nausea during workouts

Dear Cathe,
I have recently had the problem of becoming nauseous during cardio or any workout that gets my heart rate up (leg workouts, etc). I don't actually throw up, but just feel yucky. This is a new thing for me. I recently changed my rotations from mostly cardio to more strength training with 3 or 4 days of cardio. Previously, I have never had a problem with this. I had been doing cardio 6 days a week and just concentrating on one muscle group per day. Everything else is the same with my diet, etc. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

not exactly the same but i have to drink water through out a high impact workout or i'll have a seizure. are you drinking enough water? i have to be careful that i don't drink too much then i'll have cramps in my side. the best workout for me is lowmax since it has very little jumping but still very intense.

Could you be pregnant? When I was newly pregnant I was exactly the same - but only during workouts - the real morning sickness set in later in the pregnancy. If not that could it be from the heat? New vitamins or supplements? Just a few ideas. Hope you get some other advice that helps. Good luck.

I always have a bottle of water handy and take sips during workouts...and don't THINK I'm pregnant:9 ...No new vitamns and I don't take any supplements. Any other thoughts? :)

The only times that has happened to me is if I don't warm-up properly, which I admit I skip the warm-ups alot. Also, when my body needs a few rest days I will feel light headed and nauseous. Or, maybe you need a few more calories before your workout. Just some thoughts:)

I had the exact same thing happen to me - just out of the blue. I didn't really change too much in my workouts, but suddenly, I was getting sick during workouts. For me, this happened in the summer, so I "think" it might have been the heat - and I'm like you, I'm always drinking water. It eventually went away on it's own, and to this day, I don't know what happened. Mine lasted for a couple weeks. I'd say that if yours lasts longer, or it gets worse, you should see a doctor. It's possible it will clear up on its own, but just to be safe . . .

Sometimes I get nauseous during workouts, I went to the doctor & there is absolutely nothing wrong with me. Eventually it went away on its own. I have no clue what caused it, I also had vertigo with it, sometimes I had to stop working out or I would have passed out.
Good luck,

Karen

I also get nausea during summer workouts. I have reduced it by eating about 2 hours before the class, drinking water, and reducing my intensity when I find nausea building up. I do not have the same situation in cooler weather, just on hot and humid days. I have also noticed it during cycling class especially when I am experiencing a sugar low and now make it a point to eat early enough before the class.....

The same thing has been happening to me since the weather has been very hot and humid. I hope it goes away when it cools down again. Melissa

Sometimes nausea can be a sign of GERD (acid reflux) or heartburn, as it was with me. When it's bothering me, I'll take a pepcid, and usually find relief. If your nausea continues, or bothers you when you don't workout, I'd see a doctor.

Thanks everyone for all of you thoughts and advice. I love this forum because everyone is so nice and always try to help!:) During my last couple of workouts, I have felt fine...and the weather has been a little cooler here, so this could have been my problem (even though I keep the AC set pretty low:p ) I'll keep an eye on it and if persists, I'll definitely see a doctor.

Thanks to all,
Debra;-)

When I worked out to Denise Austin I would work out in the morning on an empty stomach when I started working out to Cathe I tried it and I get very nauseated. I started eating bananas before my workouts or just a little something.

I'm 24 and I get nauseous when I let my heart rate get too high. I invested in a heart rate monitor a few years ago and whether doing cardio or weights, I use this to gauge how fast my heart is beating. I find that when my heart rate is really high, especially during heavy leg workouts or running on warm/hot days, I get nauseous and have to sit down for about 5 minutes before I can continue. I've had this since I was a kid and I now attribute it to over-exerting myself in a short time-span, i.e. if I do something really hard in a burst, say plie squats with heavy weights, my heart rate spikes and is accompanied by a wave of nausea. The only things that really help me are first, to make sure I'm not overheating and have a fan pointed at me throughout indoor workouts, second, that I am hydrated before and during the workout, third, eating something small and mild, such as an English muffin or a banana perhaps 30-60 minutes before working out, and finally, I keep my heart rate from getting really high (by calibrating my limits with the heart rate monitor or just measuring it on my wrist). I have to pay close attention to all of these things as my carelessness is always answered with nausea. Cathe's tapes kick my butt and drive my stomach crazy, but the health & strength benefits are worth it.

Possibly you are having a drop in blood sugar. Try eating something small - part of a banana, a couple sips of milk, a few crackers and keep hydrated. That happens to me sometimes and I find if I have something in my stomach, it helps keep the sugar up. I exercise early (4:45 - 5:00 am starting time), so if I'm already feeling really tired or queasy before starting, I'll grab a handful of almonds or something else to get the stomach going and blood sugar up a bit.
