Hi i am new to cathe's videos, I have been doing the firm for five years now and love the weight training aspects of it, a friend of mine suggested cathe's videos to me since I am tired of doing the firm and want something new. My body shape is naturally very slim with no shape, so I want workouts that will bulk up muscles(esepcially the lower body) more than to just lean and tone so i can add some shape to my frame, does anyone have any suggestions on which cathe videos to get to bulk up the lower body? P.S. I do consider myself an advance exerciser if that helps :) Also I was thinking of getting gutts and butss, is that a good one for bulking up?

Hi,

The Gym Style series are designed to be a muscle/strength building workout, and you might need to take a look at your diet if you are trying to add muscle (maybe you will need more calories and protein). These are great videos, all weights, no cardio, I don't think you will be disappointed. There are 3 DVDs in this series.

I believe other weight lifting focused videos are Slow and Heavy, and Pyramids (I don't have these). I just ordered Supersets and Push Pull, but these do not seem to be "hard core" lifting.

If you are naturally thin and doing a lot of cardio and not eating enough calories, it will be hard to "bulk up". It's hard in general for most women to really bulk up.

Good luck whatever you decide!

I have B&G but haven't used it yet. From what I hear though, you may find what you're looking for in this particular DVD. Everyone says it's tough.

I just started trying to build muscle and added Slow and Heavy, The Pyramids, and Gym Styles to my collection. If you use weights heavy enough to challenge yourself, these DVDs might work well for you.

Visit the Rotations Forum and see what others are doing. That may give you some ideas.

Muscle Endurance, Muscle Max, Power Hour, Pyramids & Slow & Heavy are my favorites. I've really gained muscle using these dvd's. There are other factors involved with muscle growth. You will actually be tearing down muscle while you workout, and you will grow them afterwards with proper nutrition and sleep (especially protein powders).

I hate to say this, but if you have an ectomorphic frame (small and not really that muscular) you are going to have a very hard time bulking up. Mesomorphics build muscle very easily (I'm more mesomorphic in my lower body), but even then, bulk doesn't come easily.

Genetics play the biggest part in making bulky muscle. Basically, women just don't have the testosterone needed to build big muscles. In fact, lifting heavy actually has the opposite effect on women than it does on men: heavy lifting makes the muscle tighten and compress on a woman. Sure, you get a little muscle building, simply because the muscle is working, but what you see most is the definition of the muscle developing.

Those women you see bulked up for fitness competitions lift weights full time, for hours a day, have a natural propensity to build muscle, and heavily supplement. And even then, when they're not training for competition, they lose some of that bulk, because it's just not healthy to supplement that heavily and work out that stringently for long periods of time.

Lift weights, but don't do it with the goal of bulking up, because it could discourage you if/when it doesn't happen. I mean, I've been lifting weights for years and just can NOT get my arms "big", and it seems like I have to lift and lift and lift to see and feel results. The heavier I lift, the tighter and smaller (but sexier) my arms get, but it takes FOREVER to get them there. Lower body for me, on the other hand, is very easy to build muscle, but even then, it doesn't bulk out. It, again, gets tighter, but very nicely defined. It just doesn't take as long as my upper body does to get results. In fact, I see them in one leg workout.

That's interesting, CatLover. As a former bodybuilder, I lifted heavy and gained tons of muscle (i.e., got "bigger") everywhere... I guess each person is different. I did take alot of supplements, but only spent 2 hours a day in the gym. Right now, I like not being "huge" but am working on building muscle while losing fat.
