New Kettlebell workouts!

Has anyone tried either Santa Monica or Anthony & Beth's new one? I too am looking for a new kb workout, and am really torn between the two. I think I've figured out a way to make ropes work in my house, but the ones from AOS are really expensive. I looked everywhere, but can't find any other place to get them. If anyone has tried either workout, I'd love to hear your opinion.

Janet

Both of these are on preorder now to be released this fall.

Hi Lisa,

You know, the Extreme Cardio one isn't too crazy . . . if you use your pause button! :p

Not to enable you further or anything (;)), but I also just did this one for the first time a couple of days ago, and I think you might really like it:

http://www.ontheedgefitness.com/videos.html

The pacing of it is much closer to The KB Way, and Lauren's personality is really great. It might be a nice fill-in for you until Vol. 2 of The KB Way comes out in November. :)

I LOVE Laurens kettlebell workout! Shes really nice too. I got her dvd and it was pausing and jumping a tiny bit here and there so she sent me a new one. the second one is doing the same thing though??? I don't want to bother her again so I'll deal with it I guess... I haven't heard anyone else complain about that though so maybe I'm just lucky. :( It really didnt hurt the workout too much. the first dvd they all happened in the breaks so I'll keep using that one. Its still worth it cause I love that workout.

Oh, Jess, that is such a bummer about the replacement DVD skipping, too! I haven't had any problems with mine; do you think that it might be your DVD player? Hmm . . .

I think that I'll pre-order The KB Way Vol. 2, but might also wait on AOS Santa Monica since it's so darn expensive . . . and I have no idea what I would do about those ropes!

Tneah, Beth is the woman that instructs along with Anthony in The KB Way (a remake of AOS Providence). She's a soap opera star or actress of some sort who love kettlebells!

Janet, like Tneah said, the two new ones won't be out until later this fall. The Extreme Cardio one that Tneah mentioned is also my favorite! It really kicks your behind . . . in a good way!:p

Ah, Wendy, I wish you would have interrupted! :D I like your idea of doing 4DS and then CTX for awhile. I didn't like the blisters I was getting without gloves either!

Oh Leanne, all of this talk and now I'm wanting to change my CTX plan back to the bells!LOL I still have that dvd of 3 short bell work outs I got a few weeks ago that I haven't tried!

I need to breathe deeply and focus. I need to keep telling myself "I WILL do CTX. I WILL do CTX."

"The bells aren't going anywhere. Do CTX for just THREE weeks and then you can do the bells."

LOL

Oh, Wendy, that is so funny! Just think -- the three weeks WILL go by really quickly!! They will! :)

Well I don't think so since NONE of my other workout DVDs do that. They all play smoothly till I pull hers out. I've also tried cleaning the dvd and my dvd player. sigh! I really don't get it cause no one else is complaining of it though. I keep thinking to try it out in the living room dvd player or my computer but haven't got to it yet. It wouldn't matter anyway cause I only workout in my room with that dvd player.. :(

Aw, darn! That's awful! She's so sweet, though, that you could maybe email her again and offer to send this new one back if she can replace it again. Bummer!:(

I know that some people don't use gloves with their KB workouts, but I was getting callouses when I didn't use them. I've experimented with a few kinds (including Cathe's new cardio gloves), but have found that a pair of weightlifting gloves with very light padding seems to work best for me. It lets me still feel the handle well, without getting in the way of my grip! :)

Leanne (or anyone else), would you recommend the new Cathe fitness gloves for KBs? I'm forming those wonderful callouses not only from KBs but also from lifting and would love to get one glove to solve both probs. Any recommendations?

Hey Lisa,

I got a pair of the "cardio gloves" (the ones without padding) on the RT, and I thought they would be perfect with my KB's, but, when I tried them the other day, I was actually getting blisters for the first time.

I dug out the old weight-lifting gloves that I'd been using (I had literally tossed them in the trash), and they do work better. These are the ones I've been using, and they seem to work well:

Of course, they were my old lifting gloves, and the padding on them is really squished.

I just bought my DH a pair of Harbinger gloves from Sports Chalet to use with KB's, and they seem to be working well for him. I think that the trick is to get something with really light padding.

Hope this helps!:)

Leanne (and other kettlebellers):

Can I ask you: which kettlebell DVD did you start with? Which do you think teaches form the best for someone who has never tried this kind of training before? Did you learn with an instructional type DVD, or did you just leap in with Anthony or Lauren's training DVDs for example?

I think I'll leave Mr. Sand Dune for after I have some experience! I find it hard to watch the guy, he seems knee deep in the stuff!

Thanks for your help, and by the way, love the 2 photos of you with the shorter hair and the red t-shirt. You look fabulous!

Clare

Hi Clare,

I was wondering if you'd be starting up with the kettlebells now that fall semester has started! ;)

I'd definitely suggest starting with a DVD that has a tutorial option so you can learn proper format. I started with The KB Way to Your Perfect Body (which has a nice tutorial and which is also a slower-paced workout), and I'd definitely recommend it! It's a re-make of Anthony's (from Art of Strength) Providence video, with a woman who helps lead the exercises. Here's a link to it:

http://www.beacon-fitness.com/Home.html

The other one that I recently purchased that would be good for beginners is this one:

http://www.ontheedgefitness.com/videos.html

Lauren goes over proper form in her tutorial section, and her teaching style is nicely low-key.

Those two are definitely easier than Mr. Sand Dunes or Anthony's AOS Newport; Anthony and Mr. Sand are more challenging, but are also a lot of fun! Hopefully others will chime in with other tutorial-type DVD's that they recommend.

Anthony's AOS website also has some great videos on it:

Oh, and thanks for the nice compliment, but do you mean the person with the short hair in the red tank top? If so, that's Kara/Squirrelly, and she does look gorgeous and fantastic!:)

Thanks Leanne for the advice, you are a sweetie. And yes, you are right, I did say I'd get into this in the Fall! Well remembered!!!! I hope the kettlebells at target are OK in terms of quality. I certainly have a Target near me, don't fancy ordering online and paying vast s/h costs. Shall I aim for 15 pounder to start do you think? I know we had this conversation months back. Sorry to drag you back to it. But you are my go-to person for info on kettlebells.

Thanks for all your help. Love your photo with Amy Bento too! Amy and Coach Sean....girl, you meet the greatest people! I'm glad for you you had the chance to workout with him, a great experience. Wish I lived in SD..... No-one comes to Michigan!!!! Maybe Mr. Weber can come take a look at our dunes?!?!?!

Hi Clare,

I'm glad that you're going to try them out! :) Has your fall semester started yet?

Yes, the kettlebells at Target at the Go Fit ones, and they are really nice in terms of quality! When you pick one up, just be sure to check the handle to make sure that it's nice and smooth. As you can see from the above thread, some folks don't wear gloves, but I always do since I don't want to get too many callouses.

I started with a 15# one, but then quickly realized that I needed a 20# one, too, for moves like swings. You'll find that a heavier bell is actually better for certain moves, esp. ones that you power through with your legs. So perhaps start with a 15# and then see how it feels. You could even check out some moves on Anthony's website before you go to Target, and then try to practice some of them in Target with a 15# and with a 20# to see which one feels better. (When I did this, I just checked to make sure that no one was around! ;))

Right now, performbetter.com is also having a good sale with cheap shipping on kettlebells. (I'm thinking of ordering a few more sizes!)

I'm always happy to help! :) I'm certainly no expert on kettlebells, but I'm glad to pass on what I've learned the last few months. I remember, too, that last year, when I first started lifting with Cathe, you very patiently answered a bunch of questions for me! I really appreciated it so much!

Let me know if you have any more questions! I'm subscribed to this thread, but you can also PM or email me. :) Yes, it was so great this year meeting Amy, Cathe, and now Coach Sean! I'm dizzy with it!;) Now I bet you could certainly talk Mr. Sand Dude into a trip out to Michigan . . . .

Leanne, I ordered these and I just used them when doing the kbells. OMG, so much better for my hands now and they didn't get in the way either. Thanks for the info!

I'm also about ready to order that Keith Weber dvd....DH is really getting into these Kbells so I think I'll get it for him and I can use it too ! Ya, that's a sneaky way for me to get a new workout! :D

Hey Lisa!! I'm so glad to hear that you liked those gloves! I always worry about making recommendations in case something doesn't work out. I think that you and DH will both really, really like Mr. Sand Dudes, though! That workout is intense, but you can definitely modify it and hit the pause button between each round if you need longer breaks. Keep me posted on how you like it! :)

Hi Leanne!

I pre-ordered The Kettlebell Way II. :D

I didn't get Anthony's because of the ropes. If I had a place where I could use the ropes I would get it. I'd love to take a class with him!

Hey Michele!!

I did the same as you -- ordered The KB Way Vol. II, but held off on Anthony's b/c of the ropes. (Too many fitness toys, too little time! ;)) I know -- it would be so great to take a class with Anthony!! BTW, my new elliptical should be here next week -- and I'm soooo excited! I'll finally be able to try out my new CC workouts, and hope to join all you gals for CCPP next month! :D
