you run for someone. Last year my sister and I ran a 5K.
For the past 10 years, World Run Day is a running event held annually in November to celebrate running and charitable giving. It is recognized as both the International Day of Running and the International Day of Charity.

Here is the link for more information: www.runday.com.

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Hi Morningstar!

Sorry to hear you've been under the weather! Yes, I was referring to my dogs and cat, but I did miss you guys, too! Can't have all of you feeling left out! ;) You were misbehaving badly while I was away! Good for you! Keeps everyone on their toes!

I will get my in-house Tech Support to help me get the pics over. Right now they're just on our main computer and still need to be put in the shared folder for access.

Got one short run in while away, but won't work out tonight because I have no groceries and have to go shopping after work today!

Have a good day!

HI ladies!

Ran 3 miles yesterday trying to put my Chi running techniques into practice. There's a lot to think about but I did ok. Definitely need more practice. It was cool outside and I thought my asthma would be ok (I have exercise-induced) asthma but after I finished my workout, I was wheezing and coughing for a good hour or more. Should have taken the medicine - but I will next time. After my run I did Lower Body Extreme (the new Chalean workout) and really liked it.

Lisa - HALT - that's a good trick! I'll remember that. What a nice surprise from your boyfriend. I've been married so long (21 years) there aren't many surprises left to spring on me!

Morningstar - I hope you are feeling better. Two Gomers don't play music, they just talk. For my long runs, I prefer (talking) podcasts over music.

Janis - Barge or no barge, I bet you are getting a good workout. I wish I could swim for exercise but I don't know how. I think my local Y or Park District might have classes for grownups who can't swim. Maybe someday.

Tricia - your trip sounds wonderful!

Tana - hi!

Jane - Thanks for the reminder about world run day. It's a neat idea.

Enjoy your day everyone!

Tricia – I am so happy you and your husband had a great time in Wine Country! I loved reading about all the places you visited. I should have asked you about your itinerary and where you were staying; I might have been able to save you some time criss-crossing the hill or given you alternate routes (next time :)) I am surprised you stayed in Santa Rosa! Vinter’s Inn is lovely! John Ash’s restaurant is fantastic too.

I am glad you liked La Luna. You only had two chocolates at Woodhouse! What restraint! Really, I mean that!

Hey, that’s great the wine servers were generous, I wonder if it was because it’s crush time. Or, they too, don’t want people to get too sloshed.

I agree with Morningstar, please post a few here for those of us who have rejected Facebook! :)

Morningstar – Once you are at work, remember you can leave again! Seeing as how you may have picked up this virus from THE co-worker, giving you an extra sick day is the least they can do.

My neighbor, up the road, was borderline evangelical about Teresa Tapp, especially the abdominal/pelvic exercises. Out of curiosity I looked around online. I still don’t know much, but it most definitely was not for me. (Maybe it was the eyebrows.) Wow – amazing business practices. Pretty low brow. {ha!}

By the way, how about the "snatch clean and jerk"? Doesn't that sound like a past relationship we've all had? {laughing} Yeah, say good riddance, get a dose of penicillin and change the locks!

I am going to have to steal this: “I wish you commitment, conviction and strength - luck ain't necessary.”

My new motto: "I’m a happy barge if not a swift barge."

Lisa – hey, sorry about the STS hard sell! We’re all such enablers! I was just thinking since you like PUB, you would like STS, especially since it is fresh and current.

I, too, like the HALT acronym. Thanks for sharing it. I even used it last night. I can relate to adding C for cold. So maybe LATCH would work (am I latching on to food?)

Jane – I am going to enter World Running day on my calendar. Thanks. It sounds like World Wide Press Play Day. My ankle is less cranky, but my mood is crankier! So, tell me, how do you count 150 jump ropes? Are you counting skips, or are you counting time? Do you actually use a rope or do you mimic the movement ala Jillian Michaels?

Cindi – I encourage you to learn to swim even for basic survival skills. It can even be fun!
I have been married a long while too, we’ll be celebrating 23 years soon!!

Tana- I know what you mean about Facebook being a time sucker. I am not on Facebook, but it just seems like the entire internet sucks me in and consumes all of my time! I am looking forward to your intro post. How fun that you re-connected with Sydney here!

Sydney – How did the re-test go???

Hi Jenn! Hi Alisha!

As for me, I was going to swim today, but I did so much driving yesterday, I just can’t drive up to the health club today. So – I am going to let Morningstar kick my butt again, (also known as floor work) and then do some household/garden chores.

Have a beautiful day ladies!
:D

Janis ~ I count the actual jumps using a real jump rope. I have a weighted one. Sometimes I will do jump rope for time. I usually set my gymboss for that. I made up one workout where I alternated 2 minutes of jump rope with kettlebell work. Fun!!

Hi everyone...
I am wayy to sad to post much today.

Just wanted to say Hi Tana!!!
I will always remember you :) Our little one are virtual twins!!

Well...haven't retested as of yet. but was put on notice today that if I fail again I could be forced to retire. I am soo sad because fitness is my thing. I have always been up front with anything fitness. but not it comes down to doing 38 situps within 2 minutes.
Today was the worst day I've had since my last miscarriage and I can't seem to stop crying.
And believe me.... a 40 year old post partum crying Soldier is NOT very pretty.

Anyway...I did get in 5 miles today. Today was a tempo run and I felt better afterwards.
If you all are praying ladies... pray for me.. (not really for the fitness part--I'll get by) but because I've finally lost faith with my superiors and really with the Army...

Hi Cindi! I'll have to check out Chi Running! Good for you on your 3 miles today! I had to do a major grocery run as we cleaned out the fridge before we went on vacation! Back to it tomorrow though! Of course, it's supposed to rain, so it might be a circuit workout!

Janis - I didn't know there were shortcuts! It looked like there was only one way across either north or south! We still got in more than we thought we would even with the criss-crossing! We already received our first shipment today from Chateau Montelena! They have a warehouse in Albany, NY which made it get here in one day! Wish RI would change their law so we could order online! Meant to tell you that we were looking forward to actually watching them crush, but our timing apparently was off and noone was doing it while we were at any of the wineries until, finally! We went to V. Sattui and they actually had the machine running. It was a little anti-climatic. Wasn't expecting foot-crushing, but thought there would be more to it!

Jane - I keep wanting to get back into rope jumping too! Unfortunately, I have my hands in so much, I don't seem to ever get one in!

Hello Sydney! - Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I can't even begin to imagine how hard that must have been! Hang in there! My prayers are with you! As to the Army, my DH was in the USMC for 10 years and did a short stint in the Army as a reservist in Intel. He finally gave it all up and is out for good. We can understand your loss of faith. It just seems to get worse instead of better. No wonder no one wants to do more than 2 years or so in the service anymore!

Hello to Morningstar (Hope you're feeling better!), Jenn and Alisha!

Jenn - How was your trip to Eureka? I saw the signs to Eureka while we were in CA and thought about you! How did the stick horses come out?

Hey ladies!

There's nothing wrong with the STS hardsell. It sounds like a great program but it's just not going to happen for me right now.

Today was a light day for me - I just did a short run with CC V1. Tomorrow I'll do yoga and kettlebells.

Morningstar ~ how did you do today? I hope you made it through the day okay.

Sydney ~ sending long distance good vibes. That's a frustrating and stressful situation to be in!

Jane ~ I'm going to pay bills tomorrow so I'll make a decision about the clinic dvd after that. I hope I can do it! Thanks for the info on World Running day. I'll have to put it on my calendar.

Hi to Tricia, Jane, Cindi, Tana, Jenn and Alisha!

Hey Tricia, Welecome back!! Your trip sounds like a lot of fun especially if you are a wine taster. :D

I think you are think of Alisha with the trip to Eureka. I have just been here in NY watching the leaves change color.

Sydney (((HUGS))), I will keep you in my prayer, I hope you can find faith. My BIL is a retired Air National Guard, he was forced to retire also due to medical issues (pancreatis). I'm sorry you have to go through this I hope everything works out for the best.

Hi all,

Today was a rest day and Open House. My darling is in accelrated math. She is doing 6th and 7th grade work. Her teacher is nice and we got to see the curriculm for the school year.

Hey guys, I just have a moment: I was actually able to run today, and did CardioCoach 5 (did challenge 1 twice and skipped challenge 3). It was awesome!

Sydney, if you are forced to retire over sit ups 6 months after giving birth, you would have one helluva lawsuit against the Army, for a few reasons. Could you take a bit of a leave of absence instead?

Sorry Jenn! Gone only a week and I forgot who has been doing what!

My bad! Do they still use that one?

Well, I'm sure the leaves are beautiful in NY!

Hey Tricia, Welecome back!! Your trip sounds like a lot of fun especially if you are a wine taster. :D

I think you are think of Alisha with the trip to Eureka. I have just been here in NY watching the leaves change color.

Jane - I'm copying that workout. Thanks for sharinng the details of what you are doing! I'm going to try it this weekend.

Sydney - I'm so sorry. :( Praying for you. I'm sure it is so very dissappointing to lose faith in something you are so commited too.

I'm hoping to run 6 miles today - just not sure if it's going to be inside or out. It's pretty windy and clouding up fast here in Chicago.

Have a great weekend everyone - I'm not usually online on the weekends, but I'll be back on Monday. :)

Good morning ladies,
I woke up with a migraine and went back to bed so I'm off to a slow start today. Thanks to the wonder of Excedrin I'm up and moving slowly now though. I'm still going to try to do my yoga this morning and then KB this afternoon if I feel up to it but I'm not going to push it. I'm working on a little bit of a head cold too.

Morningstar~ YAY! Glad you are feeling better and were able to get a run in today.

Jane~ that workout sounds great! I'll have to copy it and try it. Sounds like fun and would make a great travel workout since it wouldn't require weights.

Waving hi to everyone else!
Lisa

This was thursday.

This was written two days ago, I just got home.

Tana- 5 is a fun age, I remember when my neice was five, she was so much fun at that age. The idea of cake detox has legs, well ok its actually has a cake thermometer but I digress.

MStar- I hope you feel better real soon. I hope you don’t have what I had. Have you seen a dr yet? Any news? I do tend to strike the ball/toe of the heel (except when I land following Cathe’s instructions) when doing step.

Jenn- how is it going? Thanks for the encouragement regards my meal plan.

Skyy: I’m sorry about the test, but you just had a baby and it may be a while before you are really back in form (even with Cathe being your guide.)

Cindi- how are you? Btw Alisha is Rapid breath (don’t know if that helps) Vibram soles on doggie boots? I didn’t know dogs needed shoes. 8 min sprints? Yikes you’re a cheetah. I hate blisters.

Janis- I made a lemon cake last night (gf) what flavor did you make? My avatar is lame and broke. The glitter covered horse is still naked.

Tricia- I hope you are having a good time. Welcome home (in an all the way over there sort of way.) That sounds like an awesome vacation.

Lisa- I hope to get the pyramids (as soon as funds allow) I have them tivo-ed and really like them. I love horticulture, I took a 3 mile hike with a botanist once upon a time and it was really interesting. I tend to eat when bored more often than I should. Lame but true.

Jane- How are you?

I am sitting next to a stinky dog. His name is Sheldon. His owner will be home tonight. I would give him a bath but its awfully cold for that.

Just FYI regards Morningstar, around here we have shortened it to MStar out of laziness (mine) or creativity (someone else’s).

Snatch Tests: “Just a little pinch” truly evil.

So much for best laid plans. So, the crepes will be tomorrow. I had some almonds for breakfast, a smidge of cake/cream (left over from last night), some cashews. For lunch, I made a mushroom and watercress crust-less quiche. It was very popular. I only had a small piece. I have made dinner, but the guest has yet to arrive so I’m in a holding pattern, which is ok, since I’m not really hungry anyway.

The menu: green beans, meatloaf, home made cole slaw with pineapple, and home made coconut cream pie. Don’t worry, this will be a single bite taste test, the pie is really intended for the guest, my Aunt Peggy requested it and when you are on chemo if something appeals to you, don’t fight it, just eat it, after all, next week she will not want to eat coconut at all. It’s a weird thing that happens on chemo, they are like a 2 year old with short lived culinary desires that burn hot and fizzle.

Tomorrow we drive home. I’m looking forward to going home. I’ve been sleeping on an air mattress for a week and I would like a real mattress. Also, as much as I love my Aunt Peggy, its not easy to stay with someone who is much neater/tidier than you are, I really try to be respectful, but its not easy to remember. This is such a small town that people say the darndest stuff, for example “it’s really far to down town.” It’s a 5 minute drive. I’m used to living rural. At home it takes an hour to drive downtown. Its 15 miles to a restaurant.

Friday

So, I'm home now. I was able to eat most of last week. I haven't had bad pain in over a week now. I am able to sleep normally now. I have my short term plan to get super smart, skilled, and build a new portfolio so that I can be effective and network myself into a paying job. I have a new rotation, eating plan, and even a relaxation plan so I'm on target. I did go for a two mile hike yesterday. It was great except I forgot my hat and am sunburned. It was cool out and there are 30 foot high redwood trees. I did not even realize I was burned until later. I slept with aloe on my face.

I may have missed somebody, so, in advance, Hi! How is it going?

Sydney- I’m so sorry the test did not go well. Hugs and lots of prayers!

Tricia- I just drove through wine country on my way home yesterday and saw a small herd of elk. It was me (not Jenn) who went to Eureka/has stick horse issues. I have settled on a Sea Biscuit themed pony. I’m going to use glitter (24 pack from Martha Stewart) and pastel colored acrylic paints.

The hot air balloon ride sounds like a ton of fun
Thanks for the long post about your vacation, its like we got to go along in spirit.

Tana- The computer/internet is a super time waster. I try to keep it to a dull roar but I’m not always successful.

MStar- The two gomers is a Podcast about two guys running first a half marathon and then a full marathon (we are in season two as we speak.) Gomer 2 has shingles and is recovering from them. I follow them on Twitter. Does this make me a running geek? One of them is a bassoonist which just cracks me up because of the (fake) sponsors that advertise the bassoon as “the gift for the person that has everything.”

Spoon bread is like a corn meal soufflé. It involves fresh cornmeal and, beaten to stiff peaks, egg whites. I make mine from scratch. (That’s scratch not snatch.) It is often eaten with a little bit of honey and butter.

Jane- good morning, how are you doing? Oooh world run day is Nov. 8, I will be out there! I love making up my own workouts using the jump rope as the intensity interval.

Janis- I’m glad your ankle is feeling a bit better, mine is too.

Jenn- I sure wish I had that talent for math that your daughter has, that’s just super awesome.

Cindi- How do you cope with the wind on a 6 mile run? Do you wear a scarf?

Lisa- I am so sorry you have a migraine. I hope you feel better soon.
