Need Oatmeal Recipe

I'm hoping someone can help me. I would LOVE to love or even like oatmeal. I've read on here so many good ideas for mixins but can anyone tell me the way to initially prepare it on the stove? (How long to boil, simmer, when to add the oats, etc?) Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm a big fan of the steel cut oats. I like Mann's Irish oats in the gold and white box. They can be a bit hard to find. Quaker also makes goos steel cuts in a purple cannister. Both a bit pricey, Quaker's are about $5 and Mann's about $7 but there's something like 16 servings per container. I normally make 4 servings at time because I make it for everyone on the weekends. Boil 4 cups of water and add 1 cup of oats once it boils. Stir til it comes back to a boil, then turn down the hear to a low boil for about a half hr or so, depending on how thick you like your oatmeal. Stir every couple of mins so it doesn't stick to the pan. Also use a bigger pan than you think you need, when it first starts to boils its gets real foamy and if/when it boils over its a pain to clean off the stove top. I like mine served w buttermilk and honey. Sounds a bit weird, but tasty. Hubby and son like brown sugar and cinnamon stirred in. Also good are raisins or small diced apples and cinnamon. Mann's also makes a quick cooking steel cuts that you can find on the stove or in the microwave. A bit gluey in the microwave, but passable for a weekday morning. The quick cooks are pretty good on the stove and take like 5 mins. I would just recommend staying away from instant oatmeal. Steel cuts are the best in my opinion, followed by quick cook steel cuts, old fashioned oats, then instant. Just follow the directions on the box/cannister for whatever brand. Should turn out fine. The more you stir the gummier they get, so just stir enough to keep from sticking. Use the stove instead of the nuker if possible. The longer you cook, the thicker they get. Will also get thicker as they cool. Hope this helps!!

No pot for me.

I use regular old oats, the kind in the round carton that you get in the cereal aisle. NOT the instant, (or 1 minute), but the other kind--Quaker calls it "old-fashioned", however I buy generic. Anyway, these are rolled oats.

1/2 cup oats in a bowl with 1 cup water. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. Wait a few minutes, then mix in your goodies. (sugar, etc.)

Done. Eat!

dont force yourself to eat things you dont like to eat breakfast does not have to be a heavy hot cereal it can be something light like rye bread toast:)

If you like your Oats with a creamy texture(which is how I like mine), then you can make it as such: On the stove top put 2 cups Whole Oats with 4-1/2 cups cold water in pot with a pinch of salt. Cook on low heat stirring a bunch throughout until it starts to bubble. You can keep whatevers left in the refrigerator and heat it up during the week in the microwave.
If you prefer a chewy texture you can use hot water and cook at a higher temperature.
I always use Quaker's old fashioned oats, I don't know what it is but I think it makes a creamier batch as opposed to the generic. (Maybe it's all in my head).
I have a friend who always has hers with a banana cooked into the batch.
Everyone's different, whatever suits you.
And, of course as said already if you don't like it there are many other wonderful things in the world to eat.
Good luck.

This is how I do it:

1/2 cup of quick-oats oatmeal
1 cup water
raisins (however many you want)
A sprinkle of walnuts
a dash of cinnamon
packet of splenda
half a banana (or whole - depending on how much banana taste you want)

Combine everything and stick it in the microwave about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. Stir everything together well and your done. Tastes wonderful!!!

I actually don't cook mine. I put 1/2 c regular rolled oats in a bowl with 1 c soy milk and let it soak for a couple of hours (or overnight). I can't stand the wallpaper paste texture of cooked oatmeal, so this works for me. When I go to eat it, I add a TBL ground flax seed, a TBL wheat germ, 1-2 scoops of protein powder, and a scoop of PB2.

They are great! A nice texture and taste.

On the Mann's box, there is a recipe for soaking them overnight (it tells you how much boiling water and oats to combine), then cooking them for a shorter time (about 10-15 minutes rather than 30 minutes) the next morning.

I've made large batches, then stored what I didn't eat right away in individual servings in microwaveable bowls in the fridge. When I'm ready to eat them, I 'chop up' the oatmeal (that has become a solid mass in the fridge), add some soy milk, and microwave for about 2 minutes. I actually like the texture of the reheated oats better than that of the fresh-cooked: it's chewier.

If this doesn't work (if you don't like the results), as Thinkgod says, don't force yourself to like something you don't. You could also try quinoa or teff or amaranth or another grain, if you want a hot grain cereal in the morning.

Thank you everyone for all of the good advice! I'm excited to try all of the methods. I know oatmeal is so healthy for you - hopefully I can learn to like this super-food. Thanks again!

I have an awsome Oatmeal recipe that I use at least twice a week.

Oatmeal Pancake

1/2c oatmeal
1/4c low fat cottage cheese (or tofu)
4 egg whtes
1 ts vanilla extract
1/4 ts cinnamon
1/4 ts nutmeg

Blend ingredients till smooth

Spray nonstick skillet with cooking spray add batter and blend on both sides.

Know I eyeball this to about 2 egg whites, two tablespoons of cottage cheese, 1/4 c oatmeal, dash of cinnamon, dash of nutmeg, splash of vanilla.

These are an awsome way of getting that extra protein with the cottage cheese which you can't taste at all.

I have an oatmeal pancake recipe too. It has changed versions a few times, here is the latest:

1/4 cup oats
1 T flaxseed already ground
splenda or artificial sweetner if desired
I put all this in a food processor to shrink the oats
add 2 egg white plus half a banana and process some more.

Fry like pancake. I use Pam to coat my skillet.

I use the old fashioned oats but prepare them like I would instant....I just add boiling water and eat them immediately. I dont care for the mushiness of letting them cook long. I usually dont add anything but a packet of Splenda. On occassion I may toss in a handful of raisins.

I wish I didn't love oatmeal so much! I could eat it for every meal, but usually just limit myself to breakfast! :) I like either the old fashioned Quaker or steel cut oats (I buy it in bulk at the local natural grocery store).

I use 1/2 c. old fashioned oats & a little less than 1 cup of water (or you could use milk or soymilk if it want it creamier). Microwave for 2 min on 70% power (and watch so it doesn't bubble over). Then stir & see if it needs to go back in for another 30 sec or so. Then I add 1 Tbsp. of naturally more peanut butter, 1 Tbsp. ground flax, 1 Tbsp. wheat germ, 1/4- 1/2 c. cottage cheese, & a sprinkle of cinnamon. Sometimes I'll add blueberries or fruit if I want also. It's soooo yummy. Or sometimes instead of PB, I'll do 1 Tbsp. chopped walnuts.

Steel cut oats I prefer cooked on the stove so I'll cook a larger batch as some of the other ladies have mentioned & then divide into serving sized bowls so I don't eat the whole batch! :p

I also use oatmeal to make pancakes, waffles, and muffins. Happy eating!

I cook 2 servings on the stove top, stir in 1 cup pumpkin puree, 1/2 to 1 cup skim milk, and 1 TBSP brown sugar. Makes enough for 3 breakfasts, super creamy, and really yummy :)

Excuse the silly question but where does one find "steel cut oats" in the grocery store? I have looked and looked and never find them, even in the organic section. I'd like to give them a try ;-)
Thanks!

IF your grocery store carries them, they should be with the "regular" oatmeal. Some stores don't carry them, however!! We usually buy ours in bulk from the natural food store near us - WAY WAY cheaper than the grocery store!!

Putting a tablespoon or two of peanut butter or nutella in regular oatmeal is also amazing. It has become my new nightly snack... and it is a good fuel for the early-morning workout.
