Hi,
I'm new here, use to work out with Cathe years ago. I haven't worked out in about 4 years and want to loose about 20#s. If you read my profile you will learn I'm recovering from a bad horseback riding accident. I want a DVD that I can use with free weights. I don't have bar bells and will need buy a more complete set of free weights. I would like something that I could grow into as a get stronger since I'm really just a beginner. What would you recommend? I'm a swimmer and so my main cardio workout will be that. But I need a few other things that will give me the other aspects I need to a good workout. Like,
fter I buy a weight workout I will want to get something that have a core body, or ball workout too and a stretching dvd. It looks like you now have all of those. Boy have you been busy Cathe making new workouts. Glad to see you've even got a few for beginners and law impact ones for us older folks. I'm 55 but hope to stay young for years by staying active.

If you are just starting with weights, I would go with some full body work outs like Muscle Endurance and Muscle Max. Remember to start with weight that you are comfortable with. You can grow into both of these. Have fun!!!

Any of Cathe's weight workouts that use barbells can be subbed with dumbells. However Pyramid Upper Body uses just dumbells, the Pyramid Lower Body uses both or primarly a barbell, and there's also some floor work and a good ab routine.

I would consider SuperSets/Push Pull. Those are both full body work outs, but done as is they're not quite as advanced as some of Cathe's other stuff. I used those after I had been on a weight lifting hiatus for some time. They were tough at first, but I built up to them.

Once you grow into them, there are some superb premixes on that DVD, too.

Just my $.02. Good luck!

Thanks,
I went out and bought myself a small set of dumbbells that only have a 2-3-5- weights. I have Cathe's "Slow and Heavy" series on Video and did the biceps triceps workout today. It was pretty good however in few of the sets I needed a tiny bit heavier one so I also bought an 8 #er today. I know that's not much weight but I'm excited and hopeful. Boy does the slowness of it make it harder.
I was wondering does she used the barbells just to add more weight or does the barbells have a different angle or something to the weight training, being farther out to the side. I just wondered if there was any science to it or what. Thanks.

Lora.

As I just wrote to another newbie, I can't say enough about the Gym Style weights workouts (Legs; Back/Shoulders/Biceps; Chest/Triceps). I'm not a fan of full-body workouts and often tell people how I regret "wasting" 6 months doing full-body circuit workouts that got me nowhere (though maybe they were good for building a foundation I still wish I hadn't blown 6 months when I could have been doing real weight training).

Also, there's been a lot of talk here about Platemates which, as I understand it, are these great little heavy-duty weighted magnets you can add to your dumbbells when you're ready to move on to a heavier weight but the next higher weight is too heavy. Since I learned about these I WISH I hadn't bought those shiny chrome Rebok dumbbells with the hard plastic discs on the ends... I can't use Platemates with those and they roll all over the place. Learn from my mistakes. Don't waste (too much) time with circuit/total body workouts and buy dumbbells that will stay put when you set them down and on which you can use Platemates. I don't own Platemates but my next fitness investment will be a full set of metal hexagon (they stay put) dumbbells and Platemates. Live and learn, I guess.

Good luck, whatever you do :)
