Don't know, but I would like to know since I have a dog with this very disgusting habit. Will be checking in to see what bits of wisdoem appear on this thread.

My sister-in-law had this problem. She ended up having to change the dog's food, as it was still pretty appealing even after going through the digestive process. x(

The vet also suggested that she clean up after the dog immediately, not leaving anything in the yard for her (the dog :D ) to get into to.

The change in diet worked.

I can't believe I even posted this because it's so gross and I don't want to offend anyone. x( But my little boy is SOOO cute and he JUST started this. He cannot be this cute and have such a disgusting habit.

When my dear dog was a puppy - it grossed my husband out! My dog thought he was at a buffet at the steakhouse!!! No kidding...

I heard everything from dog trainers and the vet - he wasn't getting what he needed in his diet, he saw his mommy doing it and he's mimmicking her, etc. I tried EVERYTHING!!!! Then a dog trainer mentioned tabisco sauce...I thought, way too hot it would make him sick....plus you have to be very fast after they go to put something on it! I tried and he didn't like that at all - didn't "eat it" though. BUT, I just couldn't stand the thought of him ingesting tabasco sauce (imagine that LOL)

So I decided to keep him on a leash while he went. After he did his duty, I'd give a firm "Leave It" and I made him move away and sit (or just kept him away) and picked it up. I had to be VERY persistent though and Surprisingly enough, he just learned to walk away! I NEVER thought he'd do that!!!

It's frustrating to see them do that, good luck - I hope something works for ya!

I've seen products in pet catalogs that you add to dogs' food to make their poo unappetizing to them.

As for why they do it: maybe trying to get more nutrients out of their 'food' (the 'second time around')?

I've heard that rabbits actually have to be able to eat their poo, because they can't assimilate certain nutrients first time round (and once they've passed through, they're easier to assimilate?).

That's pretty interesting. I don't know why I didn't think to look online at various pet stores. I'll definitely look now! Thanks all!! :)

I used to have a Westie who had a hankerin' for cat doo-doo! It was the grossest thing I have ever seen in my life.:p

I remember when I first saw our dog do this, my DH refused to believe that our dear Tank would do such a thing, until he saw him ;-) Went on line and was relieved to see that altough gross, not unusual. I tell him "leave it" and he does...when I´m there to watch him Lol!
As an aside: my DD who is a real Spice Girl fan and sent me some Posh Spice youtube vids and in one she is lamenting the fact that her dog, too, eats his poo. so we have a lot of company

My pug puppy did this when she was very young. I would tell her firmly NO! and she did outgrow it. Is your dog a pup?

I'm not offended at all. Dogs and cats are so weird. A guy at work was asking me why his dog is always digging in the cats litterbox for stuff to eat. I told him I'd read somewhere that there's some sort of mineral in cat feces that dogs need and crave, but I couldn't remember what it was. He was so relieved when I told him that his dogs behavior is very common and explainable, once you know what's up. He thought his dog was some sort of twisted pervert with "issues!"

For all of you who have dogs who eat poo: do they also lick your face? EEEW! (I just thought of that, because a friend of mine just lets her dogs go to town with the licking, and it grosses me out! Small kitty kisses I like. Big, slobbery, gooey---and possibly poopie-breath--dog kisses....not so much! Guess that's why I'm a cat person!).

This charming eating habit actually has a name, if you can believe it--coprophagia!

My parents' dog, a lovely girl in every other way, did this, and they never managed to persuade her out of it. Fortunately, speaking to Kathryn's point, she was not a "kissy" dog!

Well, if any of you people watched TV Funhouse you would know about Fogey who loved to eat his own poop.

"By the way, did you know you can spell poop backwards and forwards?"

Geez, Kim, it took me all day to get up the nerve to look at this thread...I thought it was something like your dog's innards were oozing out or something. Eating poop...that's nothin'!

I've heard that dogs eat it when they're bored (now, it takes a lot to bore ME, but when I am, poop-eating is not on the list of things to do to pass the time...although I might go for some junk food. I guesss that just one of those major differences in mammals). Anyhoo...our dogs don't eat their own or each other's poop, but they do love them some cat crap. Basically, our morning walk consists of them finding and eating every piece of cat poop that they didn't find the day before!!!

Wish I could help...I'm just glad I got the nerve to see what your were talking about!!!!

Our dog eats his poop and it is because he eats too fast. So when he poops it is like pooping a meal. I've heard to feed them pineapple helps deter them. We have also tried to get him to slow down eating but it isnt easy, he just gobbles it up... its been a problem his entire life and he is 13 years old.
